Something I notice is that he keeps his petting balanced: Sesame turns to nip when his hands move down to her rear end, but if he balances that touch with a hand near her head, she remains calm. After that warning, he makes sure to touch her head or neck every time he has a hand lower on her back. He also leaves a hand pressed on her head if he's just standing idly - sort of as a reassurance that he's there and isn't moving, a signal to Sesame for her to stay still, and a way to grab her if she turns aggressive.
I've seen a lot of cats get defensive when people touch their rears, and I think that's part of the "sudden aggression" people experience with cats. Just being able to observe his habits is helpful in modifying my own behaviour with kitties. It's important to consider each cat's comfort and preference, and to keep in mind possible pain like he mentions! Thank you so much!

      @MrDmadness 5 ปีที่แล้ว +52

agree with everything you say, cats dont like it when you touch their hind legs or buts usually. I also notice that people sometimes pet a cat too fast or slow Etc changes the message and the cat/human interface ;) . and then there's Static electricity. they go mental sometimes because a persons pet it literally raking little shocks across their backs that the human with a calloused hand may not even feel . Often times I find cat aggression is because the human is not understanding what is actually happening and just goes "meh, cat is being an asshole" ( even though they sometime just ARE being jerks )

I never even considered that because I thought it was so so very obvious when they got too long (scratches help with that) I have however seen a stray (?) Cat with many ingrown claws. It was the best discovery of my life, because after taking him to the vet he became the love of my life. I lost him less than a year later. But with all the surgeries and health issues he had the best quality of life we could accomplish.

  • @janiceboyd3996

I had a cat with a chronic limp. I took her to the vet - but we couldn't find anything wrong with her foot or her leg. Then, at her next check-up, the vet discovered that my kitty had several bad teeth. So she went in for oral surgery, and had a bunch of teeth extracted. Getting rid of the bad teeth eliminated the limp.
I don't know if it was referred pain, or if the medicine she took recovering from her surgery also helped with her leg. Whatever it was -- that oral surgery had a great effect. She was a much happier cat after that.

This may be in the first video, idk! But a stressed cat will also lash out. I visited someone last year and their stressed cat gave me clear permission to touch him when I "asked" permission and began immediately purring. Almost immediately the cat then withdrew permission and scratched me. I saw the withdrawn permission but didn't react fast enough. My bad. The cat seemed to experience sensory overload and needed me to stop. I noticed the cat was EXCEEDINGLY stressed out because of the two toddler boys running around the house constantly yelling. The owner told me the cat isn't friendly but the responsiveness and instant purr-motor told me otherwise. I felt sad for the poor cat who could not escape the chaos. No one was watching out for the cat's emotional health.

This is a must - see video for every cat owner I wish I had known about chronic pain before my cat got seriously ill. It took over a week to diagnose osteoarthritis in our cat's neck. Tiger stopped eating, was lethargic, developed very high fever, was severely dehydrated. The vet didn't find out the reason of his illness until they gave him some pain meds and did X-ray. He was prescribed steroids and more pain meds. It took a lot of time for him to recover: regain appetite and energy. 6 months later, he is healthy, full of life and he look beautiful again, his coat is perfect and he gained some weight.

Thank you so much for putting out these videos. I just wanted to share that my precious cat, Violet, passed away at the age of 18 on Wednesday. She had a stroke a month ago, then had some symptoms that got better with steroids, then got worse when the steroids wore off. She stopped grooming, stopped sharpening her claws, didn't jump, pressed her head into my hand and fell over to the right, etc. I knew she had pain, and I didn't want her to keep suffering. I was referred to a Veterinary Neurologist. They did an MRI and her little heart stopped while she was under sedation. It turns out that she had a massive tumor in her brain stem that was inoperable. So they called me and suggested that they stop CPR, and I agreed. Violet was so precious to me. I watched all of your videos while she was sick, trying to learn as much as I could. I really appreciated your knowledge and calm demeanor and learned so much. Thank you for doing these videos. They mean so much.

I had a rescued Persian years ago who would bite and was a grumpy guy. We had him shaved because he wasn’t grooming well, and he reacted badly to brushing. Shaving changed him immediately from mostly untouchable to a sweet boy. We were baffled but kept him shaved since he seemed so much happier.
After watching this now I realize like the poor guy was likely in pain from mats. Keeping him shaved probably gave him a much better quality of life than I realized at the time. Thanks so much!

Great video! I was fostering cats for a while and we had one peculiar case with a cat that was incredibly stand-offish and only really interacted with humans by swiping and nipping us, he wasn't interested in cuddles or pats but was highly food motivated. I watched how he interacted with the other cats and found out that he was actually incredibly playful, but he didn't hold back at all when he played and his swipes and nips were his weary attempts at goating us into playing with him. We got him some more toys and after figuring out some games together along with some food motivation, he became one of the most cuddly and protective cats we cared for.

I wish I watched this back when I was a kid; we had a cat that was always biting and scratching people, but we assumed that she was just old and mean. Turns out she had an enlarged heart and most likely was in pain. We didn't find out in time( back then we didn't know the importance of yearly vet visits) and she died. Paying attention to your cats is so, so important.

I have had a cat for about 5 years now. He used to be super cuddly and loving, but he stopped around the same time that I got another cat 2 years ago. I sort of assumed that he just didn't like the new cat. After your part 1 video, I looked at his mouth and noticed he had some strange looking teeth and he hissed at me when I looked(something he has never done in his entire life). I took him to the vet and he just had 5 of his back teeth removed. It's been a week and he's suddenly like his loving old self again. Thank you for giving me the advice of having him checked out.

I got one of my cats when she was 3 months and jumped from a bridge. The vet I went said that It would be too expensive and painfull to do a surgery to fix her fractures. She had two (back paw and hip). They were already calcifying and he said that she would grow and walk just fine once the pain passed.
At that time she was obviously an impossible cat to pet too. She bited and scrathed anyone who approched, myself included. But I gave her the time and meds to get ok.
1 year later she's so much better, meows and plays a lot, lay down with me.
She can walk and run just fine, but the paw that she broke is deformed. Her toes are diferent, with more space between them. And I noticed that one of her nails always grows like this, hurting her paw pad. I have to trim more often because of that.
In general I think she's doing fine and it's more social every day. It was a difficult process especially for her, but totally worth It taking care of her.

My sister's cat was aggressive and upset a lot and peeing outside his litter box - he had bladder stones (or "sand") due to complications post-neutering and it shows why it's very important to notify a vet if your cat is having strange litter box behavior. After they gave us instructions on how to mitigate the issue and something to make it easier to pass the sand his personality completely changed for the better.
If you ever do an episode on chronic pain conditions that would be awesome... my cat has luxating patella (trick knees) and it's not severe enough to require surgery (yet, anyway) but I've never really had a sufficient explanation about why it's a problem (beyond risk of dislocation) and how to avoid it getting worse.

Thank you for this video! This is very important, many times cat owners are clueless as to why their cat is behaving weirdly. Understanding and noticing behavioural changes is vital in ensuring the well-being of our pets. Two years ago I noticed my cat suddenly went under a table in the breadloaf position and did not move or show any interest in food. We took him to our vet the next morning and he had a broken tooth! He was immediately his old self after getting his tooth fixed. He could've gotten much worse if we didn't react so quickly, so I'm happy these videos help people to understand that almost always if a cat's behaviour is off, there can be pain involved.

I very much appreciate your videos. You are always very informative and have a wonderful calm energy. If I lived in Vancouver I’d have you as my vet. I’m in Australia so it’s a bit far. Lol. Thanks again.

So the big take away is: If your cat's personality changes, see your vet! Great video, thank you! :)

My cat, Luciel, was semi feral when we got her. With a little bit of time and effort, she eventually began to not mind head scratches. We've now found out it's just her personality to not like being touched a lot, but she's still the sweetest, most loving cat I could've ever wished for.

When my cat was young, she was very aggressiv. It turned out she has spinal arthritis. Today she is very cuddly and loves to be pet. Thanks to all vets out there, you are heroes!

I love your cat videos!! Ours is a seven year old (almost 8) female Manx calico. We learned early on that they can be moody! She has always been prone to hair balls and even blockages but the most troubling was last summer she stopped eating and the vets couldn’t figure out why. After two long stays in the vet hospital, they finally discovered she’d had changes in her hips. Arthritis. She’s been on meloxyn once a day since and had a change of food to help her. It took several months but now she is so calm and even more loving and is jumping up to her fave spots again to look out windows etc. I’m glad they found out (we all said she looked like she was limping and in pain and were disappointed they didn’t find the cause sooner) as she is happy again now. Thank you for educating us. It really helps!!! We think of her as an older cat now and are very gentle with her. Some of your tips have helped! I got her a higher dish set after hearing one of your tips. Thank you again!!

Thank you for explaining how to notice (chronic) pain in cats and common causes. I wish I'd known about this stuff 20 years earlier when my grandma's cat hat a few bad teeth and got all cranky because of it. Once the cause was found all was well again. But it took us way too long to find what was wrong. Could have saved little Pete a lot of misery.

Wonderful video. I'm using these to educate my family about interacting with our aging cats. The mat issue of chronic pain is something that I think effects my long-haired cat a lot. We're thinking of shaving his pants and belly to treat this.
Also, Mr. Pirate has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen.
