I was deciding on buying a 4K high refresh rate or a ASD for programming and casual gaming. I watched almost all videos about ASD on TH-cam and still couldn’t decide what to choose. The biggest problem was that I couldn’t find a place where to see ASD in person and blindly buying such a pricey piece of tech without an option to turn it back in my country didn’t sound like a good plan. Recently I saw it while on a vacation in another country and it was mind blowing. Honestly no video can show how it really looks. 5K, glossy screen, vibrant colours. It’s like a giant floating IPad. I understood that that’s what I want. So my advice is go and see it yourself and then decide.
I have the tilt Studio Display paired with a Mac Studio M2 Max. Opted for the display due to the build quality, 5K and plug-and-play compatibility. It's pricey, yes, but it works for me...
I’ve seen a TH-cam video where the caster did some research online and found someone who had looked at many monitors for coupling to Mac OS. The secret to a clear vision is the number of pixels per inch that align with the pixels on Apple 5K monitors. One needs in the area of 220 ppi on 5K displays or 110 ppi on 4K displays. There are a few monitors that meet this criteria: some in the 27” and 24” screen sizes.
@@Fred_the_Head I guess everyone wants different things. For me, it's not worth my money if it had a detachable power cord. The non-(user)-detachable power cord is one of its best features, in my opinion. It's truly genius and demonstrates Apple's perfectionism and attention to detail.
I have a Studio Display with my Mac Studio and I love the color accuracy. However, there's one reason to buy the Studio Display every time. I use a stand up desk with a desk treadmill all the time. My 27" LG and all the other monitors I've tried bounce around. The Studio Display is WAY rock solid.
Have LG 27 5k and happy with it for much less than Apple Studio Display. Not so many options available and coming from 5k iMac, it was impossible for me to use a lesser resolution display. I was tempted to go back to a smaller size 24 inch 4K in order to not compromise on resolution. Glad to have found a 5k 27 as it is for me the best combination of size and res.
Would it be a problem for you to review how does "BetterDisplay" (with HiDPI option) app scaling works on 4K display in comparison to Studio Display native scaling?
It looks almost as good as 5K does on the Studio Display. It makes the point of exclusively buying a 5K for a sharper image and text pretty redundant. It's an amazing app.

I ordered the Mac Studio when it came out, and hemmed/hawed/paced about for almost two months deciding on a display. Even took delivery of a 4K 32" ASUS ProArt, but never actually opened the box. I knew that the cost of the ASD would soon be forgotten, but it would bug me, maybe subconsciously, about reading 5K text on a 4K display, every single time I turned it on. I sent the unopened ProArt back, and bought the ASD. I've forgotten the price as I thought I would, and love turning everything on every morning. The display on my 2015 iMac still looks perfect to me, and as I'm older than you any improved display tech in the future wouldn't do me any good anyway; this is my last display (my 2007, 24" iMac in the basement still looks good, still works, although not as sharp as the 5K modern stuff). Nice reminiscent video!
This is hilarious because I’m literally in exactly the same situation, as I have a ProArt unopened in my corridor which I’m probably going to return for the ASD. I also have an Eizo CS range monitor I’m trying out now, as I really wanted a monitor with decent colour rendering for grading, but I’m feeling disappointed about having to get speakers and a camera, as I love playing my music - plus it takes 10s to turn on.
I broke down and copped a Studio Display during a Best Buy sale last November, and I’ve been spoiled since. I had an LG Ultrawide 34” UHD monitor that served me well for over five years, but having the Apple display goes great with my M1 Max MacBook Pro, with the monitor tethered to my Caldigit TS4, another fall acquisition. As a low vision user, the sharpness and brightness of the Retina display has been a big positive. While I have a pair of reference studio monitors that sit on either side of the Studio Display, I actually once used both the monitors and the built-in speakers while watching a movie, and it was a nice experience. Nothing is forever, but I can’t see myself getting pulled away from the Studio Monitor anytime soon.
I'm using a LG UltraFine 24" (love that it is also a power hub) and a Samsung 42" 4K QLED. So much screen space that I run the MBP in clamshell when I'm in my home office. Use a pair of Home Pod Minis paired as speakers.
I actually bought the Studio Display partly on your recommendation. When previously I was a bit horrified by the price. Having bought it I'm very happy with it. It was very expensive and I had to get a loan to pay for it. But no regrets. Glad you haven't back tracked, but just pointed out other options that have come out since the Studio Display came out.
Text is one thing graphics resolution high refresh contrast are important to even if you loose a little text clarity when scalling but not when not scalling
Tell me pls, almost nobody mention about that. Has the Studio Display any fan noise? It's important for me because I need completely quite for sound recording, that's why I bought the MacBook M2 Air 15".
I have the 4K LG 24 inch Ultrafine monitor which is made for Mac. I run it at native resolution of 1920x1080 where four pixels are combined into a single virtual pixel to be displayed. It is a great display at a reasonable cost. This display is of the same quality of display on my 2019 27 inch iMac.
The dealbraker with Apple Studio Display for me is 60hz. If it would have at least 120hz then I would buy it instantly. Why? Because I use mac for work and pc for gaming on the same monitor.
There's not enough bandwidth in DisplayPort 1.4 to run at a higher refresh rate. And Thunderbolt 4 doesn't have enough bandwidth to support something like two DisplayPort streams at that resolution and refresh rate.
@@foobar6846 M4 pros and up support TB5. But since users with those processors will make up like 0,05% of the market for quite a while, there is no way Apple will update the monitor just for them.
I've used the Studio Display since it was introduced. I had used other displays. By far the Studio Display is superior. More costly but worth it. Great video, thank you!
I am staying with my 48 inch LG OLED 4k TV as a display. (with a few tricks in the service menu) It has the ideal pixel size I can still read in 4k, the most true blacks and vivid colors I've ever seen because of OLED, a superb air-mouse remote, no one-button nightmare UI for settings. And when not working I can still use it as a TV with all online streaming providers.
I finally started using a 5k display (2017 iMac) and now whenever I go back to my 2k (1440p) I immediately notice the blurriness! It kinda of sad because I had been enjoying 2k previously but now I much prefer the sharpness of 5k. Hmm, I should play with the settings on the 1440p.... For me the biggest problem with the Mac Studio is the lack of input switching- no easy way to connect to computers to it.
I still don’t understand how to solve that scaling issue if you can’t afford Studio Display. There are advices to buy a display with 110 ppi resolution per inch. Is it correct?
in my experience, while there are some great 4K displays, I always find them 'fuzzy' due to the lack of fractional scaling in MacOS. You would have thought they would have sorted this when they released the Mac Mini (which required you to bring your own monitor).
I'm rocking an old Thunderbolt display that I've got connected to my M1 MBP. It's fine, but it's starting to show some wear and tear, especially around the cable (I got it second hand) and it can sometimes come unplugged, meaning I've got to jiggle the cable around to get it working again. I'm looking at the Studio Display and the BenQ PD3200U. I really like the idea of speakers being built in as my desk at home is very, VERY small (maybe 2' deep and a little less than 4' across). I really just want there to be fewer cables on my desk because frankly, I'm getting tired of it. I'm leaning heavily toward the Studio Display.
We have a late 2012 iMac Retina display that’s still perfect & would keep it but it’s having power issues- had to change settings so only the screen goes to sleep but not the iMac. Looking at the mac studio & so confused about which display to get.
This should help your understanding. You don’t need to be at 1080p sized UI, nor compromise the scaling and worry about text. Should be watching what information your channel puts out.
The Studio Display just doesn't fit into my computer budget so last year I purchased a 2K 27" ASUS ProArt Display to use with my M1 Studio Max. It is affordable and it scales perfectly. Naturally it isn't as sharp as 4K or 5K but it suits my purposes nicely.
I have that ASUS, first hate the blurry text, but later I install BetterDisplay app and put on 2048x1152 and now looks very sharp (not as retina) but I keep it! Great monitor for the price.
I just about bought a dell 27” 4K monitor for photoshop. But after watching reviews they pointed out the size of text and how small it was . So now you’re left with changing the resolution to 1440 to increase the size of the text and other tools in photoshop. So my thinking is to give up and buy apples studio display , as I think it will have larger crisper text and tools when you’re using photoshop. I think ? The bad news is I have a brand new PC gaining rig , 4090 gpu , i9 etc , and I was hoping to connect several monitors. My oled 34” as a gaming monitor, and two Apple studios for photo editing . I think this is going to create problems in windows 11 , at least I think . I have been researching using a studio monitor with windows and apparently there’s no control over calibration and brightness without some software that’s not available anymore (at least I think that’s true ) . So anyways , now if I want to use the studio monitor I’m stuck buying a Mac mini . Gotta win the lottery here soon lol 😂
You can find the bootcamp drivers online for the studio displays but won’t be worth the effort. May want to return or sell them if you want to use both OS. Or keep them and get a Mac and you will live the displays.
@@JerrySchulzeI should mention I think I’m going to order the Dell with 1440 resolution and call it a day . Maybe some day 5k monitors will be more common and more affordable
I don't have a studio display but the i9 2020 iMac and I use two Samsung 27" 4K displays for a 3 monitor set up. I wouldn't want to use them as a primary but as two additional they work great and as I don't tend to move the productivity windows from them and they are always attached I don't get all that much window scale issues. Think those two monitors were £350 each use USB C, have used them for over 3 years now and one of the reasons I havent moved over to apple silicon is that it pains me to spend more than my 5k iMac especially to get 64gb or ram then have to pay another £1500 for the display which is identical to the display I have in my 2020 iMac and the iMac still works great so I can get some more use out of it.
Thanks for the video and review. Q. Is the height adjustable model worth it? Or should I just go for tilt. I mean like from your experience .. thanks in advance.
I don't get many of your points of view other than the ports to connect multiple computers to a single display. The webcam that you mentioned costs $300 and is huge and has a cable. I myself bought an ultra wide OLED (1440p for exact scaling) and it's has annoying "features" like dimming when I want large surfaces with bright elements or shitty speakers or fan noise to cool the monitor down. Furthermore these monitors seem to take forever to wake up from standby mode.
Thanks for watching, the point is that for other people all that stuff is OK. The studio display is great but it doesn’t have everything that some people want.
I use the Sony M9 it works really great with my 2020 MacBook Pro M1 13 and swap to my iPad Air M1 from time to time, it can charge both in the USB-C port with display port and KVM. Gives me 144Hz on the Mac and really good blacks with 96 local dimming zones and i also have a gaming PC connected for seem-less swapping. The speaker are the weakest point so I have a 2.1 system connected to the rca port. (Find a subwoofer essential for good sound)
I bought an LG display and was quite disappointed that I can't control the brightness. Can't return it so I have to find ways to make this work. Any suggestions?
I’m not gettin a new monitor until it’s high refresh and glossy OLED. I can’t wait the 32” 4K 240hz OLED from spectrum. It’s unfortunate that spectrum is the ONLY company that will make that configuration in something that looks clean and modern instead of some gaudy gamer design. Beyond 4K, resolution is the least important thing to me than all the other display qualities. Also, I could never live with a monitor that only allows one input, especially at that price point. The studio display is vastly too limiting
If you notice, the new 14" and 16" Macbook Pros have 254 PPI (not 218) and Apple is using imperfect scaling on the Macbook Airs as they have a lower PPI than the pros. Apple is choosing to give you a bit more real estate on portables compared to desktop Macs. Some great budget options for external monitors for portable Macs would be 24" QHD monitors that have around 123PPI as these would be non-retina versions of the portable Mac displays. Many of them are higher refresh rate than 4K monitors and sharp enough for productivity and less taxing on the GPU. I think BenQ, Lenovo ThinkVision, Dell & Samsung have options in this size and resolution.
I am extremely happy with the Samsung M8, which was very affordable, something like $500 for the 32 inch size that I wanted. It has a bunch of smart TV features that I can’t make use of here in Japan, but as a monitor, it certainly is fine. For gaming, I would rather get something better like an OLED TV.
My current desktop setup: M3 Pro MacBook Pro, Studio Display (non height adjustable stand) and the CalDigit Element hub.. Additionally a 2018 12.9" iPad Pro w/Magic Keyboard and with Sidecar technology, I can utilize all three displays (iPad Pro, Studio Display & 14" M3 Pro MBP display). For sound, like you Jerry, I enjoy the Studio Display speakers but I do utilize sound output from my HomePod stereo pair speakers as well - nice because they are wireless and with macOS - it is very easy to switch audio output sources. Personally, I MUCH prefer the 5K sharpness of the Studio Display. Pity it is not an OLED display but I foresee an update years away utilizing the "soon to be released" new double OLED display tech rumored to debut with the iPad Pro refresh design this spring. Of course, if that hypothetical Studio Display with OLED tech is ever made and released, the price would probably increase by about $1000 dollars - so I won't hold my breath. Grin. Finally, with my setup - what is NOT to like. Oh, one more thing. the Studio Display webcam is "OK" and easy to use. If I wish a much better webcam, I just use my iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Belkin MagSafe iPhone mount attached to my Studio Display. PS .. The really nice thing about the Apple hardware ecosystem is that their products are of such high quality that they "last forever" which means that I can add various pieces over time and build my own home ecosystem. For example, the HomePod stereo pair & the iPad Pro were purchased in 2018, the Studio Display purchased two years ago and the M3 Pro MBP just a few months ago.
I'm using the Dell U2723QE, because the bezels are thinner, so it looks better for a dual monitor setup... But if I only used an external monitor (and didn't need a PIP in parallel for the mini with Bootcamp), I would have used the studio. The difference in quality between 4K and 5K is already there, but many people don't even notice it. It's a bit like back then with 60Hz and 120Hz on the iPhone ;)
@@JerrySchulze I sit about 1 foot from the 4k monitor. A 32” might fill my field of view but then I would have less code visible vertically at one time.
@@ArseniTecH-vm1fg IPS getting retention is 100% possible. No display technology is completely safe from retention. This is very easy to test and there is a lot of information available. Given the fact it’s a static buildup charge in the liquid crystals. It’s going to come down to quality of the crystals and the polarity algorithm. And the Studio Displays is pretty bad. I’ve had 7 Studio Displays and all did the exact same thing.
@@JerrySchulze I bought a long time ago. I think I payed about $1,400. The one major drawback is I’m unable to get highest resolution when gaming on the console
I love my Studio Display, will probably get another this year :) If you work with text (in my case code), you will definitely appreciate the text sharpness. And as Jerry mentions, the speakers are great for regular use :)
Not OLED, not mini-LED backlit, no HDR, not even Liquid Retina.. Is it really worth it in 2024? And does that mean current MacBooks and iPads literally have better displays than this I suppose??
I love the apple studio display with height adjustable option, I mayn't use the height adjust but want it as it looks super nice! talk about hermes, LV level industrial design and execution. I will however continue to wait for an yr or 2 to give apple a chance to update the montior to have either OLED or mini LED tech in it. Its old enough for it to get a refresh so its better to wait then to buy the current one at the same price if you can afford to. And yes it is pricy. A used one will be a lot less cheaper and a bargin if its not scratched or abused in anyway.
I got a third party display for my Mac Studio, simply couldn’t stomach paying so much for a screen v similar to one I already had on my out-going trusty old imac 27 from a couple of years ago. Would I like the studio display? Yes. Do I think it’s worth it? No. Also, I up-cycled an old iPhone 7 as my webcam, and it looks fantastic.
I'm mostly concerned about scaling issues and blurry text. It's not that I necessarily want 5k but I just don't want any blur or scaling issues. Can I get the same sharp text on a 4k display that I would get from a windows pc and how?
I'm using the Dell UltraSharp 43 Monitor. The Studio Display is simply too small (price is another thing). I got the 43" for literally half the cost. It lives up to the name ("Sharp") but I would've preferred a 32". I don't dispute that the Studio Display is superior but not $1000 superior, not for me anyway and certainly not at that size. My 16" M1 Pro works really with Dell's monitor--its PNP is pretty awesome as well. I can use both my Mac and my XPS at the same time.
Samsung 28 inch 4K is still my secondary screen. At 100% scaling it is about perfect at ~150ppi. 5K at 28 inch is perfect, at 24inch it is too small and 30 inches is too large (though I'd take it at 5K wide with 2160p height but then you are at 21:9 again). 27 inches might just scrape by, 200ppi, 125% scaling for 150ppi effective, it would be heaven. But only at 10 bit and 90Hz min + VESA, not spending big to not have that at least.
Excellent video review, Jerry! I decided with the Studio Display with the stand and “matte finish”. Can’t remember what they are calling it these days, but I’ve been a fan of it! Back when I started using computers in the late 80’s early 90’s I had a very bad Samtron monitor that gave me glare headaches. It’s amazing how far we have come! 🕹️🎮👾 He’s hooked, he’s hooked…his brain is cooked! 👾
Outside the minus side of this Monitor, the ability to control anything without pressing button on Monitor itself or using remote. Is actually interesting 😅
It is really too bad that Apple crippled the font rendering engine in macOS. In the past macOS had pretty good font rendering on non retina displays, like every other OS these days still have. But then Apple decided that they don’t care about non-retina displays anymore and removed the font smoothing from macOS. And thanks to that fonts now look terrible on every non-retina resolution. Both Windows and Linux are doing a much better job today.
Maybe it's the central European climate or the fact that I only use electricity from a solar island system, CalDigit TB docks have never lasted longer than eight months for me :(
I’ve used an Samsung Ultrawide, a LG 4k and now the studio displays. Each has its own merits. The ultrawide is hard to beat with the 2k going 34” wide, as for the 4k to 5k, unless you are doing fine graphic arts, you probably won’t need or use the 5k. So why buy it? Because I drank the cool aide and have all apple products on my desktop.
It is annoying nobody is talking about sleeping problem with CalDigit and Macbook, after mac goes to sleep you need to unplug and plug in again usbc cable to refresh resolution. It is so frustrating!
@@JerrySchulze yes, of course, it is well known problem but they can’t publish it because of Apple restrictions, I have that written as their answer. So, I have TS4 connected with external monitor and M1 macbook and it works great, bit if it goes to sleep mode affter wake up monitor resolution is changed so I need to unplug cable and plug it again. CalDigit says it is MacOS problem with drivers, they are familiar but they are doing nothing to solve it. I need to use Coca app to have my mac waked up all the time which is really annoying, I plan to sell TS4 and buy Mac Studio so I can have all ports I need.
It's a timing/clock issue. Seems like nobody but Apple manages to make it right. LG has soooo many issues with their thunderbolt displays. I bet they use a cheap thunderbolt controller or implement a cheap real time clock on their stuff. Apple develops their own RTCs. That alone is a good reason to just buy a Studio Display if you want a thunderbolt display.
My display is the Dell 32 4K UHD Gaming Monitor - G3223Q. The text on my 4K 32" looks sharp. I have a 4K Dell 27" at work and I can't tell much difference between my 32". The 32 4K Dell is ESA Display HDR 600 and DCI-P3 95%, with a smooth 144hz refresh rate. I can use it to game with my MacBook Pro M2, or my custom built gaming PC. I don't get Apple! They market promotion on their MacBooks but then you loose that spec if you want to use a larger screen made by Apple, except for their crazy expensive monitor costing $4K+. If Apple introduced a 5K OLED monitor with 120hz - 144hz refresh rate, added back HDMI (like they did with the MacBooks) that was under $1,300 that could be a compelling product that I would consider as a replacement to my Dell 4K monitor. MacBook users don't always want to be confined to 16" inch Apple displays. At this point, my Dell 4K 32" monitor seems to be enough for me. I don't need built in speakers. Bluetooth AudioEngine speakers sound great for desktop use, and my Logitech 1080p Steamcam, although not as sharp as a 4k webcam, looks good enough for me.
I just don’t understand why more reviewers don’t recommend the VESA option. I spin this monitor all the way around and use it from the couch behind my (height adjustable) desk. The 5K and single cable can’t be beaten. I hope Apple comes out with a new version at some point.
For the cost of one Studio Display i buy four Dell 27" 4K monitors with tilt, swivel. e.t.c and 3 years guarantee. The colors on Dell are excellent. On top of that when Apple stops updating the Studio Display firmware you will have to buy a new model...
Even in 2024, due its larger screen of 32" , half of the price , and wifi TV capabilities, I'm looking for a deal for a Samsung M8 monitor. I know, the S9 is nicer even with 27", but if this last case I would go for the Apple Studio. But, any way, for saving , and for larger screen, I intend to go for the M8.
I'm changing my mind, due the low quality of the M8 display. Well, you get for what you pay. I'm considering again a Apple studio display, due superior monitor and speakers.
I had a Studio Display. It was awesome… but then I started a new job and got a Windows machine. I sold it… swapping my MBP and work machine was annoying (it worked with it). The lack of controls was a bummer. I don’t even mind 4K with a Mac - I wish someone would make a 21” 4K display. The Mac could display a smooth “looks like 1080p” and windows could run at 150% or 200% scaling. I’d buy 2.
I wanted a studio display, but it's horribly overpriced. I wound up getting a Samsung M8 for $375. I could buy 4 of them for less than a base studio display. It's more than enough for what I was after, and while I'd rather have the 5K resolution, it's really fine for everyday use. If Apple was selling the Studio Display for $799-999, I probably would have sprung for one, but at $1600? It's not gonna happen.
I use a Samsung M8 as the secondary monitor for my MacBook. It’s ok. Never truly sharp due to the scaling. After like 8th manual calibrations, at least I found a useful color profile to use with a Mac. I think S9 is better if I can grab one for under $800. Otherwise I’m waiting for the 120hz pro-motion version of Apple display.
I use my 55" 4K LG C1 as my monitor for my M1 Mac Mini. I just looked on the jungle site and can't find a 55"-65" 5K display. It's all 27" monitors. Why?
Displays are fabricated in large sheets rather than individually. The size/resolution of monitors and TVs is therefore inextricably linked. E.g, When 4K TVs became popular, 1080p displays became incredibly cheap. 27” 5k displays are a tiny niche of total display manufacturing, which is why there have only been 2 non-Apple monitors with that resolution. A TV size with 5k resolution is not impossible, but the improbability of it being manufactured at a reasonable cost makes it basically impossible.
The studio resolution of 5K is perfect, but no widescreen option, no high refreshrate.... BUT that said, 4K monitors on mac suck... because the scaling is bad. There is a reason the studio is 5K and the XDR is 6K. Both are that resolution to scale perfectly 200% and not some in between blurry mess
I got a “refurbished” Apple Studio 5K Display for a significant discount. No way I would bother with a discount 4K display. The problem with the docks you promote is the lack of USB C ports. No need for all those legacy USB A ports.
I’ve been trying o sell my 4k lg for ver a year so that I can get a studio display。 Even at 150 people don’t want to buy it. 1600 for the studio display?? - maybe manufacturers should start considering what Apple is doing, because I’m sure the cinema display’s image isn’t ten times better than. a j4k lg.
This is because cheap 4k displays are a dime a dozen and it’s easy to get a cheap one new. Look at prices of used studio displays, it’s high, because there is quality in the panels and the build that you won’t find in most 4k displays.
I learnt the hardway why 4K is useless on macs. I sold mine and replaced with 2 x 27” 2K monitors which are far superior to 4K displays on a mac. 2K or 5K are the only ones worth considering.
If you take financial literacy into consideration, probably 80% of those who own a Studio Display can’t afford it. Having the ability to buy something doesn’t mean you can afford it. I was able to get 2 27 inch LG 5K displays for just under the price of 1 studio display. Good luck finding a major difference with the display, speakers, or camera.
Wish they would do a mini update to this thing to (1) make the height stand a bit more reasonably priced and (2) to fix that godawful webcam. What were they thinking when they put that in there…?
The most important feature of a display is the display and a 27” 5k is noticeably sharper than a 27” 4k display. For me the 4k display is unacceptable even if it is cheaper and has more ports or a higher refresh rate or a better webcam.
I ended up getting a 27” LG 4K monitor for $300 that is actually pretty good. It beats my pre-Retina 27” iMac with it’s Retina-like doubling up of pixels but at the same 1080p resolution. BUT it’s not a Studio Display…the LG’s speakers suck, the USB hub is useless...it only runs at USB 2.0 speeds if the cable from the laptop is also sending video…hello??? So I use the DPI port instead. It feels like the plastic that it is and the huge external power supply is ridiculous. It’s a bargain at $300 for the image quality, but for me it just comes down to price. If I had an extra $1300 to spend, I’d be viewing this on a S.D. I know people rag on Apple about pricing but my experience since the System 8 days is that Apple just builds better hardware. The displays are better, the trackpads are better, the battery life is better and so on and so on.
The problem with 4k monitors is how Mac handles scaling. It'll take about 20% more cpu power to support 4k, vs how Mac handles 1440p and 5k displays. So 4k will look good, but it will be harder for your Mac to drive than a 5k display. You didn't mention that in your video.
The biggest problem I have is: Where is the competition? Where are the OLEDs with better overall brightness? Or mini-LEDs with enough dimming zones so that blooming isn't a problem? Where are all the 5k and 32-inch monitors that aren't curved or ultra-wide or just offer a good mix of high refresh rate, peak brightness and color accuracy? I mean, I think the Apple Studio Display is overpriced for its IPS panel. Not a single IPS panel should cost over 1,000 euros, especially if it's only 27 inches. It's simply not good enough in terms of contrast and black level. Then there's the added cost of the stands and the poor port selection. But I'm looking for a display that fits what I'm looking for, and either I have to go for cheating and try my luck or have to go way more expensive like with the Asus Pro type line and their 6k mini LEDs. its nuts. And I would say even the gamer market has gotten better monitors over the years. But they either lack good overall brightness without huge fluctuations in homogenized screen brightness. Or they're curved or they're noisy and poorly calibrated and so on. There have always been flaws. So yes, it's sad that there's no real competition for Mac users. Still, I think anyone who buys a Studio or MBP can afford a similarly priced monitor if they be better. But like always. No one steps into the field and shows that you can have similar quality and speaker but also give a better display for the money. And I think it’s possible. But no one tries to do 5k and 6k other than unreliable companies like dough.
Your whole point about the Studio Display being "stuck on a stand" is misleading, when you could have saved $400 and gotten the VESA mount ready Studio Display... exactly the same as the 4K monitor you are hyping.
Is 4k or 5k the correct question? Is'nt it more about resolution (ppi/dpi) and how the rendering is working? - So far I know, Apple does not scale fonts. Those are rendered to the screen resulotion set. If you let scale up the monitor by setting a lower screen resolution as the monitor offers, then you will see some interpolation. But probably only with a lens. So, it was just an AD vid.
I got the standard model of the Studio Display (Tilt only model) for $1299 from Best Buy during Presidents Day. No regrets! I tried 3 different 4K models (Dell S3221QS, Dell S2722QC, and the INNOCN 27M2V) before getting the Studio Display and the Dell models would sometimes flicker. The INNOCN model didn't flicker on me, but 4K resolution really hurt my eyes after awhile. The Studio Display, however, is well-built and has a clear and sharp display out of the box. Unlike the 4K monitors, the Studio Display has great sound for a monitor, so I might not even get computer speakers or a soundbar for it. So, I happy with the Studio Display and the INNOCN monitor will go to my Acer Predator 300 PC. The 32" Dell (w/ Curved Panel) will hook up to my ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo and the 27" Dell monitor will probably hook up to my 2015 MacBook Pro. Anyway... Great video!
Love my Studio Display BUT I am seriously thinking about changing to one of the newer OLED 32” monitors. Having a port for each a Mac and a console is calling me. Aside from 5K and the look of the SD, it shows its weaknesses. Let’s not mention the awful camera. Overpriced for what it is in today’s market.
Great advice
I have the tilt Studio Display paired with a Mac Studio M2 Max. Opted for the display due to the build quality, 5K and plug-and-play compatibility. It's pricey, yes, but it works for me...
Good enough reasons for me.
Yeah people often overlook this. They’re usually too fixed on resolution and forget the importance of pixel density.
@@dotinsideacircle to get 110ppi you need 27-inch 1440p monitor. for 4k it’s going to be something around 40-inch panel
I agree with this and i've two BENQ 32" displays and they look incredible with my M1 MBP.
which ones
If the studio display was $800-1000 it would sell like hotcakes.
Yep
If Ferraris would sell for $10k, they would sell like hotcakes.
Without a detachable power cord the Studio Display is not worth my money.
@@Fred_the_Head I guess everyone wants different things. For me, it's not worth my money if it had a detachable power cord. The non-(user)-detachable power cord is one of its best features, in my opinion. It's truly genius and demonstrates Apple's perfectionism and attention to detail.
@@ThomasVanhelden Dont compare a simple ips display with a ferrari man. That studio display is a VW golf
Yes it is.

Thank you so much for watching. Funny enough, I have a neighbor who did just the exact same thing recently.
It is soooo good for so many reasons.
I'm using a LG UltraFine 24" (love that it is also a power hub) and a Samsung 42" 4K QLED. So much screen space that I run the MBP in clamshell when I'm in my home office. Use a pair of Home Pod Minis paired as speakers.
that sounds great!
It is fantastic!!
I use the Studio Display with a VESA mount from Amazon Basics.
Text is one thing graphics resolution high refresh contrast are important to even if you loose a little text clarity when scalling but not when not scalling
Hi Jerry!
Is the gorilla glass provides better contrast and color vs the normal glossy dough ?
Have you seen the Kuycon display?
Tell me pls, almost nobody mention about that. Has the Studio Display any fan noise? It's important for me because I need completely quite for sound recording, that's why I bought the MacBook M2 Air 15".
I have never ever heard the fan. If you put your ear right on it you may hear a slight whooshing of air but nothing an inch or 2 away.
I think in your case you have single 1080p pixel displayed as 4 pixels. It helps to make everything really smooth.
Other monitor I love is my 32'' LG UltraFine OLED Pro 4K HDR calibrated if one needs it and OLED is hard to stop using once you start.
That's what I am afraid of.
I’m afraid that “fuzzyness” in text can lead to eye sight deterioration faster. That’s not good. What are they thinking?
@@JerrySchulze thanks for the reply
@@JerrySchulzeI should mention I think I’m going to order the Dell with 1440 resolution and call it a day . Maybe some day 5k monitors will be more common and more affordable
In Blender you can change the size of the text, Adobe should include that option too
I don't have a studio display but the i9 2020 iMac and I use two Samsung 27" 4K displays for a 3 monitor set up.
I have the Studio display versa and the M3 pro 16. I can see a difference between the colors between them and the studio display is more accurate
I wanted the Studio Displays but couldn't justify the $ so wen with 2x Dell 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor - P2721QE
The best channel when it comes to mac. Can you tell me was the gorilla glass dough better in terms of sharpness and color compare to glossy dough?
❤
Same benefits of other glass Dough but better anti reflectivity.
Stereo output volume doent work when you have two connected.
It's a bit like back then with 60Hz and 120Hz on the iPhone ;)
will u try the innocn 27m2v or the red magic 4k 5088 ?
They need a larger studio display. 27” is too small. I am currently using a 42” display.
At what resolution and how far away?
@@JerrySchulze I sit about 1 foot from the 4k monitor. A 32” might fill my field of view but then I would have less code visible vertically at one time.
Every Studio Display I've tested has had some serious image retention. Do you notice it at all on yours?
I had one. It’s using an IPs panel. It would be impossible to get retention
I purchased the Samsung Viewfinity s9 and have no regrets. I connected it to my MBP m3 and my Xbox. It took some figuring out but I’m happy overall.
Thanks for letting us know. Did you get it on sale?
@@JerrySchulze I bought a long time ago. I think I payed about $1,400. The one major drawback is I’m unable to get highest resolution when gaming on the console
I love my Studio Display, will probably get another this year :)
If you work with text (in my case code), you will definitely appreciate the text sharpness.
Can someone do a video with a studio display vs an lg c3 42” oled please

Using 27in 1440p just for proper scaling
Excellent video review, Jerry! I decided with the Studio Display with the stand and “matte finish”. Can’t remember what they are calling it these days, but I’ve been a fan of it! Impossible on 5k. The bandwith is problem right now.
Really quality video man. Thank for this review.

Yep I agree
Maybe it's the central European climate or the fact that I only use electricity from a solar island system, CalDigit TB docks have never lasted longer than eight months for me :(
With my 4k display from Walmart, it is really sharp & does what I need.
That said, I'm still considering the Studio Display
I can still recommend it highly!
I don’t have that issue at all. Did you reach out to support?
Great content Oled 12O hz 4k many sizes features and 8k
The $5k (without stand) Pro Display XDR, is 60hz.
Kuycon 27P try this one
Too expensive for most countries except Russia. For my country its a little less then an original Studio Display I checked this.
Bigger is not always better, also at the same resolution you don’t get more real estate.
Great Video! I would love to use the Apple Studio Display but its way to expensive.
I’d buy 2.
I like this idea.
This already exists, the LG ultrafine 4k first generation was a 21,5 inch and scaled a perfect 1080p picture
@@brendvd yes, but they don’t make it anymore, right?
@@JerrySchulze No, you'll have to get it used. But it's still a great option if you want to go that route.
The 5K Samsung ViewFinity S9 is $599 on amazon now. Crazy good deal.
Lots of accessories still use usb-a, like Logitech mice for example.
I'll wait for a new version, will be perfect or enough for the next years.
Good review and good advice!
If you are used to the Apple 5k display, I find it really difficult to tolerate anything less. If you can afford it, why buy less?
If you take financial literacy into consideration, probably 80% of those who own a Studio Display can’t afford it. Having the ability to buy something doesn’t mean you can afford it. I was able to get 2 27 inch LG 5K displays for just under the price of 1 studio display. Good luck finding a major difference with the display, speakers, or camera.
Looks like you don't know much about people's economy.
Very honest review.
If you work with text and experience a Retina display like the 4.5K iMac, Studio Display 5k, or the Pro Display XDR 6k then there is not going back.
Wish they would do a mini update to this thing to (1) make the height stand a bit more reasonably priced and (2) to fix that godawful webcam. What were they thinking when they put that in there…?
Answer is yes
Is that what you are using?
Yes sir, a studio display.
I love my Studio Display and you cannot convince me that I was "wrong" to get one.
Wasn’t trying to. It’s fantastic.
That cannot be true. They are tests online that deny this (Apple Silicon)
Wrong. Quit spreading hyperbole… at most, in extreme scenarios, it takes 1-3% performance load.
No external power brick is still a MASSIVE argument for the Apple screen for me. I can not bear external bricks hanging.
Yeah, there are lots of little things. I just didn’t have time to mention.
It’s a monitor you’ll never have to touch it after you plug it in unless cleaning or moving your desk I don’t think this matters in any way
that's like 98.9% of monitors
But no one tries to do 5k and 6k other than unreliable companies like dough.
its crazy expensive and not future proof but..... damn the screen looks beautiful
Just get the base model of studio display and a monitor riser should you need one.
Your whole point about the Studio Display being "stuck on a stand" is misleading, when you could have saved $400 and gotten the VESA mount ready Studio Display... exactly the same as the 4K monitor you are hyping.
That’s a good point.
Eizo Coloredge CG series all the way
The scaling thing is such a non-issue and it bothers me how much people have bought into it.
Anyway... Great video!
ease of use. big one.
