Check out my newer video if you want to know how to CLONE your SSD instead th-cam.com/video/MVKs2WntK5w/w-d-xo.html
You don’t need to peel off the heat shielding. You can carefully slide it all off in one piece and slide it back on to the new one.
IMPORTANT: At 6:10 I forgot to show that you need to connect power before it will let you turn on the steam deck again! If you remember, we entered battery recovery mode! All you need to do is connect power, turn it on, and then turn it back off again. Youlll then be able to boot into recovery mode! Sorry if I caused you any panic! 😅
I'd recommend pinning the comment for avoid people missing this
@@xapsus2221 I thought it was… thanks for the headsup
Hey there, ever since you installed this Western Digital SSD, everything's gone extremely well? No issues with this upgrade? And do you recommend this upgrade?
@@SaiyanChamp working perfectly o issues at all. Recommended! 👍
I cloned the old SSD onto the new one by using two M.2 to USB adapters and the UNIX dd command. There was no need to reinstall steamOS. SteamOS even resized the partition to use the additional space at boot.
A REALLY good SSD tutorial, I have literally just finished installing my 1tb SSD using your guide & it was so easy to follow. Well done. 🙏
Same here, 1 terabyte, worked like a charm. THANK YOUUUUUUU!!!!
Thanks for this tutorial. There's just one thing that was missing. How to proceed after the ssd was installed, since the path you took was to enable the battery storage mode, next thing to do after you inserted the ssd was to plug the power cable, then from there you just need to push the on button then remove the power plug, insert the usb. Then proceed with boot manager.
Yes, well noted. Thanks for the watch! 👍🏼
@@steamdeckguy To be honest, I've watched different ssd replacement. Your video is the most detailed. I had the courage to do the replacement myself after watching your video multiple times.
@@thecritique00 Awesome! Glad to hear!
Other than that it’s great. I over think things. This was great help!
@steamdeckguy please send a link to that ssd 🙏
Very clear and brilliant tutorial! Thank you.
Thanks - appreciate the feedback!
I’m planning on upgrading to OLED and was searching for how to easily transfer from one deck to another and I want to thank you for this
I have the newer deck version (with the black shield inside) and I could just start it, it went to a backup linux version or something. Had an exe on desktop "Reimage SteamOS", which automatically downloaded it, installed it and everything went super smooth. Outside of that, you could also install the new OS on your new SSD via a MicroSD instead of a USB-Stick. It's a lot faster is the only difference. Just make sure to remove the MicroSD to not break it. Really nice tutorial thx. Was done in like 15 minutes.
Thank you for the guide, I felt no need to buy the 512 steam deck when I can just buy the 64 and upgrade my ssd for cheaper.
Just got my OLED steam deck order this past week. Can’t wait to watch all your videos to get familiar w the deck. Thx!
This really helped out thanks Mate!
I skewed two of the screws but manage to remove it with duct tape and my father’s help (he drilled and destroy one of the screw). Thx for the walkthrough, really appreciate it.
Thank you so much. This video helped alot. Straight to the point no nonsense. 👍
Thanks for this tutorial you help me a lot🤟🏽
Hey great idea using the case to hold the system. That tip is gold 🥇
Thank you!! This helped me ❤
Very nice video.. your giving me the confidence boost to do this also thankyou !!
Really helpful, would recommend, although he did under exaggerated the wait time on some of the processing.
Thanks homie. I used your video to help with my 2tb ssd swap. Great work.
Thank you for your Video because I've upgrade my Steamdeck and it works like a charm. 😊👍
thanks for the guide it was very helpful
I fucked up when unscrewing one of the screws for the backplates so I had to drill it out xD the tutorial was spot on! I’m a complete newbie and I kinda just went for it and it’s done.
I upgraded my 64 to 256, thank you. Now i have more memory and my game load faster and save lots of money.
Thanks for this how to video.
Thanks, install took me 5 minutes and im on my way to reinstalling windows! Thank you ❤
very helpful. thanks
Thanks for the video.
My Deck came with a big black shield that only had two screws required to get it off - didn't need to undo a bit of foil to find a screw.
Additionally, as you said below in the comments, you need to connect a power source in order to turn it back on again. I only had to hold the Volume Down button and press the power button once to boot into recovery.
Other than that, everything was the same. Thanks for making it simple.
Yeah for anyone else reading this, one of the newer Steam Deck models uses this black plate instead that's easier to take off. Every other step is the same.
So instead of downloading a recovery thingy you just have to hold volume and power button?
This is very helpful! And this is coming from someone who will unlikely to own a Steam Deck xD
But I still greatly apreciate this because it indirectly informed me that if I do decide to get one, I could easily just get the cheapest 64GB version and add a much larger storage myself. Thanks man.
Quick Question - I didn't see you connect the device back to power removing it from Battery Storage mode. Was this part hidden from the video? I wanted to make sure prior to going through this myself. (Only saw you boot to recovery with power and volume down.)
Yes, I accidentally edited that part out
Hi bro.. i am from India, this video helped me to replace my 64GB SSD with 1TB SSD in steam deck, thanks bro👍
Which ssd You added and tell me if facing any issues.
This ended up being a full 12 hour thing for me. What took the longest was the updating the firmware, it was stuck at around 85%, and stayed that way for, oh idk 10 hours straight. I woke up to it still not moved, restarted it, 5 minutes later it fully updated. But. Yeah if it gets stuck, just restart and try again, shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to update.
thanks bruh! The 2TB's is going to be insane plus 1TB external SD. Install took less than 5 mins (for those who are PC builders this will be so easy it is almost disappointing 😂)
this is about to save me so much money
I actually ended up stripping the screw (i have the PH1 bit but angled it incorrectly since im inexperienced) when I tried to remove it and I'm not sure what to do to remove it due to how little space there is to move inside.
Thanks a lot for the video. Once you install new image of the OS, will Steam recognise the games on your micro SD again, or you need to re-add them somehow?
It will recognise and reload them
@@steamdeckguyAwesome, thanks a lot for confirming!
When it coming to using screw and it don’t working on turn get a rubber band and then try to unscrew will make sure it doesn’t strip the screw
Was that the 64gb eMMC that had the foil wrapped around it? Or was your model a 256gb or 512gb model?
Mine was actually 512GB version - I just used 64GB in the thumbnail 👍🏼
Great tutorial. Your battery level was stressing me out tho
Just used this guide to install a 1TB, worked a treat!! Thank you.
bought a new ssd and waiting for it to arrive. am I correct in assuming I can skip the recovery drive part if I clone my ssd to the new one using an external enclosure then install it physically?
Yes, if you clone the SSD then it should just boot as normal.
Ruined my original SSD by shutting down the Steam Deck during an update process (never do that with any device, i just didnt have a choice), thanks for this video, it saved my Steam Deck. :D
Did you use any programs after your ssd was installed to confirm the size, read and write speeds of the new SSD?
I didn’t bother. I probably would have if I had bought it from aliexpress or somewhere to make sure it wasn’t a dud
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but instead of reimaging my Steam Deck from scratch, is it possible to clone my existing Steam Deck internal drive to the new SSD using the adaptor you showed, and then plugging in the new drive with all my old data already on it? I'm asking because I have a lot of non-Steam games/apps installed as well as Decky plugins and don't want to have to redo everything from scratch on the new drive.
Yes, you can clone the drive. Plenty of guides out there.
i’m having trouble getting the battery cable back in the slot. Any recommendation on how to maneuver it in or a tool to help get it in?
I just used my finger to push it in. Use a bit of force
Ive just noticed your using the same grip case as me in this video is there a dock you recommend that fit the grip case fitted
I’m actually using the satisfy grip case now - it’s not too dissimilar to the mod case. I don’t really use a dock, but previously I was using the official dock with the adapter JSAUX sent me (not sure if you can buy them). Otherwise, you should find most of the JSAUX docks fit the case fine. Even the Ugreen dock is decent and should fit the deck with a case fine. It’s only the official dock that is super shallow and doesn’t work with a case (unless you use the jsaux adapter that I mentioned)
you don't actually need a flashdrive you can just use an mini sd card that you can add to the system as well if you don't want an extra drive just laying around
Yeah, not sure why valve tell you to use a USB thumb drive. Good to know SD card method works 👍
6:56 - Go grab a coffee... lol it took less than 20 seconds :D I cant drink a coffee that fast :D
Make it an espresso 😄
Really great tutorial, you gave me the confidence that I’ll be able to do it on my own, haha.
Also, I’ve heard from different sources that one might need to drain the battery to under 25%? Or it’s unnecessary since we disconnect the battery cable?
It’s all about reducing risk. I’d always recommend following the instructions, but if you are comfortable not doing it then you’ll probably be fine. I think mine had about 40% when I did it.
@@steamdeckguy thank you for the prompt answer! I’ve never done similar so I’ll be as careful as possible, taking the least risk as I can, haha.
Have a nice one and thanks once again!
do i have to do the recovery mode on my deck if it’s already been factory reset or is that only for if you still have your account on it
The recovery mode is to reinstall steam OS. If you skip that step, there won’t be any OS installed, so you won’t make it past the bios screen.
How long does it take to load to the next selection on booting from usb c? I’ve been here around 10mins
Can’t remember. I’d say give it 15-20 mins and if no progress hold power button down until it powers off, and then retry
the usb was old and slow sorted now though thank you@@steamdeckguy
So I followed the steps from steam and your tutorial, mine stayed on the black screen with the cursor for over an hour and then came on to desktop mode. It then had cancel user only and an error came up, which I couldn’t see what it said as it was 3/4 off the screen then went back into black screen with the cursor and stayed like that for another 30 mins and nothing. Any idea what happened?
Did you get it working? Usually a good old fashioned “turn it off and back on again” sorts out any issues
I’m had the exact same problem. I turned it off and started over. Now I have all four options on my desktop. It seems to be loading fine now.
quick question, i forgot to change the power to storage mode before applying these changes, should i be worriued? because i cant turn it back on even after following every step properly....
Have you tried hooking up power and turning on? If it doesn't power on you probably didn't connect the battery fully, assuming you had unplugged it. Make sure it's fully pushed in
If you already had the SSD to USB adapter why not just temporarily install the upgraded memory in there and transfer your drive to a larger partition right from the steam deck? It would save you from downloading the OS again, the tool for Windows, and you wouldn't need to reinstall steam OS, your apps, redownload and reinstall your games, and then redo all the settings.
Yes, you can do that but I wanted to do a fresh install. It also doesn’t take long to get everything set up again.
Could u give me text instructions on how to do that please ? I just ordered my ssd and I’m worried about the re image of steam OS
Can I connect the recovery drive to my Steam Deck using the Dock?
Yes - you should be able to
@@steamdeckguy thanks
It was a scary process. The hardest part for me was putting the tiny screws back in without accidentally letting them fall into the system 😂.
Currently waiting for the reimaging to complete but i think the operation was a success!! Thank you!!
Glad to hear! I was considering swapping the shell, but after swapping out the SSD and Joysticks, I don’t really want to take the back off again…
Can you upgrade the hdd later and than it will make you redo the login and redownload your games right?
You can clone existing hard drive, or re-install from scratch (as I show in this video). If you reinstall from scratch you’ll have to redo the setup and redownload all of your games (except for those installed on micro sd card).
Thanks for the video. I don’t have any pc with me. Can I download recovery image and copy to an usb from my steam deck?
Yes
@@steamdeckguy awesome! Thanks for your help
Im a newb to computer talk but the ssd is just internal storage right? And will i need to back anything up before doing this? Ill have to reinstall am my games again right?
Yes, it’s internal hard drive like a computer. Replacing the hard drive means you need to reinstall the steam operating system as I show in this video. FYI - There are ways to clone/copy the old hard drive to the new without having to reinstall everything, but doing a fresh install is the most straightforward
Silly question but is it required to use a USB drive or can I simply connect the SD to a laptop after installation and use that as a means to reimaging the OS on the new SSD
You need to use removable media connected to the steam deck. Either usb drive or micro sd
@@steamdeckguy I didn't know about being able to use a Micro SD for it. Thanks for the info! I just got a 1tb for my birthday and I didn't feel like buying 30 dollars worth of adapters and wait a week. Your tutorial was very informative and succinct btw. Many thanks.
Is there any way to clone your deck over to the new SSD or do you have to start from scratch?
You can clone existing ssd. I’m actually planning to do a video on it the weekend, but if you can’t wait just search ‘clone steam deck SSD’ and you’ll find plenty of guides
Does reimaging the ssd format it or do you need to format the ssd if its not brand new
Reimaging will format the SSD
Wow easier than I thought. Which brand SSD did you use? I have a 512GB model and it's already low on space. So I am thinking of upgrading to 2GB also but want to same performance as the one that came with my 512GB model.
I’m using the western digital SN740 2TB
Just got the oled model and was wondering if reimaging the os process stays the same?
It will be the same
I need some serious help. I installed the SSD and made sure the battery was nearly fully charged. However, after attempting to insert and flash the OS using my type C drive the Steam Deck won't respond to the power button at all. When i plug in the charger however, it shows the "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed...." The second I unplug the wall charger the device turns off! WTF do i do?
You needed to connect a power cable to get the device out of battery storage mode. Now you’ve done that you should be able to boot the recovery image by holiding volume down and and power button and selecting the USB from the list
What about using Clonezilla or Macrium Reflect to clone disk partitions? This is what I’ve done when I migrated to new machines.
Not tried it myself, but yes, if you don’t want to have to reinstall everything cloning is an option
I went through the exact process however now my controls don't work like only the touch screen and power and volume buttons work everything else doesn't do anything
Usually a restart sorts it
I'm thinking about getting a Steam Deck and this upgrade would be the first thing I would do. Thanks for the video!
Straight to the point and simple! You earned a subscriber!
Is the purpose of using the USB-c port when restoring the SteamOS for speed purposes? You do know that you can use the SD card slot and put the SD card in that slot and when powering on in boot sequence selct that sd card slot and works the same. Not sure why everyone is saying you must use the USB-c port.
I’ve never tested it, I’m just going by the official guidance, but I’m with you on this - I see no reason why you couldn’t just boot from the SD card. Perhaps it’s because valve consider the USB method to be safer? 🤷♂️
so you don't need to redownload SteamOS if you do use this method?
I just got my steam deck today, I have everything I need to switch to an ssd, should I just take it apart and do it? I haven’t turned it on or anything.
I’d swap the SSD before turning it on. You’ll find it will already be in battery storage mode so once you have done it, remember to connect to power - otherwise it won’t turn on
whats the significance of the foil? would it be detrimental if i damage/lose it?
I believe it’s to reduce Wi-Fi interference with the antennas so it’s pretty important. As long as it’s wrapped around the SSD it will do it’s job. If you completely damaged it or lost it then you could just wrap foil around it instead.
Somehow i skipped boot menu as I pressed - button to the end xd 😂 so i made it even faster
Hi I know it’s a dumb question what if I have a mac laptop how do I go about downloading and installing Rufus from my mac to usb ? Cheers
You can use balena etcher on Mac - does the same thing as rufus. Alternatively, you could actually create your boot drive using the steam deck in desktop mode. Again, download balena etcher and then use it to write the image to usb drive
these shield screws are on way too tight for me to get off
I had to use flat head screw driver to remove one screw because it stripped.
Way late but try putting a rubber band between screw driver and the screw.
Hi so I had a question about an m.2 so I tried using a 256gig m.2 that comes with the Steam deck for window and wanted to play this game called Boundary since it won't play on Steam OS and the m.2 got very hot and crashed this is 2230 vs the mod I did with 2280 which I tried running window on that but it still got very hot and crashed I notice with 2280 in steam os it never gets hot while playing most games on steam os do you think due to the fact of no cooling and window taking more ram could this be the reasons it couldn't handle the game on windows any help would be appreciated also 2280 did crash one's should I be worried It did get hot and I tried testing it with fall out 4 and crashed ones
Sorry no idea - I don’t use windows on my steam deck.
i cloned my new ssd from 1 tb to 2tb, why do i have the same storage in SteamOS? do i need to resize the partition
it says its a 1.85 tb in kde partition manager but it does not show the unallocated storage, hmmm..
Yes you need to resize the partition
Can you use a micro SD instead of an USB drive to install the OS on the new SSD?
I’m not sure - you could give it a go.
For some reason only the touchscreen works after restarting it. I started the updates using the touchscren but the controls don't work at all. Any fix?
Just update the steam deck and everything should work like normal.
@@raven1485 Thanks yeah lol after it updated everything was fine
Well, that answers my VERY recent post/question lol. Thanks guys

If you have a guitar pick, or an old driver license use that
During the re-installation process, did your SteamDeck asked for wifi password, or did it remember the wifi password previously?
I upgraded my SSD in my laptop and the wifi was a huge problem for me. During the re-installation, the wifi on laptop just stopped working and I had to use physical cable to hook to my router. Hopefully SteamDeck didn't cause problems with wifi during re-installtion. I'm having PTSD about this for my Steam Deck.
It will wipe everything, so you’ll need to log into Wi-Fi and re-login to steam
Do i need to do the recovery if i switch the SSD before even using the steam deck at all? I have one arriving in abourlt 4 days
Yes, because otherwise it won’t have any operating system installed….
I would test the deck if it has any issues before upgrading. Otherwise you will never know - if something goes wrong - if it had any issues before the SSD change
Are the joysticks/trackpads/dpad all NOT WORKING during factory setup after everything was done, normal??? Could only use touchscreen throughout the entire setup process. Current status, "Starting Steam Deck update download"...
How did you get on? The buttons should work during the steamOS setup. If not, wait for it to finish and then restart the steam deck - that should sort it!

My steam deck is freezing a lot after I swapped the ssd to a tb one. 64gb to 1tb. I reimaged it twice but I did have some probs when updating. But then from the start when I power it freezes but I can hear stuff going on
Did you sort this?
I don’t have a computer currently. Can i upload the os using the SD?
Yes, you can use the steam deck to download and write the image to the USB Thumbdrive. You should be able to use Balena Etcher
Hello friend, it turns out that I changed the ssd of 64 for one of 1 tera sn740 M2 2230 but when it comes to doing the procedure to recover the system, when I select the pendrive where I have the image, the screen turns black and I leave the word error one after another, telling me a series of things that I obviously do not understand. Could you help me? Could it be that that SSD doesn't work? I have already tried sd memory and different pendrives. And he makes the same mistake.
Sorry for delay. Did you sort this?
how did you get that sick steamOS interface?
CSS Plugin! th-cam.com/video/BZRs2GB51t8/w-d-xo.html
My steam deck internals look fairly different.
The fan is upside down (you can see and spin the impeller), the mainboard shield is all black not silver with black sticker, there is no aluminium foil sticker hiding screw and there is no hidden screws at all, the layout of the mobo is all changed, like RAM chips are on the left not right, mounting for the cooler over the CPU is also changed, the wireless module is at wonky 45* angle etc.
Cool. Sounds like they made it better 👍🏼
@@steamdeckguy Yes it was a bit easier to work on it.
I also cloned original SSD directly into new SSD using the command line prompt and dd command so I didn't need to reflash anything.
Would it be possible to use a Microsd card instead of a usb stick?
Yes
it can be done on a sd card instead of a usb?
Not tried it myself, but should be possible. You’d just have to select the sd card during boot
No mention of screw driver size... If I'm honest that would be key as I've heard people stripping the screws
Per the iFixit guide "Phillips screwdrivers can vary in size and shape-two drivers labeled as the same size may fit differently in the same screw. Use the size that fits the snuggest into the screw head."
You can tell if a screw driver fits the screw, if there is slop... Don't use that screw driver, if it's too big and won't fit, dont use that screw driver.
quick question! im tryna switch my 64gb to a 1tb, ive followed all thr steps thoroughly but when i try to boot the recovery image into my steam deck I’m stuck on “Emergency Mode” is there any way i can solve this issue? not sure if the problem is from my SD card or the steam deck itself :’) i searched for solutions online and they said to run fsck but idk how to do that either.. please help!
Are you using usb drive to boot? You should at least be able to boot into recovery mode and then do a full steamOS re-install. If you can’t make it to recovery mode then it sounds like the recovery media you created is corrupted.
@@steamdeckguy thanks for ur quick response! i redid it it again and was able to make it to the desktop, but my icons look different from yours, instead of “Reimage Steam Deck” it says “Reimage Deck.desktop” and it ran on the Kate application instead of the Konsole in ur video in 6:47 any advice?
I reimaged mine but now the face buttons aren't working at all.... any advice on that?
Do you still have issue after a full restart?
Many thanks for instruction but I'm pretty sire you need to pin the message about plugging in power again after assembly cause I'm sure I was not only one who got a heart attack at 6:17 😄

Is it possible to put the recovery onto a micro sd and load it that way if it is large enough?
Yes. You might just need to put it into a USB adapter
Itll work without the adapter

Never tried it - possibly could work.
What is the recovery image part for ?
To reinstall steamOS onto your new SSD
What happens if you forget to unplug the battery before taking out the SSD? It was also done with a brand new steam deck that have never been turned on but I just did it. I'll let you guys know what happens
It’s never a good idea to work on electronics whilst connect to power, and power from the battery will still be going to the SSD. You’ll probably be fine, but it’s not worth the risk of causing Damage for the sake of pulling out one connector
@@steamdeckguy yeah I was fine. It was never turned on either and I don't know if they test it in the factory but I won't forget to unplug you this time
I got stuck around 6:30 I’ve been on the boot screen for over an hour and haven’t gotten to the reimage screen yet, I’m using an old flash drive that might be 2.0 and I’m not sure what’s the problem
Is it doing anything or just showing the steam logo? You can hold the power button down to force shut it down and then try again.
