This is a step-by-step guide & experience applying for Indian Passport renewal in USA during late 2020, early 2021. The whole process is streamlined and for application via post ONLY due to COVID.

VFS has done a very good job of streamlining the process (4 steps)
Step 1: Go to VFS Global site to read instructions: services.vfsglobal.com/usa/en... to VFS website and figure out what category you want to apply
Step 2: Fill out the form correctly on Govt. of India website: embassy.passportindia.gov.in/
Step 3: Come back to VFS Website to create profile (if new) or login to fill form and make payment (with convenient method): row1.vfsglobal.com/IHCUSPosta...
Step 4: Print correct documents & submit your application, documents and supported docs to VFS via Post (FedEx/UPS, etc)

My application got rejected due to following reason. You have to check the ‘Change in existing personal particulars’ when you are providing US address. Hope others don’t run into it.
• Your application is being rejected and returned to you as you for did not select ‘’Change of Personal Particulars’’ on the passport government form, whereas YOU REQUESTED FOR A CHANGE OF ADDRESS ON YOUR NEW PASSPORT

There is one place you provide the wrong information, section: previous passport details, form input file number. You mention that it is the ARN Number. It is not an ARN number. You can find the file number on the last page, the last line of your passport. Hope this helps someone! Really helpful video and helped to fill up the forms with ease. Thank you :)

Hi i have one doubt.when I'm doing passport renewal should i enclose address proof for printable address or current address (printable address is my india address) i didn't changed address while doing passport renewal.

Its exactly the same. All you are doing is delivering the same documents you would have sent by mail, in- person.
Outstanding Video....explained everything in detail. Just one question i have is aadhar card copy mandatory to be sent for a reissue of passport. I have no change in address or name. Also if aadhar card has to be sent should it in black & white or color copy

Hi, thank you so much for making this video its very helpful and just following your steps, I have started the application process to create the account on PSK and completed the E-form to complete the application where I have received the ARN number but never completed the following steps, however now I have few changes in the application like martials status and some errors needs to be updated before I go ahead with next steps to do the filling and send the application and documents. please help what needs be done if you've encounter any of this issue.

Hello there, whatever bank statement that your bank provides or via online portal should suffice. Also to be sure, email the VFS email for queries if needed.

Hello, first of all- what a great job in putting up this together, really helpful!! One quick question- I live in US but can I have my Indian address (address in my current passport) printed in my new passport? I mentioned my current address in the 'other address' section.. Would that be fine ?
Yes you can! You might want to provide some sort of address proof from India to make that happen.
Please do check with Embassy once via email, if option is not available, just take the option that Embassy is comfortable with, as address proof require certian elec or gas bills in your name, which is hard for us as we dont live there any more.

Hello, great video! quick question though, if I want and use my Indian address as printable address and current US address as other address in passport application form in govt website, to which address the new passport will be sent? And what is the recommended way?
It’s best to have the current US address as your primary address. But if you choose so make sure the senders address on the VFS payment and the physical packet have your US address so it’s delivered to the right place
HI VK! Super helpful tutorial. Thank you very much. I need one clarification. It's on photos required. The VFS ADULT Checklist asks for two photos, size 2" x 2" - one for govt. form, the other for Change of Appearance affidavit. However, the govt. form asks for photo size 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm. Which guideline should i follow? I am applying for Normal passport re-issue this week. Thanks in advance. Regards.
Standard photo size is 2 by 2 passport photo for all applications

Thanks for a great informative video. Question- nobody is willing to notarize PR card and some of the other documents requested to be notarized. What's the trick? Have been to banks and many mailing locations. Also once we submit the app, does it need to be mailed out in a certain amount of time before we have to repay? Sounds very inefficient for everyone. Thanks for your help!!
If it’s mentioned self notarized you can do it yourself. I don’t know if the changed the rules to get full notary on all these documents

One quick Note: Ensure you have the Passport online has the first page , all the data if pre filled ( Where you attach your photo). I had faced with being blank when downloaded from Chrome. Using Safari solved the issue in my case.

Hi, you can do this if there are. Appearance change is mainly if passport is almost 10 years old and you look a whole lot different from the previous picture. Hope that helps.

Hi, I've just submitted my passport renewal application to VFS, providing my original Indian Passport along with the application. I wanted to check if I need to retrieve my passport after submission or if they will retain it until the processing is complete and send it back along with the new passport.
Did you handwrite / fill the top header boxes in document checklist? PDF editing is not allowed in some PDF readers?
I filled in with Fill on almost all the fields, hand wrote where PDF editing was not allowed

Hi there, I am trying to find answer to below questions and found this video. This topic has not been covered in your video, however I want to check if you have details around this.
1. I am planning to go in person and submit the application, is it still an option?
2. If yes, do I need to pay the $90+ fee online or can I pay it in person at the VFS Global center? (because, when filling the details for paying fees, it is by default showing POSTAL and not in person.
If Covid restrictions have been curbed down, VFS site will mention it. Will check it out. If it’s not showing in person option. That means they don’t do it in person option. Hope this helps.

I had a question. So I mentioned my adhaar card number in my application but the address on my adhaar isn’t the same as the address I mentioned in my application. It doesn’t match. I have already submitted the passport and couriers fees but haven’t mailed the physical documents yet. Will the adhaar be an issue? What should I do? Should I send in a new application and pay the fees again? If I do that, how do I delete the existing one?

Hello, Thanks for the video .On my application form the consulate says houston(I selected Houston at the time of creating profile in passport seva webste) but in VFS It says I should be sending to SanFransico. I didnot find an option to change that consulate even after creating a new application. Now I have two applications sitting in passport seva website with Houston as consulate at the top. What do you suggest here?

Depends on what you want on your passport. Most likely they will print current residential address on you last page.
Hello sir, I have question regarding notary. On name change affidavit they have written in checklist like both notary and applicant need to sign and and notary will do stamp. For valid legal status and residential proof they said only notary signature and stamp needed. But when I visited notary in public library, he said applicant also need to sign on legal status or residential proof then notary will sign. Is it fine if I sign on that two documents. I am asking because in checklist they didn't mentioned for applicant to sign on that. Hope u understand my question.

Latest passport which is about to expire. As that passport will have already details of old passport

Online Application form: because passport number is missing letter "H" my question is when I resend the application with the courier do I enter the new ARN number or the old ARN number to get the courier label?
You might have to do new i think as once ARN number is generated. No changes can be made

Does a minor addition to the indian address like Building B to Building 5B considered an address change, the address on my old passport did not cover building number in it.
Please once confirm with the Embassy or VFS because. If police vérification needs to be done. They won’t be able to get the the right address if there was a change. Hope this is helpful
Hey, Very informative video. Thanks for uploading it. I just finished payment in vfs global but don’t see any payment confirmation or FedEx label in mail. Also download courier labels section doesn’t retrieve my application details. I can retrieve incomplete application but that doesn’t give any option to re-enter payment details and has application confirmation letter with payment status as paid. Can you please help with further steps?

Didn't you give US address to be printed in the .gov website? In that case should we select "Do you want to change your address" in VFS website at the timestamp provided 23:39 ?

Never staple documents. It’s says in big red bold there buddy to not stamp documents. Just FedEx is as given by them and things will be fine 😀😊.

My name is Tsering Deskit and on my passport this is under my given name and my surname is empty. I want to split my name as Tsering as first name and Deskit as last name. Any idea/suggestion on opting for splitting my name or to choose change of name? Thank you in advance!
I think on Indian Passport it’s written like that even when I had one. But in US documents you can have your name split as you want.

In VFS offered Services, it shows FEDEX to me and selected that and made the payment. In checklist, fee payment option shows fedex prepaid label is not accepted. I am confused now , can I still send the package to FEDEX? Please help

Thank you for this step by step video. It cleared a lot of doubts. However, I still have a query. While adding new customer details on the VFSglobal website, it asks for first name, middle name, and last name separately. But on the passport, the given name field has first and middle name. So my question is whether the First name on VFSglobal website will be the given name that is on passport? In that case the middle name field will remain blank. Or do we just put first name in the first name field and middle name in middle name field?
Either should work as VFS is only for payment process.

In the document of affidavit for change in appearance what address should be filled in column of ‘resident of’ India address or USA address?
Current address is what I put
Can the annexure forms be hand filled in capital letters ? Also in place where we don’t have anything like surname can we write an N/A or should we leave blank ? Please let me know . Thank you
It can be filled in Block letters. Just a - should also be fine.

1) Could the Annexure E and change of appearance form be hand written? Either it does not allow to enter the information or some fields are being cut - off if I try to print the filled forms.
2) Are the birth certificate or school leaving certificates mandatory?
For 1 you print the empty form and fill the blanks by hand.
For 2 please follow the checklist to see what’s mandatory and what’s optional. That’s my best bet.
For the appearance change do I have type in the information or write it out ?
You can if you are doing the affidavit. If its cosmetic or for example a young kid looking different once they've grown up

I applied within 6 months of my expiry date. do it much before your travel date so you have you can travel with peace of mind.

Hi, a section where it asks have you ever applied for passport but not issued, back when I initially applied for passport for first time in India, it was sent back due to some address verification delays, so I reapplied and got it. Should I mention yes in that scenario?

Where you live right now in USA will be that address to be printed and not india address on renewed passport as it’s done outside india and is tied to the respective Indian embassy/Mission/Consulate.

Place of Birth @ 25:57 should be City, State as per passport but not just a city.
hello sir, you really did touch most of my doubts that I had on top of my mind, but i need to ask, would you happen to know about the validity of the FedEx label generated from VFS? I've filled out my forms and got done with the application, paid on 30th of March. However, I was not able to send my documents due to some reasons. Do you think the label would still be applicable if I were to send it tomorrow? Thank You
Thanks Rohit, label should still be valid. Go to VFS portal and see in the download label section to see if it’s still there. A good step here would be to download pdf on your local machine.
Print the label and before sending it, check the rules once if they have a expiry on the form filled on govt website if it expires after 90 days or 180 days etc. Email VFS customer service support they should also be able to help and respond via email.
