Squiffy Living on top of a hole would require suspension or holy intervention. Anyway, the damage has been done, sides would be safe, resorts have been made from them.
Could be worse. Like the San Francisco luxury high-rise that now is both sinking and tilting 2 feet from where it had been when residents began moving in.
J Cee2 well yeah, true. But considering Florida it’s still super paranoid to be knowing these sink holes are all over, developed with zero warning, and most people mistake the signs of them because the signs are often the same as normal weathering here in Florida.
I don't but living as I do atop an abandoned coal mine about 30 miles from a steaming volcanic caldera makes me wonder if my reader has less to worry about.
That's not a sinkhole, that's a tourist attraction. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a McDonalds down there. Want to impress us? Then go down a sinkhole that just swallowed a street and some houses.
Cave explorers like myself have the assistance of NASA. After we find unknown life and minerals. Feel free to wait until NASA finds a use for yourself.
I've been in there several times diving, great place to get a feel for cave diving for the average person since it's considered open water diving. At least it was when I was there.
we drilled into salt water river about 2000 ft. down flowing from the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico. We logged the well . the river was about 25 FT deep but the width was off the chart.
Not me. I find sinkholes interesting and often dig open an entry to what it hides. I was invited to party in 2021 with cave explorers who had made more than 150 miles of cartography in just one cave.
Isn't it just awesome how something notorious for caving in is an immersive tourist attraction... Also, how about testing the solidity of the he ground underneath before building on it... These don't form overnight.
So would it be safe to say before you build a house any where in Florida you should maybe has some kind of ground Doppler study done to check the integrity of the ground, if the even exists.
Before 2010, the presence of sinkholes was a relatively uncommon phenomenon. In the last 5 years there have been an unprecedented number of new sinkholes appearing around the planet on a size and scale never before seen. As of 2016, there are new ones opening up every day. Not an isolated phenomenon, sinkholes are integrally linked to the emergence of other dramatic earth changes including increased earthquake activity, volcano eruptions, strange sounds and extreme weather events. The emergence of so many sinkholes in such a short time is just one of many apparent portents of likely drastic changes to come. As they say - being forewarned is forearmed, and those who do not pay attention to the present become dreams of the past!
I have actually gone diving in there. They didn't show very much in this. There are gated off cave entrances closer to the bottom, & one are that they could not gate off had a warning not to enter & a number indicating how many people went in & didn't come back out. I love diving, but I stay away from things like that!
'...How common these are'... this sounds like the South Park episodes when they say 'cows turn themselves inside out all the time'. It's amazing that it is so common but almost no one knew about it till it started happening. Why haven't they stopped people from building houses on top of these things? Why are officials so surprised when it happens?
I agree Christel.. the effect of surrounding geography on tastes & contents of natural water makes a huge difference. I am sorry to hear what you had to go through in WV. Luckily my experience with well water had been otherwise. Now keep your secret spots safe.... coz public enjoying Free Treasure is undigestable for Greedy Authorities & companies.
no. after the earths crust we have a mantle made of molten metals where the typical effects of erosion (wind/water) do not occur. So i think the deepest one could ever go is to the bottom of the crust
3:06 ... Is that a house like 2 feet from the edge of the hole? With people knowing that there is a giant cavern below them standing there just observing like no big deal?
...cave divers are constantly exploring, surveying, and mapping the underwater cave systems in Florida, from the panhandle down to the center of the state....think of all the place names in the state with the word 'spring'...those are all resurgences of the Floridan aquifer...
I lived on well water over 25 yrs & it wasnt pleasant! it has alot of iron in it here in WV,smells like rotten eggs from sulfur & turns ur clothes, bathtub, & sink red, looks awful, and even made my hair brassy. we had to put bags of water softner tablets/salt with a system to mix it...Im not sure how other well water is in U.S. but we dont miss it! Now the few secret spots we find that have mountain/spring water omg, its amazing! we take jugs and fill them up & yes its better than fancy bottles!
I•live•in•central•Florida| I remember that sinkhole that happened in seffner awhile back... I live not far from it... my friends new people that were related to the ones that died too... ; - ;
The reasons I will never live in Florida: Giant spiders, and the fact that it's basically just a giant sandbar. Still, I would like to go to Disney World before it sinks into the ground.
that great layer of limestone was precipitated out of the waters of the fountains of the deep that burst out like geysers during The Flood 4,350 years ago. natural acids from soil and vegetation have been slowly dissolving the lime ever since.
question is why does this one have a roof? how has this even formed naturally without support from underneath. the gap between the roof and the floor is almost double the reporters size. it doesnt make logical sense that this enclosure has formed naturally.
when the limestone bedrock becomes unstable, due to fracturing over time, and the change in levels of the aquifer, the rock, by the pull of gravity, breaks away to the place where it regains its support....sometimes that is when it forms the dome, other times the rock falls away entirely to for a circular sink like a cenote...
No. In simple terms, the amount of heat and pressure that is generated as you increase depth heavily outweighs any erosional feature caused by water. Water itself will not be present as you reach the Mantle of the Earth. The boundary called the Moho. This may look like a big hole, but in terms of the Earth it is irrelevant. Take a volcano for example, it's magma chamber is gigantic!
Man is to thank for the condition of the world. Always drilling , digging, and destroying our atmosphere breaking the ozone layer shield by sending rockets into orbit man destroys anything natural
In a place like Florida with the aquifer that it has, I can't imagine that human demand is affecting the water table - is it not like a giant sponge that fills as fast as it's drained?
Caver461 Not always. Some of them, (like the Ogallala aquifer under most of the midwest) refill very slowly. In the Ogallala case it's because parts of it are under dry regions and other parts are under fairly dense rock; I don't know what the case is in Florida.

Seeing a sinkhole makes my skin crawl
"And someone living on top of this would be in danger?"
Uh.. no. They'd be absolutely safe.
What a stupid question.
Haha I laughed out loud when he asked that. I was like "Are you fucking kidding?".
it depends how deep beneath the surface the sinkhole is. Most are too deep to be of concern.
you're so smart
Juanito Gonzalez you're*

And here I am. Sitting on my bed, in Florida, paranoid there's a giant hole under my house, ready to collapse in at any moment.

Holy shit lol. Well aren't you sensitive?
mrbostonian93 I think you cant claim for insuarance wegens natural disastor .
It's not so bad, the gators and hurricanes more than make up for the sinkholes.
They're also called cenotes, they're all over florida and the yucatan. I dove in some this summer...
So, this connects to the ocean in some way? I saw some little fish swimming. I'm pretty sure rain water doesn't magically create little fish
dang! the water looks cleaning than our drinking water bottles!

what sink hole is this ?
Yeah, it looks so dangerous. I would be terrified to dive in there. Be careful!
I also think these things are accelerated by mining if not caused entirely by them in some cases
If I knew there was a sinkhole under my house, I'd turn it into an extension of my house. lol.

I wonder if Farmer's Insurance would cover this seeing as how they've seen a thing or two.
I’m imagining that they’re inside the sinkhole and the sinkhole suddenly collapsed. lol
It's beautiful.
Sinkholes freak me out due to their unpredictability 😮😢

devils den fl. its a underground spring you can swim in its alot of fun
Fine video. I was looking for more information. That place is very interesting.
In particular, has there been any study/mapping of Aquifer in Florida?
...cave divers are constantly exploring, surveying, and mapping the underwater cave systems in Florida, from the panhandle down to the center of the state....think of all the place names in the state with the word 'spring'...those are all resurgences of the Floridan aquifer...
Winterpark (Rose) sinkhole probably looked just like this before its collapse in 1981!!😮
the whole looks like a beautiful place to live tbh

This is devils den and it is in Williston Florida I recently visited I live about an hour away it is an amazing experience
This is really cool to see. I would love to dive there.
Wonder if they have found any crocodile inside those sinkholes
In Yucatan they are called "cenotes ".
I live in central Florida!! And you dig two feet down and you hit water
I can imagine how pure the water tastes
Thats why people relied on Wells for so long.. I promise ya The water from well tastes far far better than what we drink from fancy bottles.
we still fully underscored what bellow the underground.
That is why they can have Florida! And folk wanna talk bout california sinking when Florida's riddled with sinkholes!
wtf all these caverns in florida its like minecraft xD

Had one of these, about this big if not bigger, right outside my back yard of my old house.... Turned it into a ditch eventually.. pretty interesting
So, basically, Florida is settling itself and filling in the holes in it's foundation. Not a good look for prospective real estate investment.
Will make a good septic tank
If my was was to sink, and it turned out like that, I would just move in to the cave
Your very dirty water my faceu u can build a way out and if its dirt u can climb it
@shock toast ;bhg n.y
I played in this one growing up in Williston...cool. Wish they had the stairs then.
this is proof that the country would be sucked down the ocean by the seas
should the oceans become more acidic it would be the destruction and sinking of atlantis.
Need more reporting like this cnn. Less politics.

Just like icebergs. So much more under water.
Those guys should leave before a creeper blows them up
sinkoles are made by underwater currents dissolving it for years
they are not instant...

Of course Cooper Wants to know about dark holes and how deep they are
it will be cool to go inside it but what happens if there people inside it and it collapses?

scary shit i live in Florida and they have been opening a lot
With all these sinkholes in southern states, it’s hard to see how any of them could be flooded by the ocean.
