  • Day 3 of my cycling adventure I bike from a campground in Northeast Connecticut to a Candlewood Suites hotel near the Bradley International Airport near Hartford. Fourty-five beautiful miles or rail trail path's including the East Coast Greenway, Hop River Trail and ten miles of road cycling.
One more day and I will have completed the entire East Coast of the USA.
I travel through Willimantic, CT where I encounter two 11 foot bronze Frog statues mounted on a bridge. The mystery of the frogs is written below:
    FROG MYSTERY
Why is the Willimantic River decorated with frog sculptures. The story lies in the famous Windham Frog Fight (or Fright), which occurred in June of 1754.
In 1754, Connecticut residents lived in fear of frontier turmoil and the French and Indians War of the devil lurking in the wilderness.
According to local historians, it was well after the residents of Windham had gone to bed on that June night that they heard a dreadful sound throughout the surrounding hills. Some believed it was the screams of warring tribal people or, perhaps, the bellowing trumpets of Judgment Day. Successive parties of brave men ventured outdoors to investigate the origin of the roiling noises. As the night’s darkness gave way to morning light, it became clear that the sound was coming from the bottom of a hill east of town.
    An Unusual Natural Phenomenon
A long-standing drought had reduced the entire area’s standing water to a single small pond and every frog for miles around had descended on the Windham area in a desperate search for water. The jostling and battling of these frogs, and their struggle to gain access to the area’s only remaining water, had been the source of the previous night’s unearthly sound. After the night’s melee, hundreds of bullfrog corpses littered the landscape, hence the noise was brought about by a Frog Fight. The event has continued to be commemorated by tales, songs, and decorative traditions, including that of the 11-foot giant green frogs at both ends of the Willimantic Bridge.

Thanks for an uplifting, wonderful video. I am always amazed at how nice people are during my tours on the West Coast, it's nice to see the same thing in the East.

Hi David, I agree, in our crazy world where the media pushes division, the real story is that the majority of people are nice and caring. Bicycle touring brings back faith in humanity. Thanks again and stay safe, Steve

This was a great trail today, with so little on roads shared with cars. I always wince a little for you when you show shots of your riding on narrow shoulders - or no shoulder! Eek. Today's ride was much more relaxing, I bet.

Very interesting about the frogs story!
"Oh oh, smells like someones smoking marijuana in their room" 😂😂😂
Just can't go anywhere anymore without smelling that 💩!!!😃😂🤣
Oh well...I'd rather put up with someone doing that and enjoying themselves than to be doing Fentanyl and getting themselves killed.
Great video Steve. Take care my friend!

That was a great day and the lady at the hotel was hilarious. I loved the trail and trees. What width tire are you running Steve?

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Tony, it was great to have so many miles of nice off road trail. I run 40mm tires at 35 to 40 psi. Can't fit anything larger on the bike. Even with those tires it's a good ride unless the trail has deep sand or lots of rocks. Every time I run into rough terrain I think about the pluses of having a fat bike. Hope you're having a great weekend, Steve
