    A common mistake I've seen made on TH-cam reviews is that it's Nazis storming into that home at the beginning of this film. It's not the Nazis, it's the Italian Facists (who were also part of the Axis powers during World War II). For whatever reason, the filmmakers decided to make The Red Skull Italian instead of a German Nazi. I guess they were worried about offending Nazis? Who knows...?

    • @SUPERskrat1996
      @SUPERskrat1996 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well germany is of course very tight on nazi related media in their country. it's against the law to brandish any kind of nazi based material so they might have watered down a majority of the nazi symbols and such, and put in just enough nazism reference that german law would allow.

    • @Schnipah
      @Schnipah 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you say nazis, you think holocaust, you say italian fascists, you think spaghetti and meatballs. That is why you do italians instead of nazis.

    • @RealKull
      @RealKull 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      alexleinbach 1) Fascists were the model the Nazi party followed on its quest for power...the whole idea of the totalitarian ideology was born in Italy and only afterwards exported to Germany...Fascists killed a shitload of people too, go around in Italy saying that Fascists were a bunch of spaghetti loving jolly good fellows and chances are you'll be in for a beating (but probably being foreigner you'll only pass up as ignorant) 2) Probably the inclusion of Fascists as villains was done to please the Jugoslav authorities.

      +SUPERskrat1996 Germany is not tight on nazi related media. It´s true that the display of symbols like the "swastika" is forbidden but that does not mean it is forbidden to show them in e. g. movies, documentaries. Also why would this matter for this movie which was not done by Germans?

    I saw this movie back in 1992 here in Germany, when it hit videostores, and liked it to a certain degree, fully aware that it was not a good movie. Around this time I also came across the 'Flash'-TV show, and 'Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends' was on TV every saturday, so this Cap-movie did its part for me. Not in a lifetime would I have believed if someone told me that twenty plus years later we'd have a comicbook-/Superhero-dominated bonanza in cinemas. So even if not every adaptation is equally good, I do appreciate the effort. ;-D

  • @cynthiautz6702

    Which is weird because back then Marvel WASN'T really interested into making there OWN comic book movies back in the day... While both Superman (1978) and Batman (1989) were doing really well. Glad things have changed. Cause without this movie, we would not have an Iron Man movie or an Avengers movie.

      Superman 4 in 1987 put a damper on what should have been the Trend ... Batman 89 was a gamble up until release as no one knew how a 'dark' dark knight would play at the time (and the franchise quickly devolved)... beyond that there was the simple fact that Marvel got their asses kicked by over inflating the collector's Market for comic books... they were selling the Film rights off willy-nilly to keep the lights on... That is why this film was so low budget, the Lundgren Punisher film in 1989 looked like a rejected sequel to Death Wish as much as a 'comic book movie' and why the infamous Fantastic 4 from the era exists (the studio needed to produce something to keep the rights until they figured out what they were doing... similarly why the Hasselhoff Nick Fury, and Gen X (made for TV, poorly disguised Pilot,) movies were made in the mid 90s as well...
      That is why Blade in 1998 was itself seen more as a continuation of this era rather than the leader of the eventual revolution often cited as starting with X Men in 2000 and Raimi's Spider-Man in 2002
      you mention Hulk, who had a 5 season series and got 3 made for TV movies based on it (thinly veiled attempts at spinning of Thor & Daredevil) in 88,89, & 90 so for a lot of people he (and superheroes) were TV fodder... also looking at the budget issues that plagued movies about Cap, He-Man and Superman (# 4 was notorious for budget mandated edits) most people recognized the need for a proper budget, lest you end up with a TV grade production... who's going to Pay movie theater prices to see Peter Horton (idk?) turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger in green body paint if it has the same 'special effects' limits as TV Movie from less than 2 years ago

      Seriously you can be a fan of this movie but you are wrong this is a awful movie a abomination that deserves all the hate it gets. Captain America is highly absent in his damn movie, it's really not that exciting, the implausible asinine Captain America kicks a freakin rocket which alters where it goes how damn unbelievable, and also they made Captain America a awful character that you hate which is utterly unfaithful because he's similar to Superman a Likable Guy that is pure of heart Hero that cares about persons and has good manners.
      Also the Red Skull looks freakin pathetic, he's a damn Nazi they made him a Italian Facist for no damn reason other than because they can and because they don't care about being faithful so a lameass nonsensical unnecessary unintelligent change, no damn explanation how the hell his face altered to human which is awful writing, etc.
      This movie is a abomination a utter damn embarrassment with mostly no understanding of Captain America and a huge lack of damn effort which is primary reasons why it's a awful movie along with the low budget, and other flaws.

    Marvel didn't know how bad they screwed up their own product until the first Blade movie was made. That is when everything started going right. I think they only got 25k to allow the Blade franchise movie to be shot, from then on they created Marvel Studios to have full control of their characters.

    Loved this video. I tend to be a defender of Captain America 1990, because it ultimately saw the light of day with so many things stacked against it. I was lucky enough to see a bootleg of the director's workprint before the official release. It would never have been a blockbuster, but it was significantly better than the version that was left to history. While there were not too many scenes removed, many were slightly longer. However, there was a cut scene that explained how President Kimball would have known Sharon. Originally, they had a heartfelt conversation that added a lot to both characters. Certainly, they should have either let the scene in, or somehow edited the scene so that he doesn't address her by name before they (as far as anyone knew) met, but I don't think a lot of care was put into the revisions. Also, it didn't seem weird to me that Steve Rogers was seen smoking. He was a smoker in the comics until it was later (rightly) retconned.

    This film is not as terrible as some people say.Its not as awful as The spirit,Batman and Robin,and Superman 4.It was the first of its kind so its kinda special.I do love the 2 big budget Captain America movies especially Winter soldier which blew me away.It was a great experience in the theater.

    As bad as this film is, watching it when it came out, and as someone who had even then been a Marvel fan for thirty years, it was very gratifying that the makers were at least trying to stick to the legend as much as they could. The world was different then; superheroes didn't have the acceptability with a mass audience that they do now.
