Alias Billy the Kid: The Case for Brushy Bill Roberts

  • Was Brushy Bill just an old fraud that was disproven long ago? Not according to evidence. The University of New Mexico press said that Alias Billy the Kid was "the product of honest research". The co-writer of the book was a distinguished professor with a PhD from Harvard. Another famous supporter of the book was President Harry S. Truman. The research of Mr. Morrison was recognized as an academic work by these people and more, so why do critics continue to mischaracterize the story incorrectly?

That photograph you showed at the end always blows me away. The way Brushy stands its identical to the Tin Type of the kid.The way he holds his head the kind of offset lobsided way his body naturally holds it's self.I think your doing solid work and i do think your winning hearts and minds.

Holy , Freaking Smokes! Where the heck did that last pic in this video come from? I am totally blown away. My grandpa who was 5’4 wore his hat like that because it made him taller. I love the hat. I love the stance and the shoulder droop, the gait and the “head cocked “ and general appearance. It’s also amazing to me that he also ties his neck bandana in the same way every time. I noted too in another Brushy photo that the sweater texture is in the same pattern as the old tintype. What a lot of folks don’t know about the tintype is it was about 2 and 3/4 inches wide by 3 and half inches tall, very small and had been messed with by those who tried to alter it. Federal Charge but thrown out…..amazing that Brushy again told the true story that was found out later to be true blue. It’d be interesting to learn more about that getaway gun fight that night , where he was injured in the moonlight. Wonder if more could be found out about that? The more i find out the more I am inclined to agree with the President that Brushy Bill was not treated fairly. If I had been him, I’d definitely been afraid to meet and with policemen and Pat Garrett’s kin and any mockery taking place. Anyway thanks for the great video and approach to the subject at hand. I also did not realize the Author’s credentials. Excellent video.Thank you.

Looking back, I find it almost funny that, as of about a month ago, I knew nothing of any of this.
For me, it began on a rainy day where I decided to give a re-watch of both Young Guns movies, of which I hadn’t seen either in over a decade. When I came to the second film, I thought the tale of the old man coming out of the desert to claim he was Billy the Kid was nothing more than a fiction created to set the stage for a film sequel.
I watched both, which led me to Wikipedia, which led me to TH-cam. I’ve been on this amazing journey of discovery and have lost track of how many videos and interviews and documentaries I’ve watched or listened to since that rainy day.
My mind is blown. Thank you for being part of this journey.

I think Brushy was Billy I feel if someone after fame or to con others there would have motive behind it normally $ However the only motive here was to leave this world with a clean slate. Would have been so easy back then to start over. I think its easy for many to pick things a part they really haven't taken the time to research for themselves when you do everything paints a much different picture and starts to come together .

I'm almost fully onboard with Brushy being BTK because of the overwhelming evidence. There is one thing that is holding me back, and maybe someone here can help me reconcile this one thing. When BTK was supposedly killed in Ft. Sumner, and Garrett passed the dead man off as BTK, then Brushy said he came out and fired at Garrett and his deputies, but was shot 3 times himself. I can understand if the locals that saw BTK's dead body and the town folks that were on the coroners jury, lied and said it was BTK, because he was well liked and they wanted him to get away. But at some point, someone would have talked to their kids, grand kids, to other friends. In a small town gossip like this runs thru the town like wildfire, everyone would have known that Garrett shot the wrong man and was passing it off as BTK. But no one in the town ever talked that I know of. Not to mention no one talked about Brushy's version about there being a gunfight, and him being wounded 3 times. 50 to 70 years later, someone (many ppl in my opinion) would have talked about it. This is what's hanging me up. I know Pat Garrett's daughter said that her father didn't kill BTK, but Is that just her own opinion? We know from his book that he is a liar, but maybe she knew he was a liar and didn't trust anything he said, so she said that her father didn't kill BTK without qualifying it.

That shootout has always been a question for me also. While there are corroborations for certain aspects of his story like the body was on the porch and it was a moonlit night he seems to be the only one talking about the shootout and we have to be honest about that. He pointed to scars as evidence it happened but that doesnt mean he was being honest. As with a lot of things, Im willing to wait and see. The more info that comes out the more it seems to back up his version of events but nothing yet on this. If Im rationalizing I could say there was a dance that night and back then people would fire off guns to celebrate. Maybe they didnt really hear it as a gun battle? Dunno, like I said thats rationalizing.

@@aliasbillythekid Bob Boze Bell was quoting another westerner who said "It takes two Easterners to believe one Westerner". BTK was probably no different and could have added some flourishes to the story, like his shootout. He wouldn't have wanted to look like a coward and just ran away. But there I go, rationalizing...lol.

Hey Dan has anyone ever thought to go back to the very beginning of what started all this? Track down "Joe hines'?
If morrison did probate work, for this gentleman over a land dispute surely their exists signed documents that would show where this land was and where he could be reached. Which could lead us to his descendants. Obviously he's no longer living, but he clearly had family. hence him trying to get land back at the time.
Maybe he kept a journal or Old photos. If he is the one that set morrison down the rabbit hole that some of the regulators were still alive, then he must of met up with them at some point or else how would he know to imply that Billy had survived.
I have always wondered why there isn't more to this Joe Hines character.
I would definitely spend time and resources and look into this. This guy is basically started the whole thing with Billy Surviving and living inconspicuously under an alias and we have nothing on him no photos, no documents I mean I don't buy it, there has to be photos of this guy something has to exist, and if he really was Jesse Evans. there could be a literal treasure trove of materials just waiting to be dug out. Photos , records, journals, old weapons, clothes etc.
This is of course if you haven't already tried this route and were unable to find anything.
The story goes, as I know you are aware this joe Hines character meets up with a probate lawyer, to help get land back over a will, something akin to that, and they bond and he shares with morrison that some of the regulators are still alive but he won't tell him where. This sends Morrison on an adventure and down a rabbit hole to find out.
If the story is true, and I believe it is, and this guy is Jesse Evans, then at some point prior to meeting with Morrison, he met up with the surviving regulators AKA Brushy Bill and had a stroll down memory lane, otherwise how else would he be able to make these suggestions and tell morrison.
LIke I said, I am not sure if there has been any real digging on this Joe Hines character, but if you and Brett can dig up some super awesome rare tidbits of brushy, perhaps with maybe some financial backing from Mr. Estevez, you could make a documentary about finding Joe Hines. Maybe a 2 hours documentary or even a mini-series, where you could have 1-2 hour episodes dedicated to investigating certain people/era's. Would be a great way to drum up interest for Young Guns 3.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I've been after Joe Hines for a long long time. I have some info on him. He lived with another family at one point as a border, I believe. Morrison believes he was Jesse Evans so that's where that comes from. I believe Hines sent Morrison to J. Frank Dalton who outed Brushy. This is something I'll continue to dig for.

Hi Eddie. You have to understand that unethical people use those soundbites like "his own family said..." when it really wasn't his own family. There was one niece of Ollie that wrote one letter. The niece was much younger and only knew him as her uncle because he had assumed the identity way earlier. She looked in the family bible and saw Ollie was born in 1879 so she said "oh, then he couldn't have been Billy the Kid." These were not NASA scientists and it doesn't sound like she was too bright. All it proves is that Brushy successfully fooled her into thinking he was her uncle. On the other hand, Ollie's brother in law, who was closer in age, said to his wife, Ollie's sister "that's not your brother." So, one distant niece doesn't make a "family." but they push that line as far as they can because they have nothing else. thanks for the comment.
