I remember around 2012 as a kid that Firefox was just wayyyyy faster than anything else at the time. Never had any issues with it and I'm just comfortable with it as my browser to this day.

Firefox also has profiles, not just containers. Containers are specifically for segregating different tabs so that they are unable to share certain things like cookies. Profiles work just like Chrome, where multiple profiles are completely separate from each other. The issue with Firefox profiles is that they are a little hidden for standard users.

    • @ComputerWhiz_

@@busimagen I agree. Profile switching should be a more prominent feature. I like the way it's done on MS Edge.

I have to say that containers and PWAs are enough for me - I don't miss profiles at all. I have installed a blank web page as a PWA for each of my kids so that they can have their own browsing experience. This is working great so far. Kind of having a cheap Chromebook 🙂

8:06 Remember: MOZILLA wanted Canonical to change it to the Snap, not Canonical by themselves, so Mozilla is to blame for that, as that representation of Firefox is what *they* intend Firefox to be like, THEIR own intention, not Canonical's sole intention.

    • @xahal

I don't think that's true. Canonical is switching plenty of apps to snap.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of Mozilla engineers aren't happy about this, and Canonical wasn't "forced" to make the change. They both pushed for it.

I think it pretty much comes down to that there really is no reason to use Firefox over other browsers like Chrome for most people. And because Firefox isn't the default browser on any mainstream OS. And it doesn't help that many people are ingrained in Google or Microsoft services.

"No reason" for people who like to bury their head in the sand and believe that anything that doesn't immediately affect them personally, is not real. If you don't go to vote, you believe there is or should be no such thing as a general public, and you care about nothing in the world but your own little life, then yes - there's no reason to use Firefox.

I think a browser is something you'll engage with so much and so frequently that even minor inconveniences can push someone away from one; and once you've found something that works, you won't really bother to look for an alternative.
If you've poured your heart and soul into something you have all the right to be proud of it, but you need to be conscious about praising something on an aspect that others would consider the bare minimum (like being able to use FF as your main browser).

  • @BurnsidesAP

I used FF as my browser at home and at work until last week. I still use FF for home use, but I’ve given up on it for work because of the lack of tab grouping. I tried using the simple tab groups extension, but it’s much slower than the experience on Chromium browsers, and the icon is very similar to the containers icon which means I often mis-clicked.
I’ve moved over to Vivaldi. The tab stacking on there is just okay, but the tab tiling is a killer feature for my workflows, and I really missed it when I changed over.

  • @dsEdo

I always used Firefox and being proud of it for their manifesto. I never thought on using edge (I’m even scared by people that use it) and I feel Chrome like the fancy and rich enemy of Firefox.
Anyway, during last years the “ignored by industry” problem is forcing me to use Chrome: I’m a private tutor and the majority of the platforms with features for video calls, live boards etc. have had problems with the mic or webcam… Firefox is become unreliable, and that for me it’s the most important problem.

The "Google applications work better in chrome" is actually one of the reasons I DO use Firefox. MS used to do the same to lock users into IE and making sure that Google knows not everyone uses Chrome and that they might loose out on customers is the only way to incite them to do continue to support other browsers.

5:45 I LOATHE Chrome's interface. It lacks title and menu bars. They can be reenabled in Firefox -- but frankly, disabling them should never have been a thing. Programs must always be consistent with the system-wide standard.

Great video! I honestly never understood Chrome's popularity. People keep telling me they use it because it's the fastest. That hasn't been my experience at all. Firefox has definitely been faster for me, especially on Mac and Linux. Chrome also installed garbage all over the place when I tried it out on my MacBook. Between Firefox and Safari, I don't really run into sites that don't work, so I have no reason to use Chrome.

I am a software engineer/web developer and I used to use FF extensively for the dev tools, but Chrome has come a long way in that regard. Now that I am avoiding all things Google, I use Vivaldi, but I will give FF another deep dive. I have long used it as a secondary browser to keep a separate set of cookies/history etc. I did not know you could do that in Chrome. Doesn't matter now. I remember around 2010 when Chrome came out and my coworkers said to check it out because it was fast and lightweight compared to FF being slow and bloated, but of course that is no longer true.

I used Firefox for many years. There were always annoying issues, but they became more and more. One day I could not take it anymore and switched to VIvaldi - and I dont regret it. What annoyed me the most:
    - Updates! How can that be a good decision to update WHILE you use firefox in a way that stops you from working until you restart the app? No! This is a no-go!
    - Also, I don't care about how the ui looks as long as it is functional. But in many ways firefox kept going for the looks, being "modern" and different. There were default themes, where I couldnt even see, which tab was opened at the moment.
    - When playing media (youtube or whatever) in the background (in sticky tabs), I clicked the mute button much too often when going back to that tab.
    - Bugs that won't be addressed, like the one where when Firefox starts in fullscreen mode, It does, but doesnt. The actual window is full screen, but firefox itself is just about half of the screen size. This was/is on linux and windows for many years, I think even today.
    .
Maybe they addressed many of my issues and even improved on functionality. But what I learned during the time I used Firefox: the next update might (again) break your complete workflow. Firefox/Mozilla won't care!

I've deleted Chromium from my Arch Linux system. Firefox only now. In an amazing coincidence, a lot of frustrating minor and major problems have gone away, including keyboard+mouse freeze-ups, problems with Pipewire, heavy memory usage, and Chromium crashing. No chromium, no Chromium crashes! And X11 crashes, rare, but when it does happen, I'm doing something Chromium. I may have to re-install it eventually to test web apps, but I'll try to containerize it, once I figure out how to containerize things.

WRONG. Firefox DOES have profiles. I dont use them, I stick to one, but it does. They are completely separate. Do your rrsearch before knocking something with a false argument. The firefox profile manager is not well-promoted and that IS a fault. A real major fault is it doesnt well handle multiple monitors running at different resolutions. Safari does. Safari’s tab groups are better but it doesnt do containers (only private windows). Safari doesnt do containers and extensions are more limited. I hate Chrome - it does *everything* differently (like google mail does too). My regular browser is Firefox but I do wish it did multiple monitors better.

I have to say that, after being a long time Google Chrome and then Brave user, I tried Firefox on Fedora 37 and got hooked. No, seriously, it felt fresh and modern and welcoming to me. The extensions feel functional and everything is very flexible. So I started modding/messing around and now have a very sleek, functional and fast browsing experience. Still no problems with websites not working correctly or not supporting Firefox at all - and I use a lot of websites, sometimes Google Docs/Sheets and some other PWAs. But I have to keep it installed as an RPM so that the PWA extension can work correctly. Firefox has come a long way and doesn't have to hide at all.

I liked it that they didn't have all the other microsoft crap they'd incessantly try to force you to use, but the time has come to bite the bullet and move on. I thought I had already commented but maybe I'm wrong.
    In my opinion:
    - Firefox should integrate PWAs and containers without the need of extensions or to enable stuff in about:config.
    - Mozilla should be competitive/an alternative to Google where it can by making new apps or partnering with other companies (e.g. search engine, emails, suites and stuff like that) focusing always on open source.
    - They should focus on meaningful stuff like performance tuning and bug squashing, not unuseful UI updates (I'm using the Lepton mod, I can't stand Proton).

One reason I didn't switch Firefox only, but continued with Chromium and Firefox, is that for watching TH-cam, FF was annoying about changing volume levels at random. Well, not at random, but turning down the volume during a loud ad didn't stick when the video itself started, or when I fast forwarded or backed up to replay part of the video. That problem went away. Not sure it was actually FF's fault. Chromium seems to mess with audio, and I had been using Pipewire during its early phase.

Netflix and other streaming services limit Firefox to 720p. There exists an extension that allows 1080p for Netflix, but only at a low bitrate.

I think the main issue though from my experience is that in day to day usage Firefox doesn't do anything substantially better than preinstalled alternatives.

The whole "Chrome works better with Gsuite" is SUPER annoying because in a lot of cases it's an artificial handicap by Google rather than an actual shortcoming with Firefox itself. There are a lot of cases where the feature actually works perfectly fine on Firefox, Google has just disabled or nerfed the feature on non-Chrome browsers.

  • @EwanMarshall

As a firefox user, I did not know containers had that feature of it's own cookies and such so I never really saw much benefit to them. This is an issue with the way they were advertised when launched IMO.
When doing web development, I actually prefer Firefox dev tools.
Also on that note, I have to target and test IOS safari separately as every single browser on IOS is actually just reskinned safari due to apple's restrictions as far as a web developer viewpoint goes. That section of users gives us no choice, and chrome is most like safari, on any other platform it is possible for the user to switch browser and it work, we have no choice like that on IOS...

I used *Firefox* for years, until I realized, like many I know that they seem to keep fixing what is not broke with each new version....
I have seen this with many application before, that they have a working, and fairly convenient setup, they get a *LOT* of users, *then they start trying to upgrade it to the point where you almost forget why you liked it.*
*Firefox* has been doing this now for a couple of years to the point where it almost feels like *EVERY WEBSITE* is a security risk anymore, so i have dropped it!!

Possibly, it is *'Safer'* perhaps, but the *WEALTH* of things that cause *Firefox* to crash to desktop, is getting ridiculous....
As of yesterday, I cannot even open the *'Bookmark Manager'* windows anymore to search for a bookmark, without it going *Non-responsive* & forcing me to close the browser back to the desktop.
Then there are the attempts to contact *Mozilla* for tech support, which could be called *IMPOSSIBLE* truthfully.
*They just don't care at all anymore!!*

  • @jmssun
    @jmssun ปีที่แล้ว

3:19 profile is so different from containers, and the use case is so very different
Profiles are more like isolated sessions that should be run simultaneously along with each other or closed independently.
Contains in ff are just containerized tabs, not containerized Firefox app
BTW, so wish Tree Style TAB would one day become native, and use more efficient code other than javascript

I've stopped using Firefox and uninstalled it from my computers for the simple fact that it does not work. At one time, it was a serviceable browser. Recently, however, it developed the nasty habit of freezing up in use, and more recently freezing up my entire computer. Resetting defaults, refreshing, uninstalling and reinstalling - none of these tactics resolves the problem. Regular automatic updates never resolve the problem. It freezes on TH-cam, Zoom, Citrix etc., etc., etc.... It does not work with Facebook Live at all, whereas Chrome does. Basically, it's a matter of throwing away a broken tool that no longer works in favor of one that does.

  • @tomonabudget
    @tomonabudget ปีที่แล้ว

Firefox was successful because it was fast compared to the competition.
Now it's the slowest browser out there.
When I worked on a web-app with 3d rendering (BabylonJS), the performance gap difference was so vast that the app would render at nice 60fps in Chrome and was unusable in FF.

I was a Firefox user since it was first launched (and Netscape before that). But after I upgraded my PC to Windows 11, I found that Firefox's memory management seems to trigger Windows 11 File Explorer's notorious memory leak problems. I would launch Firefox or Blender or Adobe Acrobat and even after I exited those programs, File Explorer would grow and grow to over 4 GB at which point it would crash. Chrome seems less prone to triggering this Windows 11 problem.

I don't use Firefox for those reasons.
I didn't use it due to the lack of a synchronizer of bookmarks, later it was included.
For a long time, as a front-end user, I stopped using firefox because of the inspect feature in chrome, which had many resources for me to work with, today I see that firefox already has something similar and improved from what it was before.
Firefox is still behind in HTML5 resources, if you put it in the html5 test you will see that it hasn't included resources yet and that chrome already has them accounting for more resources.
Speed and security for me is indifferent, that's the crucial point because I didn't migrate.
Interestingly, I abandoned chrome for one reason, opera GX, as it has specific features for gamers like me, where there are several interesting features for twitch lurker.

I try to use safari most of the time as Chrome can be a hog on resources, with a IDE and Docker my Mac has enough to handle. I can’t say I’ve used Firefox for well over 7 years. On a browser perspective I’m pretty sure hardly any QA is done with it with the CMS I work with, maybe this is the problem?

Normies just use Chrome, Safari or Edge, because it comes pre installed on their device. You could replace Firefox with every other browser that isnt Chrome, Safari or Edge and make the exact same video 20 times over.

I am a web developer myself and use Firefox for my work Mostly because I like the devtools in Ff way better than the chrome ones and well… somebody still has to explain to safari what devtool are these days, i guess. Also, since I will avoid the great Kraken that has long forgotten it’s mantra at all cost. Seriously, does anyone remember when google lived by the phrase “don’t be evil”?
The thing that gets me about Ff though and why I can understand people being driven away from it is that it is usually the slowest of the big three to adopt new web standards. This is on one hand understandable, since it is also written by the dev team with the smallest budget in this race, but for a company that literally exists to uphold those same standards it is also mindboggeling.

I do use Firefox in spite of Mozilla's folly of alienating plugin developers and pushing pet projects like Pocket and frivolous window dressing and abandoning power users in their UI/UX. I hate having to hunt for settings options in an about: page that I use regularly in order to improve privacy and security. I don't need another Chrome look-alike. The main reason I do still use Firefox is dreading the total monopoly of Google and of course, having used it since the Beta versions and supporting the Mozilla manifesto of keeping the Web ethical.

In fact, the "it's just faster" argument imo is just nonsense. I bet any measurable speed difference is in fact not discernible for the user, it's just bench mark numbers that don't make a discernible difference in real life.

I find chromium browsers terrible when it comes to TH-cam and other video platforms, while FF pulls videos like a muscle car. Firefox has one giant flaw that I wish it were fixed. Scrolling on laptops sucks out of the box. I'd have to change a ton of settings in about:config to get it close to chromium.

I think the framing of use of certain products over others as an "ethical" choice is not accurate /not the right way to think about it. The ethics or the set of values that one has backing up decisions is political. The fact that Mozilla, as opposed to Google, has values makes the choice a political one.

I use Firefox for most personal activities and chrome for work. The issue with Firefox currently is that the developer base is not as capable when it comes to responding to security threats. Because of the field I work in, Firefox becomes a nonstarter for that reason unfortunately. If that changes in the future, I will be switching over to use Firefox almost exclusively.
