  • The 2024 MG4 is here, and YOU NEED to BELIEVE THE HYPE!!
MG has done what Tesla simply couldn't - make a car for the masses. Considering the cheapest Tesla Model 3 you can buy in Australia is over $60,000, the MG4 at just $38,990 as tested takes the cake as the best value family electric car. So today, we're going to go for a full in-depth tour of the all-new MG MG4, and talk about why this EV is changing the automotive landscape forever...

I own an MG4 Trophy (premium) in Ireland. I'm generally happy with it. The physical experience is great and the hardware is great. The driving experience has been described as German and I agree with that - weighty, refined, precise. Putting the foot down and feeling it blast off is great. But what needs improvement is the software. The software is buggy and broken. Not so much it makes the car inoperable but broken enough it's annoying. Things like lane keeping assist freaking out on narrow roads, or day/night running confused by shadows, or android auto not working randomly. MG really need to start focusing on this stuff because it is important. As a developer myself I can see easy solutions to some of these issues but they're not being rolled out and the brand suffers.

Fully agree, I'm about to buy one and if it weren't for the software quirks I'd have gotten it already.. Come on - it should be trivial to remember settings between drives and LKA and EBS being so annoying to the point of being dangerous SHOULD have a default off setting

    • @matthew9076
      @matthew9076 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I've had my mg 4 for half year, and honestly the biggest problem is the software and the numerous bugs... The LKA is honestly dangerous, the Bluetooth I need to program every time. (Supposedly fixed with new software) but over the air updated is not activated and not working. The keyless access is not working, I can unlock the car with the app, but not drive it... The car itself is amazing, the software, and MG itself is horrible at actually listening to people and fixing it

A measure of this car's success is that within 6 weeks of coming onto the Australian market it's sold so many units it's in the top 10 of EV sales out of a field of 30+ models currently available. By the end of this year it could be in the top 5. And next year I think it will be second only to the Model Y, is my prediction. And it's way better than its price point competitors the base model Dolphin and Ora Cat, which are soon to be released (Ora Cat is already released I believe.)

They are cheap enough for normal people to be able to afford but the UK Government is now considering sticking a tariff on non EU built cars to stop people buying Chinese - What our government dont understand is 1. 4X probably has TOO much power for this chassis to handle. However MG will also release an extended range version with even larger battery, with a single more powerful 240 hp motor on the back. I reckon that will be the best version of the MG4. Longest range (550 plus km), still has RWD handling, and around 6 second 0-100 acceleration.

I test drove the Long Range 77 and it's a great car. It's only drawback is being expensive sub model. It's safe to say if you're tight on budget and still want brand new EV the Excite 51 is go for. Otherwise Essence 64 should suffice if you want a better model. Long Range 77 is only good if you really need that range and want big power.

    Right
Needed to get my thoughts down as I am really not sure people are comparing apples with apples
Really trying not to be a Tesla fan boy becuase I want the whole market competing on EV but we are just not there yet. (but almost)
Close, but I think the next 2 years might level the playing field unless Tesla have already gotten too much of a head start on
It seems seems like all the reviewers are desperate to love the MG4
And I actually like it and would probably go out an buy one tomorrow, but it would only be the entry level
And here are the reasons, I would really want to pony up to get the Tesla 3
    Features
Entry level MG only has 350km range vs Tesla 2 at 513km
The tesla has better tech , better charging options
Everything above base model MG4, has the older battery tech
Only the Tesla and the bottom of the range MG have lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery
LFP batteries are lighter, charge faster and are not as toxic as cobalt oxide or manganese oxide Lithium batteries
Note, the only drawback this battery has seems to be that they do not perform as well in the cold, but not a problem for me here Qld Australia.
No storage in the front under the bonnet for the MG
Less storage in the trunk for the MG
The safety features and software appear to be mor polished in the Tesla
    Resale
If the purpose is to be a shopping trolley and charge from home, and a longer warranty, I think the entry level MG is a really good option
But I work as a rep and it seems like the Tesla will be a no brainer based on the feature set.
I am just saying, by the time you get closer in a spec to spec comparison, the MG comes up a bit short
But I still like it :)
    Pricing
    MG Australia website
    EXCITE 51 FROM $41,197 359km
    Excite 64 FROM $47,317 450km
    Essence 64 FROM $50,377 435kmn
    Long Range 77 FROM $58,537 530km
    Tesla 3 from $61900 513km
    Charging
Superchargers can add up to 275 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes
It takes 38 minutes to charge the MG4 on a 150kW charger to get from 10% to 80%
So my point is, if you are going to charge from home all the time, it probably does not matter, but its worth knowing as everyone seems obsessed with how long they will have to wait while charging....
Its just hard to recommend the any MG except the entry level based on longer warranty and the initial purchase savings of the entry level model.
Does that mean its the great 2nd car argument based only on price?
    OK
So now it's time for everyone to attack me
Cmon haters.....(Remembering that I actually like the MG4)
    :)

The cheapest model 3 here in Oz is $66k b4 onroad costs. That model 3 is nearly double the price of this MG4 (that also uses LFP btw).
Note the long range Model 3 uses the older battery tech.
So... whats is the story here ? More $$$ = longer range ? Do people need a 560km range any how ? - that is more range than all of my cars.

    • @jeffcorkill68
      @jeffcorkill68 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@nordic5490 I think at the moment because of the lack of fast chargers, the MG4 range might be a problem on long drives as a Sales Rep is all. So at the moment if I thought I was going to do a lot of driving like that again, I would not buy either of them. Will be interesting to see how fast more chargers appear. I check google maps and there really don't seem to be enough yet like in Europe and California. Hopefully changing soon. If put on the spot right now I would probably buy the MG4, I just like the Tesla more but money talks

"In DC mode, the MG4 EV can take a maximum power output of 117 kW in the Standard version and 135 kW for the Long Range models. Whichever version you have, about 20 minutes is all you need to charge from 20 to 80% and therefore recover a range of 220 to 270 km (137 to 168 mi)."

How did you get on with the wide plastic door sill Ally ? One downside is there is no drivers side front grab handle although the phase 2 (2023 MY) which I hope yours is does have grab handles in the rear and a front passenger one. My disabled friend has shortish legs and couldnt get in and out with the wider sill (due to the battery width). I have one coming next week same as yours SE Standard range but as in this video Alpine / Dover White.

      Hi both,
I'm due to have my MG4 SE (base model) in the UK end of October, anyone knows if it is like the Australian base model (Excite I believe) in having:
      1. Rear camera.
      2. Rear wipers.
      3. Interior grab handles.
As they weren't in the 2023 base model, not sure if they added it in the 2024 models?

I was actually a little bit disappointed with it tbh. The interior feels much cheaper than the Ora, servicing is really expensive and to get a similar level of equipment as the Ora and BYD, the price starts to get close to 50k.
It does drive well, but everything else lets it down for me.
This is the one car I've really found my own opinion to be pretty contrary to the motoring press.

Front Hood doesn't line up flash with left side panel. Noticed this on several MG4s . No rear vent. Definitely built to a cost.

I'd take anything on the Geoff buys cars channel with a grain of salt. He's got something against ev's for whatever reason. Why captilise the 'made in china' bit? Sure they make some crap, but that's not what we are looking at here. You might be surprised at what some of the things you own or use that have Chinese parts in them.

@@wigs1098It isn't anything to do with Chinese parts. You have made in China at the request of a foreign company and those components are made to certain tolerances ( otherwise you move the contract elsewhere ). Then you have made in China for the domestic and local Asian markets. Quality isn't the same and that build quality is a big negative with MG. It's on the UK MG forum with the various problems that have affected the 4, 5 and EV SUV they make. There is a reason they can undercut the opposition. Quality is one
