    To me, Snarky Puppy is the epitome of what can be accomplished with music. As a bassist, I love the FAT, heavy grooves these guys lay down. But man, the drums, the guitars, the horns...I can't say that I love any one part of their music more than any other. Each piece of music is like a sip of a full-bodied, complex wine that I can't put down. Each melody, each groove swirls in my gray matter, caressing every fold and wrinkle, lighting up every neuron. This isn't some kind of high -- I feel deeply ALIVE when I listen to Lingus or any of their other recordings.

      I ain't mad but, Al Jarreau wrote some shit about a garden that was inspired by a Steely Dan song that fed this beast.
      It's no less a master stroke than any of its inspirations.

      Larnell is amazing, without a doubt, but *all* of the Snarky drummers are great, too! Sput's command behind the kit goes without saying, and then you have JT and Jamison who are great in their own way, too. I got to see the Pups just a couple of nights ago and they had Jamison on the kit and he was on fire! I just can't get enough of any lineup that is put together. Every single musician is a masterclass level, so no matter which bunch you get to see on any given night, you're going to be in for a good time!

      Corey is a prodigy pianist, but I believe Larnell tips Corey off as to what direction to go with in his solo. Because when the keyboard solo begins, Corey is trying to find his "voice" and Larnell's light rim knocks sets the tone. Worth a listen to that spot.

    The bassist is Michael League, and yes he is the band leader. The most mind-boggling about this though, is that the drummer (Larnell Lewis) learnt the music on the plane to Europe, and literally just had a couple of hours between arriving in the studio and doing the stuff you see in the video - as well as the rest of the album. (The original drummer had to drop out when he realized he had no valid passport).

  • @XViTNg
    @XViTNg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The way that main riff drags sooooo slowwwwly that it’s actually a poly rhythm and not just dragging. Is just such an amazing vibe. And your head nods with the beat and the drag is so much so that since it’s a poly rhythm it doesn’t confuse the normal non musician listener. This song sounds good to everyone snd not just a song for musicians (obviously we hear what they don’t. But they can still listen and just be utterly moved). Sometimes these types of virtuoso bands only sound good to musicians who hear all the nuance. But Michael knows how to write just generally great music while still giving us music nerds tons of stuff to just feel like oh my god. Love this whole entire set.

    Michael League (bass) is the driving force behind Snarky Puppy which was formed at the University of North Texas (formerly North Texas State), a mecca for jazz musicians for literally decades.
    The drummer, Larnell Lewis, was a substitute for their regular drummer (who didn’t get his passport squared away in time), so Larnell learned nearly the entire set ON THE PLANE RIDE OVER and NAILED it. I believe one of the tracks (Sleeper) was composed at the recording venue (in the Netherlands).
    The melody for “Lingus” is in a ponderously slow 5/4 and the ‘middle section’ is also in 5, but twice as fast as the melody; ML said at a live performance this is Snarky’s version of ‘dub step’.
    All the audience is on Silent Disco bluetooth headphones connected to the mixing board main output.

    During the keyboard solo, there's actually an 8-bar chord progression. If you listen to the notes the keyboard and bass are playing, it's a repeating pattern over 8 bars, with the rhythm slightly altered on the last bar. Just FYI, Cory's solo goes through 19 rounds of that (152 bars) when he signals Larnell that he's done and to bring in everyone else.

    You speak my language, man. Around 5:10 these two solos in particular always remind me of Breaker Bros. Something to do with the effects, but there also seems to be some emulation going on as well. The part that always gets me the most is when Cory plays those fast lines doubled on both hands. God, I want that kind of control on keys.

Here in Brazil I know several guys who like this kind of sound like Justin Lee Schultz, Jacob Collier, in addition to the classics like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Frank Gambale and others. I would like to make a suggestion, I don't know if you know this band, it's called Spok Frevo, it's a Frevo band, a Brazilian rhythm, like you've never seen ! They are called "Brazilian jazz" and they play very well! A big hug

    Thanks for the recognition… I have LOVED this ensemble for years. The thing that really sets them apart, I think, is that the group is large enough to record without any overdubbing.
    I mean, yeah, there are tweaks in the final product we listen to, but if it wasn’t there, at that time, you don’t hear it.
    The best description I have for them after all these years is ‘COMPLETE’… period!
    Also, there are always horn section breaks that bring me back to being a kid, lying on the floor and watching “Route 66”…. and the incredible theme, composed by Nelson Riddle (at his finest!).

    the most amazing part of this performance, for me at least, is, as a drummer myself, Larnell Lewis learned the songs during the flight over, no sheet music. he learned it by mentally marking out musical cues. I've been playing since 1980, never took lessons, completely self taught, and that is the same way I learn songs. I can listen to a song a couple times and then set down at the kit and pretty much nail it.

    • @StrateleStudios
      @StrateleStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is so mind blowing about Larnell. What a talent. That practical learning you did to train your ear and visualize how to play a song in your head is invaluable!

      @@StrateleStudios Check out the series of videos he did where he sits down and listens to a song he's never heard before, and then goes on to play it. While he doesn't nail them 100% he does a lot better than many of the working cover bands you see in busy clubs in the big city

    If you look back over the older videos of SP live - like the gritty audience iPhone stuff - this performance always feels to me like the culmination of many years solo building. Shaun Martin and Cory would ‘dual’ the key solos and Shaun could often be heard saying to Cory “take your time, take your time” as he was inclined to throw everything at it straight away. The first time I saw this version of Lingus, I thought ‘ok Shaun, he is really gonna take his time with this one,’ to the point of hilarity, and Shaun unable to hold in his laughter.
