EXODUS SWEPT 100 gr Broadhead Test--One of the Best in 2022

  • This is a test of the 100 gr 3 blade Exodus Swept broadhead, by QAD. Here is a link to show how to sharpen them using the Stay Sharp Guide: l. l.php?u=https%...
    Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Exodus posted in parenthesis as well.
    Total Exodus 100gr Score: 88.68 = 9 Golden Arrows
    1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 16 pts)
    This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Exodus got 16 pts + 1 bonus point for extra good flight.
    2. Cut Size (20%, 14.27 pts)
    The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
    The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.88" = 5.26 pts)
    The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.88" = 5.26 pts)
    The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.25" = 3.75 pts)
    3. Sharpness (20%, 17.8 pts)
    Initial sharpness (9%, 150 grs = 10/10= 9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +100 grs = 8/10 = 7.2 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
    Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
    What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
    A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
    A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
    A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
    Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
    Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (8/10=1.6 pts)
    4. Penetration (20%, 18.61 pts)
    There are 3 penetration tests:
    Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (8" = 8 pts)
    Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
    (67 layers=8.61 pts)
    Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
    5. Durability (20%, 20 pts)
    Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (10/10 = 5 pts)
    If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
    Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
    BONUS: (+ 1 for large triangular holes, +1 for extra good flight)
    TOTAL SCORE: 88.68 pts = 9 Golden Arrows
    Price of Exodus: $14.33/head

    Thanks for information on the Exodus and all the testing you do with broadheads, I started these broadheads again 2 years ago after watching some of your testing and one of my friends switched over to them last year and he killed a really nice buck in Kansas with them. The broadhead did a really good job on the big bodied buck, it's amazing how sharp the blades are new and how they continue to stay sharp even after continually shooting them into a broadhead target.

    Thanks to your channel I have the 100 grain full blades as South Dakota doesn’t allow barbed heads and that’s what the swept fall under in their regulations. Thanks for all the work you do with the testing! I can’t wait for your next hunt!

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, I just said the same thing. I live in Pierre (pier) South Dakota.
      I hope to be hunting this next year spring turkey. Used to be you had to have for Spring Turkey only a minimum of 3 blades but they might have changed this since I see nothing in the rules about this anymore since the late 2000's & early 2010's.
      The bow hunting Rules I find dumb are about using scopes being so restrictive to the point people can't even use the magnifying parts that only help make it so you can see the pin better, yes only one pin per bow (at least was this way) as South Dakota law people for Game Fish & Parks they have yet to fix that part to the pin rule. Not that I use a sight anyhow, but for others. These two rules need to change so scope definition is not super restrictive and pin rule as people had to until recently needed go to a shop to get a sight for compound fixed or have that special tool at home as most sights except one model came as a more than one pin per sight.

    • @southdakotasaved126
      @southdakotasaved126 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@caseysmith544 I agree, some of the rules are dumb, there is already so much technology that is allowed anyway, I always think that the game and fish rules should fall on the side of allowing anything archery related within reason that helps in making a clean ethical quick harvest. I shot traditional for many years until I hurt my shoulder, I have since moved to compound, but even in the old days, unlike many traditional shooters, I always supported compounds and technology within reason because it brought many new people into archery hunting and with all of the anti-hunters out there, we need numbers and we all need to stick together!

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Full Model are basically the same, but should be legal there. They made it just for that reason.

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LuskArcheryAdventures Yep, just pointing it out for those who want to hunt in South Dakota, it seems to be a hunting destination, mainly for pheasants that are gun only but some where they do not have Antelope they might try to bow hunt them on same trip they go hunt pheasant.

    As of now I am a simple whitetail hunter, and I use the sevr 1.5. I plan to branch out, and hunt things such as elk, black bear, and possibly moose in the coming years. When I do, I feel that the Exodus will be a staple in my quivers. Between it and the sevr, I think I'd have 99% of north american hunting situations covered.

  • @yourmomma2995
    @yourmomma2995 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    off topic a bit, but worth discussing. in my experiences i seem to get better blood trails from 3 blades vs 4 blades. i think 3 larger flaps open up more than 4 smaller flaps. truth be known, the best blood trails i ever saw was when i was shooting the standard ramcats, but i have now switched to an all steel one-piece head strictly for durability reasons.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. Anecdotal evidence varies so much, so it's hard to make general conclusions like that. I have a video called, "Broadheads & Blood Trails: Understanding the Connection" here on my channel. I go thru all the primary factors that affect blood letting. If you get a chance, give it a look and see what you think.

      For the Full Model, it's easy to use the Stay Sharp Guide for Replaceable Blades. For the Swept, I just use a simple "pull thru" hand sharpener and it works quite well.

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an Iron Will Broadhead Battle coming this summer: 100 gr Solid Double Bevel vs Single Bevel. They are excellent heads as well. I’d say the IW 100 gr solid is slightly more forgiving in flight than the Exodus but it’s cut is also slightly smaller than the Exodus. For super long shots or really big animals, like a moose, I’d take the Iron Will Solid Single Bevel. For deer size and smaller, I’d take the Exodus. Or I’d take the Iron Will Wide over the Exodus for that sized game. All that said, the Exodus is right there with it, and less than half the price.

The buck only went 150 yards but the shot was at 6 yards so the fairly high entrance and low exit plugged with fat produced a very minimal blood trail(not the broadheads fault). So I’ve bow hunted now for 35yrs and guided bow hunting in the Midwest for 8yrs and for the 1st time I find myself slightly confused about what’s best for me. I shot 75gr muzzy 3 blades since they were made available as it was almost always the reliable thing out there and super affordable. Kinda equate it to 180gr rem core locs in 30-06. Maybe switch to 100gr to be more precise. So I switched to Rage 2 blades after seeing a few yrs of devastation while guiding. That being said there were failures with the rages to especially during super cold and wet conditions. I’m now thinking setup over again. I luv the idea of heavy arrows and your choice of premium single bevel heads. I’m just not sure the complete change to this style will suit me best. Gotta be a middle ground so I’m kinda looking at a few heads and after watching your extensive tests I’m leaning towards tooth of the arrow, qad, and black cat set razors. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I know I wanna go back to fixed heads but ant seem to choose. I shoot an older Hoyt at 28in draw length w/73lb draw weight shooting around 285fps. Not sure of the weight but I’m guessing somewhere around 380-400gr.
