The Mercedes EQS has a huge 120kwh battery and promises big range but what will it do under real-world conditions? Often the range isn’t as much as manufacturers claim or WLTP testing so I’m keen to cover some miles and see what it will really do!
The Tesla Model S Long Range Raven has always been the king of the long distances so will the Merc trump it this time? Will it’s crown be taken?
We drive these cars side-by-side in convoy in real-world conditions including plenty of traffic jams so we can directly compare their efficiency and range.
Plus along the way I will tell you about all the key things I like and also DONT like about the EQS.

EQS on 22-inch wheels gives you 50 miles less range compared to the 19-inch which I believe the Tesla had. So actually apples to apples the EQS is more efficient even though it's heavier and uses more energy to properly cool the cabin etc. Impressive car. BTW, if you prefer a more normal screen layout then save some money and don't get the hyperscreen.

@@noproblem386 True, by my calculations based on these results (not going to go through them here), the EQS RWD VS Model S LR Dual Motor are evenly matched efficiency-wise if driven on the same size tires, however, as you mention, one is AWD and one RWD, so the Tesla still wins the efficiency race. The EQS goes further though, because of the larger sized battery. In that aspect it can be a little less efficient and still "get away with it".
If your main concern is getting from A to B, Teslas are hard to beat. But they certainly can't measure up to alot of other EVs when it comes to comfort and "luxury". That's the price of efficiency i guess :)
The Mercedes’ also has things like all wheel steering, proper massage…… that adds considerably weight
Yeh comparing to a 3 year old car with 50,000 miles then recounters that. You will never get a direct comparison as there will always be something different.
Tesla's in general in most circumstances will be more efficient. Other manufacturer's have used larger battery packs to counter that so the full range won't be very different.

Biased comparison. The EQS is more efficient. The Tesla have 19 inch wheels while the EQS have 22 inch wheels. The EQS would have done over 400 miles with 19 inch wheels in pure comfort. The Tesla should be compared with the EQE which a similar size car. I own a model S pre Raven. I’m getting 340 kWh per mile on average. Right ow in the winter I’m getting around 220-240 miles. Would be nice to see someone whom is not Biased compare these cars. I’m hoping to get an EQS next year, if i keep my model S I may do a honest comparison

The braking thing is totally down to habit - when I got my EQS after being used to an MS and Polestar 2, that happened to me too probably because those two cars are a little less refined. I did get used to it and can stop without the jolt now.

Great video. Love the real world range tests, especially when you show the wounderful english landscape. However, how comfortale is the drive with the wide cars on narrower A- or B-Routes?

Awesome job Richard. This was a facinating comparison and had my attention like a blockbuster thriller.
I had to keep leaving it due to real life interventions, I even ended up lying in bed musing over the end result. This morning I managed to finish watching it.
Your honesty and frank approach are great strengths to this sort of video.
You can tell your ingrained admiration for Tesla products, but you still give competitors appropriate praise where due.
You even avoided some of the Tesla's major strengths (performance, continuous updates, MCU) as you were focussing on the videos aims.
As well as informing and entertaining us all, you engender great trust through your honesty.
As I have said before, if/when I need stuff done to my S I will be calling you first!
After following EVs for 30 years I never thought id see the day when we could can the energy needed to make electric cars travel and perform but here we are doing a back to back testing of the bleeding edge of incredible two machines.
BTW been running a Tesal P85 since 2014, now 125,000 uk miles so Im already an EV convert, my 2012 my Tesla still knocks spots off almost everything else.........thats nuts. If Tesla wanted an outcome to their mission they got it. Were going sustainable........and its fun!
Amazing video; 👏 seeing such videos makes me appreciate how good the Lucid Air tech is in comparison ....The Lucid Air range achieves a lot more range with dual motors and over 900 hp @ 4.3 miles per kw !! And offers more space than both and is definitely luxurious...

I'd sacrifice the Tesla efficiency for the Merc cabin and comfort. Can't wait for Lucid to get the the UK and see its efficiency on our roads.
The EQS massage seats are exceptionally good. Different intensity options and many types of massages alongside. Really good.
In Winter the range will drop drastically on the EQS, but only slightly on the new Teslas due to their efficient heat pump system.
It would be great to see a similar test run in cold conditions.
I also wonder if you can spec the Merc with smaller wheels to eek out those extra few miles - interesting stuff.

Where are your facts, didn't happen in low temperature EQS tests in Norway.
@@MyMednas The EQS is designed for all conditions, including very extreme weather where heat pumps stop providing heat.
Just a quick comment on drag. The actual amount of drag experienced is the product of the coefficient of drag for a particular speed and the projected frontal area. Yes, the lower the Cd the better but it doesn’t tell the whole story. From the pictures, it looks like the EQS has a larger frontal area than the Model S so the actual amount of drag encountered may be higher than on the Tesla.
I think the EQS is better on higher Speed. On a german Autobahn at 160 km/h the EQS perhaps will beat the Model S. And less noise.

Why does the ambient light bars change colour? And are they necessary.
If the Merc stops itself, assuming it has adaptive cruise that does that’s, does it still stop with the sharp stop?
You know, the look of the EQS is starting to grow on me! The Model S is really starting to look dated at this point.
I think if I were to buy one (which I wouldn't!), I'd probably go with the Mercedes. By the time you're spending that amount, you either go big or go home.
The Tesla may be the quicker car, but how often are you really going to use that power. You're going to spend most of your time at a constant speed on the motorway, or doing stuck in traffic around town. I'd rather go for the more comfortable, better quality interior as that will have a bigger impact on the ownership experience than the *channels JC* SPEED and POWEEER
You’re right there. You don’t buy a luxury model to race the ‘hot hatchbacks’.
You need sufficient acceleration and speed to overtake comfortably so as to resume your journey at your intended speed.
I find the EQS 450+ to be more than adequate in this way. There are other EQS models if you want more acceleration but I find the 450+ to be very, very good.
The Model S was a sexy looking EV (or any car for that matter) but it is starting to look old AF.
I'll wait for the A6 E-tron. Never been a Merc fan..

Great informative video as always Richard. It’s interesting how far ahead of the mainstream car manufacturers Tesla are on EV efficiency.
I am now considering the EQS 450+ as my first EV it ticks all the EV boxes since it will be launching in SA in next coming weeks.

You could hear the Mercedes was quieter and see it had better build quality. Another great video was shocked how little electric it took to do those miles. They just need to put in a lot more EV changer around the uk.
Excellent test! Someone recently said the wouldn’t buy a Tesla because they are, predominately, a “software” company which doesn’t “understand” cars! Clearly, it’s the legacy manufacturers that don’t understand electric cars! My Fiat, though I love it (!) doesn’t come close to the model 3s efficiency…
For the EQS the 22 inch setup is estimated to be 10% less efficient vs 19 inch. Big difference.

Quick question…. So which would you have as an everyday car? Efficiency. We have a 19 plate model S 100D (300) miles we get 345 efficiency on your car your getting 245. Is this normal comparing the 2 models

It’s fascinating… but the best rear seat to sit on, is the Model Y.
Even my (six foot five inch) stepson can stretch out fully. The room under the front seats is quite extraordinary
The jolt at the end is because the motor rotors have to find their neutral position in the magnetic flux. Hyundai has the same problem. It's technical design issue and hard or maybe impossible to solve by software.
The late 2020 Model S called Long Range Plus has the same range as the new 2022 Model S. Around 400 miles. The 2019 as the one you have has around 370 miles EPA range.
Yes the plus has a tad more kWh available. Pretty rare to find one here
Remember when it comes to charging speeds. The raven tesla can charge over 200kw, but its limited by the ccs adapter at v3 chargers. The new model s/x will have native ccs and charging speeds will be as it is in the us.
Tesla Range Mode - I thought it drove in single motor except when dual motor required by road condition or Heavy Foot?
Great video - thanks Richard. I drove a 2016 Tesla MS P90DL for 6 years and 111k miles until I sold it earlier this month. I have exactly that EQS spec in that colour coming tomorrow! Can't wait to see how it compares!
Had the EQS450+ nearly two weeks now nad have done 1500 miles. Very, very impressed. It really is like a spaceship, and so much better than my 6 year old Tesla - not surprising given how much the tech has moved on. But with my right foot I get about 350 miles range from it... still about 100 miles more than my Tesla P90DL.
All I know is I'm jealous these are cars I'll never afford. That EQS is right up my street. Wow what a car and I'll say the same for the Tesla's too. I'd have one in a heartbeat. Fantastic tech on show here. However I'd choose the comfort of the EQS if I could 🙂👍🏻
Interesting you mentioned the braking a friend of mine who had a ICE top range Merc hated the braking he actually got rid of it because it annoyed him so much.
The brakes on the EQC are a shocker. Completely inconsistent feel every time you touch the brakes with full regen on. Can be dangerous sometimes when you need the brakes.
I would be very interested in the range test if it was done on a cold night in the rain instead of the optimum for EVs, a nice warm day. I watched one done on a Tesla and the comparison was when the test was done at night in the rain on a cold day the range dropped by a third compared to the nice warm day test.
Which would you prefer Richard out of the Mercedes eqs and the jaaaaag ipace i like the jaguar lived the inside when a friend showed me round it but not been in the eqs so wouldn't know whot be like in comparison 🤔
The EQS turns up the luxury to another level. It’s a lot more expensive of course. More “wafty” to drive
Some info about the actual weight of each car would also have been nice. You compare a full equipped luxury car with laminated glass, large screen 20% more battery to carry around, massage chairs and the list goes on to the Tesla minimalistic none existing interior. I can only guess that the EQS must be the heaviest one.
Remember, this is the Raven model, the new 2022 model has a n improved interior (and laminated glass) and even more efficiency than this Raven. EQS is also not fully equiped as it only has one engine.
But of you want to know these figures, here they are:
the 2022 model S (105K EURO) weights 2070KG with dual motors and goes to 100 in 3.2 seconds.
The EQS (same price), weights 2480KG while having ons engine and goes to to 100 in 6.2 seconds.
The EQS dual motor (580, 140K EURO) weights 2585KG and is able to jump to 100 in 4.3 seconds.
The total frontal area (A) comparison is an important factor…..not just CD. Lower cars have a significant advantage.
Tyre width is the other factor, not so much the diameter of the rims. 265mm. v …..?

EQS with 21" tyres just beat Tesla in Bjørn's 1000 km test, finishing 9h5m with 220 wh/km consumption vs M3P at 9h15m with 212 consumption. 🤷
Charged at an average 184 kW at Ionity over a 15 min period. 👍

The weight of the Mercedes’ actually has a big impact on its range. From the all wheel steering to all the better materials…. It does add weight
The weight of an EV was tested by Bjørn Nyland by running a car empty, then filling with an additional 400kg (max gross weight) and there was statistically no difference (in fact is was very slightly more efficient when loaded). We have all grown up in ICE cars where weight is important as you did not recover the additional energy on braking required to accelerate more mass up to speed, but with an EV you get most of (about 90%) of that energy back on braking. Yes, there is an increase due to rolling resistance, but this is small, but the round trip of energy on acceleration and regen is probably has more losses.
So, no, the mass of the car probably does not have much difference, and it is probably a difference on the way Cd is calculated based on frontal error along with a much better power train design in Tesla cars. Obviously the new Tesla cars have reluctance motors that are significantly more efficient, but I don't believe this Raven has these motors.
So it probably comes down to a better power train overall in the Tesla due to their experience in the EV field.

I think the Tesla Long Range was under £80k new… so a fair bit cheaper. Not as luxury yes, but a big difference.
But the cost of the new models has not been announced here in the uk

18 months ago (or thereabouts) they did quote around £85k I think for the new model S and £120k for plaid, if I remember correctly, with delivery late 2021. X was 95k. With increases in price of Y and 3 this year the base S is surely going to be 95-100k
Great video, very good explaination. The different between Tesla and Mercedes is. the quality for the car. Mercedes has the much better quality. Tesla can not bit the high quality of Mercedes. Tesla not actally a car company, Tesla is a high tech company. Mercedes has experience to building cars over 100 years. Tesla can not bit this experience thats you can see on the quality.

I was checking out these two cars, and I ended up with the EQS 450+. Mercedes gave a better deal for a lease. Maybe down the road, after Tesla does some updates in the S, I will consider the S because of the speed, range, and sound system. So far, I am getting a good range on the Mercedes, and it is more comfortable. I prefer the sound system of Tesla. Mercedes is weak the bass.

What about customer service?
The EQS is on another planet in terms of comfort. I have driven both Tesla and the EQS. The mercedes is like floating on a cloud compared to the Tesla’s hard suspension. The tesla is a very basic car compared to the EQS thats have tons of features to give the passengers the best experience, the tesla is minimalistic so they can maximise profits which is good for them but not so much for the customer. Even the driving assistant/auto pilot in they Mercedes’ is a lot smoother. Most people tend to think that only teslas can self drive. For the price Tesla charge, they need make a better quality product.
Is it true that you can get the Plaid everywhere in Europe now except of the UK?
Rumours ordering is opening but it will still be a little while before they come…. I’d be surprised if by end of year

Model S competitor is a EQE, not the EQS.
If I had that type of budget for a car I probably wouldn't care for a few kilowatts of electricity and go for the Merc.
One of the most underrated pieces of design is how little reflection you get on the display screen in the Model 3 and it sounds like it is the same in the Model S
Ending the video saying that ‘little things matter’ in a luxury saloon review without also mentioning again in the wrap-up about interior noise levels, comfort, seating position, quality of the interior finish and overall range seems slanted as a finishing comment.
I drive an EQS 450+ and I think it’s an outstanding car.
Motorway speeds c. 120kms still deliver 368 miles in summertime.
It just does everything extremely well.

why compare a brand new mercedes with a previous generation tesla model s for range and efficiency?
The newest model S has am even smaller battery and weighs 10% less. So even more efficient than the Raven Model S. No point in comparing it. Over 600kg difference on EQS and Model S 2022
Mercedes was luxury in gas motor vehicles and Tesla comes out with Fancy electric cars. now mercedes wants to cone out as the big dog in regards to that being fancy. they can pull it off, hence their vehicle hx, but tesla should be proud about having such a luxury brand looking over their shoulder to up scale their designs. Tesla all day every day!
It my humble option, a Tesla is one to have as the model S has shown there are built for longevity & their software gets regulate updates over the air 👍

I would be really curious to see comparing apples to apples. This means same tires and same wheels size. Since you are very knowledgeable in EV's, what would your estimation be? What improvement would the EQS have with 19 inch wheels and same tires?
Tesla would probably still win the range test, but I think the difference would be much smaller. What is your opinion?
He knows what he is doing aka having competitors on bigger wheels.
Would that make the test realistic? I doubt normal people changes wheels more than twice a year
@@casperhansen826You did not understand my post. Bigger wheels / tires consume more energy. So if someone does a range comparison, they should compare same wheels / tires to have both cars on same level in this respect.
Great video, but wish EV manufacturers would agree on a standard way of measuring consumption - I understand miles per kWh, whatt hours per mile means absolutely nothing to me :(
Now, that depends. Are you used to miles per gallon or liters per 100 km?
I find it easier to calculate cost per mile when using Wh/mile.
@@espencapable As all my life cars' consuption was compared in l/100 km, I am used to have it different. But for electric I agree that it might make more sense mil-km per kW as there is a much more variable consumption (speed, temperature, climbing or not etc.) than we have for ICE cars and it makes it easy to know your range.

I don't think people buying a Mercedes EQS would ever consider a Model S and they rarely consider efficiency.
I think there are much more competition between BMW and Tesla
I think a prospective purchaser test driving both an EQS and a Model S would see the EQS chosen.
Relative reliability will only become apparent over a five year period but Mercedes has the edge in comfort and interior finish.
My mom bought an EQB. Been in for service 5 times in 4 months. :P A lot of software and electrical faults. I think Mercedes has some work to do still.
The range is great on both but price difference , lack of supercharger network, efficiency put the Tesla still miles a head

Crazy. The Tesla is 3 years old, much cheaper and quicker, yet much more efficient than the all new self-proclaimed pinnacle of Mercedes engineering. The German just can't keep up with the Tesla in any way. Well, its panel gaps and leather stitchings are probably better. Heard there are people who care about that stuff in Germany. Overall, huge win for Tesla.

You DO realize the EQXX did 747 miles with one charge? In the real world, traffic and everything? Tesla has nothing to counter that thing…
So, because it is more efficient makes it some greater overall car? There's something very warped about that. A car is more than technology, it's a transportation tool and there is a lot to consider in terms of what makes a care desirable for different people.
@@erebostd Testbed vehicle with little back seat room. Mercedes may match or exceed Tesla in range and efficiency. But, tbh, that's not the most important thing I look for in a vehicle.
If you have more traffic in that smaller roundabout you are in a bad spot with the Tesla, you block traffic. I wonder how they managed to have a 100k car not being able to take those curves, feels like being designed for American roads / highways. Living with it in old towns with tiny streets and sharp curves might not be a great experince.
Sorry to be a downer RS but you and others need to start talking about how much it’s going to cost us to charge a car when in the UK most will be paying £0.50-60p/kw of electricity. Public chargers may be closer to a £1/kWh. Come Q1 of 2023
Meanwhile you can still sign up to Octopus Go for a year at 7.5p /kWh and currently charge at Tesco for free. Most EV drivers wont be paying 60p /kWh this winter.
@@MyMednas yep I’m at Tesco free charging now, but will that be the same in March if I use more electric then I spent on the meal deal. I also had a free overnight charge at a hotel on Tuesday, will that still be free if it costs the hotel £20? I’m trying to point out people may be making decisions on buying and leasing deals now for vehicles that they can’t afford to run when they are delivered next year. The government may need some new incentives if they want the mass adoption to continue and accelerate, as it must if we’re to make an environmental difference.
Margins for Tesla are the highest in the industry.
Mercedes have made such a complex, hard to mass manufacture car they probably lose money on every one they sell.
