@@TeamStingray_What are you talking about he’s right? So you think the 2003 is darker that the comics? Defiantly not and 2012 is definitely darker than 87.
@@TeamStingray_ your on c r a c k if you think Tmnt 2003 was darker than the comics. The comics had on screen deaths, 2003 didn’t. And 2012 was not lighter than the 80s one. 2012 implied death while 80s had no death added until the final season.
2003 is my all time favourite interpretation. Perfect mix of the 80s cartoon and the darkness of the og comics. Best Shredder, best plotlines, best theme song. So underrated, glad you're giving it some spotlight!
I agree. It was pretty dark but still fun. It had such a better story and better ending. Maybe it's just me but I loved Fast Forward and back into sewers seasons. The only character I like more in 2012 are Splinter and Leonardo. Everyone else was cooler to me. Shredder was such a highlight of 2003 show
I grew up with 03 turtles so it is the right turtleverse for me. Mix of edgyness, robotic characters, blasters, spaceships and splinter's stories and teachings about being a honorable warrior made this series very impressive. For some unknown reason my favorite character is Bishop. He remained undefeated and kept going his own cruel intentions.
Best Shredders* haha. I kinda like too just how weird the franchise is in general. Like, they have a parody of the Justice League, a unique take on Atlantis, space dinosaurs, and an interdimensional Japanese-style fighting tournament. What a time.
I feel like all 4 of the TMNT cartoons each have something it does best that the others don't: 80s TMNT had the largest roster of characters 2003 TMNT had the best overarching plotline and the best version of Shredder 2012 TMNT had the best characterization for the Turtles, Splinter and Karai Rise of the TMNT has by far the best action and animation Basically all of the shows have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Agree with what's said, but personally I enjoy the characterisation of the 2003 version more than the 2012 one. I cannot stand what they did with Casey, April, and even Don to an extent.
I'd argue that 2012 Shredder is a bit better than 2003 Shredder. Imo, 2012 Shredder was more intimidating whenever he fought and carried an air of menace a bit higher than 2003. But, I'll freely admit 2003 was more brutal and merciless.
The 2003 tmnt messed me up as a child because on of the episodes Donatello went to the future were master splinter died and the rest of the turtles died by the end of the episode
Yeah I just watched that episode yesterday! It honestly broke me. Was terrible to watch, but hey at least it made me realize that I didnt want a "dark, violent Turtles-series" after all 😭💔
For me it was Insane in the Membrane that episode was beyond creepy not mention that Demon episode whre they went into the haunted mansion. God no wonder i had trouble sleeping as a child.
I would honestly say that Leo is still an interesting and more nuanced character, often having to make tough decisions as a leader or grappling with his code of Bushido. The only thing is that well, his siblings have more defined archetypes. Raphael is the hot head, Donatello is the smart one, Michelangelo is the fun one etc. Leonardo is hard to define like that, so most default to calling him just the leader.
I agree. Ive never understood how Leo could be considerd boring when both Mikey and Raph are fun but just as much cliches of the angry loner and the jokster of the team
He used to be my least favorite, but after getting older I began to understand and found him quite relatable, especially being the leader of my seven siblings.
Ill tell you wut leo is : (Warning i am a extreme leo fan who kinda hates anyone who just looks at leo in a bad way so take this with a grain of salt ) Hes depressed , he pushes homshelf to far , taking ALL responcibility , gets blamed for everything that goes wrong and all he wants to do is take care and protect the ppl he loves , but they just give him shit!
Honestly, Leo is a "ninja" not the "samurai" so there is no reason to follow code of Bushido. I think that's why I like 2012 Splinter. "Seek victory, not fairness."
Yay someone is finally talking about the 2003 version of tmnt on TH-cam (seriously there are like next to no videos talking about it besides the movie which often is reviewed by someone who hasn’t watched the 2003 version)
@@omn8612 Oh yeah I'm aware of your video. My thing was there are like 2-3 videos on this platform that manilty talk about 2k3 version in a review format. I mean excluding this video your video is the 2nd most recent video I can find talking about this show and that came out 3 years ago.
I’ll say this, I feel like Leonardo’s (2003) main characteristic is spiritual. He adopts Splinter’s view of the world and his conflicts come from grappling with the fact his brothers haven’t.
The thing with TMNT that i noticed that they never have dissapointing actions, aside from Bay's TMNT ofc. From the 2003 "edgy" version, 2007 movie that explored new enemy, and even 2012 Nick version, even the latest insanely whacky 2019 version, all of them has a great selling point that revolved around their action scenes. Which is a damn miracle if you ask me
That's the main gripe I had with the Bay's turtles, they don't do a lot of ninja moves, they just shoulder charge and whack you a bit since they have super strength and have to hold back from punching someone's head off.
The 2003 series is in a way the only animated version of TMNT that almost adapts the original Mirage comics. It has the best episodes seasons by season, great story arcs (like the Turtles in Space & A few of the Shredder episodes), gives each of the turtles character developments (even Leo if you watch the first half of S4) and got the origin right (even though they extend it bit by bit). I recommend watching the series but only watch the first five seasons as seasons 6 & 7 being nothing more than cash grabbing way to sell toys and causing the downfall of the series. My Rank:(9/10) The 2012 series is what I consider a combination of the original comics & the 80's series, I was a bit skeptical about it at first due to the character designs but as a shock I grew from liking the series to loving it. The series kept getting better and better season by season, the voice acting is just brilliant, the Easter eggs, nods to past versions and the appearance of the 80's Turtles are enough to make a lifelong fan smile, the action scenes are just epic, the characters are given a major improvement (even Splinter) and the 2012 Shredder is what I consider the best version of the character. All five seasons are a must watch and to be honest I would love to see this series make a return. Rank (10/10)
Making April a “mutant” was their way of making Donatello’s crush less creepy. In the comics (and probably even in the 2003 series), April was a drawing come to life created using the Kirby pen. This may have also inspired their decision to make her an “experiment” by the Kraang.
I never got what was so creepy about it. Yeah, he was an animal, but he was also sentient/sapient so there's no issues about consent. I mean, what's so different about an anthropomorphic animal and an alien, which we LOVE to fetishize in media.
@@TheDONing1 For me, it's not so much 'creepy' as it is just kind of odd to think about too deeply. Like if I see people create headcanon kids for them, my brain can't help but overanalyze how they'd have even procreated since human biology and turtle biology doesn't exactly match up, even if the turtle is anthropomorphic. If I don't overthink it, it doesn't bother me, but just past surface level, things become a bit weird. I don't really judge anyone who ships it, though.
I have to disagree about Leo's character in the 2003 show. From the beginning of the show Leo is shown to be the leader not only cause he abides by splinters teachings more than his brothers but he also has benefited and become arguably the greatest fighter of all of his brothers. Raph is blinded by his rage and lets his emotions get the better of him, Mikey is more into having a good time than a good fight, and Donnie can hold his own but relies on tech and when push comes to shove his brothers are doing the fighting while he disarms a bomb or something. Leo takes pride in being in charge because he feels he has earned his place rightfully. Leo's character is defined by his teachings, similar to how some people attach themselves so close to an idea they lose a sense of who they are when someone brings that into question. Whenever Leo makes a mistake he takes sole responsibility for it as he is the responsible sibling. Leo can't afford to let his guard down or indulge in hobbies like his brothers do. He has to be the best not only for himself but for his brothers and if he isn't then his whole self is brought into question. Leo arguably goes through one of the most impactful character arcs in the 2003 show (excluding fast forward and back to the sewer as for me the show really ends at season 5). When the turtles fight Shredder in space and are saved at the last second Leo doesn't get to come home after that fight. Yea his brother's failed, splinter failed, but above all else HE failed. He bares the weight of that failure and acknowledges that they got lucky. This time really hits Leo that his training failed, that whatever he has dedicated his life towards wasn't enough. So right after Leo becomes a hard ass more than Raph even. He doesn't tolerate the nonsense with the team and regularly snaps at them for joking after a conflict. It gets to the point where splinter realizes the only way to get through to Leo is to engage him in sparing as Leo is obsessed with becoming a better warrior. Leo lashes out and exclaims that he failed and he could have cost his family their lives. It is only through out the rest of the season and even a re-assertion in his dragon spirit and lack of a spirit weapon in season 5 that Leo comes to terms with who he is as the leader of the team. I saw this vid when it first came out and it really bothered me that Leo gets a bad wrap cause he is "too serious" or "generic leader" but throughout the series we are shown that Leo takes things more seriously as he takes on the burdens of his family and feels the weight of the decisions on himself everyday. Its not enough that Leo is a passable student, Leo has to be good enough to take on any threat in case his family can't fight. In case you hadn't noticed Leo is still my favorite turtle after all these years, I know someone else wrote how he essentially has PTSD from the fight with Shredder and I agree. This review is one of my favorite you have put out simply for the Nostalgia of watching all the 2003 episodes with my younger brother on cwkids. Some of the bests moments of my childhood where me and him got to enjoy the show together and felt connected in my eyes. Thanks man. Sincerely donated towards the part 2, Joe L.
Said it bro Leo always been my favorite turtle he's always been such a badass in my opinion and he's a great character I'm really glad that you said this man 🔥
Just surviving isn't enough for him, he HAS to be perfect, as any kind of failure could mean death to his family. This Leo, more so than the other versions, embodies this toxic perfectionism, I think. It's one of the reasons that I love him so much, but many others just look at his surface level attributes and write him off as 'boring'
Who the neck likes a person like this??? I wouldn't! How the duck can a person like 2003 Leo even have a life friends stable nerves or a family with his big head always stuck up his small shell??? How could he ever think right if all he smells is his own bs??? That's not personality or toughness, that's insecurity and ego. And his hurting Splinter that one time during training just shows to prove what an insufferable intolerant JERK he was in that show! Splinter Jr??? Lol that's def an understatement to the max! And Casey and his voice actor Can NOT act, and Splinter sounds like he's smoked 3pks a day for 30 years and don't give a rat's buttocks! The multiplied Shredders was stupid, utrom Shredder was stupid.. and he too sounds like 2014 Shredder on helium! Karai she sucked, and Baxter Stockman wasn't a villain but a victim, and so that was snot! Nostalgia is a hella drug ain't it??? 👎 😂
@@spiderlegs157 no toxic was right. You'd have no friends being like this for real, let alone a team. No wonder Raphael was always stressed out and pissed off! I would be too! Seriously
I gotta go with the 2003 series. I prefer the darker tone and interpretations. But by god the best thing about the 2003 series is the Shredder. He is just so good that he ruined all other versions for me.
@Sandra Kurup 2012 was....okay. The 2003 was better the 2012 had more focus on character development but the shipping was cringe especially the weird relationship between Donnie and April and the the gross incest relationship between Leo and Karai and don't use the excuse that that aren't blood related that's not the point. They should be FAMILY not....blech. Also the thing between Mona Lisa and Raph was too rushed didn't have enough time to fully develop. As for 2003 the voice acting was fantastic the action and story was blended very well. Raph has his Brooklyn accent perfectly. I also enjoyed the 4th season in TMNT 2003 where Leo went through the attitude change after their fight with Karai and Shredder Leo went through a dark spell for most of that season after being stabbed by Karai and was suffering from PTSD. Splinter from the 2012 show looks like he's based off of the TMNT Archie Comics Splinter he WAS younger. As for April her mutant story IS half assed and then there is like I said the weird relationship with Donnie....and we got a stupid love triangle. Shredder from 2003 is a HECK of a lot scarier then the 2012 one the main Shredder the utram one was a genocidal maniac....not to mention in one episode he was like Hitler. But one shredder was good enough and I think they added two other Shredders which really wasn't needed other then Karai taking up the mantle of her stepfather and becoming Shredder.
Always a treat to hear someone talk about THESE two specific versions of the turtles, maybe I’m just not looking in the right places but I barely hear people talk about the 2003 and Nick shows. Can’t wait for Part 2!
@@weirdyyy006 Oh Yes! Imagine that! 2012's Turtles, 2003's Turtles, 1986's Turtles, and 1984's Turtles, all meet! Heck, even for a greater laugh I'd even throw in 2019's Turtles in there too! LOL! But we'd better wait for 2023's Turtles as well to be complete here. They may actually might surprise us.. Surprise Us.. with something really good! 😂 👍
I love 2003, I was raised with those turtles. The turtles felt like my brothers and Splitter felt like the father I never had. & this was the first time I heard Seth Green as Leo and he sounds Amazing
Leonardo is the one with the strongest sense of justice, and honor. He's really compassionate but also stoic, and takes the shoulder of the leader so the others can pursue their hobbies. He works almost like a straight man of the group when he's not training harder than Robin does in Titan's Tower.
I like both series The 2003 series are closer to the comics And 2012 having a good enough representation of turtles (or you could say I am a victim of my nostalgia whatever works best for y'all)
the reason why the writers never resolve the april and donnie plot is because the series wasn`t finish when the series was in development. nick wanted the series out early.it one of the main reasons why april`s mom arc wasn`t resolve either or they didn`t really do anything with casey jones. they only let the writers finish two seasons and had they write the rest. which is not a good idea since that means they had to make up ideas for eps to fill up spots. i believe nick just eager to do the toys sells
@@TeamStingray_ actually I find out this isnt true. Nick simply wanted to keep the series lighthearted after they saw how dark season 2 was getting,so they canceled future ideas for storylines. But I still do believe Nick wanted more eps feature mutants to sell toys given how there was a plethora of them in season 3
Ehh, Leo is my favorite. Especially in 2003. They had an arc where Leo had to leave because he was emo. It's a great arc and it starts from "The Ancient One."
Initially I didn't like the 2012 TMNT, but it quickly grew to be my fav. I liked the characterization & how they seemed more like brothers & a family. The backstories were better to me. I just wish it wasn't so "kiddy" in nature & "out there".
@Kono Mono Clearly you've missed the point. There are many shows made for kids that adults can enjoy and/or have more adult themes. Avatar for instance, while it did have it's "kiddy content", was a far more serious series w/ more adult themes slipped in. The new TMNT series is just plan "kids zone" in comparison to its other incarnations. And the "kid factor" is used to make up for the poor plot for the new series. I'm sure it'll improve over time like the previous "Nick TMNT" cartoon, but I'll just skip this installment of the franchise & wait for a reboot in about 5 yrs or so.
Leo is my favorite Turtle from every series and movie especally the 2003 series and 2007 movie. I like simplicity in lots of spots in things i like so Leo is great. I love his badass moments and the fact that he almost always knows what to do in a situation. The 2003 series was my introduction to the Turtles and he interested me right away from the swords, the blue bandana being my favorite color and i gotta admit i think I've always had a mini crush on Leo. Im a boy too so that bothers me to think about... The rest a all great but i like particular versions from particular shows so it usually fluctuates depending on the series.
Leo was the responsible Turtle, the one who held the family together, a fierce leader and at the same time a tender brother. But my favorite in all series was Raphael, the rebellious, hardheaded badass turtle :D
0:21 Well, you're an outsider, alright. TMNT fans have been just as toxic as other fandoms. Apparently, the '03 show got bombarded w/ hate from the 80s fans so much that the writers felt the need to trash the '87 series in the finale "Turtles Forever". When clips of the 2012 show were uploaded on TH-cam, the videos also got bombarded w/ dislikes & negative comments by both '87 & '03 fans. Predictably, the 2018 series is now the new punching bag.
As someone who grew up on the old 90’s turtles and who watched every animated incarnation of the turtles so far I have to say I think the 2003 turtles are the best. The 2012 turtles relied little too much on the 90’s version for my taste, the humor fell flat most of the time, they dragged things out too much like the Kari thing or will splinter die or not. When it focused on action and the story was tight is when the 2012 turtles was at its strongest.
I agree with you Cartoonking. I think 2003 writing and tone was more consistent than 2012. One thing I always like about the first 5 seasons of the 2003 series is that when they introduce a new element or character it somehow pay off later on in future seasons. Like for example, agent bishop clones and how one of them became their version of the rat king or the crystal in their sewer lair.
Foley Asamoah oh most definitely, the writing was definitely tighter and more consistent than the 2012. You’d have the Kramg invade New Your and mutate the city, then several episodes where they messed around at the barn not doing anything important only to come back and fix everything in New York in two episodes. I think the 2003 show had a rule that most characters should at least have two appearances to flesh them out more, witch I really liked.
I tried watching the 2012 version, honestly I did, multiple times in fact, but it just didn't work for me. My last, and final, attempt was when I started watching the mutagen arc (the part where a new thing mutates repeatedly each new episode) right after I finished watching Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and yeah, suffice to say the lighthearted approach to the mutation topic just didn't fly for me and I dropped it. Eh. Sorry.
Honestly, I love the IDW comics take on TMNT, it's like the perfect version with each brother having their own unique arc and struggles. It combines fantasy and science fictionally oddly natural together with the turtles' origin being a mix of the two elements. It's really fun but they don't hold back on the drama and darker stuff. I like how they naturally introduce each character and everything.
I agree that the idw turtles are the best thing to come out since the 03 series. What I like most about it is each turtles individual struggles, even Mikey despite being the most carefree has his tense moments. Personally, my heart is with the 2003 ninja turtles, the 2012 series was good for its own reasons (especially in later seasons), but there were some elements I didn't really like about it. The idw series is a good mix of all tmnt lore and to me, is the definitive ninja turtles experience
The reason the 2012 Raphael has green eyes is because when he was first expose to that green mutant liquid he accidentally let it get inside his eyes and he said "I'm fine but whatever you do, don't let this thing in your eyes. It hurts" And just like that you can tell that he cares about his brother ever since they can talk, and I love it.
I always saw Leo as the by the books one who takes the whole ninja thing much more serious than the others. He’s the guy to tell everyone not to do something for their safety, but then do it himself without question. That way he’s always the one in danger, not putting his brothers at risk. At least in 2003, 2012 has a somewhat different Leo. As you already described
2012-2017 show makes me super nostalgic and love it to bit's even with the April love triangle, But I wached the 2003 show a bit as a kid and re wached it fully as an adult and I absolutely loved it
So far for me: Show AND Turtles: BOTH. One who revived my love while the other being an AWESOME successor. Leo is MY Fave turtle and truthfully in MY opinion, 2003 Leo’s struggles as a leader are just as challenging as 2012 Leo’s which is why I love both Leos Splinter: 2012. You already explained why I love this version. Still love the 2003 version as my 2nd Fave April: 2012. Though I agree with the points you gave and though I still love the 2003 version, I think I relate more to the 2012 version than the 2003 version in some aspects Casey: 2003. Love the big bro vibe he gives for the turtles plus him not being a jerk all the time
I really don't know why I dislike the 2012 Casey so much, but I really do. I think maybe it's because him and April being younger and doing the whole love triangle thing with Don is awkward. Not bad, just awkward. It also goes on for SO long. I can also see Tayo's point about 2012 April being Mary Sue-ish. Psychic powers, half mutant krang thing, becomes a ninja just like the turtles. It's a new take on her though, which is why I do like it. TMNT is about new characters and shifting the dynamics. If we didn't play with characters, roles, and their archetypes, we wouldn't have the absolutely amazing IDW TMNT comics with best new characters Jenny and Alopex.
I've been in this fandom for almost eight years now, starting at the beginning of 5th grade. It is tru that this fandom doesn't get a lot of coverage on anything like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, ect. but it is still an amazing fandom. When a bunch of TMNT fans get together, we get super hyped up, much like other fans from other fandoms. We also don't mind getting completely dressed up to let out our fandom pride when we go to things like Comicon. But, outside of that all, we're pretty much silent about our fandom. For example, the most I will do at school to show this fandom is wearing one of my TMNT tshirts or quietly hum the tune to one of the theme songs, but I don't feel the need to spout random facts about TMNT and its universe (this is partially bc no one ever really talks about TMNT so I don't have to correct wrong information). Personally, I just think we're a little more of a quieter fandom, but that doesn't mean I wouldnt love to see more of the franchise. Anyways, that's all. Sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted to give my thoughts. COWABUNGA, BOOYAKASHA, PEACE OUT MA DUDES
It's a smaller fandom, but is far from being devoid of toxicity. Every TMNT series has been hated on, and even led to some writers firing back (ex: Turtles Forever's treatment of the 80s characters).
2003 and 2012 are tied, I do like the 2012 version better because of character development and they took old stuff and expanded it into a greater story
Leonardo has always been my favorite of the turtles! Perhaps it is because I like blue or because Leo is the focus for the brothers. Often, he is also the one pushing himself to be better, living up to a standard he sets for himself that is too high to actually reach.
2003 was the best. The fight up shreddeds tower. The battle nexus tournament. The Triceratons . So many well executed storylines. Leo even leaves the turtles after cutting master splinter. Finds himself and makes a believable return.
I actually like Leo in the 2003 show it might be because of his voice acting or the fact that my favourite episode of the show is tales of Leo where they dig into the relationship between Leo and each of his brothers as well as him and splinter plus I cried when Raph cried so yeah I think the 2003 show had the best version of Leo even though some of you might disagree with me
"Leonardo is the least interesting one" siiiiiiigh, swear to God if a character isn't on the nose with a trait they are "boring" to people. He's the responsible, cool headed, role model type. The go to one to get them out of situations. He cracks slick comments, has his anger moments, intelligent in the battlefield, more disciplined. Sheesh for fucks sake. Not that hard. A mix of the rest while having his own traits.
RaginDXDemon i still remember episodes when the hideout got attacked by the foot ninjas and leo was off training or something and the turtles lost so leo came back found the turtles man handled shredder then found them a new hideout the man’s just badass
@@fightingmedialounge519 No he has flaws, as well as strengths. He clearly takes the martial arts displine the most serious out of his brothers. With that mindset, Raph is the generic edgy hero, Don is the generic nerd, Mikey is the generic comic relief fool.
Having flaws doesn't stop you from being the generic hero; in fact those flaws you listed inforce that idea. I get wanting to defend your favorite character, but fans of Leo's archetype seem to be unable to understand differing opinions.
I think the 2012 is better in regards to consistent quality. I absolutely hated the design changes in 03. The turtles looked too boxy and shiny in the latter half of the show's run. And Flash Forward & Back to the Sewer were the worst seasons.
@@RandomBlackGamer Season 2 is where the cracks shown but it really started with season 3. For some reason someone on the staff thought it was a good idea to have 8 episodes in the barn, Karai's character was literally ping ponged in each episode(sometimes she was good sometimes she was bad it kinda got tiring) tons of OT fan pandering where they have a character show up for one episode and that's about it. Casey barely got any development and it felt like the April subplot wasn't going to go anywhere. I also didn't like Tales of the Yokai Season 4 has all of these problems but amplified, the space arc lasted for 16 episodes which also had a dumb shipping subplot because the show can't have a female character appear in more than one episode without them being shipbait and April became OP. The Earth episodes weren't that much better with Broken Foot outright pissing me off and the final episodes pretty much show me that the show isn't really consistent in telling the concept of vengeance when its super flip floppy.
Everyone's favorite turtle's series is usually the one they grew up with but fans tend to like every version with the exception of The Next Mutation and maybe the Bay ones (although they aren't bad, just not the best).
The 2012 series was my entry into the series. The 2003 series was the second one I watched. To this day, I'm still amazed by how many things I love from the former was introduced to the franchise by the latter (not least of all Karai, be it that I prefer her 2012 series-version).
2002 Will always be my favorite iteration of the Turtles, everything about it is so incredible, except for Fast Forward was kind of a waste but it hints at the ending in a cute way and the animation was so good especially with the weapons, they were 4Kids and getting away with stuff that they don't allow in anime is laughable and amazing that they got away with stuff like that for kids. Even if their Shredder is fake, its such great idea to have him come back after so many scenes of his demise, ended up revealing that he's an Utrom that only took the name and appearance of Shredder just to strike fear in people, and kept coming back even in data form in the very last season. I like some of the stuff 2012 did, especially the huge tribute to the 80s turtles, but I can't get behind the janky animation especially in fight scenes. 2002 turtles has the most impressive choreographed animation especially with a character named Bishop. April in hand to hand was so painful to watch, and that one time I saw Leo trying to talk to Karai was cringy by the way they moved.
My biggest issue with Leo in the 2012 series wasn't the change of voice actors; it was him being a hypocritical pain in the shell to this brothers! He was always a jerk to everyone about their 'little buddies' in the series: -Mickey and Leatherhead -Raph and Slash -Donnie and Metalhead *To be fair, Leatherhead AND Slash both tried to hurt some of the team at some point, but eventually calmed down. While Karai on the other Foot (I mean other HAND) was clearly working with the enemy, took joy in what she was doing on the opposite side while Leo was 'convinced' that she wanted to split from the Foot... OMG Leo kept going on and on and on about getting Karai on their side and that she's good blah blah blah. He caused far more harm than good to his brothers in that regard...
Yeah, there was hypocrisy going on there. But I think that also made him realistic as a character. He's flawed, and in certain ways was blinded by his own feelings regarding Karai. However, I do think it wasn't entirely selfish. He was also driven to reunite Master Splinter with his daughter. He wanted her to be part of their family.
I'm gonna be a lawyer The little buddies thing makes sense, Leatherhead held Donnie by the face, Slash nearly killed Mikey and Donnie, and Metalhead held Mikey by the face, Metalhead is a killing machine ( literally ) He was able to wipe out a lot of kraang And it makes sense, after telling Karai that she is Hamato Yoshi's daughter 10/15 times, it's about time you stop, If you keep telling her, and she still doesn't listen, then she still won't listen, but Leo loves his master so much that he wants to give him everything he lost
There was an episode in the 2nd season of TMNT 2012 where Splinter called out Leo due to him abusing his role on the team aka Leo acting less leader, and more dictator. And there are some fans of 2012 TMNT who thought Leo during this episode was being punished unfairly by Splinter over Raph, Donnie, and Mikey not following his orders. I thought Splinter was in the right for calling Leo out and reminding him that as leader his role is to inspire the others, and help them improve, not act like a dictator and treat the others as slaves.
People have said that the 2012 series ignored the 2003 series. No references, no characters from that series making appearances. But those people haven't been paying attention very well. - Karai in her guise as the Shredder's (Adopted) daughter who starts to question the Foot Clan's morals is a direct reference to the 2003 Karai. - In the "Invasion" double header episode which ends the second season we get to see the EPF. - Kraang Subprime's looks with the scar running down his body is the 2012 series version of Ch'Rell. - In season three we get to see Agent Bishop - AND we get to see the Utrom Council. - It also turns out that very much like Ch'Rell, Kraang SubPrime was a member of the Utrom Council before he betrayed them. So people who say that the 2012 completely ignored the 2003 series, re-watch the episodes, because you're wrong.
Karai is usually portrayed as having more honor than Shreder in most continuities. EPF is mentioned there but never again. Subprime scar might be a reference but I’m not sure. Though in my opinion it doesn’t really matter if Prime and subprime are Chrell references because they are such different characters and they just kind of get dropped from the story.
@@cartoonking1789 The EPF continue to appear in the third and forth season, for example when the Turtles, Casey and April go back to New York, the EPF is seen guarding the city and in "Tokka versus the world" we see them in full action. And during the "Wanted Bebop and Rockstaedy" triple header, they can be seen fighting against Krang and Shredder's dimension X invasion.
They Butchered Agent Bishop, Karai always had more honour then Shreder and Karai turning on Shreder was done little bit to ouickly in my opinion, Utrom Council is just a reference by name I can't remember if Mortu was even on the council
I liked the relationship between April and Donatello, as I think it humanized them both a bit. It would have been better if it had been made official before the show ended, but it was still pretty cute.
boy Leo was the most disciplined regarding martial arts, the most skilled, the one who had the most character development;, he was struggling to be a worthy leader, he was the most focused when it came to missions but he also had times to joke with his brothers, he definitely was the most interesting, I bet your favorite was Michelangelo **stares right into your eyes**
This reminds me of the best sundaymorning tv line-up I had as a kid: -Action-man (2000 series) -He-man (2002 series) -TMNT (2003 series) -Power Rangers (2003 season) What a line-up. Couldn't be better
I love Leonardo, he's the cool big brother who holds the team as a unity in the field, and has a lot of charm to him when he's not being overly serious.
I loved this video! I can't wait for part 2! And i really wish for you to talk about Karai, specially in the 2012 version ! Or at least Karai's and Leo's relationship 💙♥️
5:50 no cap. That made me laugh. Leonardo for real a virgin. He the only turtle that didn't get kissed by a girl or had an official girlfriend, unless you count Karai (kind of).😂💀
for me these two series are ever so close...i originally watched a few of the 2012, the discovered the 2003 series and binged it and it was amazing, easily better than 2012. I've now rewatched 2012 again through two months or so, and i honestly feel like i have to give 2012 the slight edge, for multiple reasons. First, the very first word is TEENAGE mutant ninja turtles. 2012 is the most accurate representation of them as TEENAGERS out of any show or movie. The changes to April and Casey were fresh, even though Casey in 2012 is almost unbearably annoying. But teenage April was a nice fresh twist, and I'm glad they did this. Secondly, the 2012 show has an almost continuous rivalry with Shredder. In the 2003 version, Shreddar is largely absent in season 2 and 3, then finally comes back at the end of season 3 for a quick 2-episode climax. Finally, in 2012, the rivalry between Splinter and Shredder is perfect. Tale of the Yokia is one of the greatest episodes ever, EVER. Plus, all four season finales in 2012 (each a two-episode story) are excellent. I see a lot of people preferring the 2003 series because it's more serious, gritty, and dark. But in 2012, SPLINTER GETS MURDERED, TWICE. Pretty dark. 2012 has the best of it all, it's fun and light, but sometimes dark and serious, the cgi is amazing, and it's just good. Really really good. I love the 2003 series, but I can't put it above 2012 as a whole, even though I really prefer how badass Donny and Mikey are in 2003, whereas in 2012 they're seen as less tough then Raph and Leo. In conclusion, I am a huge fan of 2003 and 2012, and even if i prefer one by the slightest margin, I don't have to pick, I can watch and love both, and between the five seasons of each show, almost 250 excellent episodes.
2012 series is the best for me. Lots of Easter eggs. It was more light hearted than 2003, but still had some grit. Also felt that April and Casey as teens made waaaayyyy more sense.
2003 4 me!! it was much closer to the dark tone of the OG 80s comics without the blood and swearing lol but best version ever the only tmnt cartoon i still re watch today
I actually like the redesigns in the new tmnt show because it's subtle. This is something that the movie did and you can kinda tell the differences by looking at their eyes.
2:41 actually, they kind of retconned the 2003 series to be that exact interpretation. It was in one of the episodes with The Ancient One and young turtles.
I’ve seen the first three animated series so I can say I like all three for different reasons 1987 was fun though the last three seasons are really dark 2003 a dark fateful adaptation 2012 combines the two but stand on its own. I’ve seen the first 14 episodes of rise and honestly I’m not a fan
Finally someone is comparing the 2003 show! I see it tends to be forgotten and it did do a lot of things really well. Unfortunately it does suffer from terrible 2000 cartoon tropes. 2003 Raph will always be my favorite though
7:34 YASSS I loved Dominic but Jason bings really just nailed it. I remember watching the show and I was like “wait why does Leo’s voice sound weird” and it was only for 5 episodes and I loved it and Boom Seth green.
I liked 03 better because it was the only series where the ooze was never fought over, shredder never knew anything about the ooze, was only mentioned a few times to explain the turtles & splinter's mutation, none of the turtles had a creepy crush on april & the only series where the turtles weren't addicted obsessed with just pizza but were with all types of junk food
I can confirm that the 2012 turtles actually feel like siblings the most out of all the shows. Source: I also have 3 siblings and we live in Florida which is essentially like being turtles
Leo is a tactician and the most capable in combat as well as a level headed logical character which is why he was selected as the leader. And as such it's his responsibility to keep his murder hobo brethren in line and focused on the task at hand. He wants to be able to let loose with his brothers but he can't because it's not his place. He's only a boring character if don't bother to look any deeper than the surface characteristics.
The first 5 seasons of 2003's TMNT are actually pretty adult-friendly, making most of their episodes re-watchable. Gotta give 2003 a 1up over the 2012 version for that.
The one thing every TMNT fan has to appreciate no matter what they’re personal preference is that the creators didn’t disrespect TMNT like how they disrespected Teen Titans with that absolutely awful remake that is Teen Titans Go
In 2003, they are much stronger, muscular, smarter, more emotional, more serious and fun, as well as their voices, for dubbing in my country even better than the original. While in 2012 they were done as a transfer blam, everything opposite from 2003 that I mentioned. It's too childish, kids would watch it and understand it by the age of twelve and stop, while I watch 2003 a lot at the age of twenty-two and I will again when the real nostalgia hits me.
Kind of funny how the 2003 show adopts the comics with a lighter tone and the 2012 show adopts the 1987 show with a darker tone.
Switch lighter tone and darker tone around
@TeamStingray_ but he's absolutely correct
@@TeamStingray_but why it makes sence
Well it is the closest thing to the original Mirage comics. Though I do believe the 2012 version of Splinter is better.
Best Shredders* haha. I kinda like too just how weird the franchise is in general. Like, they have a parody of the Justice League, a unique take on Atlantis, space dinosaurs, and an interdimensional Japanese-style fighting tournament. What a time.
If only lazy ass Nickelodeon would put it on Blu-ray
I feel like all 4 of the TMNT cartoons each have something it does best that the others don't:
80s TMNT had the largest roster of characters
2003 TMNT had the best overarching plotline and the best version of Shredder
2012 TMNT had the best characterization for the Turtles, Splinter and Karai
Rise of the TMNT has by far the best action and animation
Basically all of the shows have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Also feel as if Rise has the best New York
Agree with what's said, but personally I enjoy the characterisation of the 2003 version more than the 2012 one. I cannot stand what they did with Casey, April, and even Don to an extent.
@@moonknight6075 And Mikey too
I'd argue that 2012 Shredder is a bit better than 2003 Shredder.
Imo, 2012 Shredder was more intimidating whenever he fought and carried an air of menace a bit higher than 2003. But, I'll freely admit 2003 was more brutal and merciless.
@@aceofsharks9837 2012 Shredder was an Incel
The 2003 tmnt messed me up as a child because on of the episodes Donatello went to the future were master splinter died and the rest of the turtles died by the end of the episode

I did both
The 2003 adaptation has by far the most interesting plot developments
I would honestly say that Leo is still an interesting and more nuanced character, often having to make tough decisions as a leader or grappling with his code of Bushido. The only thing is that well, his siblings have more defined archetypes. Raphael is the hot head, Donatello is the smart one, Michelangelo is the fun one etc. Leonardo is hard to define like that, so most default to calling him just the leader.
I agree. Ive never understood how Leo could be considerd boring when both Mikey and Raph are fun but just as much cliches of the angry loner and the jokster of the team
I also agree, I can even argue that he is the most interesting out of the four in my opinion. He's also my favorite so...
He used to be my least favorite, but after getting older I began to understand and found him quite relatable, especially being the leader of my seven siblings.
Ill tell you wut leo is :
(Warning i am a extreme leo fan who kinda hates anyone who just looks at leo in a bad way so take this with a grain of salt )
Hes depressed , he pushes homshelf to far , taking ALL responcibility , gets blamed for everything that goes wrong and all he wants to do is take care and protect the ppl he loves , but they just give him shit!

Same, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who grew up with that show on 4Kids and Cartoon Network at the time.

@@PersianSlashuur shit, sorry. It's 2007 one

2003 was my favorite
That's the main gripe I had with the Bay's turtles, they don't do a lot of ninja moves, they just shoulder charge and whack you a bit since they have super strength and have to hold back from punching someone's head off.
@@chriscannon8144 true. Never realized that before. Bay's version's punch looked and sounded so weak compare to the animated version.
My Rank:(9/10)
The 2012 series is what I consider a combination of the original comics & the 80's series, I was a bit skeptical about it at first due to the character designs but as a shock I grew from liking the series to loving it.
M Curran this is exactly how I feel about both shows. Put unto words perfectly
I don’t like April and Casey Jones in the 2012 show though. They kinda ruin it for me
do the tmnt cartoon pee
Ankle Breaking Legend I liked April in 2012, I didn't really like Casey though.
I like 2012 April at first, until they turned her into Jean Gray. And I cannot stand 2012 Casey. He is bloody obnoxious
Making April a “mutant” was their way of making Donatello’s crush less creepy.
In the comics (and probably even in the 2003 series), April was a drawing come to life created using the Kirby pen.
This may have also inspired their decision to make her an “experiment” by the Kraang.
He never got with April and they dropped that so wdym
@@channel-re5uq it was canon in the end bro
@@singingwolf8997 maybe they adopt young mutants to rise then into outstanding citizens.

@@cartoonking1789 100 percent agree!!
Eh. Sorry.
CrazyTreehuggingElf it’s cool man, everyone has different taste.
AMEN, BROTHER!
And one thing that I Love in that series that deserves more recognition: Alopex the mutant arctic fox
I love this comment this is exactly what I think too
Jog Vodka, I liked the IDW comics of the TMNT the most too.
IDW comics are what made me like characters like Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady
The reason the 2012 Raphael has green eyes is because when he was first expose to that green mutant liquid he accidentally let it get inside his eyes and he said "I'm fine but whatever you do, don't let this thing in your eyes. It hurts"
And just like that you can tell that he cares about his brother ever since they can talk, and I love it.
what????? when did he say that???
I always saw Leo as the by the books one who takes the whole ninja thing much more serious than the others. He’s the guy to tell everyone not to do something for their safety, but then do it himself without question. That way he’s always the one in danger, not putting his brothers at risk. At least in 2003, 2012 has a somewhat different Leo. As you already described
2012-2017 show makes me super nostalgic and love it to bit's even with the April love triangle, But I wached the 2003 show a bit as a kid and re wached it fully as an adult and I absolutely loved it
In USA:Rob Paulsen acted 80s Raph and 2012 Donnie
In Serbia:Nikola Bulatović acted 80s Don,2003 Leo and 2012 Don
Gotta love these paralels
In Poland 2003 Raph and 2012 Shredder also had the same voice actor and I for one, a person with great auditory memory, was suffering so much

So far for me:
Show AND Turtles: BOTH. One who revived my love while the other being an AWESOME successor. Leo is MY Fave turtle and truthfully in MY opinion, 2003 Leo’s struggles as a leader are just as challenging as 2012 Leo’s which is why I love both Leos
Splinter: 2012. You already explained why I love this version. Still love the 2003 version as my 2nd Fave
April: 2012. Though I agree with the points you gave and though I still love the 2003 version, I think I relate more to the 2012 version than the 2003 version in some aspects
Casey: 2003. Love the big bro vibe he gives for the turtles plus him not being a jerk all the time
I line 2003 April more. She is more if a likeable big sister and less of a mary sue.
@@Nekufan1000000 I remember In the mirage turtles april was a half mutant.
TMNT 2012 was my gateway into the Turtles. I love it!

I hope you're doing well Xavier! I still love the content no matter the subject, and I will continue to stay subbed and watch with a close eye.
Leonardo has always been my favorite of the turtles! Perhaps it is because I like blue or because Leo is the focus for the brothers. Often, he is also the one pushing himself to be better, living up to a standard he sets for himself that is too high to actually reach.
I Like The 2003's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2003 was the best. The fight up shreddeds tower. The battle nexus tournament. The Triceratons . So many well executed storylines. Leo even leaves the turtles after cutting master splinter. Finds himself and makes a believable return.
I actually like Leo in the 2003 show it might be because of his voice acting or the fact that my favourite episode of the show is tales of Leo where they dig into the relationship between Leo and each of his brothers as well as him and splinter plus I cried when Raph cried so yeah I think the 2003 show had the best version of Leo even though some of you might disagree with me
When you said "Donatello desperately wants to show April his bo staff," haha I lost it!
That was kinda gross. Why did he include such sexual innuendo?
@@SweetChildofMine-l5y it was a joke 🤦♂️

So he's just generic hero guy.
He is supposed to be the all rounder of the team which makes him kinda boring
I think the 2012 is better in regards to consistent quality. I absolutely hated the design changes in 03. The turtles looked too boxy and shiny in the latter half of the show's run. And Flash Forward & Back to the Sewer were the worst seasons.
I disagree with the consistent quality it went bad after season 2 imo
@@LuckyBastard12345 It had it few bad episodes but overall the quality remained good. Season 2 was when they really started picking up imo.
@@RandomBlackGamer No I said after season 2, season 3/4 were kinda bad imo 5 was okay
@@LuckyBastard12345 Mind explaining why you hate those particular seasons?
@@RandomBlackGamer Season 2 is where the cracks shown but it really started with season 3. For some reason someone on the staff thought it was a good idea to have 8 episodes in the barn, Karai's character was literally ping ponged in each episode(sometimes she was good sometimes she was bad it kinda got tiring) tons of OT fan pandering where they have a character show up for one episode and that's about it. Casey barely got any development and it felt like the April subplot wasn't going to go anywhere. I also didn't like Tales of the Yokai
Season 4 has all of these problems but amplified, the space arc lasted for 16 episodes which also had a dumb shipping subplot because the show can't have a female character appear in more than one episode without them being shipbait and April became OP. The Earth episodes weren't that much better with Broken Foot outright pissing me off and the final episodes pretty much show me that the show isn't really consistent in telling the concept of vengeance when its super flip floppy.
The 2007 TMNT movie will always be my favourite, besides the 2003 series which I grew up with
Everyone's favorite turtle's series is usually the one they grew up with but fans tend to like every version with the exception of The Next Mutation and maybe the Bay ones (although they aren't bad, just not the best).
The 2012 series was my entry into the series.
The 2003 series was the second one I watched.
To this day, I'm still amazed by how many things I love from the former was introduced to the franchise by the latter (not least of all Karai, be it that I prefer her 2012 series-version).
7:38 Chris Griffin (voice actor Seth Green) does make a good Leo
2012 is my favorite out of any interpretation of the turtles
🎵Teenage Iron Ninja Turtle, Teenage Iron Ninja Turtle, Teenage Iron Ninja Turtle, Hero with a half brain, Ginger Power🎵
Can we get funding for this?
Very clever.
2003 was way better written. The characters were more consistent. Plus im a sucker for 2d animation so i might have a little preference towards it.
My biggest issue with Leo in the 2012 series wasn't the change of voice actors; it was him being a hypocritical pain in the shell to this brothers!
He was always a jerk to everyone about their 'little buddies' in the series:
-Mickey and Leatherhead
-Raph and Slash
-Donnie and Metalhead
*To be fair, Leatherhead AND Slash both tried to hurt some of the team at some point, but eventually calmed down.
I'm gonna be a lawyer
The little buddies thing makes sense, Leatherhead held Donnie by the face, Slash nearly killed Mikey and Donnie, and Metalhead held Mikey by the face, Metalhead is a killing machine ( literally ) He was able to wipe out a lot of kraang
And it makes sense, after telling Karai that she is Hamato Yoshi's daughter 10/15 times, it's about time you stop, If you keep telling her, and she still doesn't listen, then she still won't listen, but Leo loves his master so much that he wants to give him everything he lost

- In season three we get to see Agent Bishop
- AND we get to see the Utrom Council.
- It also turns out that very much like Ch'Rell, Kraang SubPrime was a member of the Utrom Council before he betrayed them.
So people who say that the 2012 completely ignored the 2003 series, re-watch the episodes, because you're wrong.
Well technically shredder kidnapped Karai and the guise was she was his blood daughter when in reality he stole her.
2012 series butchers a lot element of 2003 series.
Finally, Xavier covers the best shows about the heroes in a half shell!

for me these two series are ever so close...i originally watched a few of the 2012, the discovered the 2003 series and binged it and it was amazing, easily better than 2012.

I’ve seen the first three animated series so I can say I like all three for different reasons

Credit to the 2012 series for tying continuities together, even having several cameos from the other universes.
I can confirm that the 2012 turtles actually feel like siblings the most out of all the shows.

The one thing every TMNT fan has to appreciate no matter what they’re personal preference is that the creators didn’t disrespect TMNT like how they disrespected Teen Titans with that absolutely awful remake that is Teen Titans Go
Tbh, I don't mind leo's voice change in 2012 version, both voices are awesome.
2003’s intro Is Godly Ngl
I love both series and I also love the IDW comics
I love how both shows finish with a crossover with the 80’s Turtles. It’s obvious which show liked the original show more.
My favorite version of the TMNT?
The IDW comics. Seriously, it’s so, SO good.
