Andrew, I will never stop telling you how fantastic your production quality is every time I watch a video. I can't wait till your channel becomes huge because I think enough people will be interested in your story telling, its so good.
Thank you so much man. Every time you comment it means the world. The love and support is so crazy amazing and it gives me so much drive and purpose in what I’m doing. Hope to make you proud brother.
Wellll, they’re not gate keeping the tandem oled on the ipad pros, the main problem would be that manufacturers would need to manufacture them but up to apple’s quality standards, second would be producing one cheap enough to replace the LCD that apple’s using in the studio
Man oh man I needed this video. Have been on the fence for months on getting a studio display. I was hoping they'd announce an update here before the end of the year. I might just go with a 32" 4K OLED
I ended up going with a qdOLED 32 inch that was 4k as well. Plenty of them even do USB C power delivery now. Some great monitors out there. Saw when you subbed almost a year ago now. Thanks so so much for watching my stuff. Been watching some of your content as well lately! Thank you❤️
But my problem with OLEDs is that I need to babysit it for the next 7-10 years using my Monitor while I work. My work involves Word documents, Excel, PDFs, PowerPoints, PSS, and many browser tabs. I barely find a couple of hours at the end of the day to play, and I do like gaming, of course, or watching anything before going to bed. So, unless they invent an OLED that is not bad for static content, then no thanks.
The one I’m using isn’t bad at all for static content. The downside is every 10-16 hours of screen on time it needs to shut off for like 12 minutes to do a panel protect dealio. Seems to work incredibly well. Worth the trade off tbh.
With the availability of thunderbolt 5 now, an upgrade of the studio display to a tandem oled, 5k 120hz monitor would be incredible. (An adjustable stand should be stock.) I think manufacturing at scale would allow for a cheaper product and far more sales.
I 100% agree with you. Do a single sku monitor with height adjustment, tandem OLED, and pro motion. Removable cable. High speed Ethernet in the power brick just like the iMacs. $1299.99 MSRP. That’s the dream.
I’ve messed around all over the audio midi utility and never could get them to play. In tandem or recognize them as different channels as you’d expect you could do. Found a guy on Reddit who made a plugin to be able to play both of them at the same time but it’s not great. Just louder.
You just convinced me to buy an OLED display 😁 Btw an anecdote regarding the dual display problem: A friends dad has a studio display as well as a generic LG display. They don’t work together at all. Either the studio display is on when he wakes the Mac from sleep or the Lg. If the Lg turns on the Studio Display just goes black and doesn’t turn on before he disconnects and reconnects the thunderbolt cable. Truly sad.
I feel that man. Happy I convinced you! OLEDs really are the way. Your anecdote is real man. Displays and Mac OS can be super wonky. All the more reason to be hoping that Apple puts out more highly optimized high quality and modern displays.
They were $1250 on Amazon prime, if it’s $1250 for Black Friday I’m getting one. If apple comes out with a new one I’ll wait till it’s a good sale then this one will be my secondary monitor.
I actually wish they brought back the 2k Cinema Display and gave that OLED. I do a lot of animations and would rather have a 3 lower res monitor so After Effects and Fusion doesn’t slow down trying to push out more pixels.
That’s fair. Can’t you just scale a monitor down for when you need to do rendering or anything. I know the studio display lets you scale the image way way down in the settings.
The Studio Display sure is outdated. I have the option of purchasing it at Best Buy for $1299 right now. I decided no. For that price I would need upgrade to 4 thunderbolt 4 ports. It has one Thunderbolt 3. Very old. Apple could easily upgrade this thing to at least that. As mentioned in the video, webcam is very old too. Another easy upgrade for Apple. For the price of $1599 I should be able to get an Apple Display at 32 inches, 6K and 4 Thunderbolt Ports along with a 12 MP Webcam at least.
I've been thinking of replacing my Studio Display with the LG Ultragear 32 Oled, which is 1000 dollars at the moment. Mainly because a) Its OLED b) I can plug in my XBOX. The only thing I don't like about the LG is that it doesn't have a USBC port? Might wait for a version that does. I can't use the other brands with their gamer aesthetics, branding and weird bezels.
I did a monitor called “the only monitor you need” a month or two ago. You should check that one out ESPECIALLY with Black Friday around the corner. QD OLED, USB C with power delivery, 240 hz refresh at 4K, HDMI 2.1. I don’t ever see the back of the monitor so I forgot what the vibe of the design was but from the front it’s pretty minimal. Super small chin with the branding.
You need the webcam and the speakers because otherwise you end up buying that stuff and have wires go everywhere using up all your ports. That’s a big draw for the iMac, no wires.
Yea but I also have better speakers and a better webcam and a thunderbolt dock for more I/O. Prefer to buy a good display and not waste money on worse peripherals that I already have better versions of.
I honestly think Apple will NOT release an update to their displays before they have Thunderbolt 5 added to their M line of SOCs. TB5 has enough bandwidth to support 120Hz in a +5k display. As Apple tends to not update their displays for many years, it would be strange for Apple to release a display without TB5 as it would be outdated for most of its planned lifetime. My hope is that Apple will release a new display alongside the M4 Mac Studio which is supposedly going to be released sometime between March and June next year. And hopefully, the M4 Ultra will also come with TB5.
That makes a lot of sense and would be pretty dope. I was really hoping the M4 studios were gonna be this winter. When I saw all of the leaks say that the launch got pushed out to WWDC 2025 or later I caved and got an M2 Studio. If Apple did a Pro event next summer or fall and did new displays and a new studio and maybe a redesigned Mac Pro that would be so so sick. Maybe launch the M5 series with thunderbolt 5 idk.
When Apple released the M4 Mac Pro I think it is safe to assume that the chassis will be updated as well. Should my assumption be correct, they would also have to adapt the Pro Display XDR chassis as it follows the same design language. And if this needs to be done, Apple would surely take the opportunity to also updated the specs of the display as well. As for the M4 Studio, I don't think they will change the overall design and hence there is no necessity to update the Studio Display, at least not because of this potential reason. Still, I think it is safe to assume that the Studio Display will also get TB5 connectivity and potentially 90Hz or 120Hz soon.
I am actually pretty happy with my Studio display, purchased it first day release and it's just perfect. Do i want 120 hz and tandem oled, i mean sure, but it comes with a price increase, nope. I am good. This isn't a bad display as it stands and probably will be for another decade.
It’s a super solid display I agree. I doubt it holds up for a decade though. Previous Apple displays have held up for a decade but it’s generally because they were pushing specs and modern hardware. The studio display specs were mildly outdated at launch. I just need a 32 inch tandem OLED display man. Put some good I/O into it too. The absolute dream display.
I think something is cooking.....the Pro Display XDR just had a significant price drop in the area where I live...not just one retailer lowered the price but many and all at the same time. Maybe they got notified that the display is approaching end of life sometime next year and they are trying to empty their stock? As for the Studio Display, nothing has moved on the price front yet....
Aren't OLED panels a massive problem with burn-in and degradation and stuff like that? I can't imagine people paying $2000 for a display and have it fail on them after 2 years, that would cripple Apple's reputation and it might be why they haven't taken the plunge yet. LG and co don't really care if you think they suck, they sell by price and glitz not reputation, Apple depends heavily on their reputation since that is why people bite the bullet and pay their premium
Apple is the ONLY company that sells a Tandem OLED display to consumers currently which doubles the brightness of general OLED displays. OLED burn in isn’t really a problem anymore. Was 7-8 years ago but we have pretty much figured out how to maintain OLED panels. The Tandem OLED idk about. Idk if they will have burn in. That’s new tech at least to consumers. But like you said Apple cares about their reputation. I doubt they would be putting out Tandem OLED without being incredibly confident. Just need it in Displays now :D Thanks so much for watching!
How MacOS handles display scaling is the real killer here. Any sub 200 PPI display (i.e. all 4K displays) will look noticeably blurry and have weird artifacting. I’m seeing refurbed Samsung and LG 5K displays for around $700 now- the physical build quality of these displays are garbage compared to Apples offerings though.
Scaling is weird yea. There’s an advanced option in display settings to list actual resolutions now so you can kinda rescale it yourself. It’s still just kinda annoying. Like 6 videos I did a video called “the only monitor you need” and that 4k display has worked great for my Mac. I don’t have it in default scaling though. I think it’s scaled from 1440p as a default up to 4k. Makes everything feel more natural and crisp.
You can fix that with an app, called BetterDisplay. And Apple could fix it in the OS, but won't. They want to sell "Retina" displays, not having others buy great 4K monitors.
Great video! Your comment on oled being easier on your eyes is starting to make me think I should go that route over the studio display? What about it is easier on the eyes? Also, for a coding only use case, would you recommend an oled or studio display?
For coding I’d looking into specific OLED models. Some OLED displays have problems with super sharp text. Some are perfectly fine. If you can find the right fit then I would recommend OLED 100%. Scientifically the only thing the OLED panels do to be easier on the eyes is that they generate far less blue light. Blue light being a harsh light frequency for eyes. Anecdotally I’ve just found that OLEDs are far comfier for long sessions. The blue light plays into that for sure but they also just seem comfier. The fact that they aren’t generally as bright is probably another factor. Can’t recommend OLED enough. It’s the real deal.
@PeteandPan not sure what the first will be. Late spring/early summer is the rumored update for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. I’m assuming that if they release updated displays then they will be revealed along with those computers.
I did not. Something I never recall wanting from the studio display. I don’t have any other usb c output devices. If Apple for some reason did a monitor with gaming specs then I would love to have an input switch so I can use my ps5 with the monitor. If they don’t I’ll probably never not use my primary Mac with it.
One note about promotion, I’ve heard thunderbolt 4 doesn’t support the bandwidth needed to do 5k 120hz, so until a better spec comes out, there’s not much that can be done there
@@livedreamsg oof I’m an idiot 🤦🏼♂️ 5k would require more bandwidth than 4k but I doubt it would be substantial enough to make a difference. Apologies for the stupid comment

No problem no problem. Genuinely don’t think it would be a horrible fit for you if you’re coming into a setup with nothing. Is a color accurate monitor with speakers and works quick and easy with any Mac you could get.😂
OLED for work? Hell no. Text looks bad on OLED, and you will eventually have burn in from those static work apps. For gaming, absolutely! My LG W-OLED blows away any IPS monitor.
Idk man. I’ve got this QD OLED monitor and the text looks great. It’s got a TON of panel protection modes and does a full pixel shift and repair every 16 hours. It’s incredible for gaming and next level for working.
My predicament is that I need to buy a new 27" Mac compatible monitor in the near future. I'm a graphic designer so accurate color and high resolution are two important considerations for me. I spoke with an Apple rep today and he said that even though competing models are very close on paper, there's a very noticeable difference between 98% colo accuracy and 96%. I'm not a tech guy so all these specs are confusing to me. Does anyone have any suggestions for another monitor that can match Apple's color accuracy and resolution?
Honestly the studio display might be the choice for you. There are OLEDs that are similar and the Dell ultra sharps are great but the studio display sounds really compelling for your use case.
@AndrewTaylorYT i think you're right. I did a fair amount of research, given my non-technical limitations. And the only other monitor that looked promising was the new ASUS ProArt PA27JCV. It's half the price of the Apple, it's 5K, and the color accuracy is supposed to be fantastic. But on the downside, the build quality, product support, speaker system, and reliability doesn't compare with the Apple. I'm sure it's a great monitor for the money but it's worth paying more for me to not have to worry about support, compatibility, and reliability.
@@AndrewTaylorYT you can configure left monitor as left speaker and right monitor as right speaker in config but anyway if you didn’t like you did not like it is up to you. I added also new beats pill via usb-c sounds nice to me
@@AndrewTaylorYT It's not the best solution, but you could use Audio MIDI Setup, mute the right channel in the left screen, mute the left channel in the right screen -> create multi output device using both studio displays so that the left channel only comes out of the left screen, and the right channel only comes out of the right screen
That’s what I kinda thought until I just got some stereo speakers for the desk. Used the studio display speakers for a good while thinking they were the best thing im gonna get that isn’t massive studio monitors. Bought a pair of the audio engine A2+ for like 260 and it’s insane how much better they are at such a small size. Any display with a speaker now is just a waste of money now. I like the inclusion for people who might want it but give me a cheaper sku without the speakers.
I’d like to hope it’s because they are biding time because they have some truly mind blowing products on the release slate in a year or two. They really have been doing the 50/50 thing lately though.
It does not. There’s a plugin you can download that will make it work but it just plays the speakers at the same time. You’re unable to separate left and right in the audio midi setup. Wish Apple would put out an update to let us configure the internal displays via the midi setup.
Kind of? It added the solid speakers as well as the webcam and some higher brightness. Also the nicer design. It’s hard to argue against he convenience of the thing.

Solid price. Not a bad idea at all. I was reading a rumor yesterday that Apple is developing a 90 hz display for future tech including a new studio display. So maybe the display is closer than expected.👀
@@AndrewTaylorYT yea but it says it will still be LCD, and even if they dropped a better one, I would be mad if it dropped next year but I'm still not spending $1600 so I would wait for a better deal for the new one also lol
@AnthonyAllioo I personally think we will see it next year. Apple is ramping up to release a new Mac Studio AND Mac Pro here middle of 2025. No way they do that and don’t release a new display along with them. If they are lining all of that up then i imagine it’ll be a dedicated “Workhorse” event. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they launched new MacBook pros as well. M4 ultra makes sense but maybe they start releasing the M5 chips? Only the high end ones though? Idk.
MultiSoundChanger , you can use
I used it for awhile but it just plays the speakers in tandem. I’d prefer a genuine stereo split.
Why are you saying that Apple needs to do things.....why not say that you want things!
nah keep the speaker! and an extra thunderbolt port
No monitor sound system can beat a good set of stereo speakers. And they don't have to be big. For example Kanto YU4.
many of the latest products from apple feels like "half products". They create a a 50% perfect product, and other aspect is crap. it is weird.
I’d like to hope it’s because they are biding time because they have some truly mind blowing products on the release slate in a year or two. They really have been doing the 50/50 thing lately though.
13:43 apple audio midi setup not work for dual studio displays?
It does not. There’s a plugin you can download that will make it work but it just plays the speakers at the same time. You’re unable to separate left and right in the audio midi setup. Wish Apple would put out an update to let us configure the internal displays via the midi setup.
same things said over, and over, and over. lol
This display was never worth the price tag.
HDR no?!
outdated
Did I say it didn’t do HDR? The studio does do some HDR. It’s not much but it’s got an extra 200 nits.
It was already outdated when it launched. Wasn't it just a rebadge of an existing product that had been out for several years prior anyway?
Kind of? It added the solid speakers as well as the webcam and some higher brightness. Also the nicer design. It’s hard to argue against he convenience of the thing.
PD2730S
That’s a pretty dope monitor
They were $1250 on Amazon prime, if it’s $1250 for Black Friday I’m getting one. If apple comes out with a new one I’ll wait till it’s a good sale then this one will be my secondary monitor.
Idk. Im very curious to see what apple has to offer.
