  • Olympus shocked the photography world with their launch of first ever OM-D, the E-M5. I truly believe this was the "WOW" camera that changed the landscape of camera making. I am rediscovering what made this E-M5 such a WOW camera.

    I purchased my E-M5 Mk I brand new back in 2012. I traveled all over the world with it and it captured many beautiful memories and major life events. It has performed flawlessly all these years. The original E-M5 has served me so well that I am still using it today as my primary camera. I really do not feel the need to upgrade. It is a true classic.

      It is amazing how the E-M5 can still perform so well today!

    The EM-5 and EM-1 Mark II, to me, are two of the most revolutionary MFT and mirrorless cameras ever. Maybe the EM-5 even more so because you have a rugged camera for street photography for the first time where you can shoot in any weather. It's still great.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I personally think E-M5 is a gamechanger, a pioneer for mirrorless system, but E-M1 was the one that made it to the legendary status.

      I agree, Still using my first-generation EM-5. I also love the EM-1 Mark ii, although I have a newer OM-1 I think the EM-1 Mark ii is just as good in almost any situation. I took OM-1 and EM-1 Mark ii to Antarctica, and I can't find any difference in the images.

    I got this camera a month ago to try out photography as a hobby and WOW for just 150 euros body only second hand it is a steal. I now make pictures of student life and people around me are amazed with the quality, even requesting me to make pictures for them. Using the sigma 30mm f1. 4 lens. So happy to have come across your channel, bought the camera, and having found an amazing new hobby. Thank you! ❤

    It was the Olympus 5 axis stabilization that made me switch from Canon after 40 years and I've not regretted it. I've never owned the E-M5 as I started with an E-M1 II but I might just have to get one to add to my Olympus gear.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      E-M5 was the first introduction of the 5-Axis IS, and the E-M1 Mark II kicked it up 2-3 notches higher. Yes, I agree, image stabilization is critical for my photo-taking, I am not going back.

    I have used Nikon and Canon Cameras for years. I stumbled over mirrorless with the EM 10 III and was astonished by the size and image quality. When the EM 5 III was released, I bought it and that was and is my Wow-Camera combined with the 12-45 f4 Pro. Recently got hold of a used EM1 II and am very happy with it.
    Your channel along with that of Peter Forsgard taught me a lot about using these little gems. Thanks for that. What I absolutely love about Olympus EM5 and EM1 combined with the Pro lenses is the weather sealing. No need to panic in bad conditions, but just continue with "shutter therapy".

    I got this camera recently out of nostalgia for the older film camera that my father had. I wanted something that would emulate the beauty of those older ones. As you said, it pays homage to those earlier Olympus cameras of yesterday while still being a great camera twelve years after its release. Great blast from the past, Robin! I had one too. Loved it! Question for you: I still have an E-M1 II and an E-M10 II - would like to pick up an E-M5 to round out my Olympus gear - so my question is which E-M5 offers the best IQ and processing - which is the best value (M5 II, M5 III or new Olympus System OM-5). Is there something special about one of the versions over the other? Which is the Goldilocks E-M5? So glad you are still shooting and sharing your therapy with us!

    I've owned the E-M5's cousin the *PEN E-P5* for a few weeks and... wow, I just love it. I also own the Panasonic LUMIX G9M2 and it's a far superior camera in just about every way to the E-P5, BUT... the E-P5 is far more FUN and is no slouch. I have already taken multiple amazing shots which I'll enjoy for years to come. I sincerely hope Olympus (OM Systems) and Panasonic always remember the formula got them on the map.

    Hi robin, i got my first Olympus M43 camera in 2017 thanks to your videos. It was a toss up between the Em5 and the em10. The em5 was silver just like yours, but i ended up buying the em10 because of the pancake kit lens for it's compactness.
    I now have a 6D, a D3s, D300s and the little Oly, and i think i love it so much it's going to stay even if it ever stops working...

    I've owned my E-M5 Mk II since 2017 and am only now reaching the limits of what this camera can do. It is so much like my Olympus OM-1n and OM-2n film cameras. Even the power switch is in the same place. I only wish is was a little larger, but only as large as the original OM film camera. It is a bit smaller, and for that reason I use my PRO zooms with the grip. I will probably be upgrading to a E-M1 Mk II or III soon because the small sequential buffer on my E-M5 is too small for what I want to do next. Great video! Thanks for showcasing the E-M5.
    edit: I owned a E-520 before the E-M5 and it had 5-axis image stabilization in the 4/3 DSLR format.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Mike, appreciate the comment and sharing of your experience. Yes, the E-M5 was perhaps a bit too small, so Olympus came up with their first PRO mirrorless camera, the E-M1! Definitely, the E-M1's much beefier grip makes a huge difference. If handling is important to you, maybe you can look into E-M1 Mark II, it is about the same as the E-M5 Mark III in asking price, but has some cool tricks in its sleeves!

However, I don't think we will get a WOW camera from OM Solutions. It's not the Company, but we have almost reached, I think, the pinacol. Unless there are major advances in sensor technology these cameras from OM Solutions could be mostly the best since there isn't much more to advance from any manufacture. I hope I'm wrong. My E-M1x and E-M1iii already focus as fast as I can expect, give me superior color, size is amazing, lenses are superior, handling is amazing, my clients are happy, what else can I say. One of my finest portraits was taken, handheld, with an EVolt-300. I took a couple quick shots of a model lit by only one modeling light off a 5-light studio strobe system. 8mgpxl, kit lens, and great color and sharpness on a 26x21 inch print.
    Since then I've had the E-500 and then moved up to the EM5Mkiii, with adapters to use my old 4:3 f2 50mm Macro and f4 7-14, plus legacy glass telephotos on up to the 600mm f6.5. Got to love the IBIS keeping those big tele's relevant when handheld. I found a 1000mm at a good price, but it was not sharp . . . maybe just needed an overhaul, but the seller was good enough to accept a return.
    Last week I bought the EM1Mkii, just to have the extra memory and not have to switch lenses on the fly, just switch cameras. That extra grip makes it the 'go to' for telephoto handheld, and that big 7-14 f4.
    While I favor 4x5 and my 50mgpxl MF digital, that EM5Mkiii with the 14-42 pancake allows me to take a great camera anywhere, anytime.

After the EM-5 m1 I added used a OM-D 10M2 that felt better to use, and lastly an OM-D 1 M1 with vertical battery grip, The only thing I miss now is all the improvements to Olympus OM-D Ver 2,3,4 of hardware feature and better and faster processors, plus OM-D 1 duel memory card slots.

      I actually really liked the E-M5 Mark III. Most of the videos in this channel (including this one) was filmed on E-M5 Mark III. It picked up on the failure of E-M5 Mark II to do video well. E-M5 Mark III finally has 4K, same stabilization can capabilities from bigger E-M1 Mark II, but packed in smaller body. The AF for video is almost fail proof. I understand if you don't need it for video, but from E-M5 Mark II onward, the E-M5 series has pivoted toward the video direction, and E-M5 Mark III succeeded.

    I still use them; yes, I have TWO (I'm a prime lens guy; using mainly one with a 45 mm & another one with a 25mm)... I miss the focus peaking and the PDAF of the newest cameras but it's still a blast (even if I calibrate my shots, I do enjoy the color science of the JPEGs; vivid but not flashy as the APS-C Sony NEX 5n/7 available at the same time).
    These cameras were built like a tank (the Canon 5D Mark III or Fujifilm X-100 original felt fragile and too noisy for me). I also often use the additional portrait grip (+1 battery).
    The ISO performance is still quite low but the gap between them and the PEN EP-2 was huge (especially for the AF, DR & touchscreen)... To be honest, nowadays on the second hand market, a E-M1 Mark II is a better investment; but there's an overall quality in this original E-M5 that made me not to sell them. Olympus is dead, long live Olympus!
