SEVR 1.75 Broadhead Test: HIGHEST SCORE YET!

This is a test of the new SEVR 1.75.
Here is summary of my 2023 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
Total Score: 93.01 = 10 Golden Arrows
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 20 pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16.
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.97 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.75"+.34"=2.09"/2.5 x 7 = 5.86 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.09"/2.5" x 7 = 5.86 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.75"/2 x 6 = 4.5 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 19.8 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 175 grs=10/10=9 pts ) & Edge Retention (9%, +0 grs=10/10=9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
701-800 gr: 4
801-900 gr: 3
901-1000 gr: 2
1001-1100 gr: 1
1101+ gr: 0
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (8/10=1.6 pts).
4. Penetration (20%, 15.44 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.5" = 6.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(54 layers=6.94 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (8/10 = 4 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.

I know he hasn’t answered but I’d say 1.5, bit animal you want as much penetration as possible and you’re going to get better penetration with the 1.5..
It depends on your set up. The 1.5 will give you a bit more penetration.
How would you say it compares to the 2.0?
Well, the video explains that. Just a slightly smaller cut so slightly better penetration. I think it’s a great balance between the 1.5 and 2.0. I took some hogs and a nice red stag with it, and it did very well. The new Hybrid is the bomb.

I just shot the SEVR 1.75 in the practice mode. Holy Cow!! It shot identical to my field tips! I can’t wait to try this on a September Bull!! Thanks for the great review! It’s because of your review that I decided to go with this broadhead.
Yes, they fly extremely well. Make sure you check the sharpness after using them in practice mode. Sometimes target material can get in there and dull them a bit.

Love the material!!! I'm curious- did they (sevr) send you the broadheads to test? It might be a good idea to purchase through a friend so they don't know who's getting the broadheads. I've had a few sevr's that were definitely not a 175 sharpness.
They sent me a big pack. I asked them if they changed anything in the blades to affect the sharpness and they had not. They presumed it was a batch that was hardened a bit more than normal, but still within their acceptable range of variance. That caused them to be a bit sharper, but also have a bit more edge chatter. Everything is a tradeoff.
You've had a video for every broadhead I was considering buying for this upcoming season, and each video was beneficial. This particular video influenced me to go with the Sevre this year, Thank you! I will be using your code when I buy them!

This thing is impressive....ill probably stick with the 2.0s for now mainly for whitetail at distances not further than 30 yards where i hunt i like having the extra cut but when i hunt black bear this may be the better option.

Love the SEVR 1.75 Titanium…… Love the Mega Meats also but they are definitely a use one time Broadhead because blades are not that durable…. SEVR 1.75 Best I’ve ever shot!!

No broadhead is perfect. But these Sherri stack the odds well in the hunters favor. The combination of excellent flight, durability, cut size, and penetration are hard to beat.

Used a Sevr 2.0 last year and it went clean through. Total weight with arrow and broadhead is around 400 grains, if that helps. I shoot 60 lbs. also.

My only real pet peeve with the sevr design is the way the back side of that tab thats used to open the blades impedes the cutting surface of the opposite blade. Easily the most durable expandable I have seen though.
Yeah, I hear ya. That's a drawback to me as well...but then the penetration tests show how well it still penetrates...and I've had tremendous success with it in the field.

We really need a head-to-head battle between the 1.5, 1.75, and 2.0 now to see if that 1/4" of cut really makes a difference.
Blades still seem to be the weak link. I'd like to see them make a non-pivoting 1.5" or somehow limit how far it pivots so it could move around bone but keep more cut size.
The tests are identical so you can compare the scores of all 3 of them and see how they measure up. When a blade pivots, IF it pivots, the cut size is more than half of the 1.5”, as it flares out quite a bit. So you still get over 1” diameter cut, then it quickly pivots back for the full 1.5” cut. And the tip adds an extra 1/2” of cross cut, giving at least 1.5” of total cut, even when it pivots. That’s more than many fixed blade heads.
Do the blades retain shape after a normal deer pass thru so they can be re sharpened?
I’ve shot them through deer scapula and had them come out fine. That’s usually the case. I had one tip bend on a red stag. But normally the blades can be easily re-sharpened. They can be a pain to remove and put back together, but after some practice, it’s not so bad.

I'm in the minority here but I've had mixed results with SEVR. I used them for two years and more often than not I was not happy with the entry/exit wounds and blood flow/blood trail left. I was using the discontinued 1.7 but still. I really expected better results from them. And no, they weren't marginal shots either. I've since been experimenting with a few fixed blades you have reviewed.
I really wanted to love these SEVRs since you speak so highly of them John.
Read what I wrote about my experience with mechanicals with blades that swing back and forth. They often fail to penetrate in a straight line and wound a lot of animals. Its happened to me a few times
Pivoting blades are a no no

Mine has been a bit different. I've taken well over 20 animals with them. The majority of them had holes much larger than the cutting diameter. Some were the same size as the cutting diameter. And a few were smaller, and only when they entered or exited at an angle. Blood trails with any head are extremely unpredictable, as there are a myriad of factors that affect it. I've had tiny 2 blade heads make incredible blood trails and huge 4 blade heads make zero blood trail. But by and large, Sevrs have done extremely well for me.
Would you think the seven 1.5 be a good head for a traditional bow of 48 lbs?
I wouldn't use this with a traditional bow. Although I wouldn't doubt with PERFECT arrow flight and a solid arrow around 500 grains it COULD work, I think I'd stick with a fixed head like a Magnus stinger to maximize your penetration with a fairly low energy, momentum set up like that. I'm not Lusk obviously but have shot traditional equipment a lot. If you really want , go be the rebel and try it and post your results tho. You may shock a lot of folks
It certainly could work, if there was enough weight to your arrow, but I'd prefer a smaller cut fixed blade head for that set up.

Same here and if for some reason the swhacker didn't open it still cuts a one inch hole.

This is a comparative broadhead test. How well do they do verse the same tests as other broadheads. I am making an analysis comment on one of the tests. Have you brought any useful comments, analysis, or knowledge to the purpose of this video?

The durability is superb for a mech. The holes are smaller cause the resistance of steel is so great, it causes the blades to overlock in the back, which is what keeps them from breaking. It’s a test for the blades durability and not really replicable for a hunting hole wound channel in this case.
What is the cutting diameter through the MDF? It looks like a much smaller hole then 1.75”, as did the cut diameter through the steel plate. Are the blades closing when something hard it hit?
Yup they don’t always open to the full cut. Had it happen on a whitetail last year. I wish they locked open instead of swinging.

@@madwe2269 buddy, I’ve shot plenty of deer with them. They’re durable heads and they fly well. But they for sure don’t cut the full width on game. Not sure if they’re swinging to one side then not swinging back or what. Maybe I should of said a none swinging blade.
They do lock open, the vast majority of the time. Gator style heads require the tension of hide to fully open. MDF tends to crush a bit. And steel is so hard it forces the blades back a bit. The only time the entrance is smaller on animals is when their hit at an angle, which causes the blades to pivot a bit, making a smaller entrance. It can happen on the exit as well. But they typically lock…and pivot. That gives them better penetration, and straighter penetration, but at the cost of cut size in rare instances. I’ve taken well over 20 animals with them and the vast majority had wicked entrance holes.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures John, next time you shoot an animal with one try to look at the cut size on the organs when you’re gutting it. Most of mine showed the blade swinging to one side and staying there until it exits. Especially on quartering shots. Still great heads and I always recommend them to anyone looking for a mechanical.

Very good. I like the Robusto out of my crossbow, just to add a little weight. But the 2.0 works just as well.

I hunt high on public land and have to deal with steep angled shots. This past season I shot completely through the spine of 2 big does and got exits on both. I used the same head on both. These 1.75's are fantastic. I don't miss the 1.7 like I thought I would. I keep two 1.75's and two 1.5's in my quiver.

Also, just looking for a professional opinion. 460-470gr arrow at 280-285fps. Would you use for a whitetail/black bear/elk head?
Right? It’s a good season for new heads! I think manufacturers are designing heads to excel in my tests. We’re all the winners in that. And these would be great for moose and smaller, on an average bow and arrow weight set up.
Was the test done with a 100 or 125 gr ?
The ferrule is narrow on the 125 right?
I shoot the robusto with brass inserts on 20’ victory arrows with my Sub 1 and brass inserts on black eagle executioners with my Stryker 350 and off a Caldwell field pod at 70 yds and have to shoot a different spot each time. Unreal accuracy!
This was a 125 gr.
Have to say I love your videos but am noticing some bias toward certain brands. No way it scored that high with all that damage in the steel. Seen a lot of broad heads with way less damage get lower scores by quite a bit. Just my opinion but I seen others mention this as well!

Man, my whole test process is based on consistency and comparisons. I have very detailed scoring procedures for edge chatter, tip curl, etc. I constantly compare my scoring in each of the tests to make sure they are consistent. Did you see the score it got on the steel? Completely consistent with other heads that did the same.

I just purchased 4 of these exact heads from SEVR. One thing I don't love or trust about the design yet, is how the blades are released/unlocked. If a piece of bone, or meat got lodged in between the blades I could see them closing within the channel....maybe not if they continued forward. I am just leery. Based on people's love of this head, I am going to try it and see if I can use them on a deer this late season and see how they do. They fly great, although one of the four I purchased just won't spin true. Oh and thanks, I used your Code!
I've wondered about that as well...but never had an issue with it. They pivot so freely, I don't think it would happen very often.
Would 1.75 be okay with 65 LB draw weight 438 grain total arrow weight? Big muleys and maybe elk in a year or two? Or stick with 1.5?
What's your draw length? I'd say it would be fine.
A buddy of mine had the wing but break on his deer last year on a 2.0 sevr, I thinks sevr is close to being the best mech but the swinging blades prevent them from being great. To many stories of poor blood trails
Yeah, there are stories of every head leaving poor blood trails, honestly. I've taken almost 30 animals with them know and always had good blood. It's all about shot placement...and sometimes luck of hitting an artery. I did a video called Broadheads & Blood Trails to discuss this.
I understand how the pivoting blades can benefit, but I’m imagining as it flies through an animal that there’s slightly more resistance on the left, then the right, then the left. Can you end up with a 1” wound channel because you don’t get perfect uniform resistance the whole way through and it pivots back and forth?
Yeah, if that were the case, then you'd get a smaller wound channel...and great penetration accordingly. But from my experience they don't bounce back and forth nearly that much--only on very hard impacts to one blade.

Randy Ulmer is the OG of this head, his design. Years ago with the ulmer edge.. I did see a blade break off on an elk, which then the head is only a field bc of the pressure on the other blade. The ulmer edge was a 1.5 head.
Yep...and they've improved on his design quite a bit.
I just don’t know why people mess with mechanicals anymore. Just no reason with the knowledge and quality of the single bevels today.
Well, I would have to disagree with you there. My bow is very well tuned and I still see some advantages with mechs. One is flight--when a shot is really far, or made in heavy wind, or super quick, or if you're in an unusual position or, or really nervous--the flight forgiveness is a big advantage. Two--the cut size. You can make some really big holes with mechs. Like with this one--not many 1.75" fixed blade heads out there...and none will fly like these.
On top of that, these Sevrs are more durable than a lot of fixed blade heads.
I hunt with a lot of different heads, both fixed and mechs. I believe each have their advantages.
not crazy how some of the blade is over taken by that locking piece (wing butt), i shot this broadhead at my biggest deer to date this year quartering to me at 23 yards, i thought i ten ringed him, i did not get him and we never found the arrow,
Sorry that happened...you may have caught the shoulder; who knows? Crazy stuff happens with so many dynamics all converging at once. I'm not a huge fan of that deployment arm seemingly obstructing the blades, but if it were a real problem, it would show up in the penetration testing...but these penetrate very well. I've taken dozens of animals with them and they've always performed well.
I used Sevr broad head. Last year. I killed my biggest whitetail. Shot him at 40yards. He only went 2.0 yards.

Yeah, they fly EXTREMELY well.
That is a good looking broadhead. I am surprised that it scored so well, given the damage to the blades, tip, and structure (broken piece) when engaging the steel plate and the fact that it used an O-ring to retain the blades while in flight.
yeah, the broken blade and dinged up edges are a bummer, i think most people appreciate and much prefer an o-ring/rubber band/heat shrink tubing blade retention, for the ease of changing, simplicity, reliability, and easily availability. i know for myself ill take them any day over figity, complicated, springs, or clips that you have to order from the manufacturer.
@@yourmomma2995 You make a great point regarding the simplicity and availability of the o-ring.
I am as consistent as I can possibly be in all my scoring. If you see the score for the steel, you’ll see it’s the same with other heads that have fared the same. And heads get a bonus for no O Rings, but are not docked for having O rings. They are kind of a pain, but are actually the fastest way to deploy the heads. So Sevrs do not get a bonus there, whereas Killzones, Rage NC and some others do.
It's because he has a slight bias toward these broadheads. You can see it even in the wording he uses..."incredibly forgiving flight".....brushes over the fact that the blades didn't deploy in the gel....praises that the blades fully opened on the foam. I think its a great head, but there is a slight bias, at least it feels that way.
Is not really difficult to watch a review, take in all the given info, and then just make your own decision without questioning someone's integrity. It's easy, actually.
I get alot of my broadheads based on your reviews would you feel comfortable usung the sevr 1.75 on a black bear?
Oh yeah. Would be an excellent choice. So would the 2.0.
Just a question it looked like all there was is a pin hole in the cardboard. If these open full on entry shouldn't there of been full blade cuts through the cardboard?
Gator heads do not open very well on softer surfaces. They’re designed to open on taught surfaces, like hide. But there was much more than a pin hole, and they did reach their full cut after a few layers

Got to test it out for real yesterday on a 300lb hog. Blew right through the shoulder and into the opposite shoulder almost dropping it in its tracks. Expired in less than 2 minutes. Shooting a 70lb Mathews V3X with a 450g vap ss elite. The tip of the broadhead was unblemished

Yep. The shorter cut gives better penetration and durability as well.
John, do the blades open up to full size after going through the MDF on their own or do you have to pry them open? Also what cutting diameter do they make going through MDF or Steel?
They open fully when I put shoot them into things that simulate an animal--like hide stretched over a box. With MDF, they usually open fully, but not always. Sometimes MDF collapses on impact. With the steel, they open fully, but then the rear part of the blades overlap, absorbing energy and cause them to not cut a full 1.75" hole. That's by design, to keep the blades from breaking.

75lb draw - 27.5 draw length - 473 grain total arrow weight (easton axis shaft with 150 gr upfront - 100 gr broadhead) - currently shooting 278 fps
Either would work well; I’d prefer the 2.0 for black bear.

Could you do your ballistic gel penetration test comparing sevr in normal condition, and then with the blades already locked open? I’m curious whether you might see a measurable loss of penetration from the work needed to open the broadhead.
That would be interesting. But the blades open extremely easily; that’s why they use the silicon rings. I doubt it would make much difference, depending on the medium.
I’ll probably stick to the 2.0 robusto. More weight and cutting diameter. If I need more penetration I’ll go to the 1.5

It depends on your set up. But I would definitely use them on elk.

I bought 6 of these, and took them to the range. I was attempting to see the flight pattern at 100 yards. it did drop quite a bit at 100 and it also barely penetrated a cardboard/carpet target. at 70 yards it penetrated my foam target only about 2 inches. I really do like this broadhead, but I'm worried about the penetration on a animal between 60 and 80 yards. what's your thoughts?
Thanks for sharing that. I shot a zebra with a 1.5 at 82 yards and it zipped thru the neck--not a complete pass thru, but the arrow stuck out of the far side of the neck about 20". And I shot a moose in the front leg at 70 yds--it went thru the top of the leg and into the chest--really good penetration. I was shooting 72# but with just a 27" draw and a 450 gr arrow.
The 1.5 was just named by Field & Stream as "Best Elk Broadhead 2023." The 1.75 does not penetrate as well as the 1.5, but it's not too far off. Same blade angle, but just 1/4" more blade.

Hi John, thanks for another great review. I currently shoot a 27.5 inch draw at 55 lbs, although I am thinking of increasing that to 57 lbs. Would that be enough to get pass through’s with the 1.75 titanium or would I need to shoot the 1.5 titanium instead in your opinion?
I have a short draw length too at 28in but I’m shooting just about 75 pounds. I hunt deer and elk mostly. I’ve shot mechanicals and fixed. I honestly recommend with your lighter draw weight to shoot a fixed blade broadhead. QAD exodus is by far the most accurate fixed blade I’ve ever shot and shoots identical to my field points. I shot a deer at 75 with a QAD last year.

I can't remember. It's listed in the description of each video on TH-cam. They were close.
I notice the o-ring was gone in the photos of the steel and the concrete. Were you replacing that after each shot?
I only use the O ring on the first shot into the steel plate...with all the mechs I test, to keep them consistent.

Oh yeah. I prefer the 2.0 for turkeys, but no doubt the 1.75 would do very well.

Absolutely. They also make a 2" all steel crossbow model, but any of them will work fine with a crossbow.
