I usually put a cloth in between but this is mine and its a rental, its best to dirty rentals up out of the box like paint them straight out thanks to thieves.
Don't use those crap packings.......you didn't grease the the interior groves of the packing and use the top packing nut to push the uppers into place and use the lower I take to push the lowers into place. Don't use a rubber hammer on the packings
Like I explained in the comment below you Com4, these are rentals, and customers put them thru hell, and good ol’ 10w30 oil is good enough, been using them packings for 20 yrs, the rubber mallet and the brass bushing is a safe and effective way for beginners to tackle this without damaging the block. Have Blessed day!
Great let see if I can do it
Nice video. But try not to scratch the block when its in the vice. Do some rubber between. Than its a 100% perfect job.

Where do you purchase your replacement parts from? Thanks
From Bedford or Warwick, or you can just google them there are several others online.
how long does a packing last you?
Depends on the material introduced, and if you strain it before hand, also how much you use it.
I just replaced my packing after 20 years of no issues, so roughly about that long
