  • Watch the newest sermon from Apologia Church for our "Why We Believe" series. Pastor Jeff Durbin teaches part of 2 on why we believe in Justification by Faith Alone or Sola Fide. Pastor Jeff takes us through the Apostle Paul's systematic explanation of Justification by Faith in his letter to the Romans, deals a bit with Galatians, and responds to James 2. We hope this series is a blessing to you. Tell someone about it!

@Wayne S oh I know what he is. He made his account just a few days ago. I just wanted to know if he could explain how can anyone have peace with God. I know he can't but I was wanting to see him try and what type of hermeneutics he would use.
God bless and have a one.

@Habakkuk 2:5 and there it is. So all that stuff about jews and gentiles only have peace with God through faith in Christ means nothing. I feel sorry for you to have such hate for someone's skin color I pray God would open your eyes to your sin of racism and grant you repentance. You should try to really think about what it means to love God and love neighbor because all you are producing is hate. From the abundance of your heart your mouth confesses. You should love every person because they are made in the image of God lest you forget we are all fallen because of one man's sin but by one man's righteous we are made righteous who is jesus Christ the God man who died for the Sins of the people. Repent and believe the Gospel.

I listen to you often, and your ministry is such a blessing to me. I wish there was a church like yours here in Pittsburgh. I just ask anyone that reads this to pray for me to have an obedient heart. I'm a new Christian with a lifetime of Christian knowledge, but I have an extremely rebellious heart, and I have lived a very hedonistic life. I don't want that life anymore, but I'm having a very difficult time resisting drugs when they're around. It's not that I'm addicted. I truly think that I have a part of me that just wants to rebel. That wants to hold on to that piece of self. Pray that I am able to overcome that desire. Pray that I can completely commit to God. Thank you.

Hi Terry, As Christians we find ourselves living with two natures. One, the nature of the flesh with all of its desires. This fleshly nature is dying and loves that which is evil. It craves only the immediate satisfaction of itself to the exclusion of all other things. Then there is the new nature that has been placed in us through the process of rebirth (through Christ and the cross). This nature loves that which is good and seeks life. This new nature sees the whole person that you are, and seeks the edification of both soul and body. But there is also a third thing in you, the spirit of God, and that spirit wraps his arms around you, coming along side to help you walk though you are crippled. This is the spirit in you that judges the two other parts. This is the spirit in you that loves the part of you that loves the good, and hates the part of you that loves the evil. Do not be under the command of some drug. Do not be a slave to the things of this world which seek always to kill and destroy. Rebel against these things and instead submit yourself to the new nature and the new spirit placed within you. God is the God of life. Choose life. There is room in Christ for a rebel, rebel against the wicked things of this world. Finally, don't be afraid to seek medical solutions to addiction. A good doctor has value. (I know you say you're not addicted, and you may not be, but addicts say that too.) May God bless you and keep you.

Great ending, I really needed that after struggling so much these last few months with major depression despite things going really well for me in so many areas of life. So good to be reminded that it isn't about me having a few good days of obedience to make things better, but about constantly clinging to Christ and His work

I love your perspective! I was asking God this same question earlier and came across these verses. We are obviously saved by grace due to the fact that all our works are rags compared to God. But it definitely still matters that we produce good fruit in cooperation with Grace and faith.
    References:
Matthew 7: 16. By their fruits ye shall know them.
21: Not everyone that saith unto me, lord, lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven.
22: Many will say to me in that day, lord, lord, have we not prophesied in they name? and in they name have cast out devils? and in they name done many wonderful works?
23: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
James 2: 17--Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works?
22: Seest thou how faith wrough with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
24: Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith onl.
26: For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

It would be great if you could do a full sermon on the new covenant to help myself and others come to a clear understanding of what it is, what the specifics of it are for those under it (i.e. what are the requirements), and as a bonus what role the law plays in it. If there already if a video on this please share the link.
I'm finally finding clarity and seeing the synergy of the testaments in our Holy Bible through your ministry. I wish that there was an apologia plant near me, but seeing as I live in the buckle of the bible belt I am satisfied with these videos. May God bless your work of teaching believers and proclaiming the gospel to the heathen.

@Habakkuk 2:5 When you say "you people," who are you referring to? A group within Christianity? Also, I always assumed salvation was available for all who believed, no specific country or set of people are currently condemned besides non-believers. Am I correct in saying that the condemnation of Esau is being pulled from Malachi?
      Malachi 1:2-4
"I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? [Was] not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; this saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever."
Several prophecies include the salvation of "all nations." Is that negated for Esau? I don't ask this in a disingenuous matter, but in genuine curiosity.

      @Habakkuk 2:5
Believe it or not, the will of the Father for Jesus His son is to wait for the Father to send who they predestined together before the foundation of the earth. Then once the Father sends the chosen to Jesus, the will of the Father is that Jesus does not lose any of those He receives. Crazy huh?
We don't choose to receive Jesus. God chooses the people who get to be received by Jesus.
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
      John 6:37‭-‬40
Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

There were two seeds planted in us from the beginning of days.
One planted causing confusion and darkness,
    blindness,
the other of truth and the light.
Although these two seeds are planted in the same vessel we can decide which one we allow to grow.
The evil seed in us is dressed up to look beautiful, but when we touch it we bleed. Yet we continue to touch it because of its beauty, it's blinding beauty,
    it's deceptive beauty.
We are programmed from youth to long for that which will ultimately hurt us.
We disregard that still small voice constantly warning us of those sharp thorns,
and yet we still grasp on to them ever so strongly.
We are unwilling to let go until we realize something is speaking to us,
    the voice of reason,
    the voice of goodness,
the voice of this other seed longing to grow, longing to be watered and feed.
Suddenly we realize our error, and discover we have neglected the one thing we should have been grasping for and allowing to grow.
So we start pulling the weeds from around this little neglected plant,
desperately trying to shine one ray of sunlight on it
so it can begin to grow.
Sometimes those weeds are so thick that some of us will give up, and allow those weeds to overcome all of their being, and those weeds have now trapped these individuals giving them a false sense of defeat.
God has the power to destroy all those weeds blinding us, if we would only stop long enough to speak to Him, and allow God to shine His light upon our garden.
Praise be to His Name for ever and ever...

When u have a bad harvest, u plow it under!
◄ Ephesians 2:8 ►And God raised u up with Christ and seated u with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to u in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace that u have been saved thru faith, and this not from urselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.… So Grace Alone and Faith Alone mean that God loves, forgives, and saves u not because of who u are or what u do, but because of the work of Christ.
◄ James 2:18 ►ur 'faith' by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead. But someone will say, “u have faith and I have deeds.” Show me ur faith without deeds, and I will show u my faith by my deeds. u believe that God is one. Good for u! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.…

This sermon is full of God's love for us but unless Jeff says the specific words you saw in those pithy facebook memes about Jesus then he's missing something right? I suggest reading and studying more of the Bible than just the "verse of the day" on your Bible app. You'll be surprised how much relevant teaching is there that has no relation to the watered down nonsense most churches push these days.

How do you have faith in Jesus ? Romans 10:17 , " So then faith cometh by hearing , and hearing by the word of God " . Jesus Christ words in Mattheew 19:16-17 , when asked what good things must I do to have eternal life ? Jesus Answer , KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS . Jesus Christ words in Matthew 5:17 , " Think not that I am come to destroy the law , or the prophets : I am not come to destroy , but to fulfill . What did he means by the word fulfill ? Answer , Luke 24:44-45 , " And he said unto them , These are the words which I spake unto you , while I was yet with you , that all things must be fulfilled , which were written in the law of Moses , and in the prophets , and in the Psalms , concerning me . Then opened he their understanding , that they might understand the scriptures " . Just wanna share this as well. Purty important here this here piece of scripture. Hebrews 11 to brotha
    James 2:18-26 KJV
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. [19] Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. [20] But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? [21] Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? [22] Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? [23] And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. [24] Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. [25] Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? [26] For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Hebrews 11 is very important it tells us faith is not alone it must have substance.
It then lists the substance of the faith of the holy people of the old testament.
It could usually be put down to obedience which we must have to have eternal life (Heb 5:9)

Is knitting into a local body of believers a secondary issue?
I have a friend who only likes to worship online with her fiance who is 3 hours away and her father who is two states away and her son who is down the hall 🤷🏻‍♀️
I confronted her with scripture as to why I think that is unbiblical.
Hebrews 13:17, how do you do that if you have no leadership over you except yourself 🤷🏻‍♀️
What about Matthew 18? If your brother sends against you go to them, then take two, then tell the church... Are you going to call all the online Pastor's? Is a Church who makes their full worship service available online opening themselves to being accountable before God for all the souls that stop by and watch that day?
Ephesians 4, God gave gifts to the church.. apostles, pastors teachers and such

If it's not a secondary issue then praying the Lord's Spirit will rebuke her spirit, and help her heal from whatever keeps her from obeying

Mr Durbin 100% misses James' point about Abraham. Abraham was deemed a believer - and was justified to God - because he acted on His faith and obeyed God. He left for the promised land (re Heb 11:8), and later offered Isaac. His obedience made his faith alive and complete. His obedience was his "works" (nothing to do with the law, nothing to do with good works). For his obedience he was deemed a believer, and was justified to God . . . *"and not by faith only."*
▬ "But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only." (James 2:20-24)
So we see that true *_believing_* goes beyond "faith only"; believers are those who act on their faith and obey God. Otherwise, faith is dead.
Today Jesus is "the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him" (Hebrews 5:9)
The gospel is something we must obey . . . not just "trust in":
▬ "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that *obey* not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Th 1:8)
▬ "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that *obey* not the gospel of God?" (1 Peter 4:17)
    =====================
Please do no be confused about "works." "Works" refers to different things, depending on the context. When Paul says "not by works" in Romans 3, 4, 5 he was referring to the _works of the law._ That context was esablished clearly in Romans 3:20 and 28.
Same goes for "good works" or deeds, Eph 2:9, 10. No one is saved by doing good works, nor is anyone saved by doing the works of the law.
Salvation is by grace, received "through" faith (Eph 2:8) . . . *not* just because we _have_ faith. By or through faith we can "see" the choice - and the need - to "come to God." Without faith God that exists and rewards, we would not see the choice, and it would be impossible to come to Him and please Him:
▬ "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Hebrews 11:6)
It is coming to God on His terms that pleases Him, not faith alone. Faith is the "gift of God" (Eph 2:8) to call us. Question is, will we answer the call and come to God on His terms?
    God's terms is repentance: God
▬ "now commands all men every where to repent" (Acts 17:30). If we'll obey, we'll enter His promised mercy:
▬ "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." (Proverbs 28:13)
And our past sins will be "blotted out":
▬ "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19, NKJV).
And we'll receive the gift of the holy spirit:
▬ "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:38)
▬ "And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him." (Acts 5:32)
That's right: "faith alone" is not enough, we must act on our faith: we must obey and come to God in repentance. For *that* we please Him, and receive his promised mercy, and receive remission of past sins (Rom 3:25; 2 Peter 1:9) and receive the gift of the holy spirit (Acts 2:38, 5:32) . . . by which we enter "the presence of the Lord" (re: Acts 3:19).
Jesus said "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5; also 2 Pet 3:9). Now it becomes clear that "believeth in Him" in John 3:16 involves much more than "faith alone." As per Abraham's example, believing goes beyond "faith alone" or "just trust."
Faith is "the gift of God" (Eph 2:8), given to us to call us. Question is, will we answer the call and obey, coming to God on His terms? If we'll obey, we'll enter His promised mercy and grace. Yes, God has conditions for receipt of His grace. Grace cannot be _earned:_ it's _promised_ - and given freely - to those who merit it by following His instructions.

You’re too hung up on James 2, there’s plenty of NT evidence teaching that a believer must bear fruits, or that one will be cutoff if no evidence is found, etc.
Faith alone leads to righteousness but we must demonstrate fruit.
Just as professed compassion without action is phony, the kind of faith that is without works is mere empty profession, not genuine saving faith.
James 2:10 talks on law, but that’s not works/fruits.
Explain the purpose for demonstrating the 9 fruit of the SPIRIT if it’s not to demonstrate genuine spirit filled.
    Dead faith has no evidence.

James 2:14 - What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him? Clearly in context James is talking about the kind of faith that saves. It is not by faith alone, but by a faith that has works. This is the only place in the bible that "faith alone" is mentioned and guess what it says? A man is not justified by faith alone (cf. v.24). The bible is clear, a man is justified by faith, but not by "faith alone." It is also interesting to note that Abraham was a believer in God long before Genesis 15:6. Work that one out.

@@abckids3476 Of course the works must come from faith, I agree. Otherwise, the works mean nothing! Without faith it is impossible to please God, therefore works must be prompted from faith in order to please Him. A man is not going to repent before God unless he believes in God and is convicted of his sin. But without repentance from sin he cannot be saved (Luke 13:3, 5, 24:47) - that's just logical. But note: that means that salvation is not simply a matter of "faith alone."
Then you have Peter's first sermon concerning the resurrected Christ in Acts 2, where having believed his message, and being convicted of their sin, they ask Peter, 'what shall we do?" What's Peter's response? 'You're okay, you've already believed, salvation is by "faith alone?" No! But he tells them to, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38). Check out the next verse, Peter says that this promise was not just for them, but "for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
Is salvation by "faith alone?" I don't think so!

@Lauren Ferris James 2:1-13 talks about how those who live by the law or their own righteousness to be saved will not due to the fact that as sinners we are not able to live up to that standard. We need the Grace of God that comes only through faith in Jesus. The rest of the chapter talks about what true faith looks like as was explained earlier in this thread. These aren’t teachings of men, but they come straight from the word of God. I would argue that your understanding of this passage comes from men not the Inerrant Word of God
