  • This is a test of Rage Trypan 100 gr mechanical broadhead.
Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Trypan posted in parentheses as well.
Total Trypan Score: 67.60 pts = 6 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 17 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 10 (20 on 20 pt scale) & the max score of a Fixed is 8 (16 on 20 pt scale).
    2. Cut Size (20%, 18.54 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (2"+.24" x 7 = 6.27 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2"+..24"/2.5" x 7 = 6.27 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (2"/2 x 6 = 6 pts)
    3. Blades (20%, 17.38 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 225 grams=9.75/10=8.78pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grams=8/10=7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 14.68 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.25" = 6.25 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (50 layers=6.43 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 2 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 after each shot & weighted to 12% of the score. (2/12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (NA)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (NA)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.
-1 both blades broken on Penetration Test 2
-1 blade broken on Opening Test
TOTAL Trypan SCORE: 67.60= 6 Golden Arrows
    Price of Trypan: $16.67/head
    Grading Scale:
    90-100 10 Golden Arrows
    85-90 9
    80-85 8
    70-80 7
    60-70 6

2019: The trypan was the first mechanical head that I ever tried. Put a huge slice in a 140" whitetail, the buck went 40yds. Worked amazing.
2020: 30yds shot on a 130" buck. only got 4" of penetration. Watched the buck on my trail cams for the next 3 weeks with a 2" slash in his rib cage.
2021: Shot a doe at 20 yds watched her run away with my arrow hanging out. No blood. Never recovered the deer. I then sobered up and went back to my Fixed blade Thunderheads. I'm done experimenting. Staying with what has worked for me for decades.

Been shooting almost exclusively Rage for over 10 years. Trypans for the last few seasons. Have killed around a dozen critters with them from javelina to elk and never had any problems with them. They are devastating. The entrance wounds are insane and I’ve had full pass through son deer at very long ranges. The biggest reason I shoot them is they are accurate. They fly just like my field points, to the point where I don’t even mess with the practice heads anymore.

Great video John. Love your broadhead tests. Not a rage fan but I have shot them and tested them against other heads, obviously not as comprehensively as you. I shot one through 3/8 plywood and was shocked that it penetrated, expanded fully and didn’t break. One of the blades had a bend but that’s it. Just another data point. Thanks for what you do and keep showing us what’s working best!

I have been waiting for this test for sooo long!!!
I am from South Africa and have used this broadhead for close to 5 years. I have taken numerous species from eland to bushpig without experiencing this type of failure. I do however agree that the blades have a tendency to bend at the wingtips.
I will still advocate this broadhead for medium game, especially for impala and warthogs which are notorius stringjumpers and where you need a wide cut on marginal shots...
I have since switched to the Sevr 2.0.

Yeah, they can certainly work. But I'd much rather use a head that can hold its full shape and edge throughout the entire animal. It's not so much about wanting to re use it, but just wanting it to stay intact. If it kills the animal but is all messed up, that's okay. But what if it doesn't kill the animal because it's all messed up?

Pretty much replicates my experience with Rage broadheads. Shot 2 deer, found 2 deer and broke 4 blades. The first deer was a 180lb field dressed buck, lost the unsupported part of one blade in a rib on entry and found the full 2nd blade resting just inside the heart. The head with the remaining half of the 1st blade continued penetrating to the off shoulder. My second kill was a 90ish lb doe (field dressed) lost both blades in the ribs on the entry side leaving only the ferrule to penetrate into the upper heart/aorta coming to rest after maybe 7" of penetration.

  • @dantheman348

I like your test methods, I feel like sharpness isn’t weighted enough though… in all my years bowhunting I feel sharpness is the #1 factor in a clean kill and quick recovery… assuming the head flies well. My experience with mechanicals has been they leave a great blood trail but the animal seems to always run farther than expected, maybe the slapping or sensation of it causes the animal to freak out and bolt… have had much shorter recoveries with smaller fixed blade heads that were just simply crazy sharp… much less deflection issues also. Do you feel there’s any merit to the theory that a extremely sharp fixed blade head may cause less ‘freak out’ factor and therefore less distance tracking? That’s been my personal experience, curious to hear your thoughts on this.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for sharing that. I think giving sharpness and edge retention 20% is weighted accurately. If a head is sharp but the blade breaks, then what good is that? Or if its sharp but at such an angle that it doesn't penetrate well, or fly well, what good is that? Or if it's super sharp but only has a tiny cut, it will not be as lethal as one that's super sharp and has a wider cut.
I think 20% for flight, 20% for sharpness/edge retention, 20% for cut size, 20% for durability and 20% for penetration is fair.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures thanks for replying, and I see your point 100%. I was eating my words yesterday, as I shot an 8 point and he managed to jump the string just enough to turn a lung shot into a liver shot (thankfully I recorded the hunt). I was using the wasp sharpshooter, and thankfully we recovered the deer-we found that the head just barely missed the lungs. I couldn’t help but think how much trouble I could have saved with another inch of cutting diameter! The shot was my fault, but things do happen out there and that’s the benefit of a big mechanical. I guess at the end of the day, every design is a compromise of sorts. Thanks for taking the time to reply and making these great test videos.

Why? For the love of money ,not the sport. I've shot a lot of different heads over time and I'll sing the praises of what works. Frankly though I'm sick of seeing junk , offered up in the broadhead market, only to hear a "pro" talk them up and down because he was paid. Good review sorry for blabbing

Make mechanicals illegal why cause you don’t like them, sound like a terrible reason to make it illegal

Well, honestly, I don't think it's fair to call the failure of this head a failure of all mechanicals. I've tested a number of mechs that have been MUCH more durable than many fixed blade heads.

I'm sure they can kill a lot of animals. I sure wouldn't want to get shot with one. But their blades really are some of the weakest I've ever seen. I just can't understand why--even super cheap knock offs have much more durable blades.
