I grew up near a hill just off of the hi-way. I remember being lulled to sleep, listening to the old rigs traveling up and down that hill. Sweet dreams.
Lol that’s awesome and brought back memories. When I was a kid in the early 70s, my school was next to a busy road at the top of a hill. All day long I would hear trucks climbing the hill as this GMC did and got to know the unique pitch of the engines. There were regulars like the Mack R model dump trucks from FO Day, Brockway cement trucks from Maloney Concrete and a variety of local delivery trucks. Interstate 70 was a short distance away so we would also see big rigs making their way to the highway. By the sound of the engine you could tell if it was going to be something new and interesting and if they were loaded or empty. It’s amazing I got through 4th and 5th grade. 😅
Same experience here- when I was 10 years old (1964), my friends and I would hang out on the steps of the general store in Dublin N.H. and listen for the different trucks struggling up the hill to the center of our village as they headed westbound on Route 101. By the time they reached the crest, we could see the exhaust stacks pumping out plumes of black smoke before the tops of the cab, then the radiator, and so forth came into view. We'd bet each other whether or not that truck was a Mack, or Autocar, or GMC or Kenworth by listening to the engines. We'd be wrong half the time, but the Detroit Diesel was a sure giveaway for any GMC!
It brings a tear to my eye every time I watch this. I grew up with these old 6-71's and there's nothing like them. I laughed out loud the first time I saw this b/c of the minivan. I am building a GMC Brigadier "rail buggy" with a turbo 6-71n right now and I will be posting pics soon. Hope you might like. thanks for you video!

I remember a guy down the street had a red GMC just like that my dad had a old Transtar both had double brasted yamaha's & by coincidence i was a kid with my dad in Baltimore,Md we both loaded domino's sugar going back to indiana. We only waved at the other driver when passing his place untill then. They road & talked all day & night on the radio running backroads mostly because then half country was 80,000 other half was 73,280 and both was over 80K for sure. I'll never forget laying in the bunk of that transtar with both stacks screaming pulling hill's over loaded to beat hell. The radio turned up as loud as it would go laying over top of that Detroit thinking man someday that'll be me up there. By the time i made it the old Detroit's were pretty far & few between only guys still running them were trying there best to get out of them mostly because of the oil cost (lol) Thanks for taking me back. Trucking was another time back then. Hell when everybody was screaming on the radio years ago "truckdriver's are a dying breed" i didn't know they were talking about me & the other handful or 2 of truckdriver's left out here just trying to make it to the end. I remember ALL truckdriver's had a bottle of real pills & a big chunk of chicken feed my pop woul cut a chunk off and throw in his coeffe cup and ride all day and night. Hell everybody knew what was going on & every truckdriver was running at least 2 log books. Trucking was a proud profession then. They were the last American cowboy not a druggy. Thanx again for taking me back when all the big trucks had truckdrivers in them not steering wheel holders
Lived That Sound for Years. Pulling %9 Grades 15MPH Tugging 8,800 Gallons of Gas behind us. TWO 3" "COP-CALLER" Stacks climbing the back of the Bunk. No interior insulation, Dust vibrating on The tin floor like popcorn. Flames heaving out both Stacks!.....Miss It.

If I had a cell phone,that would the world's most BAD ASS RING TONE!!! Doesn't sound like a lawn mower OR a goddamned vacuum cleaner.Just plain old good.
when i was about 5yr old my uncle gave me a ride in his crackerbox and i thought i was on top of the world the thing was so high. that was the day i wanted to become a driver and as soon as i was able, i got my license and for 35yr i was proud to be a driver. millions of accident free miles and was a fun time, todays trucking is just not for me anymore, to many wannabe drivers that want to be home everyday. wish they had some gonads and would be a driver like we all use to be, be gone most of the week or stay out as long as you want, no that is driving
Well the log truckers may get home almost everyday, but they are also doing more than normal drivers: stuff like highballin' on dirt roads (in Canada it's now only 105 km/h), hauling 140000 lbs up hills low gear all the way, and given 'er hell to get back home from the mill after 1-2 loads a day.
Literally had the volume all the way up from the last video I watched, and it was so painful that I couldnt even turn the volume down; I was frozen in place lol.
My neighbor had a red and black Crackerbox when I was a kid, I remember pulling the Burns hill with him loaded with sawdust, heading to the charcoal plant,she sounded like a fighter jet,but we we lucky to be doing 15 or 20 Mph!
The best part is it must have been out in the open part of the country where jake brakes aren't taboo, the car at the end of the clip is a cop car with the antenna, but he pulled over to video tape it and share the glorious sound with us on youtube, instead of pulling the guy over for the sound.

I'd be so scared if I was in that van lol yeah my uncle has a couple of 35 ton groves with detroits in them. I used to here them coming through town all the way from our farm haha

I have the same kind of memories, but in my neck of the woods, they were hauling steel out of Weirton, WV and Midland, PA.
