MG4 Essence 64 - REVIEW - funky meets frustrating

  • The MG4 certainly looks the part - modern, taut and angular. It all suggests it's happy to stand out amongst the amorphous shapes of most cars in its class. The RWD drivetrain is also a real bonus for modest thrills on winding roads. But accessing some of the on-board tech is fiddly. Read the handbook then come for a drive.

Charge to 80% for your normal daily drive & lets face it that is probably 90% of most peoples car usage. I charge 1-2 time a week. LKA can be a bit of anuisance but if you turn the assist level down to weak it is not that intrusive at all. It does teach you to drive accurately & if you do that you won't even know you have LKA on. 100% charge for trips will not degrade the battery if it is used say the morning after the charge or straight away. I did a 500km drive at 110kmh 90% of the time with 1 20 minute stop for a topup at a 75kWH charger which was just enough time for lunch & comfort stop & arrived home with 35% charge left & 15.8 kW/100km for the journey. I'd love to be able to save my favourite settings but I have got used to setting them now as I reverse out of the garage. It's not perfect but it is a fantastic car to drive. I love it. ICE is for dinosaurs.

Your forgot to mention that you have the option of various modes which increase or decrease the range .

It's perfectly OK to go to 100%if you are doing a long run no damage will happen as you will be using the full range of the battery rather than doing short journeys

I think charging at home to 100% on a 7kw charger is not going to cook the battery? He’s being a bit precious.

Really like the review, just one point though, I have the exact same car and you can charge to 100% but it does not like being left at this level for days. My understanding is that the impact then is minimal to the point where for me I am not worried about it, but would not keep leaving it for days at a time a 100% but you have to make your own mind based on research out there. Finally just to say that I charge mine every 8 days, on a special over night rate which equates to $29 Australian Dollars per 1160 Kilometres or 1000 miles, ( I live in Wales). I love the car.

Thanks for your comment. Glad to hear the MG4 is proving good company for you. And thanks for sharing your experiences of charging and the economy you get from it. Hope it continues to satisfy for years to come. Cheers for watching. Blu. 👍

Hi, nice review, fact you don't use any power from main battery if you just sitting there as AC, radio, wipers, lights are used by the 12 volt battery just like in an ice car.
