The irony really is that Louis is actually more masculine than Tate. He’s confident, self aware and successful with excellent social skills. He’s also humble and has achieved a level of mastery in his field. All while being genuine and not having to be manipulative

As a therapist I have always thought Louis Theroux would make an excellent therapist. His ability to sit with people who often might hold ‘contemptible views’ and listen to them in a neutral way whilst remaining genuine is quite a skill.

"Austentatious humility is its own poison" is such a good bit of introspection from Louis. There are people who definitely use the "I'm not like other rich people" statement as a way to make themselves feel special. Then there are others who genuinely don't care. I imagine that Louis is the latter, but it must be a bit of a tightrope once you become aware of it.

It's usually guys who took a longer time to get rich.
I picked up on that. The ego can work on both ends of any spectrum. Similar to people who have the moral high ground on everyone else. It's not good being a bad person. But it's also not good telling everybody how much of a good person you are either. Egoism at its finest. One of the things I love about Louis is that he is very conscious and happy to be self-critical.

You guys all realise he was best mates with Jimmy Savile and had to do a documentary on himself just to try to look impassive.... THAT'S why he's parted from BBC.
Difference is Louis likes to watch but Tate likes to be watched. Louis is an anthropologist, like a hunter in a hide, he wants to blend in and observe humans behaving without consideration for his presence. This is a more substantial way to go through life. If you always demand the room to notice you and respond to you then every room becomes the same. You live in a bubble and become more and more locked away in your ivory tower. Someone curious like Louis would HATE that reality. To observe others you need them to forget you are there.

I love Louis. But most people wouldn’t want be around the disturbing people and groups he interviews. So yours is not a fair analogy.
It’s not like he’s just someone observing people from a park bench or in the corner of a room at an average function.
Louis is probably the one person I would trust to make a genuinely balanced and fair documentary about the Tate brothers. His super skill is not usually in using snaky journalistic tactics of trying to trap or trick interviewees...but rather in asking them the best questions to reveal that person's genuine true self. A very rare skill indeed.

Sadly, Louis has become very one sided politically and culturally and these perspectives have increasingly been on public display over the years. He has very middle-class views that are representative of the wealthy bubble he lives in. Very progressive, pro-censorship, pro status-quo. I love this man. Very intelligent, humble, and spot on. I listened to Andrew Tate to make up my own mind and it didn’t take long at all for me to be absolutely repulsed. He is indeed very arrogant and materialistic with no depth to his personality and a total turn off. Not to mention his terrible views on women which just makes me sad for him more than anything.
Except he's not. That's the catch. Women claim they are turned off by him, but in reality you are biologically wired to be into him. It's easy to say you're not into him (because he calls women out regularly), when there's no chance of being with him. But if he was in your town and showed interest, you'd very quickly invent ways to justify why you're into him.
He's brash and arrogant. He boasts about material possessions such as cars. A lot is tongue in cheek, but a lot is real arrogance. Women are into that. Women will bypass all sort of things because deep down they are biologically wired to be attracted to dominant men. That's the biggest message we can get from him. Women get mad at him, but that's what they are attracted to.
In this modern crisis when men are becoming more feminine, and women are becoming more masculine, he does more good than bad. If we strip down the cars, bravado, and bullshit, he has some solid messages, but more important is the unintended message he provides.

You should read 'In Plain Sight: The Life and Lies of Jimmy Saville' by Dan Davis.
The original hardback is a doorstopper, weighing in at least my or so. But utter fascinating.
The man who wrote it didn't spend a few weeks with him, but more like over a year. And this is the scary part: Dan isn't exactly a chump, either.
But here's the thing about genuine psychopathy, or, as the DSM-V describes it, Antisocial Personality Disorder: they tightly wrap themselves within multiple layers, to the point all you see is what they want you to see.
In Saville's case, as described in the book, he could fool almost everyone as this charming, affable, avuncular, eccentric, personality. Heck, for some reason I can't recall, but which is covered in that book, he was buried with a Green Beret, as the Royal Marines made him a Honorary Commando. A maternal cousin of mine was an actual Enlisted Commando himself, and one of the smartest people I know. How the hell did Saville pass the sniff test on that one, nobody knows.
Then there's the whole Broadmore thing, where he was practically given the keys to the entire hospital. As you very well know, that place is filled to the rooftops with the most mentally ill, and dangerous people, in England, if not the whole of the UK. Yet, he was given free lodgings there by some of the foremost Forensic Psychologists, and Psychiatrists in the nation.
My point being is that Saville built such an elaborate façade, behind which lay a pathological liar, to the point that Dan, after Saville's death, had to do a complete re-evaluation of not only all his interview notes, but spends a considerable amount of time into _really_ digging into that man's past, only to discover a labyrinth of mirrors, some more distorted than others, and some dark mirrors, which reflected little light at all.
But, as Dan writes, the truly worse thing was the construct that Jimmy Saville built around himself was almost so air-tight, that he fooled an entire nation as this eccentric guy, that everyone loved, because of his extrovert personality.
I myself have seen that on a personal scale. My dad was, in his lifetime, not only a respected driver on the District Line, but, later, a postman whom helped, in little ways, the elderly people on his route. He even developed a casual acquaintance with William Woollard.
What no-one would ever expect was he began sexually abusing my younger, severely disabled, sister and I, when I was 14; once a fortnight for years. And he was violent with it ...
But he wasn't the real monster. That was was our mum, whom not only gaslight me into pretending it wasn't happening, but fooled everyone around her as being this loving parent, especially of a disabled child. But behind the front door, she was everything but. I felt like I was raising my sister more than she was in ways that no 15yr old had had to with any younger sister.
When I told my therapist what I had to do for my sister - which I will spare you the details - she was shocked, and angry for me. In her 30+ years of clinical experience, she has never heard a more dysfunctional person than my mum. So when, finally, dad was given a nine year prison sentence, my therapist said my mum should've recieved at least half of that, for what she didn't do, as much as what she did do. And yet, in the church she belonged to, she was held up as this suffering person ... who would visit my dad on a regular basis, whilst still locked up ... those same church Elders would also take me to see him, too, despite knowing full well what he had done ...
Hence that book resonated with me, as I know what evil in disguise looks like ...
I don't blame Louis one bit. For if my dad and mum where able to fool people close to them of their true nature, then Saville easily got away with deceiving an entire nation, except for whom I suspect knows child sexual abuse on a personal level ...
... for even after my mum's death, her side of her family has disowned me ... for just telling the truth, and shattering their hagiography of her, which they still believe to be true. No apologies ... just set adrift. And, now that my dad is also dead, I have scant support from even my aunt, his younger sister, and nothing from his older brother ...
Insight into evil, which few genuinely have, without experience, find it hard to understand those whom do. In my case, I'm 48, and aside from my physical disabilities, those seven years of physical and sexual abuse has left me a pretty broken man that is only now able to rebuild something out of ruins, abet I will never be employable again ...
In short, both Louis and Dan where deceived by an evil that neither could possibly understand as it went far beyond what the human mind can conceptually perceive ...
... but only those touched by it, can. In my case, my insight has come with a cost far too high to pay back ...

Most British parents were dying to get their kids to meet old Jimmy for a Jim'll fix it medal. Theroux' interview was the first time many actually noticed Saville was a bit odd as Theroux's disarming style enabled someone who was incredibly good at hiding his dark side to show it for moments. I remember watching it and thinking, my god this guy is actually mental.
In hindsight, obviously _everyone_ knew he was a wrong ' un all along.
In reality, almost no one did at the time apart from his victims and some people close to him. Saville was very skilled at deceiving people.
Because Louis is the the way he is, it makes me trust him more. He has nothing to promote, no agenda, he just wants to impart information to others. I love how simple his life is, just very normal and the lack of flash makes him more reliable to us ordinary folks

Louis Theroux has to be one of the most important reporters/social commentators of our era.
Having watched his docs for what must be over 20 years ( ie : Eugene N. Terre Blanche) one had always thought that his method of interviewing was disingenuous and somewhat cynical, whilst effectively outing ne’er do wells .
Listening to him being interviewed actually establishes his wonderful fascination with people,his lack of judging offensive characters (even though he points us in the right direction) and leaves us grateful of his genuine character .
I am so happy that this slightly eccentric and non-mainstream journalist is out there for all of us.
I also thought that his interviewer , Steven Bartlett was superb .A rising star I hope.
Such a pleasure to listen to an interview where people listen to each other.
Have an intelligent point to put across.
And aren’t swamped by their own egos.

I love that even in his most awkward and goofiness, Louis is not afraid to be himself and embrace who he is instead of building a wall of masquerades around him to project something he is not. Nobody is perfect, we all are flawed....and very different, but the closest we can come to reaching some kind of nirvana through authenticity is just by being who we want to be, and finding happiness in that mold

I can’t help but feel that Louis inner confidence is, in part, enabled by his background of immense privilege which has imparted a foundation of self assurance and security. Still a deeply admirable outlook though.

It’s great that Louis is so in tune with who he is as a journalist. Like what he said about interviewing politicians is so accurate. When people interview politicians they’re interviewing someone who keeps their cards close to their chest, so they’re always looking for that “gotcha!” Moment. Which is fair, because we want to know what the politicians are really thinking. But with Louis who just wants to asks questions and understand, that lends itself to the radicals with loud views very easily
I've watched videos of Tate boasting about how he has scammed thousands of men out of millions of dollars. He is no more than a bottom feeding scumbag that deserves the prison time hopefully coming his way. Louis Thereoux on the other hand is a model on integrity. A real man.
This is what interviews are really about, beautiful articulation on both sides.
I bought my Casio wristwatch at a store in Port Moresby in September 1983. The strap was useless, but I found a way round that by using a rucksack strap. As of January 2023, both are doing fine.

Despite his views of flashy wealth he still managed to inspire me to continue starting my own business for the benefits beyond just money... A sense of building something, a creative outlet and growth through challenge. Great watch.

Louis has no perspective on life, he was born into money. Its how he was able to be a journalist almost all of them are trust fund kids. The tate brothers didn't have that, Tristan was stacking shelves in a Luton boots shop 10 years ago. I'd say the tate brothers are more grounded as they have actually lived and struggled in life.

Louis is from a wealthy background and was privately educated at a school where half of the students end up at Oxford or Cambridge. When you come from this kind of background, I think you’re less likely to strive for material possessions for the purpose of showing them off than if you’ve grown up poor. It’s unlikely to impress your peers that are also wealthy. More likely to have academic goals or seek power in one way or another.

My watch has also been self repaired for about 4 years and I don't care as it tells the time and is fine - apart from the strap that I've mended with a mini hairband. Totally with you Louis
My wife bought me a new watch for my birthday in November - a Casio. I'd worn my previous one - a Citizen - for 26 years and replaced the strap multiple times. Just like Louis, I don't need or want flash things.
I stopped wearing a watch years ago, when mine broke. There are so many clocks around (on the radio, appliances, in public and on the shattered screen of my mobile phone) that I found I didn't even need one attached to me anymore.
Theroux would be fantastic interviewing one of the Royal Family. That would be a breath of fresh air and just like the William walks podcast it would amazing! Still waiting for the Palace to release that one on TH-cam.

My husband & I run 2 businesses, one in food & the other in maintenance-We don’t own a flashy car or expensive jewelry either. I’m wearing the same ring 💍 he proposed to me with 10yrs ago. And I love it. We bought a new home but it’s a cozy rancher with some surrounding land. Not a mansion. IMO, anyone who feels the need to fill their lives with materialistic things, doesn’t know the value of love, friendship, family or happiness. Things don’t fill the void, a good happy life does👍🏼🫶🏼

It’s to some extent a pretty good analogy though. Take the pandemic for example, with how the media censored one side of the argument to do with vaccines, lockdowns etc they created a false reality around the world. Andrews niche is he refers to this false reality as the matrix because if you have seen the film it makes sense.

I think a real, balanced man has both some of the properties of Andrew and Louis. I'm very sorry to hurt some readers, but a man that can't fight misses a very important part of manhood, same for not being able to fix things. @@bruiladebeen5671 physical fights in life are rare, most fights are mental and require self-confidence and mental toughness. Being physically strong, while nice, is actually (for most people) not near the top of the list of desirable characteristics for a partner
...further to that, a LOT of men compensate for lack of confidence / bad personality with physical strength which is *very* unattractive
@@mysteriousbusiness Although physical fights are rare, the situations where it might happen aren't, especially for weak looking men. In night life or specific neighbourhoods there's always a risk of ending up in a fight or being robbed. And yes, being mentally strong will prevent most fights, but being physically as well will keep you and your friends/partner out of fear. I didn't say it's in the top list for desirable characteristics for a partner, but know from experience that is surely does for sexual attraction. There's overlap in desirable characteristics and being strong fits the characteristics of the ideal man. I'm not bashing weak men, just trying to stimulate health and strength.
