SEVR 1.5 125 gr Broadhead Test--One of the Best in 2022

Here is summary of my 2022 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/ the scores of the Sevr 1.5 included.
Total SEVR 1.5 125gr Score: 90.75 = 10 Golden Arrows: HIGHEST 2022 Score so far.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20% 20pts)
This is not just a test of how heads fly out of my bow, as it was in the past. With a well tuned bow, properly built arrows & good form, almost every head flies well. That's why in the past most heads got a flight score of 9 or 10. But that doesn't help those who may not have perfectly tuned bows/arrows/good form. So now I am gauging Flight Forgiveness. This is based on how the head flies for me, how well it spins, how "sensitive" the flight is to imperfections, & the exposed surface area of the blades. The max score of a Mech is 20 & the max score of a Fixed is 16. The Sevr 1.5 got 20 pts.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.74 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5+.33=1.83/2.5 x 7=5.12 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5+.33=1.83/2.5 x 7=5.12 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5/2 x 6=4.5 pts)
3. Sharpness (20%, 18.73 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, (275=9.25/10 x 9=8.33 pts) & Edge Retention 9%, (275=+0=10: 10/10 x 9=9 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF and 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 15.83 pts)
There are 3 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 9% of the score. (6.5" = 6.5 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 9% of the score.
(57 layers=7.33 pts)
Angled Penetration Test: How effectively does the head penetrate 1/4" MDF covered by carpet at a 45 degree angle. This accounts for 2% of the score. (2/2pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.45 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (4.75 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (2.70 pts)
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS: Heads will be rewarded bonus points for special, intangible features such as: rotation, no O rings/clips for mechs, extra thickness, hole size, other unique designs, etc.

John i can't thank you enough for turning me on to these heads, they just can't be beat I've ran them in my quiver with iron wills and annihilators over the last couple yrs and those heads just can't touch a svr from what I've seen. I'll probably keep trying to find a fixed blade i like more but atleast for the last couple years when that bull is coming in i grab the svr. I was using the ulmer edge a few years ago and absolutely loved em until they stopped production. When sevr came out to say I was ecstatic is an understatement! I've been using this same he's in the 100grain version the last couple seasons and they are absolutely wicked on whitetails. Unbelievable flight, penetration 2nd to none and freaking great blood trails I'll keep shooting these until they quit making em! And thank you John for all this testing and research you do on these heads! Always alot of fun to watch and very informative!

Great heads. The Robusto, which is the same as the 2.0 but all steel is really exceptional.
I’ve been waiting for this video! FYI those small chips in the blades closest to the top of the ferrule occur when the blades swing up with more than usual force and meet the edge of the ferrule above them. Overall great heads!
Thanks. But actually, those small chips are there when they're brand new--it's so they don't but thru the O ring.

I bought 2 of these before last season for a friend of mine to try out on his yearly Kansas hunt. He used one on a doe at 70 yards, that ran 40 yards and dropped dead!
He has used that same broadhead to kill more deer here at home! That’s saying a lot for him because he never uses the same broadhead twice!
He absolutely loves them. I didn’t get a chance last season to hunt but will be using these this season.

Because of your previous videos and test results on the sevr heads, last fall I bought some 1.5's and gave them a try for whitetails. These were my 1st mechanical heads and unless something drastic happens I'll continue to shoot them for the foreseeable future. Excellent results on 2 deer. One 1/4ing away @ 32 yards & one 1/4ing towards @ 36. Devastating results on both deer. Superb arrow flight, Hellacious holes on both entrance and the exit. And although both of the deer dropped within sight, both blood trails (as short as they were) were about as good as you can get. Great tests and reviews and thanks for the $5 off code! I started using the Sevr broadheads in 2020. I've had such good success and convinced family members to use them. Combined with family, we have put down 20+ deer in two years with over 100% recovery success rate. In two occasions I've killed two does with one shot. All 4 we're shot through the lungs and quickly recovered.

not only that the BHs do really well in tests, I have also excellent experience with SEVR's customer service - once they had a promotion that included free shipping, and usually that only means free shipping on US ground, but they honored their "mistake" they made in the promotion text and sent it for free to down under. Another time I had some issues with the tracking number, contacted SEVR and they responded in hours and sorted it out - not a matter of course these days.
I have had amazing customer service with sevr on an issue with a target that was sent to me.

I'm looking at my 1.5 & 2.0 heads. This is all that I use. Devestates Turkey and other animals. I love them. The only pain for me is to switch out blades but the more I do the better I get at it !!!!!!!!

I wonder why the tip bent this time more so than last time in the durability video? Three times into the cinder block vs once? LOVE THIS CONTENT!
It all depends on how exactly the head enters the cinder block and what exactly it hits in the cinder block...but I think this one bent from the intense wobbling of the arrow after it embedded into the concrete.
As of last saturday I have some recent experience testing the SEVR 1.7 on about a 100 pound boar. Shot placement was slightly quartered to double lung, right behind the shoulder 21 yards. Clean pass-through, broke one rib on entry. Entry hole was great, exit was little more than half an inch. Pig ran 120 yards with a decent blood trail. Head was still in great shape.
As far as durability and accuracy, the head is great. The reason I won't be hunting with them is the way the blades swing around and find the path of least resistance after deploying. It doesn't keep cutting the full width. I have a feeling one blade folds in completely and leaves just one sticking out perpendicular, but that's just a theory.

the "swinging around" bones is actual an advantage for me - why would you want to loose momentum by having to go through bones when it can be utilized for doing even more damage wrt deeper penetration and more cutting lunge and heart tissue?
Your opinion could maybe possibly have some merit, but it's just not the case. The blades only move around when one impacts something significantly harder than the other, which is why your exit was smaller, you probably hit a rib with one. Not using something based on an idea with minimal testing is illogical...
@@madwe2269 I shot a buck with them as well with similar results, I'll do a more in depth look at the vitals if I do shoot one through something again.
Great to have an exit-hole, but 1/2"?? That's almost just the width of the arrow itself.

Hi John! Thanks for the great videos! I was curious what changes Sevr has made to these over the last few years. I just watched your Sevr review from a few years ago and you weren't too impressed, but now they seem to be one of your favorites. Just curious what changed...
Yeah, that was the original 2.1. Since that time, they changed the blade angles quite a bit and shortened the blades as well. Much more durable and much better penetration.
We need you to ad a long range accuracy test in these tests
I used to do that…but many found it no helpful cause they never take shots that far. And it does get difficult to drive to a place I can shoot far enough.
I recently switched to this 1.5 in 100g from standard slick tricks because of your testing and reading other hunt reviews. Others in camp view all mechanical's performance the same, and they are set on non-mech for elk. I agree some energy is lost to deploy the blades, but the blade swing tech would help increase penetration compared to fixed blades when bones are glanced. Arrow flight is the same as with field tips, and your testing shows the toughness. The elk didn't cooperate this year, but look forward to using the 1.5 in the future. Have you ever considered measuring the velocity difference at 20y or farther between field tip and each broadhead? That would impact penetration too if different broadheads create more drag and cause more velocity loss.

Man, they're both great choices. I'd probably take both. I'd use the Sevr 1.5 for extra long shots or super windy days.
Took a doe and a buck this season with these Sevr 1.5s. Both animals died quickly. I was impressed with these broadheads, and shot them with confidence they would fly true.

I know alot of people hate rages but they show up about any head on entrance and exit holes atleast the older ones do hope sevr make this head with a bigger cut like 2.5 or so so when it folds shut around bone you still get a good cut instead half or three quarter inch
Rage does an excellent job on entrance holes; I love the way they open. I just wish the blades were more durable.
@@LuskArcheryAdventures they aren't the best at all in that department but for killing deer they excel the collars suck but they work way better than the no collar one I have killed alot of game with em even a elk seen some bent blades but not broken I shot a deer last year that had five holes from one shot nearly chopped one front leg off it just is hard to beat in killing department won't past no steel plate or cinder block test but super deadly keep up your good work I may try the sevr if they make a 2.5 125 or 150 grain head price is pretty high on em though

I really don't care for mechanicals personally, but if I had to use some SEVR just seems like it is the overall #1 on the durability and function balance. Premium components make premium products! (Usually lol)

Great review John. I was hoping that you would test a sevr under your new regimen. Have you ever sharpened the blades on a Sevr. Just curious how difficult it might be as I like to sharpen my my broadheads for extra sharpness.
staysharp has a video on how to do it. their "replaceable blade guide" is what to use. expect to spend a half hour per blade.

I use the Stay Sharp replaceable guide to get a mirrored edge on my Sevr blades. Absolutely razor sharp.
Having been using rage for many years, I would definitely buy these, if they offered a 2.5-3+ cut option
I have the 2.1s and the 1.5s. Used to use Rage Trypan and Xtremes. Sevr all the way
That would be fun to try. But that's when the blades get weak as well. I've found that the 1.5 is quite lethal, as the hole is still pretty big and the penetration is better.

Ok I like to see I penetration and flight test with the 1.5 100gr against the QAD Exodus 100g and the tooth of the arrow 100gr all out at 60yards now that would impress me??
Also would be great to see the test out of a 400fps or more crossbow but if not that a compound bow would do lol.

I'd like to, but don't have any plans re how to get them.
Love my Sevrs but i have noticed the tip will bend on hard angled shots. In particular i missed my target low and my arrow went under my target and the broadhead had a bent tip.
The 1.5 is a bit thicker in the tip than the original 2.1. And they've made the 2.0 thicker in the tip as well, recently, for the very reason you pointed out. The Robusto is really pointy but is all steel, so it's much stronger.
Which version would you suggest trying for elk John. I shoot a Ventum 30 set 82.5lbs // 29.5DL with a 470gr Easton Axis 5mm arrow.
For something that big, I'd go with the 1.5, in 125 grains. But you have enough umph to use the 2.0 or even better, the Robusto.
No arguing about the toughness of this head!

Do you happen to know the size of the o-ring that they use? I’ve heard about people using dental bands as a replacement but those come in different sizes too. It’s much cheaper.

I’ve used rage for years, but I think I’m going to switch to sevr’s this year. I like the idea of shooting these heads in practice, and the smaller diameter cut on these 1.5’s. The 2” cut diameter on rages has caused some issues for me.

I'm thinking of trying these out, but I'm curious why one would shoot these over a fixed when you get more cut on a 3 or 4 blade fixed head?
Well, it's because of the flight and the cutting diameter. A multi blade fixed head may have a larger total cut, but very few have a cutting diameter of 1.5". And the tip also serves as a cross blade/bleeder type cut, opening up the wound channel more than a typical 2 blade fixed would have. I've found that cutting diameter affects blood trails more than total cut size...all other things equal. And when you add in the flight forgiveness in windy, nervous conditions or very long shots, you won't get that with a fixed blade head.
Isn't it ah little strange that it didn't penetrate as far as something like the rocket sidewinder 3 blade over the top 3 blade? I always thought the big knock on those over the top heads is the fact that they take up alot of energy to open?
I thought it penetrated quite well...what penetration test are you referencing? Sometimes over the top mechs have an "advantage" of a very small entrance hole, thus penetrating more deeply without cutting as much tissue. Also, they can have an extra long tip, making the depth of penetration greater, but again, not actually cutting as much tissue with that long, small tip.

Do you mean in the gel? It was much more closed than the 1.5 in both gel and cardboard. And the 1.5 penetrated more deeply into the cardboard layers--57 vs 52.

That would be a good one. Both nice heads...but from my experience in testing, the Exodus would prevail.

I bought some sevr's last year and idk I was a little disappointed in them. The blades seemed very dull out of the package and my biggest problem with them was when putting the set screw in for practice, it would make the blades protrude out a bit so that they were actually exposed when shooting in practice mode which would dull them. Didn't like it. Did anyone else have these issues?
Well, the sharpness is fairly "average" as far as broadheads go. Some are sharper, some are more dull. But I've not had any of the blades exposed when the screw is installed; not sure how that happened. Did you keep the O ring on as well?
@@LuskArcheryAdventures Yeah I put the screw in to brand new broadheads that I hadn't taken apart yet so everything was right and it pushed the blades out a but so they were out of the ferrel. Weird.
Anybody shot these out of a Ravin R29 or R500? Did the blades deploy early (in flight)?
They won't deploy early. The Robusto, which is their Crossbow model, uses the same O ring retention system.
Ive killed 5 animals with sevrs, and am always impressed with the durability and accuracy of them. But that being said, they just dont seem to put as much blood on the ground as you would think
Good to hear...but blood trails is much more a function of shot placement than anything else. It's really impossible to make real conclusions based on anecdotal evidence. I once shot a nice buck twice with a huge Gravedigger--both solid shots. There was zero blood. I found the deer about 80 yds away, but no blood along the way. Each deer's anatomy, whether their lungs are inflated or deflated, their movement after being shot...and a myriad of other factors come into play that affect blood letting.

That shot on cardboard does not look like they opened on contract. Please explain
Yeah, that's the case with many heads...especially this gator style. They require a tighter medium, like the leather test, in order to deploy properly. A softer material like a target or even MDF that crushes upon impact doesn't consistently allow the blades to deploy. But a taught surface like leather or hide does.
I’m sure people love them but I bought both 1.5 and 2.0 the are just to dull for my liking. I shot a do 31 yards with a crossbow around 350 FPS 410 grain arrow and didn’t even get a pass though with the 2.0 just cant back them. I really wish I could because I’d love to have a good crossbow mech head.
Well, that happens. But sharpness has less to do with penetration than most think. It has a lot to do with the effectiveness of the cut, but not so much the penetration. I've taken 2 blade heads and dulled them with a file, and they penetrated almost the same as a razor sharp one.
If you shot them at 30 yards and didn't get a pass through you hit them in the wrong place. I've broken ribs and shot through so far I couldn't find my arrow at 35 yds with a regular compound.
@@WolfinWolvesClothing713 well no extreme damage on the head and a lighted nock showing where I hit says I didn’t hit anything harder the a few ribs. 440 grain bolt doing roughly 350fps at launch didn’t have enough juice to go through. I like the design but after that showing and how dull the ones I got where I just can’t like them. If they work for you great but for me it’s a pass.

Yeah, the blades are average sharpness. I've mentioned that to them as well. But re the tip-- edge integrity is much more important than its sharpness. I think they are plenty sharp and they keep that edge intact. Their penetration in the penetration tests show that it does fairly well in that department.

Can’t beat single bevel one piece. Properly sharpened… nothing is more reliable or lethal.
