- As a human, we are host to loads of symbiotic bacteria and parasites, both inside and outside our body. So, in a way, you _do_ own TRILLIONS of inner bacteria and heaps of little external animals, that are all dedicated to YOU, and to which you are helping to 'look after'. They are all well trained (unless we get sick and then they can run amock!), but in general, they help us stay healthy. Just be glad you cannot see them, that none of them can bark, and that you don't need a leash to walk them daily. Best. Dawg

I like how Mister Pirate hangs around... he could easily just jump off the table and go on his merry way. Instead he waits while the doctor talks to someone else (us!) and waits and waits... love how he finally goes in for a nose rub as if to tell the doctor, hey, I'm here stop talking to your imaginary friends and pay attention to me!

My recently departed kitty had kidney disease. I was lucky that she took to the prescription kibble right away. She wouldn't eat any of the canned food options unless I mixed in a good amount of the canned food she liked though. I was able to get up to about 60% Rx canned food, but no further. My vet and I thought that the moisture she got from the canned food was worth it, even with some of the regular stuff mixed in. She stayed pretty stable (activity and blood tests) for 2 full years before things fell apart. She was 18.
Jeff Ralston sorry for your loss. You did everything you could for her and 18 is a good old age. My Siamese Mixa is 14 and also has kidney failure. She's been taking Semintra for several years and earlier this year we managed to change her diet to special renal canned food (it was very hard to make her accept the change). She's had two blood tests since then and they both came out perfect! Hopefully she'll stay this way for many more years.

Please don't ever change your format- I love the fact that you don't use music, and it's just you and the pet with your soft calming voice. It's absolutely fantastic, and I connect much more to it than other vet channels.

Thank you! Its not training per se, but rather developing a good relationship with the cats, and letting them know I can be trusted to act in a sensible manner (from their perspective). I suggest you look at "How to pick up a cat like a pro" for all my tips about how to build trust with felines!
It's just personal non-scientific anecdote, but I find that both cats and dogs -- though especially dogs -- tend to try to pay attention when you're talking in a low calm voice, like the doctor is doing in the video.
I had the somewhat misfortune of having to walk a big German shepherd dog that my brother wanted when I was in the army, and after a year or so couldn't give a crap about any more. I liked the dog, mind you, but he wasn't trained in any way, and pulled like an ox. I discovered that if I talked to him the whole way, he'd pretty much walk by my leg. Mind you, I got funny looks from people hearing me telling fairy tales and whatnot to a dog, but the dog was too busy trying to figure out what I'm telling him :p
With cats, reacting to what you say is VERY low priority, even when they understand it, so it's not as effective. But a gentle scratch behind the ears or under the chin, and a calm voice tends form some degree of association anyway.
NegotiatorGladiarius, I've discovered this is true with my cats. One of our Bengals is a little spit-fire, and she is more than ready to swat any of her sisters who get too close. But if I immediately start talking in a low, soothing voice as soon as one of the other cats invades her personal space, she will not swat them. This works every time. No idea why it works as it is the only time she listens to me (except when I break out the treats), but it certainly does.

A soft touch and a gentle voice goes a long way.
Your connection with Pirate is very similar to how I interact with my female.
She is 16 and we understand each other like an old married couple!

How are they little devils? What do they do?
It's probably a mix of Mr. Pirate's personality and him being an elderly cat. My young cat's more cuddly after I've played with him awhile and he uses some energy :)

He stared at the doctor's shoulder pretty intently and even made a little move toward it. 1:08 and 4:25 a true shoulder cat!I had to change The Donut's food from dry to wet. I put the cat food down and she started eating it without hesitation because she ate anything and she was a pig, RIP Donut Girl.
This vet is so easy to listen to and Mr. Pirate is the sweetest thing.

Watch how he's talking but also paying attention to how the cat is responding to his petting. If the cat is giving off a 'that's enough of that kind of petting' vibe, he gives it a break and changes to a gentler, different form the cat's now ready to enjoy. Lovely, and very skilled.

I just started using Fortiflora recently and our cat really enjoys it. I've even used it to coat pill pockets since he loves it so much. I don't even mix the powder in with his food and just dump it on top, he literally laps it up, must be so tasty.

1st of all I love your channel and your presentation!!
Well I am harbouring a stray cat for 3 years now. I think it originally "belongs" (if a cat can ever belong) to a neighbour who buys all kinds of animals. I have a cat door installed so "Mango" can do whatever he wants to. Here my observations with Mango:
1. You present him with food he doesn't like too much indoors, outdoors and he will suddenly eat it. Maybe he is in competition then with the hedgehog and magpies?
2. You buy cat food with fish and he won't eat it. On the other hand he captures fish from nearby lakes and eats them (without the head). Maybe hunting is part of the flavour?

Cats are weird....
I've found when other cats are around and they have to compete for food, they will gobble up whatever you put out for them. I'm feeding stray cats outside and they never fuss about which food is put out. They simple eat it. Whereas, inside cats I've had could be finicky.

Pirate is so cuddly! ;-) Just like my Suzie. Thank You for two bowls idea. Suzie is overly careful cat and very sensitive to intense scents so it's not easy to make her eat something new. Yet I do have to since we need to help her to control her wieght. So thank You very much, now we will know how to help her get through this transition from her old to new ones eating habits.

One time, my cat was sick and my vet gave me some pouches of Fortiflora to help him eat. I put the pouches on the kitchen counter in a ziploc bag, and the next morning, they were all torned apart. It was like cocaine to my cat.
