  • The much talked about, MG4 has arrived on NZ shores and it's well worth the wait. Fresh design, heaps of EV range, feature-laden and priced to sell. We take the 64kWh 'Essence' model for a drive and find out just how good it is.
Thanks for watching, we'd appreciate a like and subscribe.

I’ve got an Excite and love it. The biggest thing aside from the sheer pleasure of driving this car is the extent to which owners winge about software. All new cars have lane assist and a suite of many other things that it has to have! Just get in, drive and enjoy…so much fun.

hi, yea it drives nice, took one for test drive last weekend and liked it so put a deposite on a 64 essence in grey , also there is no mg4 that has a panoramic glass roof .

Great to hear from an owner (or soon to be). Let us know when you get it. As for the sunroof, we thought the xpower would get one.

The video mentions the long range gets a glass roof. Certainly didn't in Australia.

@@mikecamimo Yeah we made an incorrect assumption that the top of the range would have it - they don't

Nice review. I guess technically you could just take the center headrest off in case you want to maximize visibility and typically nobody sitting in middle? Wonder also why some versions don't have the rear windscreen wiper at all and some do. Makes the argument a bit weird that it is not needed because of aerodynamics. e.g. In the Nordic countries there seems to be no wiper at back. Seems weird considering the snow too.. good if you have it! :).
By the way, you didn't test the driving assistance systems too much. They have collected some criticism in some reviews and would have been nice to see if there have been any fixes yet (according to some reviews lane keeping can try to take you off ther road or at least feel like it and adaptive speed adjustment can be bumby).
Personally when I went for a test drive a while back (64kwh model) it was a very nice car to drive. Enjoyed it much more than e.g. Volksvagen/Cupra models tha feel very "heavy" to drive compared to this. In MG4 one thing I noticed was that it seemed I needed to set the climate control (was a bit hard to access by the way) to about +5 degrees than the number shown to make it seem like normal compared to other cars. Although there were some downsides considering the pricepoint it seemed still like a nice deal. If they fix these issues with patches it would get even better.

Thanks, we really appreciate the feedback. Get your point on the rear visibility and in fairness wasn't expecting too much anyway (being a hatchback). Was unaware of the rear wiper differences, wiper means more drag?
As far as the ADAS goes, it's a marked improvement on the ZS but a fair way away from a Merc (guess you get what you pay for). I personally found the Lane Keep too assisting but Matt was Ok with it. Adaptive cruise was fine for me, but I always seem to find my right foot hovers over the pedals regardless.
Glad you enjoyed the test drive and agree it drives nicely (not just for the price either), AC temp wasn't an issue as far as I could tell, but I tend to use heated seats more in EVs - good to know and will keep an eye out on the next test.
Cheers again for the great comments.

This is the MG4 2023 (2024) refresh. The original MG4 had no mid headrest and no rear windscreen wiper. There was also no one pedal driving and in australia you get reverse camera on the base excite model (which annoys me lol cause that's why I'm getting the trophy/essence)

We just took delivery of an MG4 (65kw) and wasn't expecting a rear wiper but it has one!.
