Seriously? It's sand. Sand collapses if you dig a big enough hole. Sand is holy s@#t heavy. Is this only common sense for Floridians, California's, basically states that have a beach?
I do admit my brother and I did dig holes when we were kids, but it was only the length of our arm and wide enough for our butt to fit in it. We did bury each other also, but our butt went in the hole and touched the bottom, and we used sand from the beach to bury each other. It was only enough to not see our legs, arms, stomach, and chest.

I was buried alive at age 5. I am writing about this experience hoping the parents, or someone who knows them, will pass this on to them. I was buried (by a bulldozer) in a freshly dug sewer trench (think a dirt grave about 4 1/2 feet deep). My 6 year old brother and I had been jumping in and out of the trenches and the bulldozer operator saw him but not me. He was tall enough to get out on his own but I had to take two steps forward and grab his hand but I was frozen in panic. I am telling this because the parents probably worry about what their beloved daughter went through in those final moments and I know, because I lived it. As the load of dirt covered me it was dark and I was terrified and suffocating. But that part didn't seem to last long. Suddenly I was out of that trench and curled up safely in fetal position in a reddish black dimly lit area (I always think of return to the womb because I don't know how else to describe it). But 3 things stand out as if it happened yesterday. I was fully conscious but I didn't need to breathe. To this day (I'm about to turn 68) I sometimes resent having to breathe. It seems so unnecessary and such an effort! And I felt like I was surrounded as far as consciousness could reach by what I can only describe as the deepest, most unconditional love. And thirdly, I felt SAFER than I have ever felt in this life, either before or after that incident. I grew up on the Canadian Prairies so it's not like I've led a dangerous life, but that feeling of safety, that literally nothing could ever harm me, remains tangible. And this is what I want to share with Sloan's parent. She may have had that short moment of panic/suffocation like me, but very quickly her Soul would have left her body. As I type this all those years later, I get very emotional remembering that bliss of being free. While I was destined to stay on Earth (despite being buried 20 minutes or more) Sloan was destined to journey with the Angels. I actually suspect that she didn't even go through that ever-so-brief moment of fear. She was just whisked away to where she's safe and loved and some day all her loved ones on Earth will join her. I never worry about loved ones who cross over, my concern is with those of us left behind. My beloved husband/best friend crossed over some years ago so I have an understanding of the depth of loss and heartbreak her parents are experiencing, but I thought (hoped) sharing my experience might help them understand that from Sloan's perspective, it wasn't bad like they might imagine. I carry no trauma residue of the event with me. I remember it as the only time in my life I've experienced absolute bliss.
My deepest condolences to Sloan's family. 🙏🏻

@@samanthasorg7980There's a middle ground between extreme negligence and it being 100% not the parents' fault. It *is* negligent--to some degree--to allow a little kid to dig in a sand hole so deep that it's twice her height. Sand collapses suddenly; that's just what sand does. Only if the parents had never been to the beach or played in a sandbox in their entire lives could they maybe be held completely blameless here.
They made a mistake and they deserve sympathy but this was a REALLY bad mistake to make. It was not some sort of "freak accident" like some people are claiming. This is what sand *always* ends up doing if you keep on digging and digging.

I do excavation for work with heavy equipment. If a trench is over 5' deep with vertical walls, it's an illegal trench for the workers. OSHA will give out serious fines for that. However a 20' deep trench can be dug, perfectly safe, if the walls are sloped properly. The trench they were playing must have had vertical walls. Even a 3' deep trench can kill someone if they're lying down or on their knees, especially a kid.

They aren't sink holes, and that term is misleading. The ground doesn't just collapse underneath people on the beach. Rather, when these holes are dug deeply, imagine that the sand will eventually become too heavy to hold up, and it's an avalanche of sand. The hole fills in so quickly as the sides collapse and people are buried in sand instead of snow. The sand is too dense for any trapped person to find air, and they quickly succumb.

If family values means lack of safety for their kids, then sure. The kid passed because the parents didn't teach them to not stand in a narrow hole that's taller than them, and not to venture far out into the water(she said that she thinks the beach is safe, but clearly not because there is a drowning hazard, and a suffocation hazard if you dig holes).

When I say it I mean older folks know of the dangers because they’ve had experience of this type of thing. I was shocked how many people on the comments did not know about it until this case.
