There are many expensive restaurants in other cities too such as Washington DC and Chicago. It’s a Michelin star restaurant of course it’s going to be expensive! There are many cheap and mid priced options in NYC as well. Not every restaurant charges $60 for dinner.

Hi James, your dinner at Crown Shy look very delicious! Thank you for sharing your honest review and experience, it’s truly inspiring and I appreciate your attention to detail for all the dining options you ate. Thank for another great vlog food review 👌🏽. Jose P.
Thanks JAMES! YOU DID A GREAT REVIEW. If they comped the bread and found a extra foot for your chicken it would have been perfect. I could tell you really loved eating here and we're happy for you. Thanks for treating us to this restaurant ❤

What a great venue. I like that it is located in that beautiful building. The cuisine looked pretty amazing. It is not easy to get filled up at some establishments without breaking the bank. Thanks James!
White people usually don't seem to like the foot on chickens like heads on fish, just a preference thing. So maybe they thought he wouldn't want it too
Same here 😂 James has inspired me to try more fine dining restaurants, but the problem is that I'm also pretty picky 😅 I have zero desire to consume caviar, quail eggs, duck, foie gras, liver pate, or octopus lol
I really appreciate your honesty . I hope they see this video and make those little improvements . Everything matters when you spend that kind of money
Great review! I'll definitely check this place out. I never really understood bread at restaurants, I don't eat it so the extra fee wouldn't bother me at all.
They do offer 904 ft.² in this luxury building for 5400 per month which is below the city average and they even have studios for $3900 per month. I believe that is a very good deal for this building and location.
I rarely get down to FiDi anymore, but this did look excellent! You had me at the white negroni, and I'm willing to overlook the Restaurant Week hiccups. Cheers, and thanks for another great review!
Thank you again James. As always I enjoy your style. You take me to places I'll never go and I very much appreciate it. "I wanted that damn foot." lol.
Again, nice video James. I will say this, it seems there are some commenters who don't get the foot complaint. They think because you got something for free, it all evened out in the end. I respect your honest opinion BECAUSE you didn't pander after they gave you a free dish. I think your issue is that not everyone received a free dish, had to pay for bread that is usually free, and the portion size and construction of the dish was misrepresented on Instagram. The chicken is also a 'signature' dish, and the foot is part of the plating which not only adds visual appeal but is delicious. This meal was $72 dollars not counting the drink, still not cheap. So, I'm not sure why people aren't comprehending your mild complaints here. Quick math for the regular menu not counting the octopus dish: chicken, $46 with foot and much larger portion; beef carpaccio, also likely a larger portion, $26; ice cream and churros, $16; and finally the damn bread, FREE. Had you ordered on the regular menu, the meal would have been $88 - the 'restaurant week' menu saved you of a whooping $16 bucks in the end.
Thank you! Well said, I appreciate it! Yeah, those are definitely my issues. I can't give a place a pass just if they generously give me an extra course, which I was definitely grateful for. I'm thinking about how the average diners are treated overall. Still, I really liked Crown Shy and my only issues were with how the Restaurant Week menu was handled.
@@shadowfilm7980 Definitely. Smaller menu selection, smaller portions and then a dessert no one really wants. (And the quality of the food is usually lower because they are using cheaper ingredients with the increased volume of customers). I always find you have to look at the menu's normal prices first (ahead of time) to figure out if there's even any cost savings (most of the time it's maybe a dollar or so, if that). The only good thing is less food waste which is better for sustainability overall.
Not necessarily, the previous week when I ordered off the Restaurant Week menu at Delmonico's, the only portion that was reduced was the side dish, which is normally meant for sharing anyway.
Sadly at 66 I have never seen a open kitchen. How Cool!! Now I can understand prices in these types of Restaurants. Lot's of overhead. Thanks as always.

lol they put the restaurant week screws to you! It’s why I almost never even bother with restaurant week. 12 bucks for free bread lol I always find the portions are much smaller and I wind up leaving still hungry. Honestly, I feel like they all get together and laugh at us after they close and are like “suckers” that said, it’s another great clip! I have been out of New York way too long and have been missing out on good places. I have to live through you vicariously 🎉
Talking about spicing at a Michelin star, I went to a West African 1* (Akoko in London) the weekend before last and they had very well judged levels of spice in their food. I've been to Ikoyi too, but before its second star so can't really compare the two but definitely a cuisine to look out for (Akoko was quite Nigeria-focussed but with sauces and influences from other countries in the region). Would definitely recommend it if you find yourself in London.

Personally, I prefer no foot, but this was your meal not mine😉. I find high end restaurants make it their job to know who may give them a review, in some cases they even have pictures. The drink sounded refreshing, and I’m glad it met with your approval. The dishes looked interesting, however I saw no point placing a few crimini mushroom slices on the carpaccio. Enjoyed the review James, thank you.
Yeah, that presentation is not for everyone. From my understanding, on the normal a la carte menu you can request the chicken without the foot, which is nice that the restaurant is accommodating.

I am not from NY. I live in a rural Part of Germany with above average Michelin Star Restaurants. And the prices for 🎖️or 🎖️🎖️ and 🎖️🎖️🎖️ Restaurants are the same as in NY. But I can say prices have increased by 30% in the last two years…But I don't want to miss these special experiences…
Yet again, another faultless video buddy. Really enjoyed the stream. Would you recommend Crownshy over other restaurants or would you be able to suggest a couple more for me. Much continued success for the future my friend 🙏🙌😊💯👍😊
Great review. I walked in one night and had dinner at the bar. Killer meal. The bread was fantastic but I’m with you on the upcharge for restaurant week. Not cool.
James have you watched the show THE BEAR? If not, I recommend it. It is not only a great show in terms of writing, acting, directing, etc.. It is gives an authentic look into the restaurant industry.
@@Jamesnu The 3rd season will show you the hell it takes to get a restaurant up and running. Apparently there is a lot of division amongst fans about the 3rd season. Personally I enjoyed it. Let me know please when you watch it. I am curious about your thoughts.
In Europe, a Michelin-starred restaurant would never put chicken on the menu. They might put some other kind of poultry on it but chicken is deemed too "common" for such establishments (although I love chicken).
It looked an interesting meal, but I agree the Instagram photo promoting the menu should have reflected the actual dish, and it wasn’t. The place seemed to have a nice ambience and more relaxed. I wasn’t wowed by the dishes, but clearly they tasted great. Glad you had a nice dinner🥂
Yeah, the chicken foot should have come attached considering the chicken is the signature of the restaurant! Overall all three dishes looked fantastic!
I’ve been dining at nyc restaurants for over 30 years and one thing I learned not to do is to dine during the restaurant week. I always avoid the week all together.
I know what you mean, but there are good deals out there. The video I posted before this one was at Delmonico's during Restaurant Week and it was probably the best Restaurant Week deal that I've ever experienced.
They should have given you a break on the bread. It looked delicious though. Something i would have paid for. First time viewing a video from your channel.. nice review. Reasonable price for fine dinning for one.
Since the photo was taken prior to restaurant week that would explain why the photo represented their regular menu. To get chicken with the feet still on the restaurant would have likely had to order directly from the farm - a great expense. Also the majority of western diners would be turned off by the chicken foot. We have chicken feet in Korean cuisine, but I know a lot of people who are not down with eating them. Making a whole gourmet loaf of bread is not only costly, but time consuming. To be fair the restaurant has to make cutbacks to justify the $60 price tag. 1) Many of the diners are not regular patrons. In Toronto's restaurant week the majority of patrons are not regular diners, many do not tip well, or know standard restaurant etiquette. 2) The restaurant has to prepare to flip fewer tables with the 3 course menu and some diners who might lag on their tables. At the end of the day they gave you a free squid dish which was worth more than the cost of the bread and chicken foot. I know you are a very respectful and generous tipping restaurant patron and I am not trying to be confrontation, but I'm sorry I have empathy for the restaurant on this one. I worked in the industry for many years and know a restaurant's struggle to survive is very real.
I understand your perspective, but the fact is the restaurant could've just not posted the picture of the chicken and instead used photos of the other courses that weren't altered.
James, Do you ask for permission from management before recording, or do you just do it and hope they won’t ask you to stop? Also, do you use a wide angle lens when inside a restaurant?
No, but I'm always respectful of everyone when I'm filming. I've never had anyone tell me to stop yet. I wish I had a wider lens. The widest focal length I use when filming is 24mm.
I was there last month. The bread was complimentary and delicious. The gnocchi was really soft and pillowy. We had the chicken with the foot attached. The chicken was good but the sauce was way too spicy.
Hi! I was wondering if they would serve a whole loaf of bread to one person complimentary? This $12 loaf seems massive and oversized for single diners. Do you know by chance?
James, first, love your content...thanks. Dude, the foot though? What value do you think they get from removing the foot? So they take it off your plate, for restaurant week, and then what? What do they do with it? It's far more likely that not every chicken's foot is presentable and as it's not a crucial element to the eating experience, they leave it off. With the bread, totally get your point, but it is priced on the menu and it's fair that they charge for otherwise "free" things when they expect to clear far less on the table. I think it's more egregious to charge $12 for it rather than the charge at all. Great content and thanks again!
Thank you! It wasn't just that they took off the foot, but they drastically reduced the portion size and made a misleading post about it on Instagram. If they hadn't made that post, I wouldn't have been too upset since any Restaurant Week menu is always sort of a gamble with what the restaurant will present.
@@Jamesnu ah, understood. They had looked similar in the video, so must have missed your noting the overall portion being smaller. This can forever be, "the chicken foot" episode. 😀
Great review but a remark/observation: why are they putting the pasta "mafaldine" as the first word in the dish description? Normally it should be: Calabrian salami, sungold, mafaldine". Is it because they are assuming people dont know that mafaldine is a pasta and they are trying to be smart?
those big, (seemingly) raw mushrooms on the carpaccio are confusing to me. Maybe they made sense contextually… but I can’t help but feel like they’re mocking me for some reason…
That's a garbage restaurant that does stuff like that. Anyway, when I was younger (probably about your age) I used to do what you do -- hit all of the hot spots looking for the "best" meals in the city (my city was Philly, though). After a while I realized that most of those places were plastic and artificial and the food was, in the end, just that. Some of it was better than others but, still. Eventually I realized that when it comes to dining out, even (or especially) for fine dining, there's a bar they have to meet but it's lower than you probably think. Beyond that, what makes an evening out at a restaurant is the people you go with. I'm guessing one of your favorite meals was the one you went to with your father and there's a reason for that. Sure, the food looked great. But it was having your dad with you that made it special. Now when I go out I'm simply looking for a place that won't screw it up and that will allow me to enjoy my evening with my family or friends. Restaurants screw that part up all the time. Most of the fine dining places are the worst offenders, IMO. Which is why I now steer clear of all the places I couldn't get enough of back in the day.
Indeed! The company one's surrounded with really can be the most important factor of a meal. Yep, that dinner I shared with my dad the other week was one of the best meals I've ever had!
I enjoy the reviews but with 4-5 mentions/complaint about the chicken foot in this video, it seemed a bit overkill. Otherwise, I appreciate your honesty (just wanted to provide a bit of feedback).
It's alright. I don't need any special treatment. It was definitely nice to get that octopus course, but I always judge a place more so with how they treat everyone.
I have been watching, since it is doubtful I ever will eat in these restaurants, but...sorry, I can't take the constant salute, raising glasses or forks with food at the camera ( us)

I am not from NY. I live in a rural Part of Germany with above average Michelin Star Restaurants. And the prices for 🎖️or 🎖️🎖️ and 🎖️🎖️🎖️ Restaurants are the same as in NY. But
I can say prices have increased by 30% in the last two years…But I don't want to miss these special experiences…
I know what you mean. They can definitely be pretty special.
If I was served chicken with the foot attached I would pass out😂 same goes for the fish with head attached
Fair enough, it's definitely a unique presentation.
thank you for staying critical of the restaurant regardless of the extra course and better table :)
Thanks for watching! It's a good restaurant, it just wasn't the best Restaurant Week menu.
RIP to James Kent, we will never see his like again
Indeed, NYC definitely lost a great chef.
Yet again, another faultless video buddy. Really enjoyed the stream. Would you recommend Crownshy over other restaurants or would you be able to suggest a couple more for me. Much continued success for the future my friend 🙏🙌😊💯👍😊
Thank you! Crown Shy is great, but there's a countless number of NYC restaurants that are worth trying.
Another great deal!!! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Another great Monday review I am glad you did not get the foot (yuck) thank you as always
Haha! Thank you!
Would have enjoyed you watching eating the bbq ribs , which is the most expensive meal but can’t go wrong with that
That wasnt on the menu.
I would've loved to have tried it.
Great review. I walked in one night and had dinner at the bar. Killer meal. The bread was fantastic but I’m with you on the upcharge for restaurant week. Not cool.
Thank you! Yeah, that bar area looked really good!
James have you watched the show THE BEAR? If not, I recommend it. It is not only a great show in terms of writing, acting, directing, etc.. It is gives an authentic look into the restaurant industry.
I have. I still have to watch the 3rd season, but I love it!
That's a shame. Chicken can be very tasty.
@@Jamesnu I agree but very often is deemed too "easy".
Rest in peace Chef Jamal James Kent 😔
Indeed. NYC lost a great one.
I can definitely excuse the absence of the bird's foot near my plate, in fact I would prefer it that way.
Fair enough.
Thank you!
For the want of a foot the battle was lost 😂
Haha!
Yeah, the chicken foot should have come attached considering the chicken is the signature of the restaurant! Overall all three dishes looked fantastic!
I agree! Still, it was a good meal overall!
That’s where they give you the stuff they are about to either feed to staff or throw away.. believe me I’d know
skip the bread first when dining out - eat it last if you are still hungry and you will feel better afterwards ;-)
Fair enough, but I'm always hungry so I eat the bread when I can.
Time to do a series on places with $30 or lower meals. :P
Yeah, I definitely want to showcase some more affordable spots.
Why did you not ask the server why the foot was not attached?
Good review btw
They should have given you a break on the bread. It looked delicious though. Something i would have paid for.
First time viewing a video from your channel.. nice review. Reasonable price for fine dinning for one.
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
$12 BREAD IS ASININE!!!!!!!!!!
Have you gone shopping for artesian bread is always asinine.
Yeah, it's a lot, but at least it was good bread.
That bread alone would be a full meal to some people lol
It was good bread!
@@Jamesnu I respect your point of view.
Awesome job James drop a like for you.
Thank you!
Funny how despite recognizing you they didn’t give you the full bird portion.
The gave him an extra Octopus dish.
It's for the best. I wouldn't want to showcase something that others wouldn't get off the restaurant week menu.
James,
Do you ask for permission from management before recording, or do you just do it and hope they won’t ask you to stop?
Also, do you use a wide angle lens when inside a restaurant?
No, but I'm always respectful of everyone when I'm filming. I've never had anyone tell me to stop yet. I wish I had a wider lens. The widest focal length I use when filming is 24mm.
I was there last month. The bread was complimentary and delicious. The gnocchi was really soft and pillowy. We had the chicken with the foot attached. The chicken was good but the sauce was way too spicy.
Well it was on the side, some people enjoy spice. It was optional for those who can't tolerate any spice.
Hi! I was wondering if they would serve a whole loaf of bread to one person complimentary? This $12 loaf seems massive and oversized for single diners. Do you know by chance?
Nice! Yeah, I was surprised how much bite the sauce had to it.
$12 for bread, that better have been some really epic darn bread. ;)
It was costly, but at least it was really good.
so what did they do with all the extra feet??
It's a mystery!
From what I've heard, a chicken foot is definitely not too desirable. Maybe there's a reason they removed it.
It's not just the lack of a foot, but the portion was also drastically shrunk from the size it normally is.
Thanks chef James Kent ..send a "like" from heaven visit us again for a full experience.
NYC lost a great chef.
5:30-5:50 is about as close to a rage aria as James gets
@@1jesus2music3duke Haha!
@@NooNaN926 Haha! That's a good name!
God bless you sir
Thank you!
The hot sauce for the chicken, sort of looks like a piri piri sauce:)
I know what you mean.
Also . Says 12 for the bread on the top of the menu - you didn’t have to order it .
Great review but a remark/observation: why are they putting the pasta "mafaldine" as the first word in the dish description? Normally it should be: Calabrian salami, sungold, mafaldine". Is it because they are assuming people dont know that mafaldine is a pasta and they are trying to be smart?
Thank you! Yeah, I'm not sure on that one.
James is there any food item that will immediately turn you away from a dish? Anyways great video as always. #jamesformayor
Haha! No, I'll pretty much eat anything. Thank you!
James,I know you were mad about the bread yoh paid for versus complimentary bread. James, you pay for everything. Nothing is complimentary.
What is “new American” cuisine?
I think that's a difficult thing to define. I don't even think I could lay it out in a good definition.
Their satsuma dessert is the best
I'll remember that for next time.
Congratulations on being voted 2024 New York Dominator
Haha!
those big, (seemingly) raw mushrooms on the carpaccio are confusing to me. Maybe they made sense contextually… but I can’t help but feel like they’re mocking me for some reason…
Yeah, it's a little odd, but I enjoyed it.
I think if they gave me a foot attached to the chicken, I would run. But then I’m vegetarian. 😂
Haha!
All the free advertising you gave them. You’d think they could’ve wrote off a $12 loaf of bread…
It's alright. I don't need any special treatment. It was definitely nice to get that octopus course, but I always judge a place more so with how they treat everyone.
I have been watching, since it is doubtful I ever will eat in these restaurants, but...sorry, I can't take the constant salute, raising glasses or forks with food at the camera ( us)
Try Berns in Tampa
That's a restaurant that I really want to try someday!
