I've been to Becco many times and have always had a great meal. I'm not sure how you stay so trim with the amount of food you can eat- good for you! Enjoy your restaurant reviews/videos...always very informative.
If you live a life without a car and do a lot of city style walking it can make a difference. People in the New York suburbs with their cars tend to be more overweight
About 13 years ago my brothers and sister and I hired a stretch limousine and took my parents to Becco for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were so thrilled to go. The food was very good, I remember loving the olive plate that they put on the table. The lunch special that you had was so reasonable! It's so worth it when you consider how expensive anything in the theater district or near Times Square is. I hope your date went well.
The most romantic valentine's meal is the one you cook yourself for the one you love. It may not be michelin perfection but the love makes up the difference.
Hey James! I never go to NYC without a visit to Becco for the Sinfonia I've been going there since it opened and it has never disappointed me - it's amazing how delicious the variety of pastas have been over all these visits - and always beautifully fresh and hot. I can also report that the Ceasar Salad is one of the best I've had anywhere with a bracing dressing that doesn't shy away from both garlic and anchovies And sometime you have to try the Vitello Tonnato - a wonderful version of a dish you don't see that often Becco has such a delightful, convivial atmosphere especially in the back garden room under the skylight - and I also love eating upstairs in the less hectic upper dining room. Another delightful review from a delightful guy
Thank you! I didn't even know they had an upstairs. Yeah, I'll definitely have to get the Ceasar next time and I would like to try a number of the other dishes on their menu. It's really a nice restaurant!
God bless your metabolism!!!!! This video offering uniquely defines when an Italian "Nonna" expressively AND with love DEMANDS for you to "mangia"!!!! Well done & thank you for sharing. This is Peter; out!
Becco has been open since 1993 and I’ve lived in NYC since 2005 and I’ve never heard of it?!? What a steal of a meal! Curious about how full the restaurant got while you were there. Can’t believe this was only $35. Looks just as enjoyable as a $350 meal. Thank you for sharing!
Well it’s extremely common for residents to not know their city. I see comments frequently from other travel videos where locals didn’t even know the parks in their own city….I grew up in Philadelphia and nobody I know has ever been to Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. And that location is basically the birthplace of America and iconic
Like @sunshinesooperman, I've lived in Manhattan for decades and for some unexplained reason, have never been to Becco. Because of your review, that will be remedied next week when three of us will be going. That dinner looks incredible...only to be outdone by your superlative review and presentation. I love the idea of three different pastas. Might ever well be the perfect triumvirate. Bravo!
Incredible! Can't believe I never heard of this place - only been living in NYC for 32 years. I think the most surprising thing is not the price, but the fact that the quality seemed as good as many places where even one serving would have cost you $38.
I think it’s very normal for many New Yorkers to not know the restaurants and popular places. Typically it’s the tourists that know the hot spots better
Hey James. Have to ask you this question... You are always a large tipper, to which I say: kudos to you. I'm from the Netherlands and I love your bit in Zaandam (lived there for 2 years). There is apparently a big difference in staf wadges between our little country and the US. Here they get a decent hours pay. Of course I tip for good service, but I know they are not depending on it. On the other hand, one wouldn't ask for yust plain water for their lunch/dinner. At least buy a soda or something (cup of tea). Cultural differences, like to hear your perspective on this.
Thank you! Yeah, typically most staff at US restaurants don't make the best wages and really depend on tips. If I did have more money I would definitely pair my meals with wine, beer, or cocktails. I feel like good food can really be enhanced with the appropriate beverages. I like soda, but it's almost too sweet for me and would probably turn me off from getting a dessert. At the end of the day, you can't go wrong with water.
“Unlimited” pasta!? Knowing this TH-camr’s reputation for cleaning his plates, this should be epic! James, do you fast for a day or two before these meals?
Have nothing but respect for Lydia and her love of food, she also makes the best dried pasta, it cooks up with just the right amount of starch and it's a true AlDente. Certainly looked tasty! ❤️👍
Now that was eating worthy of me at my most gluttoness. I LOVE BECCO! The cheese is high quality Reggiano, and all the pastas are superb. You reminded me of the authentic antipasto. This place was a launching pad that lead to POSTO. Too brilliant to have lasted.
What a nice place. I think you picked the right starter. A Caesar salad does not sound as good as your anti pasta looked like. They also had a nice variety on the pasta dishes.
I’ve been going to Becco since the turn of the century! Never disappoints. The wine is priced to make sure you have access to great wine at a reasonable price. The pasta is amazing but try the veal liver. Melts like butter!
How timely!! I have been following Lidia for many years on her youtube channel and just made her Chicken Parmigiana recipe this past weekend - and I have to say it was awesome. Was cool to see someone eat inside one of her restaurants - the constant replenishment of your pasta reminded me of going to Fogo de Chao when i want to gorge on meats. Haha. And i must say, you can really pack it away James. As you get older, keep running cause it wont be as easy to stay lean eating that much pasta at say 35/40. In the meantime, keeping eating and producing these great videos!
Thank you! Yeah, Lidia is great and her restaurant was not only really good, but it was a lot of fun! Indeed, I'm a runner for life. It's my favorite way to stay fit.
Hi James. Becco certainly let you get your fill...lol. I knew that Lydia was involved at the beginning of it, but didn't have a clue about her current status. If you feel it appropriate, I would love to see you return there and dine off the full menu. I am amazed at how much volume you can eat, btw. Ciao.
Indeed! I was stuffed after that meal! Yeah, maybe one day I'll go back to dine off the regular menu because it did sound like they had some nice options.
Lidia knows pasta to say the least. I've been a big fan for a long time. Her cookbooks sit proudly in our collection. The food looked fantastic from here.I'm a pasta-holic, so this was right in my sweet spot. What a terrific deal, especially for NYC. Even the bread, spread, and olives looked amazing. Excellent review!!! Thanks James and as always, cheers.
Thank you and cheers! Indeed, Lidia is an icon! Yeah, it's definitely nice to have an affordable and filling option when there are so many costly spots in NYC.
This is one of our favorite restaurants here. Excellent food. Remarkable deal. They’re also vegetarian friendly and will adjust the antipasto and pasta accordingly, so the meat pasta will be vegetarian instead and replace the seafood in the antipasto. Highly recommend Becco, our theater district go to.
Thank you for sharing your dinning out here. The pasta dishes are looking really nice.😊 Yes, Lidia is a really nice chef!!!😊 Yes, there is an Eataly here in Chicago as well. I have been to ours here but I have not been to the New York one yet. But your meal here look good!!!😊
Thanks for watching! It was definitely a good and fun meal. I actually think the Chicago Eataly is better than the original NYC location. The Chicago one is a bit larger.
See, I thought that the New Eataly was bigger when CBS had a Sunday Morning Show with Lidia walking around and talking about what she likes there a few years ago. The way the big grocery store portion that one there being filmed with Lidia and that show's host gave me the feeling of a bigger space in NY. Maybe the two are about the same size? ☺
That looks delish!! Really enjoying your channel. Wouldn’t we all want a restaurant that has servers on the ready with bowls of pasta for you to enjoy. Yummmmm
James, I don't even know where to begin here. Obviously, another wonderful, and loved video review. However... There's more. Restaurant Row is a staple in NYC. It's the only time you'll get me near Times Square without Broadway tickets. Becco is excellent, and I've been there a bunch of times. My mother is friends with Lidia, and we all live in the same neighborhood in Queens. Lidia is a total sweetheart, as is her son Joe. It is a complete shame Del Posto closed, but there were other "factors" there. Luckily, I did enjoy many a night there. You should most certainly do an Eataly tour/review at some time, Joe can be found there often. So, I've never heard you say you met your limit! I'm glad you got that full there! They are awesome people, and you (as always) provided a wonderful review of your experience! Keep up the fantastic work! Cheers!
Thank you so much! Yeah, Lidia seems like a great person. My parents have always watched her show and have some of her cookbooks. It's definitely a bummer about Del Posto. It was one of the best Italian restaurants in NYC. I was lucky that I at least got to have a great meal there once. Indeed, Becco is more than just a great deal, it's a restaurant that provides a great experience.
Their spaghetti sauces are made with RAF tomatoes. A very unique and rare heirloom tomato. Their Parmesan Reggiano is imported directly from the Reggiano region of Italy. At $35 they’re giving their pasta away
I hope there's a gym next door with a discount membership for those who chow down on all that pasta. I love pasta... but... too much of a good thing isn't.
This looks like my kind of place! Sure, maybe not the fanciest food, but bread, pasta, and salad are hard foods to beat, IMO. And $35 isn't bad for NYC. And enjoy being single while you are in this season of your life. There's downsides, sure, but there's upsides too. And now you have me wanting to eat pasta.
My jaw frequently drops with the prices of meals in NYC, but that actually seems reasonable and would be pretty reasonable in any city in the US. And it looks like it was good food!
Is the sinfonia di paste only for dinner? My mother went today for lunch with 2 of her friends. One of them ordered it and was told she could only pick from one of the 3 available.
Hello those pasta dishes look excellent that’s my girlfriend’s favorite food by the way watching your past videos I like watches as well. However, my budget is only around $500 per watch. On another note I lived in Portland OR That’s pretty exciting you ran the Marathon that’s cool thank you for the video.
Thank you! I definitely enjoyed my time in Portland. Yeah, I'm limited too when it comes to spending on watches, but at least there's some nice options with Seiko and the like.
That’s what I thought. I told her it’s supposed to be all 3 on the same plate but she said they insisted her friend could only choose one and was quite rude about it. Sounds like they took advantage of 3 older women.
The problem with this restaurant is that the pasta looks like its not made there. It looks like its volume purchased from a supplier. Also true Italian pasta dishes are light on the sauce as it is done in Italy. American restaurants are guilty of over loading the sauce and this place loooaddds up the sauce. Just not Mr preference for good pasta.
I love pasta, especially the al dente part ; unfortunately, too many different pastas at once, at some point, you will be eating cold pasta. Pasta doesn't maintain heat for a very long time, unlike rice. jmo :: wouldn't it be better to serve the pastas separately ? the ravioli looked perfect 👌 the curly-q pasta looked too watery. the spaghetti looked cold ... but you were there and you loved it. I don't have your manly stomach 😄
Hi James, don't let your date hear that ! Over-priced, poor value ! We're talking about women here , you know , expensive handbags and shoes ! So, you love to eat ? James, you could be eating out at restaurants by yourself for the rest of your life. That's what I had to do because my ex-wife refused to cook, and I put up with it for 20 years. (I did learn to cook for myself and her). By the way, those small tables are intentional. They don't want you there forever at $35 ! And that wall, it'll close in on you if you overstay your welcome. But what a great idea! Lots of tables to give that $35 a bit of scale, and 3 different flavorsome pastas. We could do with this restaurant in Sydney. Thanks, James. Another fine episode.
Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely a neat concept and I do imagine that the restaurant would want to turn over tables pretty quickly to maximize their revenue. At least coming in for lunch on a weekday, it wasn't very crowded and I didn't feel rushed.
Unlimited pasta only makes sense for someone about to burn it all off soon. Maybe if I was in town the run the marathon the next day or just finished running one.
That’s the possible issue. Just one plate is a substantial portion for one person. If you eat large amounts of food as a tourist and you’re not in athletic shape, it can make you drowsy and boggled down and the city doesn’t have many places where you can lay down
You are making my low carb/Keto diet very difficult to maintain, with your AYCE pasta restaurant review. You are like the Devil sitting on my shoulder telling me to do the naughty.
Looks good. But as a Naturopathic doctor and nutritionist, I have to tell you that even in marathons, it's still an aerobic endeavour meaning 99% of the fuel burned is aerobic, which is fat. Only a sprinter, someone past the point of using oxygen, is going to burn anaerobically and go into sugar. Carb loading would just lead to bonking, or hitting the wall. The brain can only go 30 minutes after a carb meal after the insulin hits. But it can go five to six hours or much more on a protein meal. It's a myth that the body uses sugar for fuel. Only cancer cells do and red blood cells. And the red blood cells can get this sugar from protein breakdown alone. Peanut butter (high in coq10 for mitochondrial energy) fish, eggs, veggies high in vitamins and minerals are the best choice for a healthy diet, racing or otherwise. BLood type 0 is more carnivorous as they have more stomach acid. Blood Type A is better with high vegetables and moderate protein. AB is allergic to everything. There is no vegan animal in nature- even the koala eats insects. All animals are either insectivores or capable of eating meat. Humans have canines, chew in a vertical motion rather than circular, and have the shortest GI tract based on their size compared to animals. So yes, we can definitely eat meat! 90 percent of sugar just goes towards fat and water storage- with every animal. And damaging arteries, calcifying them over time. Fat is fine. Just one needs a balance of varying fats. And definitely nothing processed. :) Cheers!! I enjoy a good past meal once every few months!!
Indeed! Thank you for your detailed and informative comment. Yeah, I've heard that loading up on carbs isn't as helpful as people think, but for me mentally, it's definitely something that helps with my race and having a clear head is important for me to do well.
@@Jamesnu I hear you. As my mentor says Dr. Richard Bernstein, only 10 grams a day is necessary of carbohydrate for proper mood. The brain ideally utlizes fat for fuel just like every orgam. You generate much more ATP from fat. It's just a matter of reprogramming oneself to believe sugar isn't powering the brain. Whales and dolphins don't have any fruit or grain and they survive just like humans ideally without carbs. They turn protein into sugar just like humans. It shouldn't be called a ketogenic diet, because ketosis is extremely rare. It's just the proper metabolic diet. But I hear you, we all have our comfort foods. Mine would be a chocolate chip cookie. But don't fool yourself. A bowl of cheerios is more glycemic and produces more insulin than a bowl of table sugar, which is more complex than the crystalline starch in cereal. If you like oatmeal, you might as well eat any other carb because oatmeal has only 3-5 grams at most of fiber. The rest is glucose. Some pastas are lower glycemic than others. I like thick rice noodles in soy sauce, or sesame noodles. But there are so many pesticides in grains, that often Crohns disease or IBS is just a reaction to pesticides and not just the gluten. Nonorganic oils are loaded with pesticides.
1:20 "...and they're all " "Unique" can accept no modifiers. It means "one of a kind". Something's either one of a kind or it isn't. Great review, though 🙂
How in the name of God are you so thin? You remind me of a friend of mine...he's slightly taller but half the width, yet he eats way more than I can. This looked great, solid recommendation and I will definitely be visiting when next in NYC (I'll aim to finish two plates, think that would be my limit).
“And I said Hell yeah” was my favorite part. James I love your appetite and wit, please continue giving us content.
Thank you!
I've been to Becco many times and have always had a great meal. I'm not sure how you stay so trim with the amount of food you can eat- good for you!

About 13 years ago my brothers and sister and I hired a stretch limousine and took my parents to Becco for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were so thrilled to go. I kind of agree but it can make an awkward situation when one person is cleaning the dishes while the other person is on the cell phone
No it doesnt
I agree I feel it when I make Kraft Diner
Hey James!
I never go to NYC without a visit to Becco for the Sinfonia
I've been going there since it opened and it has never disappointed me - it's amazing how delicious the variety of pastas have been over all these visits - and always beautifully fresh and hot.
I can also report that the Ceasar Salad is one of the best I've had anywhere with a bracing dressing that doesn't shy away from both garlic and anchovies
And sometime you have to try the Vitello Tonnato - a wonderful version of a dish you don't see that often
Becco has such a delightful, convivial atmosphere especially in the back garden room under the skylight - and I also love eating upstairs in the less hectic upper dining room.
Another delightful review from a delightful guy

My favorite food channel, James. Thanks for filming the menus in these places too.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
That looks so good at Becco. What a deal for unlimited pasta, and they look incredible. Thanks so much James!
Thanks for watching! Indeed, it's a great pasta deal!
Have eaten there a couple of times. It’s now on my list of favorite places when I visit NYC.
Nice! It's a great place to come back to!
Crazy they didn’t change your plate after each refill.
I guess since it was kind of family style, it made things easier.

Haha! I know what you mean.
Indeed. It's satisfying food for a good price!
Great review!! What a deal.
Thank you! It was such a great deal!
My jaw frequently drops with the prices of meals in NYC, but that actually seems reasonable and would be pretty reasonable in any city in the US. And it looks like it was good food!
Exactly! The prices for the most part in NYC are crazy, but that was no doubt a great deal!
Upon arrival, they ask if your seeing a play, so they can help getting your party out in time. Also, buy the bottle of wine versus by the glass.
Indeed!
James, you're killing me, how did you eat all that pasta? lol 😮
Haha! It got to be a challenge at the end, that's for sure!
That's a great V-Day meal value. My gf and I always go out the weekend after, never on V-Day.
That's smart thinking!
That’s my kind of restaurant, I love PASTA and pizza
It's a great place for sure!
Looks great, however, I could only put away one plate. You, finished 3 full plates, wow!!
Understandable. Even one plate is pretty filling.
I enjoy your videos, and you are usually very well spoken. Please keep in mind that "anyways" isn't a word.
Thank you so much!
Dear Lord that looks so good
It was a great lunch for sure!
You’ll have to hit this place before the next marathon
Absolutely!
You need to come review some restaurants in Boston ❤
I definitely plan to travel there someday.
So push the table out?...you're not in San Jose anymore..lol.
That works too.
Back in my Pharma selling days, in the mid mid90’s . This was bosses go to place for meetings. Love this place. First time I’ve ever seen you full. 😀
Yeah, this was probably the most full I've felt in any of my videos.
He was full on the New Haven pizza video at Modern Pizza
I was full after I went to Modern too.
No glass of wine with your pasta feels like a crime! Haha great video as usual!
Thank you! Yeah, wine would've been nice.
Is the sinfonia di paste only for dinner? My mother went today for lunch with 2 of her friends. One of them ordered it and was told she could only pick from one of the 3 available.
I had it for lunch, but I think that it's also available for dinner and you should be able to have all three pastas.
I need to try this 🎉
It's a must try for sure!
About 10 years ago I bought a $900 Swiss Army watch new for around $400. Sometimes the internet has big discounts in the watch world
Insane great deal!.... glad you enjoyed it....better than some of those $150 dindins leaving ya hungry...thanks for what ya do!
I know what you mean. It's really nice to leave a restaurant with a full stomach and money still in my wallet.
🦸♂️🦸♂️🦸♂️ James, your new superhero name....CARB-MAN!!
Haha!
Imma be honest I feel like I could only eat about $35 dollars worth of pasta in one sitting anyway
Fair enough. Pasta is definitely filling.
Carbo loading for a marathon? 😂
I posted this before you said it. Great minds think alike.
Haha! Indeed!
One correction that was not spaghetti, rather tonnarelli. Other than that I recently discovered your channel and enjoy your videos.
Thank you!
Hello. Can you do a Q and A video
Maybe in the future.
That’s what I thought. I told her it’s supposed to be all 3 on the same plate but she said they insisted her friend could only choose one and was quite rude about it. Sounds like they took advantage of 3 older women.
That's a shame. I'm sorry to hear that.
Pasta yes.
Indeed!
Fair enough.
I love pasta, especially the al dente part ; unfortunately, too many different pastas at once, at some point, you will be eating cold pasta. Pasta doesn't maintain heat for a very long time, unlike rice.
jmo :: wouldn't it be better to serve the pastas separately ?
the ravioli looked perfect 👌
the curly-q pasta looked too watery. the spaghetti looked cold ... but you were there and you loved it. I don't have your manly stomach 😄
They do serve the pasta separately, but whenever one of the guys with pasta came around I went for it.
@Jamesnu ::Oh, I didn't know. It's your choice and your table. Love your videos !
My dream is to get dinner with you in NYC. I’m in Chelsea :)
Thanks for watching!
Just don’t stalk. That can be awkward
I’ve eaten here before a few times. It’s a good deal.
Definitely!
@@Jamesnu not the highest quality compared to what else you can get in manhattan but good value overall. Hope you had a happy Valentine’s Day!
@@alisachamoy225 Thank you! Yeah, it's definitely good value, but it's by no means the best pasta.
It’s a pretty good place. I have been a few times
It's a solid restaurant for sure!
I’m not sure about Lidia but doesn’t her son have a terrible reputation on master chef lol
Haha! I'm not sure. I haven't watched Master Chef in awhile.
How long did your coma last? 😮😮
A while. The next time I actually ate was breakfast the next day.
No wine?🍷?
Not that time. I was all about budget for that visit.
love that place - leave a better tip big guy
It was 20 percent.
Unlimited pasta only makes sense for someone about to burn it all off soon. Maybe if I was in town the run the marathon the next day or just finished running one.
I know what you mean.
That's a bargain! I don't know if I could get past one serving though! That's a lot of food.....
It's definitely a good bargain and it's definitely a ton of food.
Haha! I'm sorry.
Not a negative review, but definitely not a rave either.
The value is something to rave about and the pasta was definitely good. It was just an overall fun experience.
Thank you!
How in the name of God are you so thin? You remind me of a friend of mine...he's slightly taller but half the width, yet he eats way more than I can.
This looked great, solid recommendation and I will definitely be visiting when next in NYC (I'll aim to finish two plates, think that would be my limit).
I think that I was blessed with a good metabolism and I love staying active. Yeah, this is definitely a solid restaurant for pasta.
@@Jamesnu fair. I go to the gym regularly but no marathons like yourself (though I definitely wasn't built for those). Thanks again
How did the date go?
Good. I ended up going on two more dates with her, but we kind of fizzled out.
@@JamesnuWell at least you had some nice time. You'll find the one eventually! Cheers!
Wow, bang for the buck!
Absolutely!
How do they make money?
Probably from other dishes on the menu, and they probably count on people ordering drinks too.
