      Roids do the body good.
      I’m just not looking forward to his inevitable death ~52, from heart disease, as is normal from roid abusers.
      The human body just isn’t meant to be that large, and body builders can get the same heart damage as grossly obese people.

    i was a Corpsman with the Marines for 4 years. that's not an action movie staple...that's a marines staple. we once spent 2 hours waiting in a parking lot and took turns throwing rocks over vehicles at each other. The new guy showing up just before a battalion goes on leave happens all the time. new marines (boots) do stupid things all the time. no amount of training can change the fight or flight response. Other than that your criticisms are correct

      ***** It's not a fun job, it's not a good job, but it's a right job. Without the military protecting us, including you, even while you sit at your computer and criticize them, they risk their lives for you, so you can be free to do what you want to do. Don't take that for granted, and show some fucking respect. Semper Fidelis isn't just a motto, it's a lifestyle, it's a law, and it's a fucking privilege.

    The best thing about this movie to me is how Karl Urban manages to look like the Doom guy face at the bottom of the screen in the game. I swear he's doing exaggerated expressions to look more like the grimaces that game face makes as you take damage.

    Glad to see a level-headed review of a fun, passable sci-fi action flick. One of the biggest peeves I had with the film was that despite all the time the cast spent being trained by a member of the SAS, in order to improve their soldier image, something as basic (and critical) as muzzle awareness was ommitted from their performance. That, and a few other quirks aside, the film was pretty good. I still wish the film took a more "Event Horizon" approach instead of "Resident Evil at Mars."

  • @SmashTom
    @SmashTom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's kinda funny that I really like this movie but none of my friends do. We've all played Doom games (some more than others), so that can't be the reason.
    There's still a lot of wasted potential (like leaving out Hell, as you already said), but it's still entertaining. The characters are likable (to an extent), the story is fairly good for a movie like this and the effects are great. And yeah, that FPS segment nailed it 100%. I really like this movie and it's a shame not many share my opinion...

  • @KenChanNoodleStream
    @KenChanNoodleStream 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Honestly, my opinion, this is one of my all time favorite films. I was a little disappointed because they removed the Hell theme but it didn't ruin the movie for me. First half is a successful Horror/suspense/ thriller, while the second half (or perhaps last quarter) is a successful Action film. The dialogue is funny, the characters, I thought, were all *cliched* but pulled off nicely and enjoyable. Specifically, Portman. His douchebaggy attitude and perverted humor made him a fun character to watch. I find this review very accurate and very honest. People are all entitled to their own opinion, and can love it like others, including me, do, or hate it, like others do. Lastly, even though this film didn't have the Hell story they did make many mentions to it. Reaper: "We have to face our demons sometime." Bottom of the helicopter in the beginning, "R.R.T.S Hellfighters." Goat was a devout Christian character, and even in one scene Portman says, "There is a God." But only because he saw tits.

    I have a love hate relationship with this film. As a videogame adaptation, its terrible but if you look at it as just an action sci fi film, its great. I had a blast watching this movie in the theaters. Could it have been better? Of course, but its not nearly as horrible as people say it is

    I totally agree on the removal of Hell spoiling the film. The whole fact that it was demons in the games is what made it so interesting. Turning it into so weird virus just made it Resident Evil in space or at best a re-tread of 'Ghosts of mars'. Doom really should have been Evil Dead meets Aliens.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main thing they did wrong was the demon thing.
    I remember how angry I got when the headlines told us this when this movie game first came out.
    IT WAS IN AN EARLY DRAFT. They removed it because they were cowards and scared of hurting someone's feelings. I guess religious zealots.
    Wait...the rock KEPT the BFGs???
    I love the Rock more now...

      +Vuyisile Sibeko Exactly... 07:46 sums it up.. Where is the Hell story.. the demons.. How they found the tapastry stones on mars thar explained how humanity sealed down the portals ( a hero figure involved ) and escaped to earth.. ( This is actually told in doom3 game before getting to the marsian dig site ) anyhow.. I'm so fckin pissed off how they fck up a decent concept and a story.. they sure will fck up the upcoming Warcraft movie too.. damn..

    I was in high school when the Doom movie was in development hell (I graduated in the year 2000), and I remember having a discussion with a friend of mine about this film, to which he said, "It would be stupid if the Doom movie was just an FPS film, like in the game." Fast-forward to 2005, and they did exactly that. Likewise for Hardcore Henry. I also remember being disappointed because I was a fan of the '95-'96 Pocket Book series, and was hoping the film would be based on the first novel. Now that Doom 2016 is here, I can say we have a more satisfying Doom story than what could have been captured on film.

    I never understood why this movie gets such bad rep. I think its a good movie. The characters have good chemistry. Well acted, good special effects and while its not a very deep thought provoking film, i like its simple approach. The cohesion of the team. The premise behind the story, human experimention gone wrong but that the reason it happens was because they had like an evil gene or were predisposed to evil turns you into a monster is a cool premise. Portmans humor is good too.
    Monster designs are kind meh but what always stays with me and the highlight of the film is the Rock's performance and the actor playing Reaper giving a very serious almost stoic no nonsense personality. The best parts were by far the first person shootout sections, the Rock's character slow descent into madness and evil and the badass fight of the searge vs reaper.

    The POV level clearing shot really was the best part of this movie, and saved the entire movie from being deleted from my memory. If they'd tried a bit harder, or a bit less hard, and had started with a really polished script, but kept that POV sequence, this movie really could have been something. But that's true of all bad movies. Still....that POV sequence though...

    Just watched the film and then saw this. I totally agree that it's a real shame that they didn't go with the original Hell storyline and there's no epic battle with the Cyberdemon, although it was good that some of the other monsters appeared being the Imp, the Hell Knight and of course the Pinky Demon. Overall despite not being quite like the games, I actually found it to be quite entertaining, Doom is definitely one of those "It's so bad it's good" movies.

      RocketeerRaccoon it could have been much better but it definitely wasn't bad. I hope that one day they do just a faithful adaptation and have 1 soldier on Mars vs helldemons. That would be fantastic.

    • @RocketeerRaccoon
      @RocketeerRaccoon 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      GoodBadFlicks Yep, I agree too that Doom deserves a proper faithful adaptation. It's got to have a much greater budget, a solid cast, a very well written story and script and most importantly an experienced director. This bad video game to movies thing has really got to stop, it's not good that this genre of movies has gain a nasty reputation, it's because of scum directors like Uwe Boll that ruin everything. As long as a movie is in the right hands then we can have gold rather than an overwhelming amounts of films that are junk.

      I think you missed the point that it was based off the games, just happened to be based off Doom 3, which came out around the same time. Everything is the same, down to the Mars base, the company involved in colonizing mars, and even the guns.
      People say it's not based on the games because it's not based on the first two. But it is very accurate to the third game. Can't blame them for tying it into the most recent adaption.

    Finally, someone else but me that doesn't think this movie is complete dog shit. Honestly the biggest problem with this movie is the fact that it's an adaptation. If this movie was just a sci-fi action/horror set on mars, I really think that it would have been much more well received. But when you make an adaptation, fans of the original source material go in expecting a lot, and in my opinion, that's what really hurt this movie.

    I think that Event Horizon is a better "Doom" film than this, heck, it even got the "hell on space" part right, but yeah, beyond that, I absolutely agree that the first person part was fantastic, especially with the Pinky section (notwithstanding massive plot holes), and to my understanding, the "good guy turns into a super soldier" part, and this is entirely a guess on my part, maybe was an analogy to the "invencibility" item from Doom that turns your eyes yellow, also known as "IDDQD". Or maybe the film just pulled that right out of it's arse to revive Reaper with a MacGuffin.

    Funny how when I watch the movie I didn't believe the part about you have to be bad to turn to a monster because to me the sergeant had a valid point. It was too risky to let the contagion spread to the populous and they had no way to tell who was or was not infected.

    This was an unnecessary masterpiece of a film. I don't think many people were clammering for a "Doom" movie. But this really made me wanna see more. I love the cast and pretty much everything about it. Problem is though. The source material was never film worthy for it's lack of story. I think this was a good base though and i'm surprised of how close there were to the games. The loyalty is absolutely commendable. Just don't understand why Dwayne hates the movie now. Many people criticized the flick and said it was a dumb film. But i think those people aren't even fan of the games and are just ignorant to the fact that this movie was made for the fans. "Doom", "Silent hill", "Mortal Kombat" and the first 2 "Resident Evil" films. Are what video game movies should be like.

    Near the end when sarge and reaper or whoever are fighting, there was a second where sarge jumps up over some railing and you can clearly see his bungie harness clear as day, no shaky cam or nothing just full frame Dwayne Johnson strapped between some bungie cords. It looked hilarious. They must have edited that part out for the dvd release because I hadn't seen it since.

    If they based some of the action and the main character on the Doom comic, I think this movie would have been more funny than anything.
    "You are huge! You must have huge guts!"
    "I'm probably radioactive now! That can't be good!"
    Unveiling the BFG 9000 was also something they did wrong. They should have saved it for last and made it do more than jack all. Like in the comic, Karl Urban should have picked it up and been moved to tears by finding such a thing of beauty. :B

    They did EVERYTHING wrong:
    -the whole point on every doom ghame is that all the squad gets killed but the protagonist was left behind, so he was ok, hell, in Doom 3 there is no squad other than bravo, that its just a convinient plot point to advance the story until they get killed
    -with the exception of the pinky (which is based on the doom 3 design) all the monsters looked like generic monsters or zombies, even the atempted hellknight looks like a bigger version of the other monsters.
    -why are they aliens? in doom 3 they explain that they thought they were an extinct civilization, but its to a virus what makes monsters apear, the zombies are possed people (the zombie guards can even use guns and riot shields) and the imps (the monster that carmack was supposed to be) along with the rest of the monsters are clearly demons that get spawned from hell.
    -why did the base had no gurds or police or some shit, like in D3, its private company after all, not gouverment project or something.
    -why the fuck do guns talk, in D3 some of them had little screens that showed how many bullets you had left, like in aliens.
    -a lot of things were never fully explained, like you sayed
    -were the fuck is the shotgun, the iconic fucking shotgun and why does the bfg looks and functions like a plasma gun
    -how the fuck does the virus work?
    -for the love of god, those sets look so bland.
    sorry but i just hate this movie, not even the unrated cut had a lot different, hell they didnt even got the logo right, which without the blue and yellow looks just as bland as the sets.
    thank you for making this great review anyways.

    The FPS scene is so well done but I never understood why the monsters didn't come from Hell, The idea of the portal was that it opened the gateway to Hell itself, But in this just to Mars, And I found it strange why people changed into monsters like the IMP through a virus and it would determined what you would changed into, either good or bad..
    I wish they just kept to the story that was set in the franchise, The story was weak and the Rock looked ridiculous once he changed into the evil sarge

    they should've made the whole movie a hardcore action movie, sure DOOM is kind-of scary with the whole hell thing, but when it came to DOOM 3, the biggest problem people had with it was it focused too much on the horror element, DOOM is an action thing no matter what the medium and should be treated that way, when in comes to movies don't ditch the story line, (and this goes against any other movie) but DOOM should always be about the action period. That's a reason why movies based on games almost never work, or are hard to pull off, DOOM is a power fantasy, and the only time it can convey that is with the controller in your hand, they cant use it in a movie like this!
