I suspect that the vast majority of "power users" with 2 Studio Displays is also using some sort of decent desktop speaker setup that's light years better than using the tiny built-in speakers in the monitor. I use Audioengine A2's plus their DAC/headphone amp and it's a great solution, and doesn't take up a ton of space.

No macOS scaling issues with the TEXT being sharp and crisp at 5K 218 PPI compared to the blurry and distorted eye straining text of inferior 4K monitors esp while viewing code, documents, web pages etc from close distance. The Studio Display sure is outdated. I have the option of purchasing it at Best Buy for $1299 right now. I decided no. For that price I would need upgrade to 4 thunderbolt 4 ports. It has one Thunderbolt 3. Very old. Apple could easily upgrade this thing to at least that. As mentioned in the video, webcam is very old too. Another easy upgrade for Apple. It does not. There’s a plugin you can download that will make it work but it just plays the speakers at the same time. You’re unable to separate left and right in the audio midi setup. Wish Apple would put out an update to let us configure the internal displays via the midi setup.
I’ve messed around all over the audio midi utility and never could get them to play. In tandem or recognize them as different channels as you’d expect you could do. Found a guy on Reddit who made a plugin to be able to play both of them at the same time but it’s not great. Just louder.
Wellll, they’re not gate keeping the tandem oled on the ipad pros, the main problem would be that manufacturers would need to manufacture them but up to apple’s quality standards, second would be producing one cheap enough to replace the LCD that apple’s using in the studio
I actually wish they brought back the 2k Cinema Display and gave that OLED. I do a lot of animations and would rather have a 3 lower res monitor so After Effects and Fusion doesn’t slow down trying to push out more pixels.
That’s fair. Can’t you just scale a monitor down for when you need to do rendering or anything. I know the studio display lets you scale the image way way down in the settings.
They were $1299 on Amazon prime, if it’s $1299 for Black Friday I’m getting one. If apple comes out with a new one I’ll wait till it’s a good sale then this one will be my secondary monitor.
I did not. Something I never recall wanting from the studio display. I don’t have any other usb c output devices. If Apple for some reason did a monitor with gaming specs then I would love to have an input switch so I can use my ps5 with the monitor. If they don’t I’ll probably never not use my primary Mac with it.
Why thank you. I do it myself😂 it involves pushing it back with some gel to keep it out of my eyes. Growing it out for the first time ever though. I have naturally curly ends so I think it might be nice who knows. Thanks so much for watching!
You just convinced me to buy an OLED display 😁 Btw an anecdote regarding the dual display problem: A friends dad has a studio display as well as a generic LG display. They don’t work together at all. Either the studio display is on when he wakes the Mac from sleep or the Lg. If the Lg turns on the Studio Display just goes black and doesn’t turn on before he disconnects and reconnects the thunderbolt cable. Truly sad.
I feel that man. Happy I convinced you! OLEDs really are the way. Your anecdote is real man. Displays and Mac OS can be super wonky. All the more reason to be hoping that Apple puts out more highly optimized high quality and modern displays.
OK they're working on something. Not replacing the Studio display after 2 years. So expect a $6,000 monitor. Remember it's rumoured that a new mouse will take years now to put a usb 3 in it. Secondly, this display is so crippled I'm surprised the power plug isn't a $600 option. It's too bad they've gone all in on greed - it is we that suffer from being caught in the Apple trap.
I've been thinking of replacing my Studio Display with the LG Ultragear 32 Oled, which is 1000 dollars at the moment. Mainly because a) Its OLED b) I can plug in my XBOX. The only thing I don't like about the LG is that it doesn't have a USBC port? Might wait for a version that does. I can't use the other brands with their gamer aesthetics, branding and weird bezels.
I did a monitor called “the only monitor you need” a month or two ago. You should check that one out ESPECIALLY with Black Friday around the corner. QD OLED, USB C with power delivery, 240 hz refresh at 4K, HDMI 2.1. I don’t ever see the back of the monitor so I forgot what the vibe of the design was but from the front it’s pretty minimal. Super small chin with the branding.
I got my studio display in August 23. I want to get a second one and have a dual display but I’m gonna wait for Apple’s replacement before I get my next one.
You need the webcam and the speakers because otherwise you end up buying that stuff and have wires go everywhere using up all your ports. That’s a big draw for the iMac, no wires.
Yea but I also have better speakers and a better webcam and a thunderbolt dock for more I/O. Prefer to buy a good display and not waste money on worse peripherals that I already have better versions of.
@@AndrewTaylorYTYeah but you have to remember this is adjacent to the Studio and Mac Mini, and specifically designed to emulate the iMac experience. I have the old Thunderbolt Display that they made, and the “all in one dock” aspect was the major selling point. A lot of people are not streamers or content creators behind the camera, but they need a camera for Zoom and FaceTime for meetings/work. To have the center stage is already a very full feature set for a built in monitor camera. In reality anyone who uses their camera for content creation can link their iPhone, and that would be Apple’s ideal solution for the average consumer. Anyone who needs more than that knows what they need. And the speakers are absolutely great for a monitor in general. Having a mic, camera, and decent speakers make the whole package way more appealing for someone trying to get the most from a Studio or Mac Mini. It’s not perfect but it’s definitely a niche in the market that Apple has gone for in the past.
I honestly think Apple will NOT release an update to their displays before they have Thunderbolt 5 added to their M line of SOCs. TB5 has enough bandwidth to support 120Hz in a +5k display. As Apple tends to not update their displays for many years, it would be strange for Apple to release a display without TB5 as it would be outdated for most of its planned lifetime. My hope is that Apple will release a new display alongside the M4 Mac Studio which is supposedly going to be released sometime between March and June next year. And hopefully, the M4 Ultra will also come with TB5.
That makes a lot of sense and would be pretty dope. I was really hoping the M4 studios were gonna be this winter. When I saw all of the leaks say that the launch got pushed out to WWDC 2025 or later I caved and got an M2 Studio. If Apple did a Pro event next summer or fall and did new displays and a new studio and maybe a redesigned Mac Pro that would be so so sick. Maybe launch the M5 series with thunderbolt 5 idk.
12:30 I don't really care for the webcam and speakers. But I do care about the ergonomics and for $ 1600, I want the monitor to be able to adjustable (height, tilt, etc.) without having to pay hundreds of Dollars more.
I am actually pretty happy with my Studio display, purchased it first day release and it's just perfect. Do i want 120 hz and tandem oled, i mean sure, but it comes with a price increase, nope. I am good. This isn't a bad display as it stands and probably will be for another decade.
It’s a super solid display I agree. I doubt it holds up for a decade though. Previous Apple displays have held up for a decade but it’s generally because they were pushing specs and modern hardware. The studio display specs were mildly outdated at launch. I just need a 32 inch tandem OLED display man. Put some good I/O into it too. The absolute dream display.
I tried the latest WOLED from LG and the Alienware QD-OLED and was very underwhelmed with the brightness of both. IPS and mini LED are still better in terms of brightness. Also, I love the pixel density of 5K at 27" on my studio display. Sure the 60 Hz refresh, but I prefer it over my 27" 4k 144 Hz LG. I hope we'll see new Apple displays in 2025. Any new products going forward must be 120 Hz minimum refresh rate.
Yea I can’t go back to 60Hz. Would prefer 240hz to be honest. When you go to do color correction and color accurate work it’s generally done at 400 nits so I always stick to that. That tandem OLED display though is VIBRANT. Just need a new modern Pro Display XDR to be honest.
It is outdated. It lacks daisy-chain capabilities, it lacks face id, it’s stuck at 27”, it has that god awful stand and that unbearable non detachable cable, not to mention its only 60 hz. For the price, its an AWFUL monitor.
Some of your criticisms here are on point. But what do you mean by “it’s stuck at 27 inches”? Aren’t all monitors stuck at the size they were manufactured at?😂 I also don’t know many monitors supporting Face ID.
When Apple released the M4 Mac Pro I think it is safe to assume that the chassis will be updated as well. Should my assumption be correct, they would also have to adapt the Pro Display XDR chassis as it follows the same design language. And if this needs to be done, Apple would surely take the opportunity to also updated the specs of the display as well. As for the M4 Studio, I don't think they will change the overall design and hence there is no necessity to update the Studio Display, at least not because of this potential reason. Still, I think it is safe to assume that the Studio Display will also get TB5 connectivity and potentially 90Hz or 120Hz soon.
Great video! Your comment on oled being easier on your eyes is starting to make me think I should go that route over the studio display? What about it is easier on the eyes? Also, for a coding only use case, would you recommend an oled or studio display?
For coding I’d looking into specific OLED models. Some OLED displays have problems with super sharp text. Some are perfectly fine. If you can find the right fit then I would recommend OLED 100%. Scientifically the only thing the OLED panels do to be easier on the eyes is that they generate far less blue light. Blue light being a harsh light frequency for eyes. Anecdotally I’ve just found that OLEDs are far comfier for long sessions. The blue light plays into that for sure but they also just seem comfier. The fact that they aren’t generally as bright is probably another factor. Can’t recommend OLED enough. It’s the real deal.
My predicament is that I need to buy a new 27" Mac compatible monitor in the near future. I'm a graphic designer so accurate color and high resolution are two important considerations for me. I spoke with an Apple rep today and he said that even though competing models are very close on paper, there's a very noticeable difference between 98% colo accuracy and 96%. I'm not a tech guy so all these specs are confusing to me. Does anyone have any suggestions for another monitor that can match Apple's color accuracy and resolution?
Honestly the studio display might be the choice for you. There are OLEDs that are similar and the Dell ultra sharps are great but the studio display sounds really compelling for your use case.
@AndrewTaylorYT i think you're right. I did a fair amount of research, given my non-technical limitations. And the only other monitor that looked promising was the new ASUS ProArt PA27JCV. It's half the price of the Apple, it's 5K, and the color accuracy is supposed to be fantastic. But on the downside, the build quality, product support, speaker system, and reliability doesn't compare with the Apple. I'm sure it's a great monitor for the money but it's worth paying more for me to not have to worry about support, compatibility, and reliability.
@@Tigerex966 The BenQ 5K wasn't available when I bought my Mac M4 Mini. A $1600+ ASD is not competing with a $799 ASUS. And the only 6K Dell I see on their website is the Dell UltraSharp 32 6K Monitor - U3224KB for $2,479.99, again, not meant to compete with a $799 monitor. So I don't know what you're talking about.
Absolutely agree! I just gave my wife my ASD with tilt adjustment and picked up an MSI 321URX for less than a grand. It is so much better. There's more benefits with the 321URX especially in HDR color range and contrast black level. Plus the 240hz is just buttery smooth while maintaining a one cable setup as before. I was waiting for Apple to drop their own old monitor for long but they just playing games. 3rd Gen QD-OLED has gotten better and brighter in HDR quality and text clarity, still not as sharp as the ASD but doesn't always look too chromatic all the time.
I’d like to hope it’s because they are biding time because they have some truly mind blowing products on the release slate in a year or two. They really have been doing the 50/50 thing lately though.
I think something is cooking.....the Pro Display XDR just had a significant price drop in the area where I live...not just one retailer lowered the price but many and all at the same time. Maybe they got notified that the display is approaching end of life sometime next year and they are trying to empty their stock? As for the Studio Display, nothing has moved on the price front yet....
@@AndrewTaylorYT you can configure left monitor as left speaker and right monitor as right speaker in config but anyway if you didn’t like you did not like it is up to you. I added also new beats pill via usb-c sounds nice to me
@@AndrewTaylorYT It's not the best solution, but you could use Audio MIDI Setup, mute the right channel in the left screen, mute the left channel in the right screen -> create multi output device using both studio displays so that the left channel only comes out of the left screen, and the right channel only comes out of the right screen
One note about promotion, I’ve heard thunderbolt 4 doesn’t support the bandwidth needed to do 5k 120hz, so until a better spec comes out, there’s not much that can be done there
@@livedreamsg oof I’m an idiot 🤦🏼♂️ 5k would require more bandwidth than 4k but I doubt it would be substantial enough to make a difference. Apologies for the stupid comment
That’s a decent point. Thunderbolt 4 doesn’t 40 Gbs while 57 Gbs is needed for 5k 120hz in HDR. Thunderbolt 5 is a thing now so hopefully the new display with pull through.
@PeteandPan not sure what the first will be. Late spring/early summer is the rumored update for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. I’m assuming that if they release updated displays then they will be revealed along with those computers.
How MacOS handles display scaling is the real killer here. Any sub 200 PPI display (i.e. all 4K displays) will look noticeably blurry and have weird artifacting. I’m seeing refurbed Samsung and LG 5K displays for around $700 now- the physical build quality of these displays are garbage compared to Apples offerings though.
Scaling is weird yea. There’s an advanced option in display settings to list actual resolutions now so you can kinda rescale it yourself. It’s still just kinda annoying. Like 6 videos I did a video called “the only monitor you need” and that 4k display has worked great for my Mac. I don’t have it in default scaling though. I think it’s scaled from 1440p as a default up to 4k. Makes everything feel more natural and crisp.
You can fix that with an app, called BetterDisplay. And Apple could fix it in the OS, but won't. They want to sell "Retina" displays, not having others buy great 4K monitors.
Only tb5 van handle more than 60hz at 5k or higher meaning less than 1% if the market.okus the latest displayport and hdmi which almost no macs have or pc. Apple could add chips and a mini core gpu to the monitors r for 120hz.
Honestly who tf cares about a high quality web cam for team meetings. I never look at any of my colleagues and say “wow that guy must have a 4k webcam!”
There’s meetings you don’t care about then meetings you want to impress. Pitch meetings, sponsors, higher ups. Plenty of meetings I’ve been on that I plug my mirrorless in for and make sure it looks good and impressive. Average teams meetings I’ll leave my iPad on it back pointing at the ceiling.😂
Aren't OLED panels a massive problem with burn-in and degradation and stuff like that? I can't imagine people paying $2000 for a display and have it fail on them after 2 years, that would cripple Apple's reputation and it might be why they haven't taken the plunge yet. LG and co don't really care if you think they suck, they sell by price and glitz not reputation, Apple depends heavily on their reputation since that is why people bite the bullet and pay their premium
Apple is the ONLY company that sells a Tandem OLED display to consumers currently which doubles the brightness of general OLED displays. OLED burn in isn’t really a problem anymore. Was 7-8 years ago but we have pretty much figured out how to maintain OLED panels. The Tandem OLED idk about. Idk if they will have burn in. That’s new tech at least to consumers. But like you said Apple cares about their reputation. I doubt they would be putting out Tandem OLED without being incredibly confident. Just need it in Displays now :D Thanks so much for watching!
OLED for work? Hell no. Text looks bad on OLED, and you will eventually have burn in from those static work apps. For gaming, absolutely! My LG W-OLED blows away any IPS monitor.
Idk man. I’ve got this QD OLED monitor and the text looks great. It’s got a TON of panel protection modes and does a full pixel shift and repair every 16 hours. It’s incredible for gaming and next level for working.
That’s what I kinda thought until I just got some stereo speakers for the desk. Used the studio display speakers for a good while thinking they were the best thing im gonna get that isn’t massive studio monitors. Bought a pair of the audio engine A2+ for like 260 and it’s insane how much better they are at such a small size. Any display with a speaker now is just a waste of money now. I like the inclusion for people who might want it but give me a cheaper sku without the speakers.
Havent watched the video yet, but from the start-im gonna say its not _outdated_ but more so irrelevant or overlooked. Its just not “worth” the price tag to most of us. The specs are fine and arent bad by any means, its just that loosely comparable performance can be found anywhere and for cheaper. It makes choosing the studio display a hard sell except for apple elitists.
No problem no problem. Genuinely don’t think it would be a horrible fit for you if you’re coming into a setup with nothing. Is a color accurate monitor with speakers and works quick and easy with any Mac you could get.😂
Kind of? It added the solid speakers as well as the webcam and some higher brightness. Also the nicer design. It’s hard to argue against he convenience of the thing.
I’ll also say if you can’t recommend a better option, maybe this video is just clickbait. Make a reco. There isn’t one out there. Apple makes the best display for their computers hands down. Not Ben Q. Not Samsung. Not LG. Not Dell.
Eh idk. I’ve actually weirdly been around and doing a lot of Mac gaming lately. It’s starting to be a thing. Really hoping the metal tool kit continues to get better and it becomes really easy for devs to port over.

No way they do that and don’t release a new display along with them. If they are lining all of that up then i imagine it’ll be a dedicated “Workhorse” event. Wellll, they’re not gate keeping the tandem oled on the ipad pros, the main problem would be that manufacturers would need to manufacture them but up to apple’s quality standards, second would be producing one cheap enough to replace the LCD that apple’s using in the studio
That’s true. The MacBook Pro redesign is supposed to get them. I’d hope Apple keeps pushing for bigger panels.
Thank goodness I saw your video. I was going to buy one.
Thanks so much for watching! Like I said. If you’ve found a super good deal it’s still a solid monitor. If not it’s a safe skip for now.
I just bought two. They are incredibly great monitors if you can get them for $1300 each like I did.
I bought two during the sale, stoked. They are amazing so far I love them.
@@CodyVellayea I got one, and same!
Did you mention input switching?
I did not. Something I never recall wanting from the studio display. I don’t have any other usb c output devices. If Apple for some reason did a monitor with gaming specs then I would love to have an input switch so I can use my ps5 with the monitor. If they don’t I’ll probably never not use my primary Mac with it.
got mine used for 800$ with box!
That’s a killer deal dude! Congrats. That’s 100% worth it. I’d buy one if I found it at that price.😂
@@AndrewTaylorYTjust bought one for 900. is this worth too?
Oh and my compliments to Andrew's hair stylist, who earns this video an extra thumbs up.
Why thank you. I do it myself😂 it involves pushing it back with some gel to keep it out of my eyes. Growing it out for the first time ever though. I have naturally curly ends so I think it might be nice who knows. Thanks so much for watching!
You just convinced me to buy an OLED display 😁
Btw an anecdote regarding the dual display problem: A friends dad has a studio display as well as a generic LG display.
Nice display but the ports need to be upgraded to current day USB Thunderbolt 4 or 5 ports.
Pretty sure the main port is thunderbolt 4.
Samsung Viewfinity S9 is 5K Monitor Option at around 1000 Dollar.
Many are using the 4K Mateview from Huawei 28'in too
All solid monitors. I’m really happy with this MSI OLED I got recently. It’s super solid.
@@AndrewTaylorYT would you tell the name of the model?
@AndrewTaylorYT viewfinity s9 seems to have flickering issues and stuff
100% agree!
Great video! Your comment on oled being easier on your eyes is starting to make me think I should go that route over the studio display? What about it is easier on the eyes? Also, for a coding only use case, would you recommend an oled or
studio display?
I'm sure it's a great monitor for the money but it's worth paying more for me to not have to worry about support, compatibility, and reliability.
iMac 5k Asus 5k BenQ 5k LG ,5k;apple 5k Dell 6k lots of competition $600 to $2000
@@Tigerex966 The BenQ 5K wasn't available when I bought my Mac M4 Mini.
Doesnt samsung make most of their screens?
Absolutely agree! I just gave my wife my ASD with tilt adjustment and picked up an MSI 321URX for less than a grand. It is so much better. There's more benefits with the 321URX especially in HDR color range and contrast black level. Plus the 240hz is just buttery smooth while maintaining a one cable setup as before. I was waiting for Apple to drop their own old monitor for long but they just playing games. 3rd Gen QD-OLED has gotten better and brighter in HDR quality and text clarity, still not as sharp as the ASD but doesn't always look too chromatic all the time.
I did a video on that monitor a couple months back. Called it “the only monitor you need”. It’s so good at absolutely everything. It’s incredible.
many of the latest products from apple feels like "half products". They create a a 50% perfect product, and other aspect is crap. it is weird.
I’m hoping we get some updates here soon and I agree. Something’s going and something HAS to be in the pipeline. Thanks so much for watching!
MultiSoundChanger , you can use
I used it for awhile but it just plays the speakers in tandem. I’d prefer a genuine stereo split.
One note about promotion, I’ve heard thunderbolt 4 doesn’t support the bandwidth needed to do 5k 120hz, so until a better spec comes out, there’s not much that can be done there
That's a load of nonsense. Thunderbolt 4 can do 4K 240hz using DSC.
...Not to mention Thunderbolt 5 is a thing and can do 4K 240hz without DSC.
@@AndrewTaylorYT ok I knew I wasn’t crazy, I just forgot thunderbolt 5 had come out, but I don’t think Apple is using it on anything yet?
Apple… We need an Update Soon… 🙏💛
Cannot agree more. Need Apple to drop the most sick nasty epic display of all time.
@@AndrewTaylorYT When is the first Apple event in 2025? I hope they will announce it at that moment in time and space 🪐
90% in. My only caveat is I’d want killer speakers built in. Less clutter and things to plug in.
I’d love if they went all out and added like stereo speakers that were beautifully designed into the system.
Why give something better if you can charge top dollar for older technology? Most Apple users don't even know about OLEDs
Maybe. Most Apple users buying a studio display probably do. But most Apple users in general probably don’t.

Thanks so much.😊
Honestly who tf cares about a high quality web cam for team meetings.
Just need it in Displays now :D Thanks so much for watching!
andrew youre right the studio display seems to be quite outdated, mayyyybe you should give it to me i mean atleast just one? 🥺
I already sold mine I’m sorryyyyyy. The one in the video is my roommates.😂
@@AndrewTaylorYTwhat’s the model of that monitor?
@@AndrewTaylorYTwhich one?
nah keep the speaker! and an extra thunderbolt port
No monitor sound system can beat a good set of stereo speakers. And they don't have to be big. For example Kanto YU4.
Brother, watch the video before trying to argue with my argument that you haven’t listened to yet.
Why are you saying that Apple needs to do things.....why not say that you want things!
Thank you for saving me $1600 😂
No problem no problem. Genuinely don’t think it would be a horrible fit for you if you’re coming into a setup with nothing. Is a color accurate monitor with speakers and works quick and easy with any Mac you could get.😂
This display was never worth the price tag.
same things said over, and over, and over. lol
HDR no?!
outdated
Did I say it didn’t do HDR? The studio does do some HDR. It’s not much but it’s got an extra 200 nits.
100%
It was already outdated when it launched. Wasn't it just a rebadge of an existing product that had been out for several years prior anyway?
Not LG. Not Dell.
I did make a reco. Also made a whole video about the reco. The only monitor you need.
No good for gaming , nobody buys a mac for gaming
Eh idk. I’ve actually weirdly been around and doing a lot of Mac gaming lately. It’s starting to be a thing. Really hoping the metal tool kit continues to get better and it becomes really easy for devs to port over.

@AnthonyAllioo I personally think we will see it next year. Apple is ramping up to release a new Mac Studio AND Mac Pro here middle of 2025. No way they do that and don’t release a new display along with them. If they are lining all of that up then i imagine it’ll be a dedicated “Workhorse” event. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they launched new MacBook pros as well. M4 ultra makes sense but maybe they start releasing the M5 chips? Only the high end ones though? Idk. Im very curious to see what apple has to offer.
