    The blockade and battle of Ryloth was a major event during the Clone Wars. I'll discuss the major mistakes made by the Separatists and the Republic in today's Episode of Star Wars Battle Breakdown.
    Star Wars Battle Breakdowns PLaylist: goo.gl/msmLFP
    Season 1 Episode 19 of Star Wars the Clone Wars, the Storm over Ryloth sees Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano attempt to break the Ryloth Blockade, with three Venator Star Destroyers against a Lucrehulk droid control ship, and munificent frigates. But, it wasn't easy. From poor use of starfighters, to laziness by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, I'll explain it all.

    Ah yes, the battle where Anakin commits a war crime by faking surrender in order to kamikaze the now exposed enemy.
    Good thing there are no Geneva Conventions in a galaxy far far away. It was a successful tactic, but makes the Separatists far less likely to accept legitimate surrenders in the future.

      ...and yet how many times has a Jedi said, "I fear that (insert whatever)"? lol
      Heck, TLJ even had Luke bring up the Jedi's hubris, which blinded them to Palpatine being Sidious despite being right in front of them the whole time and such.
      This is also an interesting topic talked about a little on "Everything Great About..." the Star Wars prequel films on how things might have turned out had Qui-Gon lived - a Jedi who is clearly much more open-minded, willing to stretch the rules and take risks and such - and had been the one to train Anakin rather than Obi-Wan - who is clearly more traditionalist in his own mindset. It makes one wonder whether Anakin would have been (as easily) manipulated by Palpatine and how differently things could have possibly played out.

    The CIS should have pressed the advantage the moment their reinforcements arrived with their larger ships as well as the fighters and bombers. The 4 additional Munificents acting in direct support (leaving the original 2 covering the command ship) of their would likely have wiped out the Venators. The Republic should have been more aggressive with their attack craft and utilized their capital ships to focus down the CIS's larger ships. Both side tried to minimize their resource commitment/risk in the battle expecting a huge return. Neither got that and the CIS ended up loosing.

    • @wolfgod6443
      @wolfgod6443 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I think the CIS commander likely held back to stop from falling into the same trap he pulled on Anakin. If Republic reinforcements showed up while he was pushing his advantage, he would've looked really stupid. That being said, keeping his two munificents and lucrehulk back like you said would help minimize risk. I'm just thinking in terms of how light an assault force 3 Venators is (suspiciously light). The chances of a Republic trap is high.

      @Greg Elchert A few generals are very competent and good at what they do. But, the rest are not as good at being generals or thinking strategically. Gotta give Anakin credit for turning his cruiser to expose the stronger bottom to enemy fire. For a series that prefers 2D battles in an obviously 3D space, this was nice.

      @@wolfgod6443 Considering those Venators should have ~1500 V-19s and Y-wings on board, the CIS should have about 2000 Droid fighters at the start, and Republic star fighters (even the shity Torrent) are many times superior... this should be viewed as an easy curb stomp for the Republic until the CIS reinforcements arrived. The four new Munificents could have turned the tide, but by the time they showed up every thing but the (severely damaged) Lucrehulk should have been dead. And if the Venators could survive (or retreat) long enough then the arrival of Kenobi's Acclamators would guarantee a Republic victory.
      Edit: If we going by the established lore for these ships capabilities and assumed everybody involved had an fing clue about those capabilities.

    • @wolfgod6443
      @wolfgod6443 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hanzzel6086 I was under the impression Venerators had fairly weak fire power, relying more on their small fighters, but the problem there is there'd be no way those venerators would be fully stocked. Not only was Anakin strapped for resources, but I'm pretty sure there's simply not enough clones to support that many ships for every carrier. On the other side, a lucrehulk can carry thousands more fighters than just 2,000, and munificents specialize is higher fire power but weak armor, so I don't think they're hopeless with or without reinforcements.

    The battle of Ryloth made no sense in my opinion because you can't just invade an entire planet with only a dozen ships that have like a couple thousand troops.

      Once they had space superiority, The Republic jumped in Acclamator frigates to land on the planet. Presumably they landed some in all major conflict zones. The CIS forces invaded the planet and left the Lucrehulk and the Munificents there to protect it.

    • @TheBacknblack92

      The numbers make no goddamn sense in the prequel era. Just roll with it and dont think too hard about it.
      You'd need a battle of coruscant to just take unfriendly earth sized planet. Lets be generous and assume that each venator has a troop capacity equal to a star destroyer at 37,085. Wookiepedia says that "more than 1000 venators" took place in the battle of coruscant. Lets be super generous and double that to 2000.
      Thats 74,170,000 troops. In WWII over 70 million troops fought for all sides. An attacking force requires many more numbers than a defending force and can expect heavier losses.
      Actually youll still probably need to double that to have a chance at taking earth today. Our population in 1940 was 2.3 billion. It's 7.8 billion now. World would easily have a few hundred million fighters to call up to prevent a hostile invasion. Wed only be limited in weapons
      Also in ep2 they said there were 6 million clones for a galaxy wide war. They'd need at least 6 quadrillion clones to fight a war across a galaxy

Although I agree with you that the number should be a bit higher. But then the cis could lunch way more fighters then shown in the show and unlike the venators, they didn't have hanger bays so they could lunch everything at once because the fighters were just hung on to them

    Well here is my take. The separatists maintained their formation most likely out of gear of being drawn out of position and into an ambush. Anakin has in the past used ambushes rather well and this could have lead the commander to hold his forces back. But I must say if only one or two frigates with a decent fighter screen had pressed the attack that should have been enough. The fighters could have disabled the cruisers and the frigates could have mopped up what was left. The republic should have first used a more diverse fleet with a better blend of cruisers and picket ships then once in system, launched their fighter and bombed wings with a flight or two covering the fleet while the main fighters charged in and began to destroy capital ships. The picket ships could have helped with the fighter problem and with bombs in the black they could have helped regain the advantage and helped the republic repulse the ambush. Ambushes are not very easy to overcome but it's not impossible.

      UNSC is likely a nonfactor, they can't fight on even ground against any of the opposing factions, leading to it basically being Empire going 1v3 and the other two moderately difficulty would be more interesting.

  • @serafine666
    @serafine666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I would say that although pursuing the fleeing Republic ships and trying to keep up the pressure is a good choice in hindsight, the idea that this was a mistake assumes that hindsight known at the time. According to the Outbound Flight by Timothy Zahn (and assuming that Legends canon applies), droid starfighters have a limited range so maintaining the attack, especially against ships that are (presumably) fleeing as fast as they can would require following them with the controlling ships to keep the cruisers in their control envelope. There is every reason *not* to do this because if the cruisers pull their counterparts away from the planet, reinforcements (which the CIS cannot rule out the presence of) could drop out of hyperspace very close to Ryloth in a variant of the Thrawn Pincer, using the gravity field of a planetary body to trip the emergency disengage protocols of their hyperdrives and coming out quite close to any remaining ships, or even behind them. It is true that using a gravfield (in the case of the Pincer, an artificial one) as a means of a very precise hyperspace exit is pioneered by Thrawn but reaching the conclusion that it's possible, and presents real tactical advantages, is not an extremely difficult or complex batch of thinking. In essence, although in hindsight it was a mistake not to follow and finish off the Republic ships, it would not have been a correct decision with the knowledge available to the CIS at the time the decision could be made.
    Not simply destroying Anakin's ship the moment they could instead of allowing surrender was, however, an incredibly foolish mitake. There is no plausible scenario in which allowing Anakin to approach and accepting his surrender yields greater benefits for the CIS then simply destroying the ship. Even if Anakin is in earnest (which is wildly implausible in and of itself), he would be more useful dead because of the limited number of Jedi, and deleting even a single cruiser from the arsenal of the Republic is a gain. All other possibilities point in this same direction, because all the rest assume that Anakin is _not_ in earnest and thus has something to gain by approaching and offering surrender, so the CIS can only gain by preventing him.

    • @AlanHaskayne
      @AlanHaskayne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I assume the CIS abides by something similar to the Geneva Conventions, or at least rules of warfare, and as such they can not destroy a ship attempting to surrender. It is even possible that the robots of the CIS are programmed not to violate these rules of war, thus making it impossible for the commander to have the ship shot at.
      I mean, the CIS often attempts to allow, or allows surrender, it is clear they abide by some kind of rules of war. I don't really see another logical reason they would allow the ruse.

    • @serafine666
      @serafine666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At the same time, though, General Grievious is known as a butcher and is the highest military authority of the CIS, which doesn't fit if the CIS abides by recognizable code of _jus in bello_ (fancy term meaning "the laws of war" more or less). I think it far more likely that the Nemoidians in the Lucre Hulk let their greed for a prize prisoner take over. Every account and canon thing I've seen indicates that they're pretty piss-poor at anything even remotely military, and they're holding the droids' control box.
      My supposition is that there is some kind of standing order from the CIS leadership to capture any Jedi possible for propaganda uses, or perhaps torture/interrogation. Anakin Skywalker would be very prominent and thus very prized. Thus the error.

    • @AlanHaskayne
      @AlanHaskayne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is also possible that the corporate parts of the CIS put the rules of war as part of their droid's programming, and Grevious overrode this. As you said, they are pretty piss poor at the whole war thing, thus wanted to just put the rules of war in there out of ignorance.
      Other than when he butchered the Nightsisters we don't see much to indicate that Grevious is actually a butcher as well do we? Honest question, it has been a while since I saw the show. Is it possible that reputation is based on battlefield effectiveness not on violating the rules of warfare?

    • @serafine666
      @serafine666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point. I am still inclined to think that the mistake was made out of greed for a prominent prisoner rather than any compunction about killing a surrendering Skywalker.
      I don't know about what we see Grievous do because I haven't seen any of the media that covers the Clone Wars. I just know that he's described as a monster, and a butcher, and so I assume that he collects war crimes like baseball cards. On "butcher" being something that is said of him because he's effective, the only general I know of that was referred to the same way was General Ulyssus S. Grant during the American Civil War, and that was because his tactics killed _his own_ soldiers by the thousands. I can't imagine anyone referring to a general as a butcher for getting tens of thousands of _machines_ destroyed so I can only conclude that the appellation refers to wanton slaughters of innocents and POWs etc.

    • @AlanHaskayne
      @AlanHaskayne 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well he is fighting clones, so it could be that he is just butchering them. He was known as the butcher in the Republic after all, not in the CIS. He also, like many generals through history simply be an outlier rather than the rule on the CIS and war crimes. I am sure it is really in an out of character sense, just so the heroes don't die, but the fact that the CIS offers so many chances for surrender in the series is odd to me. It isn't just this episode, droids will often offer surrender than kill enemies who are unarmed or beaten. Even in Episode III you can see this through the droids demanding Ani and Obi Wan 'drop their weapons' rather than just blasting them in the back of the head.

    I sort of understand why the seperatists didn't pursue the damaged Venators: seperatist captain Mar Tuuk might have recognized that Anakin Skywalker often used unorthodox tactics, even when on the run. For his own safety, he just didn't give Anakin any chances, and kept up the blockade

    • @brucejedilee5290
      @brucejedilee5290 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Republic Supporter GM Luke is WAAAAY more powerful than Yoda. Also the NR had a large navy that was way more well balanced. Also numbers aren't everything and the Seperatists had equally many ships that were more powerful than the Venator. Also the Venator is not small it's very big.

    • @brucejedilee5290
      @brucejedilee5290 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1: Focusing on one ships is a very bad move. That is why the Sepparatist navy was far superior, they had variety.
      2: The NR had ships like that to and had they only used them they would have lost most space battles. The Venator is more of a carrier than anything else and 1 Nebula-class would destroy 2 Ventors rather easily.
      3: And the CIS navy followed a NR mentality which focused on balance and was much more powerful.
      4: They almost only had Venators, Acclamators, Arquitens and Consulars. The other ships were very rare and are actually more common within the NR navy.
      5: A-Wings are much more mobile than V-Wings and considered to be better armed as well. Also the NR had a lot of X-Wings, Y-Wings and many other fighters as well, including many Z-95s

    The true mistake of the battle was bringing in the piece of junk that is the V-19, if they had a bunch of Z-95 headhunters they could’ve won way sooner.
    Now as for the separatists, not breaking their blockade was actually really smart. If they had chased after Anakin, Obi-wan could’ve just jumped over and started the invasion with no issues.

      CharlieVGold 7 Specific and medium answers would be nice. Please don't include biased opinions or say the cliche 40k fan boy phrase like "they're literally gods" I'll consider your points but no one so far has persuaded me. But I start off like this. Ancient Halo (Forerunner, Ancient Humanity and Flood) have 100km ships that could single handedly blow up a planet as if it were a SW Death Star. They have shield worlds that are even more deadly than an entire fleet. Then their shielding and weapons are known to be 10x better than anything Master Chief even had.

    • @hivesys
      @hivesys 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diamondsandgold platinum Okay, (I'm go with Eldars, Necrons, C'tan and Old Ones)
      Eldars: (No Craftworlds), Ships with the size of a planet (almost) They can travel in time and have a powerful control of warp and weapons can destroy an entire stellar system, can read the mind and use the web.
      Necrons: A race with the power to kill the galaxy, yes, the galaxy, using Ark Cannons or using the celestial orrery. A single tomb of them can absorb 100,000 years worth of energy out of a star in a couple of seconds. They're inmune to Halos and inmune to flood.
      C'tan: An incredible and powerful race united to Necrons (Godlike), they're immortals, can destroy (with space magic) a galaxy (but that is some absurd, they need) and they eat stars, literally, they appeared at the same time as the universe and they can cover a star with their body and consume it.
      Old Ones: (i'm sorry but i need to say it) They're gods. They control multiple dimensions, they have the web, a simple step and you are where you want to be. Control de Materium and the immaterium, channel energies and are immortal, they created all life ln galaxy.
      So, I don't want to persuade you. We can have a pacific conversation without problems.
      We're fans of different games and that is respected :D
      (I don't include all the races because the ages are different between them)

    Subscribed to the Neutral Zone, I'll be sure to have the diplomatic paint on my hull when I arrive :D
    My personal favorite battle from the Clone Wars is the Sky Battle over Quell, as seen in the Season 1 episode "Jedi Crash", where Aayla Secura's fleet of cruisers is sent burning to their doom by Munificent frigates. When Anakin arrives in the Resolute to evacuate her, he's critically wounded, and he, Secura, Ahsoka, and some clones are forced to make a random hyperspace jump when their ship is damaged.
    It'd be interesting to hear your take on the background behind this battle, the mechanics going on, and if it was possible for Secura to fight her way free.

    The Republic fleet consisted of 3 Venator-class star destroyers, which is a very small task force. Even if the blocade wasn't deployed with the reinforcements, the Republic still wouldn't outnumber the defenders very much. Therefore, the Republic fleet could be seen by CIS as a bait. If CIS decided to pursue the retreating fleet, they could be caught by Republic reinforcements (if there were any) and would have to engage in full capital ship battle. From that point of view, it would make complete sense not to pursue the retreating fleet.

    The biggest oversight the Republic made was only sending three very valuable capital ships to break a blockade. There should have absolutely been smaller ships to support it, ones tasked to provide a more comprehensive defensive screen against any CIS ships, both fighters and any larger vessels that move to engage the Republic ships.
    Or, if sending more ships wouldn't've been possible (even just a single corvette): having a squad of Y-wings escorted by the V-19s, that way the bomber pilots and fighter pilots can each do what they're best at.
