I love this take, but I'd argue that the lack of reviews or support forums on egs, which is a huge reason I refuse to use their platform, also means people have no easy way to communicate the issues within the game on egs. It's so bad, that many games with problems on egs have had users flock to steam community forums in order to look for support.

@@JasminBeauregardThat's how I thought, too. Then Sonic Colors Ultimate and Kingdom Hearts came to Steam after a long time, only for absolutely nothing to be fixed
When something is broken, bugged, has technical issues, or worst of all: horribly optimized, there's a 99% chance it'll NEVER get fixed. Maybe in live service games that're constantly releasing updates? But not in singleplayer games. Especially ports. They're usually abandoned as soon as they released

    • @JasminBeauregard
      @JasminBeauregard 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@cqllel5186 Yeah... There are sh...y devs out there! More often than not the big names, on top of that. They are really creative when in comes to skim their user base. I personnally avoid them. AAA games have lost a lot in quality, imo, in the last few years. They traded quality for the quick buck. It pleases the investor's board.
All this is one more reason not to buy on day one: wait for reviews, see for yourself if the devs are willing to patch the game and if not, you have the leisure to decide if you want to keep you money in your wallet.
I hate to throw blindlessly my money for any game.

I think Valve should offer incentives (perhaps financially) to game developers to ensure 'Verified' experiences on the Steam Deck and Valve's future hardware ventures. Maybe offer bigger cuts to developers who are fully embracing Steam's features, NOT using their own launchers and have Linux compatible anti-cheat.

No, that version of steam os was bad. Yeah I know that. It failed because that version steam os is very old and was no proton. There was no vulkan yet either. Proton help makes many windows games playable under linux. Before without Proton. It was horrible mess. Cus 90% of games on steam are using dx 9/10/11 and DX 12 now. Few games that had Linux support were using very old and outdated openGL, and very few devs put any optimization into it or OpenGL. 90%+ all devs target Bloated DX 11/12+ now. Thanks ms they killed off OpenGL because it was competition for directX.
Very few games use OpenGL anymore. Valve realized, the only way beat windows, is build your own OS Specifically for gaming. That what they did with steam os (Proton) and Linux. The Old steam os was crap or so I hear.
Windows is and has been Bloatware. Gaming was tacked on since win95. If Valve release new steam box. (Not steam machine’s) and base on what they all leaned from steam deck. It could do well. It could give devs the excuse to start target steam os as standard for pc gaming. Instead of devs only targeting “ windows only bs “
There been rumours Valve has 4k/60fps VR capable box or console like system, using steam os. So yeah that is more then posable with zen 3+ or newer with RDNA3 or newer SoC/APU. Anything 12 to 20 TFlop would be more the enough. 1080p/60 or 1440p/60 native, upscale to 4k/60 is possible.

Sweeney was only partially correct. It's true that there was little room for competition on the basis of user experience, as Steam has pretty much cornered the market in that aspect. But his big mistake was focusing solely on courting developers, while providing subpar user experience. He managed to get a lot of developers on board, but that was temporary as the users did not like his storefront or launcher. In the end, all he did was lose money to exclusivity deals with developers.
For such a bigshot businessman, he seems to have forgot that the money ultimately comes from the consumers. Geting developers on board does fuck all if the bottleneck is still the storefront/launcher that connects those developers to the people buying the products. What he should have done is get the developers on board while also investing in making the user experience better (or at least on par with Steam's).

If Epic added real proper customer support, I'd be more inclined to use them. It's crazy that 20 years later, if you have a problem with Steam, Valve themselves basically has no realtime way to get in touch with them to discuss it. It's better than it used to be, but 'make a ticket and maybe someone will get back to you' isn't good enough for a company like Valve and store/service as big as Steam. There's no phone number or live chat or way to ensure you get a human to respond to you. If Epic did that, I think it could be a big draw.

Support for Linux will increase right along with the userbase, it's really that simple, and thankfully, the last couple of years, mostly due to Valve's efforts, has seen the biggest increase. M$ pushing OS-level malware (recall) with Windows is opening up more folks' eyes to Linux. I made the switch to Linux shortly after I got my Steam Deck a couple of months after it was released. It impressed me that much, and I had never even considered Linux prior to that after being a Windows user since the 3.11 days.

2:33 This is literally the whole reason I eventually got into Linux. I was using an Xbox One controller with Windows 10 back in 2015 and really wanted to use it to do basic stuff like browsing the web and navigating Windows Explorer. It was doing okay until I wanted to customize my button layout. The controller from Microsoft has a horrible default on Microsoft's flagship software. I was getting frustrated with both Sony and Microsoft making products that not only aren't compatible with other products, but aren't even compatible with their own eco system, and paying for said frustration on to of that.
Enter the Steam Controller. If it didn't do what I wanted, I could make it do what I wanted, across eco systems. After finding out how Linux is similar I began my transition.
    Black Magic Design over Adobe
    Linux over Windows
    Valve over Microsoft
It does everything I need it to do on my terms, and I'm paying hundreds of dollars less. I still have times where I'm spending all day troubleshooting, but that's the same for me back when I was paying for the in privilege to waste my time instead of doing it for considerably less money.
    Never looking back.

Another thing is recording raw video uploaded from your computer while you're live gaming. That's three things right there in that last sentence. Steam has great prices, amazing sales and every game made. And not to mention over a billion users every single day because how well well treats us. Epic can go eat itself. Just like EA learned, it's just better to be on Steam.

I'm a new Steam Deck owner, and also new to PC gaming since my main computer is a 2019 MacBook Air, which as we all know, is not a gaming PC. I will eventually plan on getting some Ubisoft games, but one thing that isn't exactly clear to me is whether the launcher is included if I purchase a Ubisoft game from Steam, or if I will still need download and install is separately. I have found plenty of tutorials for installing the launcher, but most of these tutorials seems to be written with the assumption that you are just going to boot up the launcher and install the game to run from there. Is there anything that needs to be done differently with the launcher if the game is bought from Steam? It probably will still be a while until I try this anyway since I am waiting for Assassin's Creed Mirage to be available on the Steam Store.

Speaking of the anti-cheat, I do wonder if Valve could solve that problem at an OS level, being that Valve have full access to the code on SteamOS, if there is a way for them to emulate or translate the anti-cheat code on Windows to run on SteamOS so it can't tell it's running on SteamOS and think it's running on Windows, so kinda like what Proton is doing with Windows games on Linux but not as simple as I think anti-cheats have deeper access on the OS.
Just like Valve found out over the years that getting software developers to support Linux natively is almost impossible to do on mass, well they are seeing the same thing with anti-cheats even thought it should be much easier for developers to do, so maybe, if possible, an automatic solution is needed, so developers don't do anything, because the only alternative way I see this changing is if Linux becomes popular enough that developers can't afford to ignore it, but it would have to become massively popular for that to happen with how many publishers do such bad ports on the PC already.

I think console exclusivity is no longer a viable model for the large gaming companies or studios. Consoles will be in the near future rated on their technical specs and not the games they offer. And so we are moving into a future with a single dominating console for AAA games, much like we have a single dominating platform for PC games. That's futurology for you, but I don't see this moving in any other direction.

Can’t you talk about the rog ally x? I seems it’s going to fully kick steam decks’ butt. 80 watts battery (the main reason I wouldn’t get the ally) now with double the battery, it’s going to be decent, 24 gb of ram which is faster 7,500, 1 TB drive which is easily upgraded (using the normal size SSD) , Much better ergonomics, buttons and joysticks. Same chip, which is good enough, z1 extreme (at least twice as faster than the steam deck’s chip). The screen is LCD but it’s 1080p and 120 hz, and has VRR (game changer). Finally they improved armor crate (which is the software) so that it’s easier to use. Honestly the only reason I would pick a steam deck I think is if I only emulate some light games or play games which are 5 years old, I know the deck’s interface is the closest to a gaming console, but honestly it ain’t that hard opening games on a pc lol. I know this is a steam deck channel but I was hopping the bias wasn’t that strong. Btw, I was going to buy myself a steam deck oled on Christmas but said “I’ll give it 6-10 months, if there is no refresh o upgrade I’ll get the steam deck.” Unluckily, the rog ally x just was announced and it just seems too good for me. I can only find two things in which the deck is better, the fact that the deck has trackpads and an easy to use/direct software (the only advantages). Of course the price is a bit cheaper on the deck, but for 150 more bucks I’ll choose the rog ally x all the time. Hoping to hear something from you!! A video or a response at least. 😅

As a developer, I must say, offering official Linux support for anything is a sure way to lose money.
Less than 2% os the players are Linux users, and over 50% of support tickets are for Linux users... It's "cheap/easy" to make something compatible with Linux, but the amount spent on technical support, overshadows any profit from the game sale.
It's sad, i know, but is the reality, having many variations of the same OS, with different libraries and drivers, make the errors unique to some users, making hard to troubleshoot a solution that works for everyone.
It's easier to just... don't support it officially, and be happy if a 3rd party can successfully port your game.

Maybe people don't want a better storefront or launcher. But they absolutely do want to minimise their use of something that doesn't even come close to baseline standards.

The "problem" with Linux anti-cheat software is it is not kernel level, and I can't see any major distro ever integrating such a huge security hole just to stop cheating in multiplayer games.
I think that's a good thing, even if it means we miss out on games. Surprisingly most multiplayer gamers on Windows are happy to trade full access to their system just to stop cheating in games. I don't think it is an informed choice though... Does the average Call of Duty player know they're giving the game access to everything in memory, like their password manager, a browser tab open on their bank site, all files on disk, etc.?
Plus games like Call of Duty have had several well known remote RCE exploits over the years. Combining RCEs with the game having full kernel level permissions is not good news.

I prefer the OLED Deck but I still think the LCD Deck at $400 is the best bargain for the bucks. In comparison Ally X cost the same as 2 LCD decks which can play a lot of the same PC games. (2 LCD Decks equals 80wh of battery and you can charge one while playing the other)
It's the same a $2000 desktop will naturally outperform a $1000 desktop but a $1000 desktop can play the same games (just not at 4K) which to me is the best bang for the bucks.

0:45 stubbornness but I also wouldn’t be surprised if kickbacks where involved I mean you can’t tell me that they keep using something like denuvo because it’s a great product, the product have been proven time and again to tank a game’s profits as gamers will refuse to by a game that uses it and it tanks the games performance by trashing the PC running it and lastly it’s way to easy to hack, on average your talking less than a day to get into it even its hardest one was like a week.

I prefer Steam over Epic because of two things: Steam has a feature set that no other game launcher even comes close to. And secondly, trust. I simply don't trust Tim Sweeny, he seems opportunistic and sneaky. Putting in a bunch of money into their store front seems risky to me.

I don't have a gaming pc, just a steam deck, but can someone explain to me I always hear people say other stores need to be as good as steam for them to buy from it, but I just add games as a non steam game and they fit right in with the steam library of games. From what I read people won't switch away from steam no matter what cause their libraries are built up in steam with achievements and what not. In fact I've heard people say they install the free games from epic store and never even play them. If steam users won't even play free games what would other store fronts need to do to get people to switch from steam, cause I don't see users switching no matter what other stores do? I'm traditionally on consoles so I'm not biased when it comes to buying pc games. Had I built up my library on steam from years ago I can see how it would be tough to switch over.

it's a combination of what some might call a sunk cost fallacy with the simple fact that no other pc gaming storefront has as many integrations, features, and additional extras to support both game devs as well as their players. An example of this is forums. EGS doesn't even have community pages let alone any built in place for devs to share changelogs,, while GoG forums mostly focus in on CDProjectRed's games as they own GoG. They are also not built into the launcher the way Steam is, and even the newer GoG launcher falls a bit short in community features. It doesn't help that as some have said above, GoG's launcher isn't very well optimized.
