Every time I hear that somebody hasn't heard this snarky puppy joint and the CH solo, I just smile from ear to ear like its Christmas.
My sons and his friends only know 'Rap Music'. Without being judgemental or condescending, we have to somewhat relate. I'm most likely older as I'll be 63 in two months, so I grew up listening to R&B and Rock music of the day which is now called 'Classic Rock'. I can only imagine what parents of the day thought of our music. They will outgrow that (hopefully) one day and appreciate musicians playing real instruments. I made them listen to this on some high end audio equipment literally sounding as if you were in that room!! Blew their minds....!! Peace from the SF Bay Cali.

Newsflash, I grew up listening to the pioneers of 'Rap Music' i.e. DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, the Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Jam Master Jay and Run-DMC and enjoyed it at that time in my life. 2 fun thing i learned about this recording. The drummer Larnell Lewis learned this entire set on the flight over and the other keyboard player who is so impressed and can't handle it is Shaun Martin, 4-times Grammy winner :D. If you get a guy like that to lose it... :D

I think this dude needs to watch it again and focus on Cory's solo a little more. He was a lil too caught up in Larnell's masterful drumming. Then again, that's the beauty of Snarky Puppy. Every member are world class wizards!
@@pastense For real, Larnell is insane as always, but Cory's solo was just other-worldly; it's honestly game-changing. The vocabulary, the fluidity, the arc, the strangeness but immediate understandability of it. I'd never heard anything like it before. There are a few moments I can think of that changed my perspective on music totally, and this was definitely one of them.
@@myactualfullname It's a little weird for me to see people talking about how unique the key solo was, for me its like a nostalgia bomb for some of the tracks off of the OST for the ps2 video game "Star Ocean: Till the End of Time" th-cam.com/video/MgMXWnWH1TA/w-d-xo.html is one of the specific tracks. th-cam.com/video/3oTlX6NhDGQ/w-d-xo.html this is another one that has key moments I was reminded of. Mind the skill level between that video game music and Cory's solo here are night and day

that electronic "pop" sound you heard in the beggining of the song is actually that snare with the cymbal on it.
Lingus is just insane, the bass drum pattern is from afrocuban percussion rumba clave 3/2… he plays:
1 and of 2, first and second bar
the third and 4th bar he plays a complete rumba clave:
1 and of 2 and of 4 // 2, 3…
does this pattern 3 times and then the fourth time he does 2 full rumba claves…

I don't know if someone has made this comment yet, but: the reason Shaun Martin is "pecking" with one finger of each hand is probably (most likely) due to that Moog keyboard is probably in mono-synth mode. He doesn't want two fingers to be simultaneously hitting two keys at the same time (which is hard to avoid playing with one hand), essentially cutting of the first note and losing the initial attack for the next note. They want that bass line as staccato as possible.

I Actually like playing in mono because you can rip up the keyboard without stepping on yourself too much. The old moog voice is one of my favorites.

I just LOVE your reaction to Lingus, bro. I could FEEL the fun you were having listening/watching it!!! That just made the experience of your reaction more "real" for me. MAde me feel like I was there with you. And I've listened to Lingus more times than I can remember!!! Yet EVERYTIME I watch a reaction video it's like hearing it for the first time. Snarky Puppy is a GREAT modern band/orchestra!!!!!!
Excellent theme, incredible musicians, they all work super well together, everything is very well paced, the sound is very well focused. And with all due respect, the beast that plays the drums possibly instead of a heart has a metronome and a little hydraulic oil in his blood, I think that in his genetic code he has octopus chromosomes too, amazing, congratulatios for all.

I am so happy....all of you musicians were BORN, I really do. I love you guy's parents, for birthing such amazing musician specialists into this mundane world of hell. Life became tolerable from just experiencing this intricate musicianship and master class contribution. I don't understand why music does to the brain and spirit as it does. But I NEED it and can't balance out my life without it. It's another language another form of LOVING someone if thee creators want it to be. For my mental health.....please stay safe and healthy.
I think it's also incredible how Larnell Lewis was able to be visible even during one of the most outstanding keys solos of all time...
The keyboard solo section is in 4/4. The solo is total improv. There are other takes of this tune out there where Cory plays something completely different, and almost as amazing.
Larnell played the splash cymbal on the tom right at the beginning.

Go back and watch the reactions of the sound engineers in the sound booth, way at the back of the room. They hopping all over the place knowing that they are witnessing musicians on an improvisational plane of ultra-reality..
From what I've been able to gather, their solos are structed in their positioning, and improvisational beyond that. Incredible cats, man.
Yes, the solos are improvised. There's a chord progression, and they just improvise in those chords. If you listen to the bass (playing the same rhythms as the bass drum) during Cory Henry's keyboard solo, you can hear the chord changes and the repeating 8-bar chord progression. If you bother to count, he solos through 19 cycles of that 8-bar pattern. If you watch, you can see him look over to Larnell on the drums during the last one and nod to him. That's the signal that he's done and it's time for Larnell to bring in the rest of the band. I don't think it was written that way; I think that it was written for him to just go as long as he wants, then the rest of the band comes in when he's done. Larnell signals them and they come in on cue.
Back in the day, I used to play a bit of jazz (big band and small combo stuff) and we had a few tunes with long solo sections like this one. The rhythm section would just keep going, playing that same repeating chord progression until the soloist or conductor decided it was enough, then they would signal the rest of the band and everyone else would come in and continue on.
@@farmkidspm Actually the chord progression is also improvised by Cory on his left hand and the bass along with the backing keyboards are only repeating a bassline.

11:31 Corey is telling someone, probably Larnell or Michael, that he's done with the lead and is ready for the band to come back in. Also, did you catch Corey was playing the shred parts with _both_ hands? It's beyond difficult what he did. Remember, the hands are mirrored; so when it played the thumb in one hand, he was playing the pinky in the other. I had to stop the first time I saw that, take a breath, back it up about 20 seconds, and press on. Finally, did you notice the pause right before the shred part started? It was like, "OK, take a deep breath. Here... we... go!" 😀

The cymbal on the snare is that sick slap/clap snare sound for the couple beginning grooves.
He used the splash on the drum in the beginning when the drums first come in.
so the time signature for the "chorus" is 5/4 i believe and then it switches over to 4/4 unless its a different time that seems like 4/4

In my opinion. The horns are def influenced by Herbie's Head Hunters and probably a bunch of other stuff I've never heard.
As a drummer and a keyboard player myself, it’s really weird watching non drummers react to a syncopated but simple kick pattern and be so focused on that that what CH is doing on keys just blows by. Larnell is great but don’t forget that Nate is supplementing over on percussion but you mostly don’t see him while you do see Larnell. So some of what you hear is not Larnell and a lot of Lingus reaction videos get caught up in that and don’t even notice that Cory is just ripping the roof off even on the little things like his pitch bends. OMG, do people realize how hard it is to just trigger those pitch bends so perfectly on the fly for a split second then move the left hand back down to resume your comping?
To me, the snare/cymbal combo sounds like either a really sharp snare or a really dull cymbal. It definitely different! I love Bill Laurence doubling the kick drum on the piano 😊
If you want to hear what it sounds like, listen to Shofukan. He uses it throughout the song and it's very prominent in the solo. Nate Werth (percussion) also has one.

SOme folks don't know this is a crafted solo, played in the moment.

AND I'm going to be doing more of the old stuff too, because I just found out about DL this year, and haven't gone backwards to the old stuff yet.

So, I love watching people react to songs I grew up with, because I can never relive that personally but can experience it vicariously. Then I stumble on this miserable looking dude with headphones OVER TOP OF A HOODIE and watch him react to a random band I've never heard of, and BAM, I am right there with him reacting to Snarky Puppy for the first time. So thank you dark dude ima have to subscribe and see how far you're willing to traverse the universe of progressive music.

Your attention given to drummer Larnell Lewis is justified. Lewis learned the chart on the plane on his way to the gig. This is the first time he played any of this.
Regarding your question on 12:20 about God Larnell his drums setup...that chrash cymbal on snare drum on the left side is "his work" that he use from time to time... and wondering that you didn't hear it all the time due the intro grow (at about 0:45)...that specific short snare-metal combination peek...just perfect chosen "weapon"😉... proposal: do not make so much stops in your reactions, you "kill" the magic of that masterpiece... Especially few times in the middle of Corys epic keys solo...
Pro: I think it very interesting that you hear to background to all speciality gimmicks from Larnell 👍

Well in fact I have seen this band live multiple times and can confirm they did not play a solo twice. Funny you touched meeting them personally since I actually met twice with Michael League (writer of this song). Nice fact: he even signed my basguitar. But that does indeed not say anything about the way people take a solo ;)
The question to the letter was 'are soli's written out' and in this particular song the answer is factually no. Not only are there dozens of live recordings on youtube of this song and of Snarky Puppy proving my point, the official sheet music provided and sold by the band itself shows no sign of writing out solo's whatsoever.
Ofcourse a solo is never a 100÷ unique, there are only 12 notes to play and it is pretty much impossible to play lines that have never been played before at all. (at least in western equal temperement tuning)
But your comment actually shows exactly the thing you accuse me of doing. These musicians are all individually very developed players, they don't need written out solo's. And even if you give them a written out part, they will play it different every time.
By saying they do not write out solo's I praise these players and do not over or under estimate their skills and this is actually quite the opposite of what you accuse me of doing...
No bad intentions meant, just respecting the music and the people making it ;)
