      it didn't need a combat overhaul, it just needed players to put in time past the first mission (the way that game played at the start was horrendous though), once you unlocked the moves and abilities each turtle was smooth and played differently than the next.

    • @toonhead2
      @toonhead2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow cool. This is one of my favorite TMNT games ever, I felt that players didn't have the patience for the game. I literally trained in the dojo to get accustomed to the combat. I always wanted to see a detailed video on the development of this game like what was planned and left out and other behind the scene info.

    • @moonymachine8125
      @moonymachine8125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@toonhead2 The combat was a lot deeper than it often gets credit for. We started off by modeling the basic combat system on Arkham which was a popular success at the time. However, we had a very enthusiastic combat designer who worked closely with our animators and QA tester every day to add more and more to the combat. We had a lot of prop weapons around the studio to play with, and they were often watching old kung fu movies or anything to inspire a cool new move. The only problem was, as some have learned, not many people even knew how to do most of the stuff that was put in the game. The dojo was the key for understanding how to fully enjoy the game, and many players likely skipped that altogether. The right thumbstick mechanic allowed for lots of moves to be added, but confused a lot of players I think. Even I, as one of the programmers of the game, didn't know how to do a lot of the moves. I was programming the nuts and bolts of certain game mechanics, and when I played I usually just spammed the basic attacks like a noob. I got to see all of the awesome stuff that was possible when some of the other team members would play. I just didn't know how to do any of it. XD

    • @toonhead2
      @toonhead2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@moonymachine8125 I see that's cool...Yeah I started playing it like Arkham and was thinking maybe I shouldn't and that's when I decided to go this the dojo. As a fan of Tmnt I thought it was a nice touch to actually train. I really felt you guys tried your best in making this game hence being patient with it. Then I was able to pull almost all of the moves at will. I was making a Tmnt fan game using this as inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

    • @moonymachine8125
      @moonymachine8125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Most of the assumptions I see people make about what kind of shortcomings ultimately limited the appeal of the game are pretty accurate. I'm not going to call anything out, but in spite of the unfortunate realities that prevent a big group project from achieving its perceived potential, we had a lot of passionate members on the team who really put their all into it. Our combat designer is the one who personally reached out to Partners in Kryme to ask them if we could use the song Turtle Power in the game!

    Despite the complaints about Out of The Shadows, once you got into a groove and you get the mechanics down, it plays like poetry in motion and can be pretty neat to be so in-synch that you finish an enemy off with all four turtles doing the movie Tatsu four shell take down. I personally loved out of shadows. I never had problems he did in video. I had it on xbox 360. Don and Raph were fun to be. When I play Raph and doc I did alot of countering and I loved power bombing with Raph lol. When u beat each stage unlock it in the arcade. When you go to arcade you play each level redesign in 2d and plays like old school turtles beat em up. Also turtles had trees and one is basicly team attacks for 2, 3, or all 4 turtles. Me and friend love doing Mikey and raph team attacks. I never stood hate for that game. We got so good we were grinding rails and in the shipyard jumping all over container while fighting. I won't lie though the learning curve is a bit steep. You really had to focus alot depending on what style you choose to do for each turtles. Like with Mikey when even I used him I just focus on combo's because he was much faster at it. Also Donny can make each turtle their own device in combat. I can't remember each turtles but Donny had a over size glove that can push back enemies and other stuff. Pretty raph had electric knuckles, I could be wrong.

      @@lutherheggs451 No need to throw insults because we don't like the same game lol When hitting the enemy doesn't feel right anymore, yeah, they kinda messed up, they even managed to somehow mess up just moving your turtles around. If you cant nail that down in a beat em up, oof. Never said it was "missing" anything. The arcade and SNES play the same, only difference in gameplay are the turtles have slightly different stats and that you can manually do certain moves that would be automatic on the arcade version but gameplay wise, they do play the same.

The Arkham Style combat is something we all love in games like Spider-Man or Arkham Knight, plus the whole realistic style Tmnt for me fits very well with that style. I only disagree with the combat portion of tmnt ofts. It was difficult at first. But once I learned more combos it was way easier. It was actually fun making up my on combo chains and mixing it with the other turtles. You can switch and combo together back and fourth. Much better online though. One thing I absolutely hated about that game was the horrible net code. It wasn't the greatest game but it was really fun. Especially raph with his grapple combos. And the special move is actually supposed to either be clockwise or counterclockwise. It was weird though. Same with the L1 R2 revive. Weird

    @GodzillaMendoza I think you missed a key element of the TMNTs In Time Reshelled game, and it is that it is NOT a revamped version of the SNES game itself, but of the ARCADE original. The SNES game was the famous port of the Arcade game that expanded more levels and bosses that the Arcade had. You can look up the difference between the Arcade Turtles in Time compared with the SNES version and then the Reshelled and you will clearly see what I mean. Regardless, Turtles in Time was the best sequel to the first Original Arcade TMNTs game, which only got a port to the SNES game called TMNTs II the Arcade game. It deserved a SNES treatment too.

    That's the kind of game that I think it would have been awesome to see with mods. I'm curious as to why Turtles in Time reshelled had the volume up too loud. some of the voices and sound effects sounded like they were elevated past the point they were supposed to be. And the 3D aspect to it really didn't lend a whole lot. I remember buying it for my PS3 sometime ago and since then I've gotten rid of my PS3 but not really missed this particular game. TMNT: OotS was.. so.. almost.. amazing.
    The combat timing was not to the taste of a lot of people. They aped a lot of it the style from Arkham, but it didn't have the same flow. Also, it was tricky to pull off the "rotate the joystick x/x" moves. Still, I adored that game. Blazed through it with two bff's day one. I was the only one that kept going back to it though. I loved the way they distinguished the turtles from each other, physically. They actually felt different as opposed to pallette swaps. Donnie ftw. Anyone wanna jam on 360 let me know.
    Re-Shelled was all poopy for me. I loathed the 8 direction combat. It broke what didn't need fixing. SNES version is still my favorite. Command throws as opposed to random, picking colours for the turtles, dash and back attack? None of that in the arcade version. Didn't stop all the "purists" for whining for an arcade port, though. Also, sometimes less is more. Players, I mean.

The game gives you so many options to completely dominate your opponents and the player didn't try a single one. Except maybe the specials.
    Re-shelled was a complete disappointment. Again, not trying to be mean, and I won't fault anyone for liking it, but to even imply it even comes to the SNES version, or even the arcade one... that's not an opinion, that's being objectively wrong.
