    Gorgeous truck!!! The driver made that old Detroit sound like a symphony. That’s talent you can’t hardly find nowadays. Hope truck and driver are still on the road jamming gears.

    I drove a 1973 4070 in 1977 for CLAY HYDER (Auburndale, Fla.). It had a Formula 290, 10 speed SPICER, & 4:30 Rears. Hauled orange juice out, & swingin' meat back. Lotta great memories. Now I'm 71 & wish I could do it all over again. - "Those were the days my friend, we thought would never end" ;-) Steve / W5BIB

      at least americans still have the W900 and 389s, European trucks dont even have a option for a manual transmission if you want.

    • @murdoch9106
      @murdoch9106 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Volvo and I'm pretty sure most if not all still offer manual gearboxes, I know DAF does, and according to a PDF I found for the UK up to FH16 600 atleast offer the manual gearboxes in different setups, above that it seems to be iShift only. But I'm sure you can fit an aftermarket gearbox if you'd like, like an Eaton Fuller perhaps...

      They do offer manual boxes, but its all electronically controlled. I drive a 1994 MAN F90, still uses a fully manual, air split 18 speed. one of the last cool trucks, before all the electronics, and EURO regulations kicked in.

    You are the real deal , these trucks made America great and paved the way for all the technology of more modern rigs. 8v71 one button thirteen speed Jake brake ..there was not too many options back then but this truck had more than most I remember.
    It's great to hear that sound again always liked the international sound cause they used 4"pipe into the muffler and it was a tighter sound wen you wound it up. Oh yeah seat belts were not the norm when this truck was made nor were electric wipers.
    Like the saying goes there are truck drivers and there are people who drive trucks , you are a truck driver.

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Carpenter....."always liked the international sound cause they used 4"pipe into the muffler"..... NOT True. The reason that the 8V71's in the Transtars sounded the way they did/do.... is because for some unexplained reason, they used "center outlet" manifolds on them, and they also used the 4" pipes on the 4070B with the V12, which is why they kept burning the valves in them. International's design team was not too "bright" when it came to engine setups for their trucks sometimes, especially with the Detroits. They did fine with the 6-71 and the 8-71T.
      I had another Owner-Op friend who bought a new 4070A in 1972.... and didn't mind how it ran, but intensely disliked the tinny sound of it, so I switch exhaust manifolds for him and the exhaust system, also replaced the single 5" air intake system with a split ("Y") intake on the blower from a Pete conventional with 7" pipes to the blower as well as twin intake stacks and filter boxes with 8" pipes and "scoops" from the top of the cab, then switched out the N60 injectors (290hp) for Green Tag N80s, advanced the timing 2 degrees and reset the governor to 2,450 with 5" exhaust into Riker "mufflers" resulting in 458 hp in direct (of course) at 2,380 rpm, and picked up nearly 1.2 mpg.
      International was "infamous" for "choking" the Detroits using small air intake systems and both small Intake and Exhaust on the V12s and burning the valves.... unless someone was smart enough to open them up and let them breathe.

    • @andrewking9761
      @andrewking9761 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      2 Stroke Diesel Power By advancing the timing 2 degrees I guess that gives a fraction more time for combustion to occur counter the extra air and bigger injector size. The 8V71T came out in 1975 I think to keep up with the 350 Cummins

    8v 71. the reason it is so shinny after all these years is that ol' Detroit has been spraying 30w from the headlights to the taillights. fan stat, shutters, double nickel ac (both windows open @55 mph). fuller rto9513 trans. that one looks like it has power steering. some of the earlier 4000 cab overs and 4070A's had center point steering (no power steering). "keep on truckin"

      They were like old Harley's and Triumph's, they marked their spot. Pour a gallon in them and a gallon on them and keep on truckin!

      It was probably preserved by the oil leaks. Many of the trucks in Guatemala are imported from the used market in the US and Canada.

    Por el sonido parece ser un motor Caterpillar. Yo manejé un freightliner año 1981 con motor cummins 350 small cam y el sonido era totalmente diferente. Que recuerdos!!! Vivi cada kilometro que recorri. Que bonito ver un video de Guatemala. Saludos desde Quetzaltenango.

    Slam your fingers in the door while getting in the cab, then drive it like you're mad at it. That's about the best way to run those jimmy diesels.

    • @lawrencefure2102

      They had a real high torque curve. If you let the engine drop below 1800rpm they would go down on their knees. A lot of old time truck drivers used to call the Detroit diesel Yamahas, because of they were a two stroke engine like the motorcycles.

    • @Charles77598
      @Charles77598 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We only had one Detroit, the rest were 350 cummins. But once in a while on a short run I would take it for the experience.

    • @lawrencefure2102

      I bet it used a gallon of oil during that trip. They were notorious for leaking oil.
