    I really loved Langella's performance as Skeletor.

      Totally ! He was absolutely amazing. "Now - I- am Master of the Universe !!" // I read that Langella actually said it's his favorite role ever (that he played). Great classic

    That brings back memories. I didn't enter into the contest but I remember them running ads for it all the time. I'm going to have to look up and see if they ever officially picked a winner. Cool that they at least sent you something.

    Frank Langella was so amazing as Skeletor. One of the best villains ever. Seriously. So campy, yet so cool. Hats off to you, Mr. Langella.

      It's cool, too, that he has always taken pride in the role; he did it for his kids and has never put the movie down in interviews

    Not even a mention of the most important reason to watch this movie. Evilyn's arresting eyes. Meg Foster (has the most compelling eyes in Hollywood, okay Karen Black's eyes are also interesting) is super good in this film, and indeed, has some of the best lines. "I see only a human female, it must have been she who tipped the balance against you."

    It's funny Dolph Lundgren considers this his low point, when Frank Langella has said that this was his favorite role to play.

    • @hennessyapplejuice8331
      @hennessyapplejuice8331 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      How was that his low point it wasnt like he was a big moviestar or anything.He could barely speak english his biggest role to date was in Rocky IV and he only said 3 words.Im not sayin ur lying its just funny he would say that

      The only other thing that Langella is popularly known for is that Dracula movie of his.

    • @TJ52359
      @TJ52359 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      IIRC Langella expressly stated he did it for his Kids, combined with the Freedom to 'ham it up' made it one of the more 'Fun' jobs he ever had...
      as to Lundgren I think it might have been a case of teaching him that he should have better picked his roles... the fact that he was so new, and suddenly the lead, on a troubled production (over budget, no 2nd unit, studio meddling) he might have felt more of the stress at the time...
      - MotU was only his 3rd film... and if you look a lot of his work after that (save Maybe Punisher '89 and Showdown in Little Tokyo) he switched to either Villains or Direct to Video 'gun porn'

    In the most recent release of the film, both Frank Langella and Dolph Lundgren expressed their appreciation for the movie. One unfortunate thing is that Langella, who was in top shape at the time, pushed for a big fight scene to be included and he and Lundgren worked on it for awhile only to have it end up a much shorter fight to cut costs at the end of filming.

    I only know this because, despite growing up in the 80s, I just finished watching this movie for the first time today. Her parents were the only people in the plane. Her mom mentions everything will be fine because her dad is a good pilot. She also grabs maps along with his keys. One can assume he has a small two person plane. So no need to warn anyone else.

    Probably one of favorites growing up. At my local video store I remember the poster at my local video rental store with the review "The STAR WARS for the 80's !" Although I'm glad that sequel didn't go through looking at MacGruder there who would've replaced Lundgren. They also used sets from Cannon's never made SPIDER-MAN along with the never made MASTERS sequel to get CYBORG made. I had read elsewhere Lundgren was early at one point supposed to do the sequel. And co-star with Jean Claude Van Damn was also to have a role in the project to boot. The two were friends ,and had always wanted to collaborate on a project together. It never happened until UNIVERSAL SOLDIER though.

Little details like using music to open portals with the cosmic key, or the "food on little white sticks" and being disgusted that it used to be an animal (I'm not vegetarian, I just thought it was a cute reaction) made the movie for me.

    Interesting side fact, He-Man was inspired by Robert E. Howard's (creator of Conan the Barbarian fame) original barbarian hero Kull the Conqueror, this included both the main villain Skeletor who was based of Kull's somewhat re-occurring enemy (until he killed him anyhow) necromancer Thulsa Doom who's head like Skeletor was a skull (a version of this villain made it into the Conan the Barbarian movie played by James Earl Jones but sadly without the Skeletor skull-face :) ). They also drew on the idea of a previous snake people of the evil snake god Set that ruled the world prior to humans (or Eternians I guess in He-Man world) which can re-appear as a current threat (and constantly shown with Skeletor's base as Snake Mountain) particularly in the He-Man reboot series of the 2000's.
    Of course the He-Man series added the futuristic elements and was kid orientated unlike the pulp fiction Kull stories which had allot more violence and some nudity (though much less then the later Conan stories, Kull being written as a character who unlike his successor was uninterested in sex, but only battle, He was also somewhat more intellectually curious then Conan, but it was with the Conan stories that Howard really struck a cord with the pulp magazine audience).

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were in the same universe and time period. Conan also had Thulsa Doom for a villain, in the novels, and sometimes the comic zine.

    • @chaynebutler9572
      @chaynebutler9572 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Kull and Conan did share the same universe, but NOT the same time-period. Kull, an exile of Atlantis and king of Valusia, existed in a continent and kingdom that was at least a thousand years BEFORE the Hyborian world of Conan. Kull was one of Conan's predecessors and, as I recall from the original Robert E. Howard stories, was MENTIONED in Conan AND in one of the stories of Solomon Kane - AND he made an appearance in one of the stories of Bran Mak Morn. Thulsa Doom appeared in the Conan comics, from the old Marvel series of the 1980's, where he had served as an uneasy anti-hero ally to Conan and Red Sonja. In the original REH stories, he only appeared in ONE story of Kull - but, he DID have a skull-like face.

    Evil Lyn and Skeletor was the best thing about He-Man. Skeletor when he said No mine was the best when Evil Lyn said the world is now ours.

    My dad took me to see this in theaters when I was seven. We saw Superman IV right after (another good bad movie). I had such a crush on Courteney Cox.

    Interesting review. This movie is very under rated and have always loved it since seeing it in the 1987.
    There is another interesting movie called "Beast Master 2: Portal of time" that pretty much has the same plot as Masters of the Universe. Consider it the unauthorized knock off sequel. Perhaps you should consider reviewing it. It is so bad it is good.

    I love that movie. Yeah, some cheezy points, some issues - the "new" characters addressed quite logically towards the end - but overall I loved it.
    Of course the critics spat venom on it worse than poor Kobra Khan ever could...
    That, in case you weren't being sarcastic, was the action figure guy who got the "Red Shirt" treatment, he wasn't a new character but one of the "Serpent Men" - I had the figure, loved it. Spray gun head to squirt watery spray. After about a decade the spring wore out and couldn't replace it... Wasteful to red shirt him; he sprayed a venom that made people compliant, good strategic character for instead of a hit (in MOtU figure role-playing) that just lets the other character slug you back and most figures you sneak and try to take out are an order of power better than him so he'd lose you got an extra figure on your team - he's worth a "Prime" character if done right - pretty good for a 3rd rate character...
    I'd like to see "Rulers of the Omniverse" made into a movie!
    ---heh, anyone know what I'm reffin' ?
    Serious, anyone loved the old He-Man - might check out the graphic novel "Kapatara" about an astronaut who gets sucked into a universe seemingly inspired by this kind of toy line. And unlike the cliche hero out of water in Sword and Planet world he does NOT want to return home. Uh, he's Gay, but they don't make it gross or that blatant.

    Why did they have to go to earth? I mean we paid for Eternia.

    • @williamhiers5348

      Budget reasons, primarily; in fact, the budget was so low Gary Goddard literally had to pay to film the finale out of his own pocket because the studio refused to give him any more money.

    One thing I never noticed before, but did in this review, is that Man-at-Arms' costume, actually has a lot of its tradtional detailing in it but in black rather then his usual colors; making it look like a "stealth armor" version of the character.

    Interesting fact: In the early development stage, illustrator Ralph Mcquarrie , who made the legendary artwork that helped George Lucas sell Star Wars to the movie studio did a bunch of designs for vehicles and castles for the movie, none of which were used. They are available online. His designs for Grayskull were pretty sick!!!!!
