  • Detailed review and test of the MG4 Essence 64kWh model, including price, features, efficiency, warranty, and driving dynamics.
The MG4 is one of Australia’s cheapest electric vehicles, but this RWD hatchback is also impressive to drive. It is great value. Here, we test the middle-size battery - the 61.8kWh usable pack in Essence trim ($49K driveaway).
Rivals to the MG4 include the Cupra Born, BYD Atto 3 and Tesla Model 3.

How much range did we get? Our tested range for the MG4 64kWh (61.8kWh usable) was 401km in mixed driving. That compares to 357km urban/298km highway in the MG4 51kWh model (50.8kWh battery usable).

Interesting to note the range and efficiency, while good , is no better than our 4yr old Kona. Lots of other improvements tho.

Dont know how you got it that low. After 1500km in mine in Aoteoroa I cant get near that. My biggest complaint is that its thirsty!
I havent had any issue with the centre console. Were you braking or using regen on most of those corners as it appeared that the rear indicators rather than the brake lights were lighting. If it uses the indicators for regen that’s smart.

Had my MG4 Essence 64 since end of August. No issues with my knee hitting the console. A couple little issues with a software glitch in the multimedia display and a couple times phantom braking with active cruise on. Plenty of cars have similar issues. Other than that it’s been awesome… Fun, well balanced and handling little car. Highly recommended.

Its the eletric car revolution going on in China right now. Just come back from a trip to China, 60% of cars on the road in the large cities are all electric. All the Taxis are electric. There are car brands that I have never heard of but all look incredible futuristic. I come back to Australia and feel like we live in the 1990s. Brands that left a good impression on me are Nio, Li Auto, Avatr and of course BYD rule the road in China, they are everywhere. I just hope they bring some cool cars to Australia.

Lane keep assist is a bit of a pain as it is on by default (Euro NCAP requirement) but it encourages you to drive accurately in the centre of your lane. Do that & you won't notice it. I've owned mine for just over a month & 1800km & am still learning stuff. I love it. Punches way above its weight. 50.4k on the road in Diamond Red with 3 k rebate from NSW gov't so 47.4k. Never touched my knee on the centre console so don't see the issue there. This is my first EV & it's effortless to drive & feels way more grunty than the figures suggest. The iSmart app is great & I have installed a 7kW charger in my garage. The app provides a car health check whenever it is opened. My energy efficiency figures are much lower than this test but most of my driving so far has been at 110kMH with a sea level to 170m max height & back.
The touch screen caused me some early issues & I kept pressing too hard and long. I was showing a friend & she said you are pressing too long, said just tap it, demonstrated that & it worked easily for her. I changed that & now it is easy.

An impressive price at around $50,000 AU on road for this car. The Excite 64 comes in at well under fifty thousand on road which is a steal. The Essence 64 ticks all the boxes with larger stylish wheels and slightly better seats with map pockets included. It looks like a 400km plus range is attainable with the 64kWh battery depending on driving style with some awesome performance available on demand. Welcome to the world of rear wheel drive fun well equipped Electric Vehicles. The EV version of the venerable hot hatch has arrived.
The MG4 Essence 64 looks like the sweet spot in the range and is an excellent EV and excellent value for money.

In the UK a comparison was done between tesla 3 and mg4 to test which was the cheapest to operate. Over about 300miles/500km result was Tesla was more expensive to buy, but running costs significantly cheaper, and tesla infrastructure significantly better and more reliable. Can we have a similar comparison here? No matter which car, i still believe infrastructure in Australia for electric cars is poor and not improving fast enough.

No. 90% of charging events in the US are at home. Same is true here in Oz, and most ev owners here in Oz also have rooftop solar pv installed (30% of all Ozzie homes have solar pv). Thus, charging at home from your own solar might cost you 5c to 15c per kwhr during the day, or 35c per kwhr at night, way under the 60- 79c per kwhr Tesla charge at their fast chargers here in Oz.
The entry level MG4 is $20k AUD cheaper than the cheapest Tesla, here in Oz.
Both MG and Tesla owners mostly charge at home here in Oz.
@ 5c per kwhr (effective sacrificed solar fit for many owners) 'fuel' is a trivial cost. Eg, $3 AUD for a 60kwhr fill up.
meaning that the MG4 is vastly cheaper to buy, finance and insure compared to a Tesla that is $20k AUD more expensive.

    • @chasingcars

Depends if you charge at home or with a public charger. At home would be around $25 for 500km, a public charger would range between $32-$55 at current charging prices in Australia. By contrast an ICE hatch of the same size would cost around $75 to fuel for 500km and about $50 for a very frugal hybrid.

MG has nation wide dealership & service centres. 7 year unlimited car & battery warranty is great. Battery made by CATL, the worlds largest battery manufacturer. CATL state that if the battery is maintained as specified you can expect about 1 million km before degrading to warrant replacement. Some car manufactuers in China already provide a million km battery warranty. Prejudice against Chinese manufacture is your choice but in not based on evidence. Some reviewers have stated the MG4 build quality exceeds that of Mercedes & BMW among others. My experience, better than any previous car i've owned.

Thanks for the review. It's clearly a good car to drive - but I wouldn't buy one because of the Chinese government connection. I also have a few concerns about safety: according to ANCAP, underneath the "5 star" safety rating - protection for the drivers chest and the rear passengers head is marginal in a frontal offset collision. ANCAP also deducted points for that centre console near the knee - a leg safety hazard. Whiplash protection for rear passengers was rated as poor. There are no airbags to prevent passenger-driver head contact in a side-on collision.

Same Chinese connection for anyone who uses an Iphone or drives a Tesla Model 3 or Y.

The MG4 is ANCAP 5star rated.
Your house is full of Chinese made goods,
Most Teslas made now have Chinese made batteries,
The device you typed your comment on was made in China.
      Your point is ?

@@michaellee1955 No its not. The retail profit on a Tesla goes to Tesla shareholders. The profit on an MG goes to the Chinese Government. Pretty basic stuff....

@@nordic5490 I never denied it has "5 stars". I just pointed out that this doesn't mean it has great passive safety. It's worth digging into the reports, and you will see that two cars with 5 stars are often far from equal. Alternatively, you can go with the superficial 5 stars, and then don't complain when you face life threatening injuries that would have been avoided in another car.....
