Pssst.. the sinkhole will continue to open up no matter how much you fill it in, a sinkhole formed by an underwater stream slowly eroded away the sediment and everything above fell into the void. I'm sure you've all seen what happens when you dig a hole in the sand on the beach and you hit the water line. That's exactly what's happening when the water line underneath the loose soil erodes away the supporting sediment. Once it fills in it'll take probably the same amount of time until it erodes it away again
The cavity that is allowing the surface materials to funnel though is larger that anticipated. There are instruments that can determine the magnitude of the subsurface void. I don't understand why this hasn't been done to this point. The Karst conditions vary from location to location and the size of the subsurface void would help to determine the remedial action needed to stabilize this funnel type sinkhole. After 40 years of investigating sinkholes I learned to determine what I was dealing with before trying to come up with a remedial action plan.

It will grow larger as the walls of the whole continue to collapse into the hole and be dragged away by the water source. It may take years but the whole will get larger especially after hurricanes with massive amounts of precipitation entering the underground aquifer of freshwater
They think the sinkhole is only limited to that diameter it continues to erode away the substrate and as it collapses inside the whole the base gets larger will the upper soil around the edge of the hole is held together by the grassroots, it will undercut the edges in the hole will be larger when it collapses again, they should make that perimeter much larger

Filling it with gravel they need to fill it with some large rocks and boulders the smaller gravel will be washed away as well as the screenings from the stone. There's an underwater water source that's carrying away the sediment. But even if they put larger boulders in there the water current flowing around the boulders will make more settlement disappear and carry it along with the underwater stream. And the big boulders will just sink lower it lower in the hole. It's nature's Way of removing sediment through the process of erosion and attrition

The earth is recycling itself: we live in northwest Florida and we have some sinkholes in the area, but to my knowledge they're much smaller. I remember from either my freshman chemistry or physics class learning about the movement of atoms (protons, electrons and neutrons]: paraphrasing "in order for something to move there has to be open space aka "a hole", I think they called it "Hole Theory". Florida has had a lot of rain, so the water has to runoff somewhere? Wherever the water drains it impacts something else.

Florida is built upon a Swiss cheese of limestone. It is amazing to see entire lakes disappear overnight at times. People are like nanobacteria crawling over the surface of the earth. Some geological events cannot be accurately predicted or remedied.
They are just wasting resources filling this hole again and again. Fact its not getting bigger, and just re-opening means their is a strong current below, that keeps washing away what is put in it. Filling it may delay a collapse, but if nothing is done, you will eventually see water.

I have called out the governing agencies several times for violating their own laws by introducing chemicals into water sources connected directly to the aquifer. Clean limestone gravel backfill is fine but the majority of the time it’s not what they use. I have been diving in several cave systems under neighborhoods and you can see where sinkhole repair companies have pumped grout/cement into bore holes directly into the aquifer passages. These create blockages which increase water pressure causing more sinkholes to form. Certain unnamed government agencies say this practice is under investigation.
