We bought a wireless car play dongle (Car2play I think) for our MG and then could use wireless charging and wireless CarPlay. Worked flawlessly.
Ok good to know!
Great informative review as always thanks!!
Pleasure!
One of the best car reviews I've ever seen, thanks mate 👍
Thank you that’s very kind of you
Great review. Got to ask MG, why no 51 Essence. I want all the goodies and LFP
Agreed, 51 Essence would be awesome
Thanks for affirming my decision to get one, Tom. 👍 Just one more sleep until pickup day, and no more reliance on Big Oil. 😁🎉
Woo! Congrats and enjoy!
On the wireless charging pad when you have a wired connection to your phone, the Polestar 2 has an option in the settings to turn off the wireless charger.
Brilliant
I wonder if the settings for the safety controls that revert to defaults each start, are stored in the driver profiles ?
Quite possibly … but why default back to null? Hopefully fixed with next software update
I agree with you on the LFP vs NMC, that and the indicators on the wrong stalk are really turing me off, though it would be my primary choice.
Hopefully MG can release the Essence 64kWh in LFP next round. Maybe the size of the chassis/wheelbase precludes it given LFP is less dense? 🤷♂️
Alternatively 51kWh LFP with Essence trim would be awesome
True @@LudicrousFeed but I am ready to buy a $50k EV now , I don't want to wait another year.
Ah well.
Hello Tom,
I just stumbled about your review coincidentally and watched immediately, since I own an MG4 64kWh for about 5 weeks.
I was wondering which variants are available (and about their naming) in Australia, since I'm from Germany. What I could find, and according to your shown specs, my "MG4 64kWh Comfort" seems a compromise between the 51 Excite and 64 Essence (which is named "Luxury" in central Europe, excluding UK).
Means, my variant has your range (on average), but only parking radar (no camera), no auto-foldable mirrors, no heated steering wheel or seats, only manually adjustable seats.
Fun fact: I also miss the lack of memorizing some infotainment adjustments like drive efficiency mode. My hope goes to a future update...
Same, my critics go against the NMC batteries, instead of LFP. I'd prefer them for sustainability reasons mainly.
But for me, it's 50% long drive profile, means approx. 8.000 km / year trips from 250 up to 700 km.
For a single like me, the size is HUGE, esp. since my last EV was a Fiat 500e (13 months rental), as effordable entry into electric driving. Even with that tiny car I managed up to 650 km per day, going on a medieval camping, packed to the roof, including a self-build camping solar pv and a long-bow.
Now, I'm looking towards the next long road trip absolutely relaxed.
I already have the trailer hook installed, at first not for a trailer, but for a bycicle carrier for my new ebike (pedelec 25).
Next accessory will be the V2L adapter, to use the car battery as external expansion for my offgrid solar pv battery (7.2 kWh).
All in all, the car is the perfect match for my needs, even the price:
I got one of the first slightly used ones, only one year old and 14.000 km on the clock, that was reduced by ~25%, compared to new. This was the only chance for me to buy.
Again, thank you very much for your inspiring review!
Maybe my experience above is interesting for you or the community. 🙂
Greetings right through our earth's core, 🌏👋😉
Gwydion / Marc
Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like you’re enjoying it a lot 😁
Your car sounds a lot the “Excite 64” as it is badged in Australia. It’s essentially the Excite 51 with a 64 NMC battery
@@LudicrousFeed Thanks for yor kind answer, Tom!
And yes, I agree. Thanks for the naming hint, I didn't get anything about it before. 👍
BTW: I whish you a nice spring and summer, esp. lots of solar energy to harvest. On my side of mother earth I haven't seen much energy by sun for the last two months, now Winter beginning, today with the first snow spreading across central Europe and thus falling into my garden, on my MG4, my motorbike and my solar panels. I'd like to be in Australia right away... 🌞
As a 51 owner, is the essence a more complete package? Yes
Do I regret it, nope, not at all.
Awesome! Enjoy the 51! 🤩
Likewise, as a 51 owner, I wrung my hands for a while trying to decide between the Essence 64 or the Excite 51. I could afford the difference, but I really wanted that LFP battery, didn't need the extra range and the extra cash just felt like diminishing returns.
If there was an Essence 51 LFP trim I'd have gone with that.
No regrets on my purchase though, love this car.
Agree @AlastairCunningham
Essence trim in 51 kWh LFP would be an absolute winner
Glad to hear this, I have a 51 coming on Friday and was going back and forth between 51 and 64 essence. At the end of the day most of the extra features seemed a bit redundant for me, so went with the 51. I only test drove the 64 so hope the 51 is just as fast
Thank You Guys
👍
I’d say it is in reference to Joy and me with “guys” as a colloquial gender neutral term
@@LudicrousFeed yes I should of said Tom and Joy with all Joys great camera work. You two work very hard for us.
This car has veen tested in roadtrips in Europe and ... it's not painfull due to the flat charging curve of 130ishs kW until 50%. That makes it a winner when compared with other chargingg crawlers with even bigger batteries.
I’ll have to test the DC charging when I get the loan of the XPower 🏎️
Keep up the reviews. I completely support honest reviews - would rather hear what you think.😀
You’ll hopefully get that on my channel!
does the toilet finder via voice assistant come as standard across the MG4 range?
Didn’t seem to activate when I had the Excite variant …
Just checking but the base model does have 1pedal driving now via an update? I'm thinking about something for my daughter and didn't really want to go more expensive than the base model
Yes 1-pedal is now available across all variants
Hi, thanks so much for your reviews. On efficiency, would you say that these small hatchbacks are more efficient than the Model 3? I would have thought so, except that going by your reported efficiency (17kwh/100km), it seems less efficient than the Model 3 (12.5kwh/100km). Would you agree? I may have got my calculations wrong. ( I understand Model 3 has 5 miles / kWh)
My road trips in the Model 3 and Model Y in 2023 demonstrated an efficiency of both vehicles around 14-15 kWh/100km so yes it would appear they are still more efficient than the MG4 ...
@@LudicrousFeed Wow, that's fantastic. Something I shall look forward to when driving an EV is to learn how to drive efficiently. Thanks again for all your content, I am trying to decide what EV to get and your content (along with others) are helping me select. I really appreciate the Chinese EVs, but also admire the Model 3 for its efficiency, minimalism and software.
Great review Tom on a great car. This is the car I’m recommending to everyone. We can’t have everyone driving Polestars can we! Just imagine if Tesla had built something practical like this?
Agreed! A great value car for mass adoption 👍 For sure Tesla need to bring out a town hatchback for this segment
If only this had an LFP battery! Such a great car but gets harder to justify now with the longer range and improved luxury of the Seal. Love the MG4 64 Essence, I can only hope they upgrade the battery to LFP and drop the price a little to better compete against the Seal
@@Clove_Parma if only the Seal had one pedal driving.
I took the MG4 for a test drive recently and it was fun to drive. However, for almost the same money you would pay for the essence 64, you could get a base model Seal. If you had to choose, which want would you buy?
That’s a very good point - suddenly at the same price point the Seal is very compelling
Great that consumers have this choice now 🙏
Having spent the last few years in Europe I have to get used to you driving on the left and overtaking on the left as well.
imagine doing that on the freeways/highways in Europe 😊🙄
Haha. This is us watching videos from Europe/US
What about the ride quality? How would it compare to say the BYD Atto3? I found that car to be quite comfortable on bad urban roads. How is this compared to that?
I found the Atto 3 quite floaty particularly at high speed - I've made comment on this in my previous Atto 3 videos. The MG4 Essence suspension is smoother and I feel it is more stable even when turning and cornering. Certainly better than the GWM Ora at a similar price point. I haven't driven the BYD Dolphin yet so can't comment on its ride quality.
Thanks Tom! Didnt drive the Atto3 at higher speeds so maybe you're right. Good to know that this is better.
Also thanks for doing this review. I was quite interested in this variant & no one seemed to have done a detailed review like you. Appreciate your objectivity & sharing some very good feedback on the cars merits/demerits 👍
My 2C worth as an owner of Essence 64 for 2 months. MG4 has a slightly stiff suspension which makes it less comfortable on urban roads, great for smooth surface or motorway.
Maybe I just prefer the firmer suspension!
Are the seats heated in this model?
Yes the front seats
The Cupra Born isn't Spanish made. It comes out of the same factory as the ID3.
Yes apologies and thanks for the clarification. Spanish brand Cupra
The MG has 140KW charging when the dolphin tops out at 80KW and a slightly bigger battery. Thats the only plus I see for this car over the Dolphin premium.
The charge rate is a huge bonus
@@LudicrousFeed For real. I'm just waiting for these to flood the 2nd hand market in a few years. I reckon round $25k+ would be a great deal with a few thousand Ks on it.
I know this is old but if you plug an iphone into usb it turns off the wireless charging in the phone itself so not an issue having it on a charger..The phone controls the Qi charger
Good to know 👍
Im a tradie , mostly work with in a 50 km range return trip to home but still like to have a 450 range for some weekend get aways , wish one manufacturer would bring out a working class guys ute with this MG features.
There's a Plug in Hybid BYD Ute currently in Australia being tested so hopefully a BEV version is not far behind: www.drive.com.au/news/byd-ute-prototype-arrives-renders/
@@LudicrousFeed thankyou for the update .
I've got the x power and it's a beast lol
💪
The black roof area could have been a solar panel this is a missed opportunity in my opinion.😊
Yeah true - good for V2L also
Solar panel that size would be good for V2L, but that's about it. Probably not worth the weight and cost.
Compare it to a (similarly RWD EV) Cupra Born fgs!! Not a silly little FWD BYD Dolphin of Ora Cat. And see how it stacks up! Both the Born (170kw) and MG4 Excite (150kw) are similar RWD EV Hatchs in our AU market right now.
Stay tuned I’ve got the XPower variant review coming up where I mention the Born
@@LudicrousFeed Are you kidding me mate? The upcoming Xpower has over 300kw of power (320)kw!!!! I REPEAT my comment.
This MG4 *Essence (150kw) SHOULD be directly compared to a similarly sporty and powered RWD EV Hatch....like the Cupra Born (170kw).
But the Cupra Born 77kWh is the same price as the XPOWER though. Comparable price or comparable specs?
@@LudicrousFeed Missing the point here entirely. An MG4 *Essence is not a competitor for the tiny underpowered FWD Dolphin and Ora. It IS a competitor to the RWD Cupra Born.
But I'm reviewing the Essence here
Ok ok I'm toying with you - I see your point 😉
Great review Tom. Yes RWD always trumps FWD but . . . That MG interior is dark, bland and depressing compared to the BYD Dolphin Premium. No sunroof yet what, $2k dearer than the BYD? The BYD centre screen is significantly larger and can be portrait/landscape utlised. No lag like the car you are demonstrating.
Your review was very fair but a comparison test with the BYD should be on your to do list (please).
TBH at ~$40k pricepoint where MG4 and Dolphin compete the former wins easily, but IMO at ~$47K Dolphin wins.
I’ll try to get my hands on a Dolphin in early 2024
I test drove a BYD Dolphin premium, and an MG4 essence.
The dolphin's interior was kind of a turn off. Like when VW relaunched the beetle, it's going to look old and dated very fast. The Seal had a much nicer interior! Also, wasting an entire steering wheel button on the landscape/portrait orientation change for the centre screen is a metaphor for the whole car - a bit gimmicky.
The BYD driving experience was also.. terrible. I am only 5'9" and I felt cramped in the Dolphin.
It did have every conceivable feature, came with a V2L cable, LFP Battery, etc., though. And it's very cheap (especially in Qld after rebates). I can see why on paper it looks like a no brainer.
The reality of driving one made me choose the MG4 though.
If only dolphin have better front exterior, it looks like a clown car from the front
nice but i prefer front wheel drive or give me all wheel drive. and ofcource lfp batteries.
I guess Dolphin is for you then! 😃
i want avoid chinese too lol. waiting for kona ev 2024. @@LudicrousFeed
Oh yes the 2024 Kona will be a good option
Except no LFP
Any reason why? Drives worse being FWD, only real advantage is maybe better packaging for the boot?
@@Clove_Parma Turning circle usually a lot better. My Atto has a vastly tighter turning circle than my Model 3, very agile in car parks, u turns etc.
I just wish I liked the way it looks, I need RWD
Cupra Born?
Having had an Essence for 6 mnths I agree that it is a bit overhyed by reviewers. The efficiency is dissappointing (I think that the difference between it and the Excite is due to its bigger wheels NOT the battery type). The seats could be more comfortable on long trips and the camera is very average, one of my biggest disappointments, especially at night when its almost useless. We wont mention the software!
We also have a 28kwh Ioniq, that we’ve had for over 4 years and honestly the Ioniq is better in a number of aspects.
Appreciate the honest owner’s perspective 🙏
However I should have said that the MG IS fun to drive, especially on a windy or unsealed road. Takes me back to my rally days.
That was the conclusion I reached when I compared it against the BYD Dolphin ⚖️

th-cam.com/video/gjubPYDkm50/w-d-xo.html
If this car you are loving it, why not buying it Tom !
If it came in LFP … I’d have to give it some serious consideration!
The fact is, You couldn't get away from Tesla mate.
Other brands of ev just selling for lose for market share though. Except BYD
Time for Elon to ship the smaller Tesla for this segment!
@@LudicrousFeed LFP = battery tech?
$2k more for a base Seal..... no brainer
Depends whether you want a Hatch or Sedan 🤷♂️
@@LudicrousFeed yes... 2 different class of vehicles... however, the LFP, interior appointment, build quality etc the Seal is clearly ahead of MG4 with such a small price difference.... maybe it's apple to orange but bang for buck EV, it's hard not to look at the Seal with that price though...
Agreed the Seal is very good value
MG should bring out a 51 Essence to be able to compete better against the Seal on the price point. Can understand why they haven’t though as it’ll cannibalise the 64 Essence
Agreed the Seal provides huge value for money. The feeling of quality I suspect would be in a different league.
is there a way to turn off that annoying voice assistant..?
Hmm I’ll have to play with it a bit more when I get the XPower loan
@@LudicrousFeed any luck..?
@@jai.shah007 Good news: “Hello MG” can be toggled On/Off
@@LudicrousFeed that's a relief 😅 thanks for checking.. 🙂
$900 to service an electric car, treating us like fools !
Yeah that’s not great is it
