The biggest argument that I get into about "Salvation by Grace vs. Works" is on the subject of Baptism. My stance has always been that we get baptized not to get saved but because we are saved. If we have to be baptized in order to be saved then salvation becomes "by works" not by "grace".

The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 3:21)
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Heb 5:9)

@@MrKev1664 Peter is saying that the ANSWER of a good conscience toward God is ultimately BY the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They were saved by water in the sense that these eight souls had FAITH in God's plan for them PRE-CHRIST (This is also HOW Abraham was considered RIGHTEOUS PRE-CHRIST). THAT is how they were "saved by water". Baptism is a TYPE of resurrection, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the ANSWER of a good conscience toward God BY the resurrection of His Messiah. Baptism IS obedience to the author of eternal salvation POINTING to Jesus' resurrection from death, because THIS POINT is essential to the true WAY (the resurrection and faith in such) of how men are saved BY God which manifests AS faith in the TRUE gospel concerning His Son.

Peter is saying that the ANSWER of a good conscience toward God is ultimately BY the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
      *Response*
Yes, Baptism is our first act of obedience to Christ.
That is why it saves us.
St Peter was quite clear “baptism doth also now save us”
      Scripture is quite clear
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Heb 5:9)
      *You say*
They were saved by water in the sense that these eight souls had FAITH in God's plan for them PRE-CHRIST .
      *Response*
Yes, yet Noah faith also needed this substance of obedience to God.
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
      *You say*
(This is also HOW Abraham was considered RIGHTEOUS PRE-CHRIST). THAT is how they were "saved by water".
      *Response*
Abrahams promise likewise was fulfilled because of his obedience to God
      And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. (Gen 26:4-5)
      *You say*
Baptism is a TYPE of resurrection, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the ANSWER of a good conscience toward God BY the resurrection of His Messiah.
      *Response*
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
      *You say*
Baptism IS obedience to the author of eternal salvation POINTING to Jesus' resurrection from death, because THIS POINT is essential to the true WAY (the resurrection and faith in such) of how men are saved BY God which manifests AS faith in the TRUE gospel concerning His Son.
      *Response*
No, it is pointing to True Faith.
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. (2 John 9)
True Faith is not simply believing that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead; that is a dead faith. (James 2:17)
True Faith is abiding in the teaching of Christs so that we may become partakers in the promises he made possible by his death and resurrection.
The is a Faith founded on Jesus Christ and doing as he said (Luke 9:46-49)
Baptism is where we choose to leave our lives of sin where we have followed Satan and live by his Work which will bring us only death and turn to God to live according to the teaching of his Son which thanks to the payment he made for our sin will bring us life. (Acts 26:15-20)

      response
      Nope
That is a complete misrepresentation of what I said.
We are saved by Christ forgiveness through his blood.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)
He will forgive those who obey him

      *You say*
I'll keep my stance that it's by faith alone!
      Response
      Good luck with that.
      Scripture says
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. (James 2:17)
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. (James 2:24)
Faith alone is anti-biblical and you seem to want to mock God.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
For every man shall bear his own burden.
Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
*Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.*
*For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.*
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
      *You say*
As John the Baptist preached "I baptize you with water, but one is to come that will baptize you with the Holy Spirit! ".
      *Response*
Even with the Holy Spirit, the water of repentance is required.
Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? (Acts 10:47)

I look at it like this. I can truly think I love my kids and I can go around telling everyone I love my kids. But every day there will be proof of that. If my baby for example who is just learning to walk was constantly getting hurt falling into things getting into bad things that could hurt him and all I did was say poor baby or go on that I love him but I never did a single thing to help him or care for him you would see by my actions that i couldn’t possibly truly love my child. If I did there would be works proving that. I would be running to prevent a fall, snatching bad thing out of his hands, I would be protecting him. That would be the proof that I really love him. The same with Jesus. There will be proof that I really love him. It wouldn’t be all talk God is good! And it ends there. And then someone needs me and I say good luck! No, if I love him I’ll keep his commandments. If I love him I’ll love others. I’ll help others. I’ll pray. I’ll be in his word. There will be proof of my love for Christ.

Elsewhere it says one is justified by faith. Therefore the terms "faith" and "faith alone" are not the same.

No sinner can earn their way into heaven. Even doing the works of God does not earn a sinners way into heaven, but he will be damned if he refuses to do what God requires him to do. Since you disagree with me, you need to explain the difference between these two verses.
Romans 3:28; NASB - "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law"
James 2:24; NASB - "You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone."
Clearly Paul says we are justified by faith and James says we are justified by works! Both statements are true, you can't exclude either one! Also, in Romans, Paul makes argument that it's not on the BASIS of "works", while James argues that it's not on the BASIS of "faith alone." Again, both statements are true, therefore you cannot exclude either one! So tell me, 'how do YOU square the two?

For those that throw james 2:24 around saying its not by faith alone but through work
I’m convinced that we don’t really have a conflict here. What James is saying is this: If a person says he has faith, but he gives no outward evidence of that faith through righteous works, his faith will not justify him. Martin Luther, John Calvin, or John Knox would absolutely agree with James. We are not saved by a profession of faith or by a claim to faith. That faith has to be genuine before the merit of Christ will be imputed to anybody. You can’t just say you have faith. True faith will absolutely and necessarily yield the fruits of obedience and the works of righteousness. Luther was saying that those works don’t add to that person’s justification at the judgment seat of God. But they do justify his claim to faith before the eyes of man. James is saying, not that a man is justified before God by his works, but that his claim to faith is shown to be genuine as he demonstrates the evidence of that claim of faith through his works

Amen!!!! I think it's blasphemous and ridiculous to add works to the finished work on the cross, Jesus cried out right before His death in John 19:30 "it is finished." In Hebrews 10:12-14 " But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."
Our sin debt has been paid in full by His death on the cross and are made righteous before God.

      Christ be with you
Protestants have a false understanding of what faith is.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Fatih in Jesus Christ is believing abiding in his teachings so we may partake in the promises he made possible by his death and resurrection.
Notice both the substance that will allow what we hope for and the things not seen
If you look down Hebrews 11 you will see this same sort of example given by it writer for the holy people of the old testament.
St Paul tells us faith is not alone (1 Cor 13:2), it must have love, and those who love Christ obey him (John 14:21-24)
It is why we are told that we must obey Christ to receive eternal life (Heb 5:9) and that God will not be mock by those who pretend other wise. (Gal 6:2-9)
It is never the works though that save us but the Grace of Christ's forgiveness for our sin when we turn to him with the intention of doing his works and away from Satan.

I went in reverse order of what you said at the end. I usually get told that I am a decent enough person. Patient, don't call debts, etc. I read the Bible (also a lot of people's opinions on what is/isn't sin. Do NOT recommend that), and was absolutely miserable for the first months. I'm only five months in now, and those first three were terrible. I stopped doing everything that wasn't related to reading the Bible, my job, or keeping me alive because all of it seemed to be sin. Listening to (non-religious) music? Sin. Playing video games/tabletop games? Sin. Talking about any of that stuff? Sin. Leaving my house on Saturday? Sin. It was all around me and I ended up collapsing in on myself and having anxiety-fueled crying fits. Now I'm starting to see things a bit better. Not quite OK with most of my old hobbies, may never be again, but for now, I pray I am beginning to understand the new man I am in Christ. I was only baptized three months ago, so I may still count as a "baby" Christian.

The way I understand it is that we have to begin with believing Jesus Christ is the Messaiah, Son of God born to a virgin, who lived a perfect life and died a brutal death as a sacrifice for our sin. After 3 days, he rose again and defeated death and sin forever. If we believe in this Gospel, we have forgiveness of our sin through the grace of the finished work of Christ. If we accept this Gospel, we will then serve Christ out of love and obedience, as children do their Earthly father.

True, to a point, but there are no rewards for good intentions, and even after we are saved, the only works that are of any value are those done through the born-again believer by the Holy Spirit. If this were not true, then the thief on the cross did not enter into the Kingdom of God, nor would the belief of Abraham been counted as righteousness toward him. Contrary to Roman Catholic doctrine, there is absolutely no work of man that is pleasing to the Lord, nor any tradition of man that will find favor from Him, or any work that can save him. “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” (Roman 8:1) The assurance of our salvation is sure without works, (John 3:36) the works will be a natural outpouring of the Holy Spirit through us. (Isa.32:17) You should finish the "grace of Christ's forgiveness" verse, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: “Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Eph. 2:8-9) not the Eucharist, not baptism, not the taking of the 'sacraments', not the prayers of any religious individual, not any priest, grace, and grace alone brings a man to the knowledge of the saving grace of God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

@@patrickc3419 Jesus taught Nicodemus the pharise that in order to see and enter the kingdom of God, one must be born again of water and fire. Nicodemus did not at the beggining understood the meaning. but later on he learns it means to be baptized by water by one that has the highh authority of the priesthood, and to be baptized by fire or the receiving of the companionship of the Holy Ghost after baptism by water. Those ordinances after repentance from the receiver are symbolism and a wittness to the Father in heaven that we are worthy and willing to enter into the narrow road and to seek and believe in his Sons words Grace and sacrifice for us. That is only the milk the basic principles, the Meat is the knowledge that comes when other ordinances are taught to believers not unbelievers. The bible has Jesus teaching believers, hearers and doesr of the word after they have been baptized, those are lessons with symbolism including the ones that are taught inside the temple, sacred lessons that we are told about existed but are not told the content thereof. I love your perspective! I was asking God this same question earlier and came across these verses. We are obviously saved by grace due to the fact that all our works are rags compared to God. But it definitely still matters that we produce good fruit in cooperation with Grace and faith.
    References:
Matthew 7: 16. By their fruits ye shall know them.
21: Not everyone that saith unto me, lord, lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven.
22: Many will say to me in that day, lord, lord, have we not prophesied in they name? and in they name have cast out devils? and in they name done many wonderful works?
23: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
James 2: 17--Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works?
22: Seest thou how faith wrough with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
24: Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith onl.
26: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Some Protestant Reformers believe that "BEFORE and AFTER" they received their FAITH in Christ thru GOD'S GRACE, that they DO NOT need ANY GOOD WORKS/DEEDS (Charity of Love)... But the vast majority of Christian Churches including Greek and Roman Catholics worldwide, believe only in "BEFORE" they receive "FAITH in Christ thru God's GRACE," which does not need any amount of Good Works/deeds (Charity of Love) or sacrifices (animal) or to follow any commandments of the Law of Moses for it is all useless to God, after Christ's sacrifice His own BLOOD and died on the Cross for the Sins of Mankind... for it is a FREE GIFT of God, just like our FREEWILL...
But "AFTER" we (Christians) received our FAITH thru God's Grace, we need to follow and practice the Commandments of Christ about doing Good Works/Deeds (Charity of Love) for thy neighbors and foes alike... to MANIFEST/JUSTIFY our FAITH with our CHARITY OF LOVE...
Christ said, (John 15/paraphrased)..."I AM (Christ) the True VINE, you are the BRANCHES (Believers/Christians), my Father is the GARDENER (God), anyone who is "ATTACHED" to the VINE (Christ) that does not BEAR FRUITS, even after the Gardener (God) had PRUNED the Branches BUT still does not BEAR FRUITS, will be CUT-OFF/TAKEN AWAY the Branch/es (believer/s) and THROW them in the FIRE (punishment of Hell/not saved)... Take note: BEAR FRUITS means to "DO" (verb=action) the CHARITY OF LOVE based upon Christ's Teachings and Commandments...
For "FAITH ALONE without GOOD WORKS/DEEDS (Charity of Love) is a DEAD FAITH" (not saved)... James 2:14-26/paraphrased...
St. Paul himself attested and wrote before he was executed (beheaded), that "St. Paul had RAN (done good work/deeds) to the FULLNESS (Fullest) to FINISH the RACE"... St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans was taken out of context and meaning by some Pastors... During the time of St. Paul preaching the Gospel, most of his audience are Gentiles and Jews, most of them knew the Law of Moses, that one must need to do GOOD Works and Animal Sacrifices in order to have favor or be accepted by God... but the New Gospel that St. Paul is teaching is the Law of Christ, that after Christ sacrifice His own Blood at the Cross, died, resurrected and ascended back to Heaven again... All good works/deeds and any Sacrifices are NO longer pleasing (useless) in God's Eyes... God wants us now, to believe, accept, repent, and baptize in the Holy Trinity, to Christ Jesus as our Savior/Messiah and the Son of God and Man, thru God's Grace "FIRST" without (NO) any Good Works, and Sacrifices (Law of Moses) required/necessary/needed for us to "BOAST OF"... that is the true context and meaning of St. Paul's Epistles (letters) to the Romans and Corinthians...
But "AFTER" we received our FAITH in Christ thru the Grace of God, this is the time we are "ATTACHED" to the True/Real VINE (Christ) and we must/need to BEAR FRUITS (to do Good works/ pleasing to the Eyes of God, even if or after God had PRUNED the branches), we (Christians) must/should PICK UP (verb=Action) our own CROSS (LIFE's journey on Earth w/ Christ) and follow/ obey Christ... St. Paul set (made) an example for ALL OF US believers... "RUN (Verb=Works/Deeds) TO THE FULLEST TO FINISH THE RACE"... Facts and Truth, Biblically speaking... Amen.

    • @christeenasnyder
      @christeenasnyder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good question. Let's see what the Bible says: in Romans 1:16, a quick check in my Concordance reveals the word belief is "pisteuo" (greek for 'having faith in'). Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the action based on hope. When God gives us hope in something, we act in faith. Abraham hoped God was telling him the truth enough to act on it, as exemplified in Romans 4:21-22. James 2 will make a lot more sense under this context.
Now, what would faith in Jesus mean? More than hope, or mental disposition to think all this is real: James 2:19
[19]Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Faith would be an action in response: John 14:10-16
[10]Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
[11]Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
[12]Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
[13]And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
[14]If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
[15]If ye love me, keep my commandments.
      [16]And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Works just means how you act on that faith. So do you spend time in the Word and prayer?. Do you have a new heart and want to love others and worship Jesus Christ through your life actions. That is what it means and these are “evidence” of faith. Anyone can feed the homeless (and we should) but that doesn’t make them born again or justified in Gods sight.

The CONTEXT of Faith "Alone" means like this... Analogy/metaphor... For Example... If I read in the book that Mr. Smith entered the theater by himself and exited with his friends."... Can I NOT comprehend/understand/interpret that Mr. Smith entered "ALONE" in the theater just because the word "ALONE" was not written?... that is a RIDICULOUS context... That was what the Bible had TRULY meant by context without the word "ALONE."
The same with FAITH thru the Grace of God, which must come "ALONE" in us without any "work/deeds" that we can at least boast of, by having "first" the "BELIEF" in Christ Jesus who died for our sins and accept Him as our Lord and Savior (messiah/christ),... then after believing, what follows next is to "REPENT" for all our previous transgressions and accept "(Water) BAPTISM" in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit...then we became a NEW Person in Christ Jesus thru the Holy Spirit called Christians, that we may do our DEEDS/WORKS of Charity of Love to your neighbors including enemies that are "Pleasing" in the Sight of God... By these, we no longer can claim all our Good Works/Deeds came 100% from our OWN selves ALONE by the gift of free will but by the ONE who manifested into our new lives in Christ Jesus thru the Holy Spirit called "COMFORTER" of Christians...
All the "GOOD WORKS/DEEDS" that we do in our New Lives with Christ do not come "alone" by our own Freewill but by the help of the Holy Spirit that manifested inside ourselves... St. Paul said, we must STEADFAST and FINISH the race... of what?... Faith and doing Good Works until our last breath (death)...why?... for we might LOSE it in our OWN way (not thru the hands of God) if we are not STEADFAST with our Faith and Good Works/Deeds up to the last END of our earthly lives... For on Judgment Day of God, all will be judged according to their Works/Deeds "accordingly" (Rev. 20:12 / Roman 2:6)... Why ACCORDINGLY?... because the Jews who did not believe in God's Son as the Messiah/Christ will be judged thru their works/deeds based on the Law of Moses... others, like the Sodom and Gomorrah, according to the Bible, God will be more merciful for they never HEARD the Gospel, same with those people who died before the Gospel was preached, same with other religion and beliefs...
For the True Christians (not Christian by birth/name only or the would-be followers of Christ) eventually will not be judged, but rather 'THEY" will all seat down at the judgment table of God and not be condemned in the fire of hell... Wow, we (Christians) will be SPECTATORS to all people that God will be judged, the bible even said, Christians will be able also to judge and be able to accuse their persecutors, and their murderers as well... Praise be to God...
To God be the Glory, Power, and Honor, in Christ Jesus name, above all other names, our Lord and Savior... Amen.

In light of the Baptist understanding of grace vs. works, I'd appreciate an explanation of the following circumstance: A). Ted was a serial killer who enjoyed devouring, torturing, and killing other people for his own megalomaniacal delight. He admitted that Jesus was the Christ while he was on his deathbed. B). A decent man named Omar was born in a Sudanese hamlet in 400 BC. He looked out for the underprivileged, was loyal and caring, and looked for the village orphans. He was geographically and linguistically isolated, so he never had the chance to learn about Christ. Who gets to paradise and who goes to hell according to the baptist doctrine? The serial killer, or Option B. The philanthropist Omar

Here are some good ways to put the “person who never hears the Gospel” thing.
    1. The native in New Guinea who has never heard the Gospel cannot be saved through God’s revelation through creation, morals and conscious.
    2. Are people who have never heard the Gospel idolaters? Yes.
3.Is this fare in people’s eyes? No. It’s just the way sin has affected all creation.

What is counted as righteousness in the Bible?
"Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness. Is faith in God counted as righteousness?
Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. [4] Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. [5] But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.ephesians 2 ; 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast....love to the one and only true lord..

    TELL US AGAIN
    Tell us again
    about justification by faith alone,
for we are no different than Israel of old.
Each week we face Jordans and giants
as our memory dims - our faith grows cold -
and then we think we need to help
    the Creator of all along;
    as did Abram with Hagar.
We are blind, forgetful and wrong.
    Tell us again
how a work and an idol can slip,
like a snake, in our adamic way.
We try to placate the impeccable
    with some pitiful act or trite words we say;
when it's actually a contrite heart we need
to be humble in spirit and groan -
for his blood was and is all sufficient.

1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (KJV) Faith alone profit you nothing without love, though you have all FAITH, though you bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though you give my body to be burned??? You are NOTHING.
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
Matthew 25:31-46 - To do no harm is not the same as to help. Commission and omission both are sins.
The Gospel of Matthew presents Jesus as the New Messiah. Like Moses, Jesus also promulgates the Law of God. As with the ancient law, the new one, given by Jesus, also contains five books or discourses. The Sermon on the Mountain (Mt 5:1 to 7:27), the first discourse, opens with eight Beatitudes. The discourse on vigilance (Mt 2:4, 1 to 25, 46), the fifth discourse, contains the description of the Last Judgment. The Beatitudes describe the door of entrance into the Kingdom, enumerating eight categories of people: the poor in spirit, the meek, the afflicted, those who hunger and thirst for justice, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemakers and the persecuted because of justice (Mt 5:3-10). The parable of the Last Judgment tells us what we should do in order to possess the Kingdom: accept the hungry, the thirsty, the foreigners, the naked, the sick and the prisoners (Mt 25:35-36): At the beginning, as well as at the end of the New Law, there are the excluded and the marginalized.
Matthew 25:31-33: Opening of the Last Judgment. The Son of Man gathers together around Him the nations of the world. He separates people as the shepherd does with the sheep and the goats. The shepherd knows how to discern. He does not make a mistake; sheep on the right, goats on the left. Jesus does not make a mistake. Jesus does not judge nor condemn. (cfr. Jn 3:17; 12:47). He does not separate alone. It is the person himself/herself who judges and condemns because of the way in which he/she behaves toward the little ones and the excluded.
Matthew 25:34-36: The sentence for those who are at the right hand of the Judge. Those who are at the right hand of the judge are called Blessed of my Father! That is, they receive the blessing which God promised to Abraham and to his descendants (Gen 12:3). They are invited to take possession of the Kingdom, prepared for them from the foundation of the world. The reason for the sentence is the following: I was hungry, a foreigner, naked, sick and prisoner, and you accepted me and helped me! This sentence makes us understand who are the sheep. They are the persons who accepted the Judge when he was hungry, thirsty, a foreigner, naked, sick and prisoner. Because of the way of speaking about my Father and the Son of Man, we can know that the Judge is precisely Jesus Himself. He identifies Himself with the little ones!
Matthew 25:37-40: A request for clarification and the response of the Judge: Those who accept the excluded are called just . That means that the justice of the Kingdom is not attained by observing norms and prescriptions, but rather by accepting those in need. But it is strange that the just do not even know themselves when they accepted Jesus in need. Jesus responds: Every time that you have done this to one of my brothers, you have done it to me. Who are these little brothers of mine? In other passages of the Gospel of Matthew, the expression “my brothers” indicates the disciples (Mt 12:48-50; 28:10). This also indicates the members of the community who are more abandoned and neglected who have no place and are not well received (Mt 10:40). Jesus identifies Himself with them. In the broader context of the last parable, the expression “my smallest brothers” is extended and includes all those who have no place in society. It indicates all the poor. The just and the blessed by my Father are all the persons from all nations who accept and welcome others with total gratuity, independently of the fact that they are Christians or not.
Matthew 25:41-43: The sentence for those who were at the left hand side. Those who were on the other side of the Judge are called cursed and they are destined to go to the eternal fire, prepared by the devil and his friends. Jesus uses a symbolic language common at that time to say that these persons will not enter into the Kingdom. And here, also, their is only one reason: they did not accept or welcome Jesus as one who is hungry, thirsty, a foreigner, naked, sick and/or a prisoner. It is not that Jesus prevents them from entering into the Kingdom, rather it is our way of acting that is our blindness which prevents us from seeing Jesus in the little ones.
Matthew 25:44-46: A request for clarification and the response of the Judge. The request for clarification indicates that it is a question of people who have behaved well, people who have their conscience in peace. They are certain to have always practiced what God asked from them. For this reason they were surprised when the Judge says that they did not accept Him, did not welcome Him. The Judge responds: Every time that you have not done these things to one of my brothers, the little ones, you did not do it to me. It is the omission! They did not do anything extra. They only missed practicing good towards the little ones and the excluded. This is the way the fifth Book of the New Law ends!
In the saints and Church Fathers we have a lot to learn about virtues and vices. It is not enough to just avoid vice, or sin, but to also work toward attaining virtue and virtuous behavior. To do no harm is not the same as to help. This is what we are called to do: to not just avoid doing wrong or harm, but to go out of our way to do good as well.
What struck you the most in this parable of the Last Judgment?
Do I focus my life more on avoiding harm or on doing good for others?
Stop and think: if the Last Judgment would take place today, would you be on the side of the sheep or on the side of the goats?

Just feels like that sort of mindset shuts down an honest conversation (any criticism is immediately dismissed as "from Satan", and ignored). I abandoned belief decades ago and consider it one of the better decisions of my life (it represented a change from blindly accepting any irrational belief to trying to match my beliefs as closely to truth as possible).
If we value truth, then we must be able to ground each of our beliefs in a reliable way of knowing truth. If we don't have that, we don't have a valid justification for believing the idea is actually true. _We know faith isn't reliable._ If you have faith you can fly unaided... _you can't!_ If you have faith that you have a million dollars... _you don't!_ Certainly it makes sense why a _falsehood_ would have to rely on faith (what else would a falsehood _have?_ ) but for a truth to rely on it? That seems ridiculous.

He didn’t create sin we brought it into the world ourselves, beginning with Eve and Adam eating the forbidden fruit and from then on. God created Hell for the Devil after he was thrown out of Heaven for being sinful. The devil does everything in his power to cause others to sin and lead them to a path of destruction so that they can too earn a life of Hell. God is loving an merciful and for that He sent Jesus to die for us so that we would be made worthy of Heaven again if we have faith. But just because He’s loving, doesn’t mean He isn’t just. If Bob is about to stab Billy in the heart with a knife, all-knowing means Gary knows that Billy will die when this happens (he knows how humans work), and all-powerful means Gary can stop the knife. So if Gary is all knowing and all powerful, the outcome where Billy gets killed _will never happen_ unless Gary intends for it to happen. So then when someone sets up a forbidden fruit and decides the consequences of eating it, and creates the instincts and behavior of humans (and talking snakes), _if that God is all knowing and all powerful, this was 100% what they intended._ So yes, by the Bible's stories God absolutely intended for a great many people to go to hell.
Thankfully we don't have evidence that the Bible's supernatural claims are true, so we don't appear to be living in a reality like that.

_Melissa, do you believe that if you make one mistake and break one law you ought to be punished for eternity?_ Clearly any person with working empathy knows this is an unjust system. But the "context" of the Bible never meant that way... the Works/Deeds that the Bible emphasized were the Works/Deeds based on the Law of Moses that we can at least boast of, but not the Works/ Deeds taught by Christ Jesus like "Love our Enemies just like we love ourselves or commonly called the Charity of Love (verb = work/deeds)."...

_So should we rely on faith to justify our beliefs?_ Not if we value truth.
If we _don't_ value truth, then sure we could rely on whatever methods we want to form our beliefs. We could say it's "justified" and pretend that it is, and it wouldn't matter that that would be entirely wrong, because truth wouldn't be our goal.
_But if we value truth, we cannot rely on demonstrably unreliable methods._ We can't rely on faith. Evidence is the only reliable method I'm aware of, so it seems to be the only reliable method of knowing truth worth relying on.

In the first 30 minutes he sets up a false dichotomy: "by works" vs. "by faith alone." Neither are true. It's by grace received "by" or "through" faith (Eph 2:8) . . . *not* just because we _have_ faith.
By or through faith we can "see" the choice - and the need - to "come to God." Without faith God that exists and rewards, we would not see the choice, and it would be impossible to come to Him and please Him:
▬ "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)
It is coming to God on His terms that pleases Him, not faith alone. Faith is the "gift of God" (Eph 2:8) to call us. Question is, will we answer the call and come to God on His terms?
God's terms is repentance: God "now commands all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30). If we'll obey, we'll enter His promised mercy:
▬ "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
And our past sins will be "blotted out":
▬ "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).
And we'll receive the gift of the holy spirit:
▬ "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38)
▬ "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him." (Acts 5:32)
That's right: "faith alone" is not enough, we must act on our faith: we must obey and come to God in repentance. For *that* we please Him, and receive his promised mercy, and receive remission of past sins (Rom 3:25; 2 Peter 1:9) and receive the gift of the holy spirit . . . by which we enter "the presence of the Lord" (re: Acts 3:19).

Unfortunately Mr Durbin is equating "faith alone"/"trusting in Christ" with *_believing._*
_Faith_ and _believe_ are different words in the original Greek. Faith was a noun: trust or intellectual acceptance that this or that is true. Believe was a verb, comitting to your faith by acting on it, by obeying.
The apostle James used Abraham's example to illustrate the difference. Abraham had faith. But is was His obedience that made His faith complete and alive. By his "works" - his obedience (nothing to do with law, or good deeds) - He was deemed to be a believer and was justifed to God, *"and not by faith only."*
▬ "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:20-24)
So we see that believing goes beyond "faith only." *Believers* are those who act on their faith and obey. And for _that_ we are promised mercy (Prov 28:13, remission of past sins (Acts 3:19, Rom 3:25, 2 Peter 1:9) and the gift of the holy spirit (Acts 2:38; 5:32).
@ 27:14 Mr Durbin says *_"Here's the God of glory, God Himself in the flesh, telling us how a person receives the gift of eternal life in Him. And the answer is trusting in Him, believing in Him, faith in Him."_* Then he quotes John 3:36, but seemingly glazed over the "obey" part; believers are those who obey:
▬ “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
*Is the gospel something we just trust or have faith in . . . or, is the gospel something we must obey?*
▬ "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that *obey* not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Th 1:8)
▬ "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that *obey* not the gospel of God?" (1 Peter 4:17)
▬ "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that *obey* him" (Hebrews 5:9)
We've seen that those who obey and come to God in repentance receive His promised mercy (Prov 28:13) and have their past sins "blotted out" (Acts 3:19). They have "remission of sins that are past" (Rom 3:25), "purged" of "old sins" (2 Peter 1:9).
Note how Acts 10:43 says the same: those who *believe* in Him - act and obey by coming to Him in repentance - receive remission of sins:
▬ "To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
So now "believe" John 3:16 comes to _life_ in its full meaning. "Trusting" is necessary, yes, but it is not enough. We must believe: act on our trust - our faith - and obey. Otherwise our faith is dead. Jesus said "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5; also see 2 Peter 3:9). So it makes perfect sense to say that repentance is a necessary part of believing. "Faith alone" is not enough.

Did Jesus say, it is not for you to do anything, but I will do it all for you?
    No, No, NO, NO
Jesus told him to keep his commandments.
This is also reinforced in Romans 2:1-13 where Paul states that everyone will have their eternal fate decided on judgment day - by their deeds done in this life.

You can't be justified by it, you can't be saved by faith alone! But let's take it a step further and make the application. Let's ask the question, 'what must I do to be saved'? The Bible says one must believe, repent, be willing to confess Him of course, and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. That is the point a person is saved, but then he must remain faithful to Christ lest he fall away! So, yes, it is not by "faith alone" from start to finish. Basically a person should know your a Christian through your actions and the way youn live your life, not by your mouth. Works follow after Faith and salvation.

@Not My last name Thank you! I unknowingly was following teachers that believed in faith alone... after years of being a Christian, I finally heard the other side of the argument and was convinced. Context is so important, also spotting out how the fake teachers add on to the Word of God. Only time "faith alone" is mentioned is in James when it is saying you are not saved by faith alone.

@Not My last name I felt guilty in the beginning thinking isn't what Jesus did for me enough, but after really looking into the Bible, it is clear, after faith, we need works.
I think we lose all responsibility if we believe okay we are saved, don't have to do anything, and we can't lose our salvation so lets go on living in the flesh.
