  • When people survive a stroke, they can come out the other side quite changed.
    They might see things around them differently, or there might be changes in how they interact with others. Sometimes stroke can leave the people closest to us almost like strangers.
    One of the ways scientists try to understand how our brains work is by looking at how we change when our brains are damaged, like they are after a stroke.
    This is a mystery that preoccupies Dr Margaret Moore, a researcher at the University of Queensland.
    Margaret is currently investigating how our brain's expectations of reality shape the way we experience it, in what she calls a kind of 'predictive texting' of the mind.
    Her research hit particularly close to home during her PhD studies, when her father had a stroke in his 50s.
