    I agree with most of the people here. The old veteran has some important features that makes it superior like it’s weatherproof, has a microphone jack and high resolution mode, just to mention fews.

      If you don't use high res mode(don't plan to shoot w a tripod anytime soon) and use this for photography only, and you don't care for weather proof the newer camera is better. Especially if you're a novice

    In my tests the E-M10 III produced noticeably better jpg's when using high ISO from 1600 onwards. That's why I use it instead of E-M5 II. But I am missing the mic input jack. Also I noticed better autofocus with 121 focus points in the E-M10 III

    This was an interesting video. I would give image quality to the 5 Mark ii because of its high res mode. Also weather sealing gives it a huge advantage over the 10 Mark III.

    On IBIS, you gave the nod to the EM5 MkII, when both cameras have 5 Axis IBIS. How can the stop advantage be better on the 5 as compared to the 10 when these features are the same for both?

  • @geraldbraun6267
    @geraldbraun6267 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Thanks for a great and entertaining video, but I would rate the E-M5 MKII higher because it is weather sealed and in dealing your last point ( image quality ) it has the option of the high rez mode, which I know you mentioned. The weather sealing is important to me as I have been caught in down pours and I don't worry about my camera as long as I have a Pro lens on.

    I would call it a tie, as you gave a point to the em10mk3, for a flippy screen, but i think most people prefer the fully articulating one, not just for video, but for high overhead shots. Also the weather sealing, on the em5mk2 is a big plus.

    Peter, I just bought the EM10 Mark iii but have yet to open the box. I keep hearing that the EM10 mark iii cant adjust exposure settings in the Advanced Photo mode. I dont understand what people are talking about. I want a camera that allows me to shoot excellent macro photos and now I am worried that the EM10 mark ii might have been the better choice than the EM10 mark iii, IF, the mark ii allows me to control more functions in Advanced Photo mode versus the mark iii. Could you please explain what is limited in the mark iii versus the mark ii in terms of the advanced photo mode? Thanks.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The advanced modes are a bit limited on the E-M10 MKIII. You cannot adjust everything as you said. I am afraid that in that sense the E-M10 MKII is a bit better. What comes to macro you do not need to use the Advanced mode, just use any Shooting Mode.

      It is a hard choice. I would choose the E-M10 MKIII for your use. But have you considered a used E-M1 MKII? That would be even better. What it comes to the lens choice. 12-40mm f2.8 Pro is better for the things you will photograph.

    Hi Peter, interesting video. Isn't the E-M5 MKII all metal construction? The little flash that comes this camera is the same that comes with the E-M1 MKII, BTW. I find this little flash very useful for small spaces and very handy to carry. The other thing I like about the E-M5 MKII is the articulated screen because it can be used in portrait orientation AND it protects the screen when flipped back with the screen to the camera body.

      Peter Forsgård I would compare against the other telezoom Lenses: Lumix 100-300 and Leica 100-400. This two Lenses have OIS and both are weather sealed. But anyway, the Oly is a very interesting option because of the size. The Oly is also very light, and 75mm (90cm minimum Focus distance) is also a plus! Best Regards from Germany Peter

    • @LarryFasnacht
      @LarryFasnacht 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have this lens. I also have the 40-150, which is outstanding. But when I went on a long vacation with lots of travel, I took the 75-300. Here’s why; weight, weight, weight, size. The image quality isn’t even close to the 40-150, but here’s what I found out, most of reasons I wanted to use the longer lens were to get more range, not just closeups and portraits. When it came to the image quality at longer ranges, the atmospheric elements pretty well equalized the quality I was getting from the two lenses. I love the 40-150, but for travel, the 75-300 gives similar results at long distances, and good enough at closer shots. And I’ll carry it as it is MUCH lighter and smaller than the better quality lens.

    • @TITAOSTEIN
      @TITAOSTEIN 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LarryFasnacht I agree. The great virtue of the M43 system is compact size and weight. I have the Pana Leica 100-400 and the Oly 75-300, and it's the same with me. For short trips or weekend trips I take the Pana leica. For long walks or trips I take the oly for the same reasons as you ... weight, weight, weight and size. Oly is considerably smaller even compared to the panasonic 100-300. In relation to the Pana Leica 100-400 the difference is enormous. I also appreciate the fact that the wider side is 75 vs 100mm. Thanks for the comment. Greetings from southern Germany.

    Round 4 - the LCD screen: on the EM5 you only showed the screen opened out fully. One of the great advantages of the articulated screen is that you can open it out to 90 degrees from the camera so you can be looking down at that with the camera pointing at right angles to where you're looking. Very handy, either with a tripod or handheld, for taking photos with the people passing through the scene unaware tht they're part of your photo. EM5 wins this round for me.

My next M4/3 will be a used Olympus OM-D, but it's so hard to choose between the various E-M10s and E-M5s. I'm leaning E-M5 Mk II, but it has to be silver and black. I don't need my M4/3 camera to do 4K because I use a Canon R50 for that.

    I was so hoping for the EM5 II to win - and also hoping that the EM5 III is quite a while away from being released. The reason; I just purchased a new EM5 II, upgrading (downgrading??) from a Nikon full frame camera and lenses. I am amazed by the build quality of the EM5 II and lenses - the 7-14, 12-40 & 80-150 Pro lenses. I did not expect the image quality to be anything like the Nikon because of the smaller sensor but was pleasantly surprised. It may be a while but at least with really good lenses, I will be able to upgrade to the EM1 or EM5 III if and when it is released - time to trade in my Nikon equipment. In the meantime, I'll enjoy getting to know the EM5 II. Love your channel Peter.

    Like most here, I would lean to the E-M5 because I would have a) a weighted scale b) as you show things like handling can be changed c) yes, you can lose or forget it but the flash is better -- it can bounce after all. I care less about video and you can find them used/refurbished for a great deal as my preference would be a E-M1 but right now I would rather invest in glass with the hope that an update will come to the E-M1 (though the X limits options). I have actually been thinking back and forth on the E-P5 vs. the E-M5 and the Pen's lack of a viewfinder or the ungainly attachment seems to tilt things to an E-M5 also. On the Processor and Image quality, unless they radically changed the algorithms the only thing the processor typically adds is speed of processing so the image stacking algorithm would run faster -- it is affecting for instance the video quality. Solid stuff as always

  • @ordinosaurs
    @ordinosaurs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's an interesting comparison but it paints half of the picture. First there are glaring omissions on the E-M10.3 feature list. IMHO, the worst is the silent mode being a separate mode from the usual PASM modes, so you can't use the electronic shutter in A mode for instance. This is bad. I'm glad now the camera can remote control flashes, it wasn't the case on the original retail firmware. Still, I believe there's no provision to assign the L-Fn button on pro lenses, and most functions are almost hardwired to specific control. In fact, feature for feature, the E-M10.2 is a better camera than the 10.3, except for video. But for stills, if I only had one camera, I'd stay with the older model. And both have an OLED EVF that's more flattering than the E-M5.2 LCD unit.
    Now, the E-M5.2 is in another league altogether. First, it's weather resistant (which you omitted from your comparison), and that's already a huge advantage. Second, it accepts an active grip and a power booster underneath for a much longer autonomy. That grip gives two more buttons to access a direct function, too. The camera has microphone input for video, and headphones output for levels check on the grip. Again, an important point over the 10.3 which has no sound i/o for video whatsoever, which if you're serious about it (and selecting a camera because it does 4k implies that), means you need an external recorder.
    Finally, the E-M5.2 shares batteries with the E-M1.1, the Pen-F, the E-P5 and the E-M5.1 so if you happen to already have one of those cameras, you only need one type of batteries.
    So, to conclude, I'd say for a single stills camera used primarily in a urban setup, I'd have a E-M10 mk II. But with multiple bodies and a more remote shooting location, farther away from civilization and electricity, I'd take the E-M5 mk II.
    At some point, I had a 10.2, a 5.1 and a 5.2. After much deliberation I sold the 10.2, because there are more commonalities to leverage between both the older and the newer 5. I regret moving the AF point with the thumb on the rear screen with the camera at eye level of the 10.2, but otherwise, it works great.

    Peter! Thanks so much for doing this video! That said, there is one feature (advantage) that you did not mention in this video. And it's only found on the E-M5 II. This was actually one of the main reasons I ended up with the E-M5 II instead of the E-M10 III. And that feature is weather sealing. I decided that I wanted a camera that I could take out in a mild drizzle or in a dusty environment and not worry about. The other feature that drew me in was the Hi-res mode. But I have to admit I barely use that feature as everything really must be very still to actually get any benefit from it. Also, I agree about the articulating screen vs. the vertically flipping screen. My other M43 camera is an E-M10 I. And I really prefer that screen style for normal still photography. Anyway, thanks again! :-)

    Very interesting to see the differences between the two cameras. I think that unless you are regularly shooting video and need 4K, the older em5 Mk II is a better option. Weather sealing is reassuring, and would make more sense because of the ability to choose a 14-150 or 12-200 for a grab and go kit, both lenses also having weather sealing. These all in one lenses won't be for anyone, but they would be great for travel and you wouldn't have to worry about light rain ruining your camera! Seems somewhat logical to pair both a weather sealed body AND lens together. In the future I hope to visit Chernobyl-one place you need some protection for a camera! The Em5's small, strong compact build and weather sealing are qualities that I would personally rate higher than 4K abilities. Anyway, HD video is still very popular with the masses-and from what I see the, EM5 is a competent performer! Also you have proved that 16MB picture quality is still more than acceptable, and is not simply reliant on the number of pixels the sensor has. What's more there are a lot of great deals on the EM5ii now, either body only, with 14-42 or even the 14-150mm! Even these combinations make far more sense than paying £500+ for a compact camera to me! I have a Panasonic GX80 with a 12-32 lens which is now used as a compact as it is so, er, compact (and has 4K too) ! Thanks for your excellent video as usual.
