Snarky Puppy is jazz/jazz fusion/rock and funk. They have won four Grammy Awards. Glad you enjoyed this. I always tell people who hear this for the first time that moving forward they will always listen to music and think in terms of pre-Lingus and post-Lingus. This just scratches the surface. Larnell Lewis on drums, Cory Henry on keys, Michael Leauge on bass (he also wrote the song and started Snarky Puppy) are all top tier musicians. One of the best comments I’ve heard is when you said that you could feel your credit score going up while listening to this. Your musical journey is a beautiful thing to see. There’s much more for you to experience. That was 🔥

I can actually attest to this. I can't remember what made me ask for Jazz music recommendations, but someone recommended Snarky Puppy and since then my love for live instruments went off the charts. Then I had my Zildjian Live era, and I found other electronic-jazz fusion artistes like Birocratic and FKJ, and I've visited some old classics like Quincy Jones, Ron Kenoly, and Lou Rawls ... I would have never imagined that I'd fall in love so much with the oldies too, but here I am, they're masterpieces! (For extra context: I used to be, and still am, a Rock Music and EDM fan)

Welcome to the juicy world of jazz. You have to know your stuff if you're a jazz musician. You're not background participants, you're front and center, major, not minor. No distractions of singers or lyrics, although jazz music sounds like a unique language unto itself, full of emotions and meaning. They're all just so amazing. The keyboard player who anchors the timing during Cory's solo is Justin, he wrote Outlier, home of the virtuoso sax of Bob Reynolds. Justin also plays trumpet.
The tall chap on trumpet in Lingus is Maz, he wrote sleeper - the home of Shaun, who commands the entire song on the keyboard/voicebox. Shaun has almost as many Grammys on his own as the whole of Snarky Puppy.
Listen to The Curtain to hear a world - class solo from Jay (Flugel horn) , Cory (keyboard again), Michael (bass) and an extraordinary performance on piano by Bill Laurance.

The drummer.. to learn that song on a plane and play it perfectly the next day. crazy. He's done other videos with a first listen and then plays it perfectly (even metal). I would have loved to be in that room.
You HAVE to do a reaction to Shofukan. The brass solo is so good it hypnotizes the cellist in real time. She looks dreamy. It's one of the best moments in music ever.

Yeah, you wouldn't know it from this song, but Shawn Martin - every musician here - is at the absolute top. Across this whole album, it's such a delight to see them supporting and enjoying each other's music. Shawn was so happy for Corey at the end of this song because they all knew he'd just played one of the greatest jazz solos of all time. There's another clip from the documentary about this album where Shawn tips Larnell Lewis a $20 after a solo just laughing because it was so good. The fact that Larnell learned these songs on the plane by listening to the ban rehearse with a click track and then walked directly from the airport into the studio and played this is so mind bogglingly epic.
Fun story about Shawn. SP did a show in Syracuse, NY a few years ago. It was mind-blowing, hands down the best group of musicians I have ever seen. This was my first time seeing them as well after becoming a fan a few years prior. They are nuts, nuff said. After the show I was walking back to the car, and I ran into Shawn around the block smoking a cigarette, hanging out. He was the nicest dude, super chill and seemed like he didn't mind chatting with us at all. I told him it was the best show I had ever seen, and that he shredded the Sleeper solo better than the recording, which he did. I was still in high school, and he told me that they were going down to Funk 'n Waffles (waffle restaurant/music venue, one of the city's gems) to jam and hang out. I told him I had a final the next day so I had to go cram for it, and he wished me good luck and shook my hand. I did well on the final and I think his luck helped some because I wasn't particularly prepared. Long story short or tl;dr, Shawn Martin is a cool ass dude.

FACTS!!!!!!!!!! - Great observation. Tbh, I'd include Shawn Martin and of course Michael League. I mean, Shawn by himself has won how many Grammys. And Michael League puts their musical anamolies together.
See them live. It’s a crazy vibe and atmosphere. Everyone “singing” along, dancing, clapping, I’ve never felt so connected to a band on stage. They are truly incredible performers who make you feel like they’re loving every second and you’re part of it. It’s so much fun.
This reminds me of the ‘70’s group Passport and their album “Cross Collateral”, a vinyl disc that I played all of the time while in high school with notions of becoming a professional musician specifically in the jazz or fusion or electronic keyboards…. This performance made me smile inside and out. Great job and great filming everybody., thanks to my local jazz station in the US, KNKX, in the Seattle-Tacoma area which I listen to in Bellingham and also currently while doing research here in Belgium and throughout Europe.

If I remember right, this was the band's third take and Larnell's first take. The first times with the original drummer it just wasn't clicking, but the drummer had trouble with his passport on route to the artist collective where this was shot and Larnell had to be flown in last minute. The chemistry between them all is amazing, and you can see how well Cory Henry and Larnell Lewis are locked in.

First off, I gotta say, bro, I LOVE your voice! You've got a radio voice for sure. Being a huge fan of Snarky Puppy, I'm really glad that you got your ears "opened" to this group of musicians. Also, I don't believe that ANYONE would expect it to be neccesary for you to apologize for stopping and commenting. In my opinion, you stop at appropriate points AND would have to thought to pull things back a little so that we can "stay" with the groove. Your channel just popped up on this and I have subscribed. I'm truly looking forward to your future reviews/commentary on Snarky Puppy. I personally think that Corey Henry's solo work on Lingus is HISTORICAL!!!! And Shawn Martin (the other keyboardist who got "full" and walked off) is (I think) is a 5 time grammy award winner. So for him to become overwhelmed by Corey's solo is saying something!!!
Great comment and I would second the opinion that Corey Henry's solo is historical, with damn near perfect flow in his melodic ideas and slow build up to a scorching finale and his technical abilities are simply insane. There are videos now on TH-cam with musicians breaking down his solo and I think one even has a transcription. I've been a keyboardist since I was a kid (MANY years ago), with a history of playing in multiple bands in various genres, and I can honestly tell you that the first time I heard his solo I must have looked like I was in a trance with my mouth open and mumbling incoherently. 😆 Another thing that struck me on the first listen was the way all the horns were playing the melody line in the first segment of the song just behind the beat in perfect unison (the sax and trumpet solos were also killer).

I just saw this video on my list of recommended videos and I knew I had to watch it immediately because first time reactions to this insanely talented band never get old! I'm sure you thought that you would be listening to straight-ahead "old school" jazz with a swing beat when you read the comment describing Snarky Puppy as a jazz band, but whoever wrote that obviously forgot to mention, or is oblivious, to all their other influences, including funk, rock, soul and R&B. The first time I heard this, I was also blown away by their technical ability and the killer groove and solos, along with the fantastic writing and arrangement. I've been a keyboardist since I was a kid and during the entire synth solo by Cory Henry my mouth was open, my eyes were glazed over and I think I was mumbling something like "not possible...not possible...". 😁 I swear that the drummer, Larnell Lewis, must have a metronome implanted in his head because his his killer groove is so damn solid and as you alluded to, he learned the song on the flight to the Netherlands and then proceeded to play like it like he's known it for years, which is F-ing amazing!
I forgot to mention that when I initially heard the song, the first thing I noticed (other than than the killer groove) was the way all the horn players were playing the melody line just behind the beat in perfect unison, which I absolutely LOVE and it really shows how much talent and feel they have. BTW, I love your reaction videos because of your willingness to listen to styles of music which you have not previously listen to along with your interesting insights into the songs and honest opinions.
No, I believe Larnell did _not_ learn Lingus on the flight to the Netherlands. I believe Lingus was one of the two he'd 'learned' before he boarded the 'plane, but I can't find that video.

Not to detract from Larnell. He's amazing anyway. He wasn't memorising existing drum parts, he was composing them. Further, they rehearsed by day, and recorded in the evening across 4 days, I guess two songs per day. Snarky Puppy had to learn Larnell's drum part.

Some keen observations from someone who (I'm guessing) is not a musician and certainly not a jazz person. They keyboard solo was completely improvised. They ran the song through several times and each solo was completely different. Credit score. I love it.

You should check out Larnell Lewis(the drummer) on Zildjian Live. It is an amazing performance.
The cool thing about this is not just what individual instruments are doing (which is amazing) but how they are interacting with each other also. How the bass player and drummer are locking on together, how the horns are responding to each other, or how the keys and guitars are echoing each others melodies, etc.
Snarky Puppy is pure musical joy.
We're lucky, we get to say we were alive on earth at the same time as Cory Henry and Larnell Lewis - and all of them to be fair but those two in particular on this one. The rest of them are just great. "Only" great. But what Lewis pulls off there, learning the whole set (not just this number) in the time it takes to fly from the US to Holland. And he's a beast. And then Cory Henry creates / plays / composes one of THE great solos. The construction, the pacing, the phrasing, the way he nods to Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder and - you name it there's a little bit of it in there and a LOT of Cory Henry it is glorious. It's worth listening to the rest of the concert and realising this is the finale of a concert where all the other music is on almost the same level and they can just push it that tiny bit more to get to Lingus. It's transcendent. It crosses - boundaries, genres - are left in a tiny puddle of whatever - we get to share the planet with these guys. We are so lucky long may they continue.

If you like drummers, check out Billy Cobham, Lenny White, and Nrada Micheal Walden. Cobham and Walden played with one of the original jazz fusion bands, Mahavishna Orchestra. Seriously heavyweight musicians. Lenny White played with another great jazz fusion band, Return to Forever, featuring, for me, some of the greatest musicians of their time. Check out Romantic Warrior. Both of these groups were way, way, before their time and they defined the jazz fusion genre

I'm going to be a bit snarky and point out that the "something about the sound of the trumpet that's so powerful" is literally the sound of the trumpet lol. It's powerful!
I love the music you've been reacting to and look forward to the nooks and crannies you end up exploring. I think if you're drawn to drummers, you should get around to some of Aric Improta's videos on TH-cam. Also hope to see more of the Beatbox competitions from 2017-2019. In a lot of bands the drummer keeps time for the rest of the band and is really the focal point the cues everyone else when they're supposed to go in this song that bassist drives the whole thing dudes amazing

Probably been mentioned already but Larnell Lewis learned all the material on an Air Lingus flight on the way over to this gig, it was overseas I forget where. He has an awesome video on drumeo where he talks about his active listening techniques. Listens to a chick corea song once and then proceeds to demolish it in one take. It’s pretty astounding
No. Maybe most misquoted 'music fact' on TH-cam. On that Drumeo video, in the first minute or so, Larnell explains that he _already knew_ 2 of the songs before he got on the transatlantic flight to the Netherlands. Not to detract from Larnell. He's amazing anyway. He wasn't memorising existing drum parts, he was composing them.Further, they rehearsed by day, and recorded in the evening across 4 days, I guess two songs per day. Snarky Puppy had to learn Larnell's drum part.
I believe Lingus was one he'd 'learned' before he boarded the 'plane, but I can't find that video, so I may be wrong. Also, if you watch the Drumeo video carefully, he listened at least twice, not once. The song was called "Chick's Pain".
