That muffler makes it sound like a boat.
To shift two sticks, you have to get engine RPM exactly right for the vehicle speed, or you will severely grind the gears in both transmissions.

😊 Love the sound of the 2 stroke. But I'm envious watching the 2 stick shifting. Started driving a semi in 1980. Never had the chance to drive a 2 stick. Only drove 1 2 stroke a few times. That was a 6v71, I think.
I took a Diesel mechanics class at a trade school around 1980. Looks like the one a guy built there.

Have to say even if it didn't have the Detroit that truck is interesting due to it's clean body. 👍
Be interesting to know if it will travel at 65 or it still doesn't have enough gears. An old H pattern Clark trans, or sevetal other 5 speeds, with that brownie would give double overdrive making it possible to drive faster. Many times the rear axle gears are too low as well. 3.23 would be good but 2.78 would be better for that.

I don't know, but a user commented the main transmission may be a Dana (Spicer) along with a Brownie Hi-Lo (Brown Lipe Aux).
WHY. Just WHY. A 4-53-ya might have a whopping 175 HP. At 3000RPM. Maybe 400ft. lb of torque at the same time. Powerband about as wide as a 1977 YZ125 Yamaha. One must love to shift it-only way to get down or over the road. Old school-but somethings are best left to History.
My 2 cents anyway.
It's alright, lad. To each their own. I think it's an interesting swap, but everyone has a different opinion. 👍
Why? I bet it gets 30 mpg. If he changes the oil regularly that engine will last longer than the truck body. It might be effort to shift but good things take effort and 30 mpg in a 4500 pound vehicle is good. That engine isn't made to rev up to 3k either.
@@crazyoilfieldmechanic3195 30 MPG ? Don't think so pal-Jimmy diesels weren't known for economy. And the governor setting is between 2800 & 3200 RPM-That's where 2 cycle Detroits make their power.
@@stevenrobinson2381 I don't think so pal. I don't know how many you have worked on but 2250 is about the maximum I have ever seen. I've read that some marine applications are as high as 2600 rpm. Every Detroit from 3-53 to 12-92 that I have ever worked on the governor was set at 1900-2000rpm. As far as mileage goes many other TH-camrs have done this swap and said their mileage was 27 to 35 mpg. What they never say is at what speeds they are driving which obviously matters. I know for a FACT from personal experience that a 4bt will absolutely get 30 mpg in a 1/2 ton pickup at 65 mph with the correct trans and rear gears, but a 4bt is obviously not comparable to a 4-53. The 40's and 50's medium duty trucks I have run that had 4-53 engines needed oil more than they did fuel but they were not driving down the hiway.
@@crazyoilfieldmechanic3195 EVERY 8V-71 I ever touched the governor was set between 2600 & 2800 RPM-these engines were in over the road motor coaches.
As far as fuel economy-it is said that a Jimmy 2 cycle would run for an hour off the smell coming off a fuel soaked rag. A 6V-53 would burn between 18 to 20 gallons in an 8 hour period powering a 10,000 gallon Jet A refueler-that BTW pumped @ about 2800 to 3 grand in high gear-Allison 4 speed Auto. At 450 to 600GPM.
My PERSONAL experience.
Does a 3-53 get better fuel mileage than the 454 they most likely swapped out-oh hell yes. But more efficient-NOPE.

I started on a 5x4 back then.
The 3 speed/2 speed hi/lo could be some older factory set up as used in military rigs.
They all had the hi/lo
