EQ began with the boring and soulless legacy effort that was the EQC suv: a car I hate the most in the world.
But it’s almost as if Mercedes knew it wasn’t enough, playing a desperate game of catch up in the EV world, as soon after came the stunning EQS Concept concept, and the Vision AVTR. The EQS especially, a Bespoke car built to be electric from the get go.
And now the production version is here, the S Class of electric cars. Built at the new Factory 56, alongside S Class, it’s #MercedesBenz’s best foot into the EV world, so will give us an idea how well the can succeed vs their combustion cars and external rivals: and indeed what AMG will do with it all! So a very important video today.
It features a new generation of batteries, with higher density, and the EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast charging stations giving you 300KM in 15 mins!
Electric Drive Line is the focus here: with a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) in the EQS 450 RWD variant. The EQS 450+ gives: 333BHP, 568NM and a 0-60 of 6.2 secs! Top speed is 210KM.
Other territories get the #EQS 580 4Matic, and AWD #ev car with 523 BHP and two electric motors: 135 kW (front) and 255 kW (rear).
The chassis of the new EQS, with a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear, is closely related in design to the new S-Class. Indeed the size vs S Class is nigh identical with the same length, height, just being marginally slimmer.
Things like DIGITAL LIGHT headlamp technology (light markings on the road), and standard rear-axle steering up to 4.5 degrees (or order OTA update of 10 degrees) also come from S.
Design is weird though: it’s Cab-forward - What does that mean? Kind of like a Prius, with the a pillar closer to the front axle, short bonnet and boot. The plan was clearly distinguishing these from vehicles with combustion engines even at first glance : and it’s worked, but is that a good thing? It is the world’s most aerodynamic car at 0.2CD.
But today is about driving, and the best bit is the SOUNDSCAPES. We get two sound profiles (or off) to start with: Silver Waves and Vivid Flux, and I’ll show you what both sound like in the EQS. We will also check out the whole interior including the famed Hyperscreen with MBUX.
As an option, the EQS has automatic comfort doors at the front and rear. The door handles extend and the driver's door opens automatically: and much more that I can’t wait to show you!
As for the future: we already showed you the EQS 53 AMG. A performance version with 761 BHP, check the video to see the first details of that car. There’s also a smaller version of the EQS to be found in the EQE we recently reviewed!
But will it drive like an S? What does it all mean for the future? Today we explore:
    - Kamehameha
    - The technology under the skin
    - Batteries
    - Electric motors
    - EQS 450+
    - Similarities to S Class - chassis, suspension, tech
    - EQS Comfort doors demonstration
    - Exterior Design
    - What could the EQS have looked like?
    - Interior review
    - The Sound of EQS : Soundscapes
    - Hyperscreen
    - Full driving review
    - Conclusion

As a Mercedes owner I’d say these electric cars are not what I was expecting. I would much prefer the look of the regular cars with electric motors. To me the Audi and Porsche look much more attractive from the exterior. As always Mercedes interior gorgeous.

Totally agree with that, they look way too futuristic and weird (some of the models) and I’m not a big fan of that even though I love Merc. I like what BMW have done to the iX3 that almost looks identical to the normal X3, and what they’re doing with the new i4 that pretty much looks like the new regular one.
      Looking just like they should.

@@tremainebrown2694 they should’ve released the new s580 design with the electric motor would’ve been great in my opinion. I love the 2018 to 2021 s560. I owned a s450. To be honest I got a new 2021 e63s and disappointed as well. No iwc clock the sound is not the same of the old amgs as well. The quality of interior isn’t as nice as it was on the 2018 e63s. Now a days you need a designo package interior to make your Mercedes feel special. Only good thing is with supply low in the USA amgs are not losing value.

Im getting the same vibe from this car as I got from the first gen Panamera. You just want to get inside as fast as possible to avoid looking at it.
The EQE looks slightly more promising, but I think the 1 bow design language is better utilized in the SUV Coupe segment

The 1st gen Panamera is a hunchback - this is not a hunchback Sir ;)
You know the story how the hunchback came about? They had the Panamera ready, showed it to the CEO at that time who was very tall - the design was sleek. He sat in the back - was too small for him, so the designers had to dangle the roof higher and it went into the production like that. :)

As a long-term Mercedes owner, I rather like the new design. It’s both aesthetically daring and ingeniously functional. It’s hard to argue with such a low drag coefficient and exceptional range. Range anxiety and shoddy quality (hear that, Tesla - even though they’re manufactured just up the freeway from me) have kept me away from EV‘s, so I’m excited to purchase an EQS - which more than addresses my prior EV concerns.

    • @Coconut3A
      @Coconut3A 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also like the design, it's not sexy and aggressive like a Taycan but it's still a beautiful car.
Also, people need to understand, that the ev were pushed because of the global warming and maximize aerodynamic over design should actually be a priority. In a long run, you just save a ton of electricity ( big part of which is still produced with fossil fuels) and help to slow down the global warming.

  • @benkrapf

Thanks for a really cool video. Love your animation work. I own a 2018 S450 and, as others have said, would have preferred the exterior design carry over in the EV line. In particular, that wiper fluid door looks plain tacky as if it were an afterthought. The interior is plain awesome although I do worry about the absence of the control wheel and touchpad. Overall, I applaud Mercedes as they've built a true luxury EV as opposed to the uninspired pod that is the Tesla Model S.

To the many who seem to dislike the appearance in the radical new EQS from Daimler Benz,
I can only say that I fully subscribe to the design ethos of "Form Follows Function". This allows the car to achieve the incredible drag co-efficient of just "0.2-0" and glide through the air so seemlessly. When one considers that this luxury vehicle has a comfort level and range of more than Double that of the other premium German brands Audi and Porsche, it becomes no contest to me. I know that is is subjective of course but give me Practicality over needless bulges and creases in the bodywork any day.

@raz the point of EVs is that they do NOT need a long bonnet as there is no V8 underneath. Most manufacturers are to scared to disrupt the traditional proportions but they are all wasting car body real estate on nothing but nostalgia. So it's thumbs up to Mercedes for at least design something that makes sense. That said, the way they executed it was not the most pleasing to the eye, so I'd say it takes a few generations of designs to get it right (just like gas cars took many decades to get to where they are). The nice thing about having a short bonnet is that you can allow the same amount of space in a 4.8m EV as a 5.2m gas car. Now imagine a 5.2m EV! YOu could almost play badminton in it. They just need to get their aesthetics together.

Moreover, in direct comparison the hood of the W223 S-class appeared a little outdated to me. Electric is the future boys, and the EQS is the ultimate expression of the craft of Mercedes engineering to align with it - and to align with Tesla.

This may be the most important video of the year so far! 🤐 It’s Mercedes’ best foot forward on Electric, the S Class of their line up, which means it has a lot to live up to. 👉 it will tell us what the future electric cars will drive like, how emotional the AMG will be, and whether they are still able to eclipse their rivals... 🤔

Thank you for the nice review. The car is amazing for the interior and the technology. Just the exterior needs to be improved in the future. Hope Mercedes will do that. But the rest of the car is great!

  • @RichCSR2

Agreed, interior not quite as polished as the normal S but still has many cool things. The best line was if only you could have done the same with the exterior, that would have been an idea 🤣. Agreed though the front is diabolical... Maybe buy it then send it straight to Mansory see what they can do 😂😂

I'm losing my interest for cars. If I have to ride around in an electric car I might as well just get a Camry or something, they all seem pretty much the same.

They should have fitted the hyper screen to the "standard" s class. So much better looking than the tablet stuck in the centre imo

The audi aicon concept looks amazing with this ev-egg-shaped-aerodynamic design. I think they could’ve done a better job. Even the concept of the eqs looked amazing.

I like your honesty about the exterior design. I agree, If Taycan could look this good, Mercedes should have done better.

My theory is that Mercedes purposely made the E lineup of cars particularly quirky looking to not alienate traditional fans because we can still buy the new prettier hybrids like the the coming sl and gt 63e. Given Gordon Wagner and the team can still come back and overhaul the design language in the future when ev’s are more mainstream I can definitely see this becoming a better looking model over time, especially since driving feel and interior are already great

If the people reject the OneBowDesign you will easily see it in the Maybach EQS with traditional bonnet outsell the standard EQS !

They went way too soft on the design. It just looks like an Apple mouse. I can’t even tell the difference between the S and E class. They look the exact same.
I honestly don’t think they’ll meet their goal by 2030. The car would need to be cheaper than gas model AND look very similar to them as well. People fall in love with the look not just how eco-friendly this will be.

whatever everyone says, I like this shape and the one-bow design. the 3-box sedan design is old fashioned and suited to ice cars only, no point of bringing this to ev's. move with the time man ...

    Good review.
This car is so delayed and every other day you an email about how some feature I chose is going to change the timeline more. I don't think MB is doing a good job of managing this program. And unlike others in this space who invited early wannabe-adopters to drive events, MB doesn't even want those who are ready to drop some $ to be anywhere close to the car! It''s only all you famous social media personalities. This is getting to be a frustrating experience and not just me but many people who bought into this vision from MB are reconsidering. Otherwise, as a car, still hope to get in one.

Yesss now that redesign would have been perfect and even if they would have just stuck with the concept EQS which looked amazing that would have worked too bmw did the same thing with the I4 the concept looked amazing and the production car a flop

Hmm…the looks are a challenge…not a car to dream about but if we must have an EV, then I suppose it looks far nicer than any Tesla. I hope those doors can sense walls!! An important car…now back to an S63 Coupe and live before 2030!!!
Update after getting to the end of the video….I think it is alright..looks are still needing work but they are as they are for a reason….so I can adjust to it. The interior is wonderful…the passenger screen is best switched off to avoid confusion and confrontations between driver and passenger but over all, this is a technical masterpiece. Now I am old enough to have been astounded by the brand new Jaguar E-Type, my Dad bought a new Mini on launch day and it was that or a Ford Anglia 105E…both were amazing but in comparison to what we have now, simply a tin box with seats. I just wish I could bring back the engineers, electronics experts and old friends I knew who would be utterly dumbfounded by this car…thrilled and climbing all over it but completely unable to understand how it all works…and they were alive twenty five years ago. So yes..this is a major leap forwards…sad to think of Petrol starting to leave us as it has been part of my entire life…it will be here somehow for decades….so no, cancel the S63 and order one of these…for now…..but keep a 63 AMG somewhere in the garage even if only to look at. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
