    I bought mine when it came out pretty much for photo editing, and it really stands out for that. Color calibration is exceptional from the factory, and I found that professional printing houses recommend using it with Apple’s out of the box calibration settings, because manufacturing tolerance is so tight they can print to match the display as well or better than when people attempt to calibrate a monitor themselves with the third party tools. “Real” professional photo editing monitors are also IPS, generally only 4K, snd cost even more than this does. It’s similarly good for video editing and grading. Any other use cases? I’m not going to argue with you! Get something else. As good as it is for its purpose, professional media production, please Apple, bring us an updated display! (An updated Pro Display XDR while they’re at it too, please!)

    • @TaylorBrauer
      @TaylorBrauer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You make a really good point about the manufacturing tolerances as there's probably near zero difference between one studio display and the next. That makes me think differently about the value of these for industry photo and video editors. That's a huge deal. Thanks for sharing that insight.
      I'm really interested in an updated XDR. With how fast the tech has moved in the last 5 years since the XDR was released, that could be one amazing display.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd love for them to give us an updated one of these and the XDR's too like you said, with Thunderbolt 5 now it's on their M4 Pro and Max powered Macs. Just think of all the hub goodness you can throw into one of these things from a single Thunderbolt 5 port? I'm guessing they could make them thinner too with the improvement in panel tech, they're quite chunky! It could also be pretty nice if they could use FaceID on them given they have more than enough space for the hardware, unlike the MacBook Pro's which are too skinny.

    I recently purchased Apple Studio Display after a long consideration compared with wide screen monitor for my development work. After a lot of reviews check, I have concluded myself that there is no other monitors work better for Mac. I know I do not play game and I do not use Windows machine. I do not need any extra peripherals like HDMI and USB-A. Mac just seamlessly works with one cable instantly and reliably. I am into this Apple Design theme. It is a perfect monitor for my needs even in 2024. I am just happy to sit in front of this beautiful monitor which motivates me more to be productive rather than working with plastic ugly looking monitor.

      Totally agree with you. No better monitor on the market to accompany my MacBook Pro.
      Those complaining about 60Hz refresh rate simply overlook the fact that Thunderbolt 3/4 simply cannot deliver 5K at 120Hz.
      Apple set out to make a Thunderbolt display to accompany your Mac, not an HDMI display that can also be hooked to Windows machines.
      I myself waited a while for the Apple Studio Display with VESA mount to show up in the Apple refurbished section and immediately snatched it up for $300 CAD less than normal price. My aging eyes are thanking me for the purchase.
      While I agree with reviewers that say the height and tilt adjustable stand is expensive, I rarely hear them talk about the VESA mount option. A decent monitor arm will set you back $100-$200 but you also get way more height and lateral side to side positions than any monitor stand can give you. I myself opted for that due to my motorized standing desk. No stand on the market could ever get the monitor high enough for me when standing.

    • @hirobnet
      @hirobnet 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@mikeg5372 I excluded VESA mount option completely after seeing the review of VESA mount option. At least for me, the external looking without Aluminium stand lacks the premium design and iconic design language from Apple, but I understand the it is more practical with VESA mount, but I barely adjust monitor position once setup.

The staff at the Apple store have seen all my videos of the failure and they were astonished, of course never seen anything like it. They looked over the Display with a fine tooth comb but never opened it up (looking for drop damage). They could see from the video it's a destroyed unit. I purchased it from Apple 18 months ago and I'm in the refund process. Sadly that refund process isn't as automatic as it should be and thats sad. And what's wild is they didn't keep the very damaged Studio Display. The bricked, burnt out Studio Display is back home.

    The problem with these reviews, and there are many of them like this, the reviewer tells you not to spend your money on Apple studio display but they’re clearly happy that they have such a nice display. They tell you to spend your money elsewhere, but they don’t tell you where that elsewhere is. And if they do end up telling you where that elsewhere is, the monitor clearly isn’t on the same level as the Apple studio display. These reviews could be better.

      @@TaylorBrauer That's fair, it's a review not a monitor guide. Maybe what I'm getting at is...long-term reviews seem to come to the same conclusion: it's over-priced, you can pay less if you don't mind a "lil less", but there is nothing else on the market that can give you the same experience. Buyer should decide whether they don't mind a "lil less". Totally no fault of your own, and I appreciate the contribution to more perspectives about the ASD.

      @@stevemckinney6831 I get what you’re saying. I think there’s a perceived depreciation of something in a long term review because there’s usually new products on the market that are lower priced and sometimes better. That does make long term reviews difficult. I think in the case of the ASD it was overpriced at launch but still had that “Apple exclusive experience”. I think a product going through a case of “long term review and it’s still worth it” is the M1 Pro/max MBP. It’s still a powerful machine and great value compared to new M MBPs. Anyways, I do see where you’re coming from better now. Maybe there’s a way I can take your feedback and make better reviews with it in mind in the future.

    4:40 My Dell ultrasharp 2405FPW was very uniform, and no backlight bleed. When it finally died after 15 yrs of use, it was extremely difficult to find a modern (LED backlit) IPS that was as uniform as well as not have backlight bleed. I ended up buying a used 2011 27" Dell ultrasharp as my replacement.
    I suspect the switch from ccfl to LED backlighting as the problem. Matching color and intensity for a half dozen CFL tubes is probably far cheaper than to do the same for the hundreds to thousands of LEDs for modern IPS. Most manufacturers just cheap out I guess.

    • @TaylorBrauer
      @TaylorBrauer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The ultrasharps are pretty impressive. It's been a while since I've seen a modern one in person and they always seem to be very high up there in terms of panel quality. You're probably right about cost and most people probably don't even notice.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      LED's are far, far, far, far more accurate at colour temperature and intensity than CFL, which take a while to warm up. It's just most display makers are cheap. They won't bother to match things up with equally birght partner LED's like Apple do. Even Dell's UltraSharp displays are pretty garbage these days compared to how they used to be. They used to be the only thing I'd actually recommend people buy from them but seeing some of their more recent ones... nope. It's a real shame, it's getting harder and harder to find good quality monitors these days, the market is flooded with so much crap. It gets extra niche when looking at 5K like this thing, the options are miniscule.

  • @raulhdeza
    @raulhdeza 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I would buy this monitor for one reason alone, regardless of the drawbacks: I own a 27 inch Thunderbolt Display which came out in 2011. I've been rocking this thing for years and years and it is even today a very solid competitor to many modern monitors, because the image quality and sound alone are hard to beat. I use it with an M1 with a thunderbolt adapter, and It performs like brand new over a decade later. So for its predecessor to be that good of a product I believe the Studio Display is it's only true replacement.

    Looking at all the metrics you've mentioned, it's not the best in any one aspect. However, taking a step back, it's easily the most balanced 5K monitor you can buy. It does everything pretty good. For example, as you've mentioned, the alienware monitor is 2x more color accurate, but it isn't nearly as bright. No other monitor I know uses glass as part of the display rather than plastic. No other monitor on the market offers nano-textured etching to create the matte coating which provides the maximum optical clarity while providing industry leading anti-glare. No monitor offers a 6 speaker array capable of Dolby Atoms sound. No monitor on the market provides the deep macOS integration and is ready to go when you wake your mac in 1 second. No 5K monitor is cheaper than Studio display while providing the exact same construction material, design, functionality.
    Anyone buying this monitor should not consider one metric, but looking at all the benefits combined. This monitor is more accurate than most monitors out there, offers 5k resolution, 6 speaker array, a camera that while isn't great provides center stage functionality, 3 mic arrays with noise cancellation for super clear voice and video calls, nano-texture option, industry leading optical clarity for sharper and brighter looking display, and deep integration with macOS all baked into a single package. The better comparison would be LG ultrafine. However, that display has the cheapest plastic enclosure with an unaesthetically pleasing design. Another competing product would be Samsung ViewFinity S9. It gets close, but it uses the standard plastic matte material for the display, doesn't include dolby atmos capable speakers, doesn't have an included webcam that provides substantially better image quality than the studio display, and cuts cost by using a plastic back.
    The bottom line is, for the price that you pay for, there is no competitor out there that can match Apple Studio display for the overall performance, functionality, and design (including use of materials).

    • @TaylorBrauer
      @TaylorBrauer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a really great perspective of this display. Its got a lot of premium features rolled into one while not being particularly revolutionary in a single space. One caveat being those speakers. They are unreal for a monitor. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    I compared the Studio Display to a Samsung OLED at Mirocenter today. Forgetting about the Apple build quality/materials being 100x better than the Samsung....I still found the image more appealing on the Studio Display and i think it's due to having the glass panel on the screen. Something about having the glass there really provides a sense of DEPTH to the image and colors. The image on the Samsung OLED just looked flatter to me while the Studio Display had a more 3 dimensional quality, despite surely having a worse contrast ratio on paper.

    Thanks for the concise and useful information, Taylor! I'm researching this monitor as an option. I use mac computers (27-inch imac and macbook pro laptop) due to my work as a writer, translator, and editor, which involves reading text on the computer for 8 or more hours a day. (Also, I use three Adobe products on a consistent basis.) So, a good screen that displays text accurately and in focus is important. I've also heard and read eye doctors who recommend the retina display because it lowers the risk of eye strain and long-term vision damage. I wouldn't use the studio display for gaming, so that's not a factor. Neither is the camera, which I would need mostly for meetings. Other monitors I've checked at lower prices are 4K and don't have the 218 ppi that help make text on Mac screens so sharp. BenQ announced a 5K last fall, but it seems like it's not yet out for sale, and its price may be comparable (or higher) than the studio display. Any additional insight would be greatly appreciated.

      Yw! I'm glad you liked the video. I would recommend looking at the 4k OLEDs. Most of them are less stressful on your eyes than IPS screens but this is going to vary based on your eyes. So, I'd recommend more research there if that's a concern. As for text clarity, 4k at 32" looks really sharp. There's a much more noticable different from 1440p to 4k than there is from 4k to 5k. There's also new 24" 4k OLEDs on the horizon that were announced at CES. These will be even sharper than the 32" 4k OLEDs.

    This might be the best objective review of the ASD I’ve seen. Good work! I’ve owned 2 ASDs since it was first released back in ‘22 to use with my MBP. I was (and still am) blown away at the picture and sound quality. Also, as you mentioned, the build quality it top notch. I’m not a gamer so the 60hz refresh rate wasn’t really a deal breaker. HOWEVER… there are some other little issues that I’m not happy with:
    1. No on-device controls. It would be nice to at least have a power button.
    2. It’s running an A13 chip and iOS. I’ve noticed that over a period of a week or so, I have to unplug and plug-in the monitor to reboot because video conferencing audio (FaceTime, Teams, Zoom) sometimes gets distorted. This has has happened on the first ASD I purchased in 2022 and then on the 2nd ASD I purchased just a few months ago. (Apple support recommended the reboot.)
    3. Screen height. Even if you get the height adjustable stand, at the lowest setting it sits uncomfortably high (for me).
    I’m hopeful that Apple is going to come up with a refresh for the ASD before the end of the year but I won’t hold my breath. Still, I would recommend the current model but only if it’s available at a significant discount from the $1600 base price. Even with the picture and build quality, it no longer commands the premium price.

    • @TaylorBrauer
      @TaylorBrauer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you, I really appreciate that. Your second point is really interesting. I can't believe it happened to both your monitors. I haven't experienced it yet, but I always use my AirPods Pro for video conferencing so maybe I just haven't noticed it.
      I'm glad you confirmed the height on the adjustable stand is too high. In all the videos I've seen with that stand I'm always like, "That looks like it would be too high for my desk at the lowest setting." It would be awesome if the next stand had a rail system instead of that lever piece.

    5K 60Hz more or less saturates the DisplayPort 1.4 bandwidth, which is what this uses. I don't think anything right now can actually run 5K at 120Hz without combining the signals from two sources like the early 5K panels we saw from the likes of Dell, that needed to use two DisplayPort ports that it then stitched together. It might be doable with Thunderbolt 5, that has an insane amount of bandwidth, but I don't think DisplayPort has a standard yet that does it as a single stream which is what Apple prefer to do. Remember, they made their own timing chip for the original 5K iMacs to do this over a single DisplayPort stream to avoid the stitching issue which had a tendency to desync if one side of the panel was being updated at a different latency.
    IPS is still superior for colour accuracy than the other stuff on the market right now too. Which is what market this is aimed at. Plus a 5K OLED is goiung to cost a LOT more than this does. 5K panels in general are already super rare, which pushes up costs.
    Lack of daisy chaining is part of the same issue as the refresh rate. It's at the limit of the connection. Thunderbolt 3 has 40Gbit/s bandwidth, almost all of it is used up by the 5K signal (32.4Gbit/s), there isn't much left for the 3 USB-C ports.

I dont do gaming and prefer a simple clean desk setup and no hassles. Do you think this fits my purpose ( cost not being a consideration) ? Appreciate your advise, cheers. Liked and subbed

      I would say yes, if you have a Mac. It should work with most Windows laptops with a thunderbolt port but there's no guarantee or support. When you're using it for your livelihood you want it always working.

      That's hard to guess as it seems Apple kinda does whatever they want. I'm going to estimate 2 more years and it'll be tandem OLED. Guess we'll see how that pans out haha.
