- A compilation of 11 artifacts found this past fall in and around the middle TN area. There are a number of different types of artifacts throughout the video including dart points, blades, hammer stone, & lance points. As usual, the quality of some of these pieces leave me wondering how one could be made with such primitive tools. Feel free to comment on any and all artifacts you have input on. Haha welllll I wouldn’t call it the gravy train… if I could walk out and pick them up out of my front yard, now that would be the gravy train! I still gotta work for em. I did scoop some dirt out in a 10’x10’ area to level it out a little bit when constructing an outbuilding a few months ago. In that little section I scooped up dirt I find flakes every time it rains it seems like. I’m tempted to hook up the plow and tear up the whole yard! Haha

I'm up on the shores of Lake Superior. Huge native influence but everything sinks around here. My buddy did find a copper spear head and another friend found a really neat axe. I love these videos. Keeps me sane while I wait for the snow to melt. I hope to someday find a point. Have to play with agates until then. Thanks brother and have a blessed New Year.
Thanks man! There are for sure artifacts out there laying along the banks, just finding where they are is the hard part! If I was your buddy that found the copper point, I’d have my metal detector out there so fast! I hear ya on the snow though… luckily we typically get a whopping 4-10” of snow all winter. When it melts the runoff sure does expose the artifacts though!

I love the fossil in the middle of that serrated point almost looks like a Christmas tree 🎄 point
It always makes an artifact much more interesting when you have a cool fossil in it to top it off!

Thanks buddy! When you’re out there trying to find em as the waters dropping, you gotta do a lot of looking in the water to stay ahead of the game! The one at the end was preserved nicely in that squishy mud! Throw in a little gravel and all those serrations would’ve been goners! Haha

@@Points365 that precise four sided beveling and the basal configuration/the way the stem is made makes.me.think harpeth river I think personally. Doesn't.appear to have been notched like pine tree or stillwell we're, and considering harpeth rivers can be found with expanding stems like that , that's just my .02 , it's a fine one whatever it is. The thickness, beveling makes me wanna call it a harpeth.

@@Points365 I feel like a lot of folks will see the shoulders and think sharpened down pine or Stilwell, but that notching/the stem doesn't appear to have been done the way pines or Stillwell's were. Definately that four sided beveling too, don't see that on many pine trees, the overall thickness as well lines up with most harpeths I've seen or recovered myself too. That needle tip and the actual edgework itself are a bit different than the pines are I've found or handled. Such a killer man, thanks for always sharing your badass finds. You definately have your share of poignant moments out there! I don't doubt you for a second, I think you have a better idea about stuff you're finding than I ever will, gotta always give yourself some credit!
@@Points365 watching this again and the quality of that harpeth still makes my mouth water/makes me uneasy/want to get out and find one for me too haha I swear man I love that type. They're so uncommon and hard to come across but when you do find em they're incredibly well made

That last one was super gnarly. From now on, when I find an awesome broken tip, I'm going to imagine it looking like that point. Good eye on that one.
Haha man seriously! I let my imagination go buck wild with every broken one I find. Every broken tip I find is obviously from a double fluted Cumberland. And every broken base I find, I add about 6” to it when imagining what it looked like complete! Haha
Tennessee has some awesome history and beautiful artifacts. Great finds!

It would not grade as a G 10 the thickness is not uniform and it’s not perfectly symmetrical with a fine ear ding, but it is a fine point indeed!

Sweet finds brother! That 3rd one almost looks like granite, but I've never seen one made of it( too hard). The last one is just too sweet! Congrats and good luck!
It’s not that granite is too hard it’s not vitreous! You cannot flake or work granite like you can a quartz crystal, or chert nodule! I have some tools and a point made from Topaz that washed out of the Smoky Mountains into the piedmont region it has a hardness of eight and it is hard to work with but extremely vitreous! We have a similar Stone called granitic rhyolite it just cooled slower than glassy rhyolite and had time for the crystals to form when the lava was cooling! It’s a metavolcanic stone and usually contains some iron!
I think it’s called fossiliferous chert; basically chert made up from tiny fossils. Very cool material

It was a different array of materials this round from what it usually seems to be, which I’m totally cool with! It always makes an artifact more interesting when it’s made of some crazy material with fossils in it.

Man, thank you! I know I’ve got it good up here, and I try not to take it for granted. My sister lives in Columbia, SC and I hear about the lack of native artifacts from her! She stays in the creeks and has a nice collection of historic artifacts found. Not so much when it comes to native stuff though with the exception of a really nice bead that appears to be native. I appreciate y’all checking out the vids though man and good luck out there!

Thanks buddy! About the hard stone… I don’t think it is, but I’m not totally sure about that. I don’t see many hard stone artifacts around here so I’m not the best judge on that. That last one would’ve been a totally different story if it had been found in those rocks! I still have at least 3 more videos to put out before I’ve got all my video worthy finds for the year released. As far as how many for the year… geez I’m not sure if I could even make a good guess! As far as relatively unbroken artifacts for the year… I’d guesstimate 150ish. That’s just projectiles and blades. Broken points… like 3-400. So many heartbreakers! Haha

Lol on the surfboard comment! If I can’t find one of those I’d settle with walking upon an old dugout canoe! They have been found here along the waterways before. I’d have to build an addition to the house to display it if I found one! Haha Just a heads up.. my next video will have zero native artifacts in it. Weird… I know! It won’t be the new norm or anything. It will be nothing but these strange fossilized ribs and whatnot that I recently found all bunched together in this one spot. I figured I’d share a vid of it to get peoples input on it. I reached out to the geology / paleontology department at local universities to no avail. @@Points365 A happy New Year to you as well. Curiously, A guy my buddy knows found a dugout canoe in Bryant creek down in Missouri close to my buddy's property. It's on display in the Mansfield museum. We go down there point hunting twice a year on his land.
Snap base kind of fall hunting...
When you’re on em you’re on em I guess! Makes me wonder how money of them you find were really snap base, and how many were accidental breaks? I can think of a couple more snap bases I have found lately that are coming up in some of my upcoming videos, so the trend continued! Thanks for checking it out man!

Just noticed that broken based point with quartz vein in it.... is that iron pyrite in it? There actually might be microscopic gold in that quartz....it has been known that some points can have gold in them making them ultra rare and uultra valuable museum pieces
You know, I’m not really sure what kind of material that one piece is with the quartz in it. You definitely have me wanting to get my loupe out and looking it over real hard! Haha

In the east we call it a serrated Kirk!
@@artifacthunter1472 You would be correct. Stillwell, Pinetree, Lost lake and Serrated are all in the Kirk cluster.. I sometimes wonder if they weren't just different stages of use.

@@MOEMUGGY yes different nomadic tribes or groups had variations of the same or similar point during the same time, they were all used as projectiles to take down game and feed their families! The only thing I found different than the so-called archaeologists is their timeline, it’s not accurate! Every 3000 years was actually 1000!

The last point that you found is beautiful. I love the edge work. Would you call that a Harpeth River?
Thanks man! The edge work and fine flaking is impressive for sure. Harpeth river was my initial thought. A few people have mentioned stillwell or pine tree. But overall Harpeth river has gotten the most votes, so I’d say you are correct!

Net weights!! We find them in North Carolina made out of micah schist, some people call it soapstone but that’s not correct! Micah is what makes it feel like soap!
As he mentioned, net weights is the consensus on the mystery pieces! That’s what the majority of people thought, so I’m going with them on it. I bet I have close to 30 of them, all found off the same site. They were some netting sob’s! Haha

Thanks buddy! But man I haven’t a clue on that material. I’ve only found a handful of artifacts made out of it, and most of them are adze and hoes. I think I only have 2 projectiles made out of it. Ive got a couple.of greenbrier and one harpeth river point that share the similarity of yours on the side where they utilized curvature of the material initially and it has that sort of dished out area about midway down the blade toward the tip. I mean, plenty of points ive found have a sort of common approach but these haroeth river and greenbrier type has a very distinct methodology used to prosuce that result. Its cool to see that characteristic in many examples of the two types as i beleive they are directly related, the greenbrier and harpeth river type. The both share more characterstics than can be passed off as coincidence. Steep edge beveling on the aides of the hafting area/base where its commonly ground along the edges. The wide but not auper deep basal thinning os standout among them too, they had a unique approach at doing that, punch fluted. Many have those wide but shallow basal thinning strikes, essentially flutes for all intwnt andmourpose as far as im aware. The steep beveling forming the sides of the basal area is a standout feature ive noticed. Not unlike the ateeo four sided bevel done to the blades but done a bit differently than the blade edges.
