  • Day two finishing my ride from Key West to Canada has me biking from Auburn Massachusetts to a campground along the Airline Trail in Northeast Connecticut. A beautiful day with gravel trails along the way. Met a "trail angel" named Dave and encountered some challenging terrain. Two more days of cycling and I will have completed the East Coast of the USA.

      Hi Amy, thank you for the nice comment. You are so right, the Airline trail is sooo nice. I've ridden the section from Willimantic to East Hampton many times. Probably passed by you on the trail. Next video I continue on the trail and get off on the Hop Meadow trail to go north. Was a great ride. Take care Amy and stay safe, Steve

    Another great video by Steve!! Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us. I just finished the Erie Canal from Syracuse to Albany. Wonderful trail, wonderful people. I enjoyed most of it but not the single track. We were very lucky to have wonderful weather, but the few days before it had rained and there was a few slick spots on the single track but no standing water. It’s because of you I did the Erie Canal so keep inspiring us!! 😊

      Hi again and thank you for the nice comment. Glad you enjoyed the Erie Canal trail. The single track portion can be a little sketchy at times. Beautiful trail though. We certainly enjoyed it. Thanks again and all the best, Steve

    Another outstanding day. Some of that trail looked rough. The Lamoille Valley Rail trail here should be done in mid November. Some of it is ridable now. The great thing about that is it's a tenth of a mile from my house. Can't wait to hit that one. Take care and stay safe, Al

      Hi Al, hope you're doing okay. The trail was rough it spots. You are lucky the Lamoille trail is close to your home. Jan and I plan on riding it some day. Hopefully this year. We plan on going to Montreal next year to do the trail that extends 120 miles northwest of the city. Can't remember the name but it looked good online. Take care and stay safe, Steve

    Great video, Steve - looks like a fun adventure although wrangling a loaded bike up and down over rocks and trees is tough! Lots of people prefer road riding, but I love me a good trail though the woods.

    Your tent is a favorite for thru hikers on the AT. Expensive and light weight but no rain fly so in a heavy rain, you are going to get condensation on the inside. I opted for the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2. It's almost free standing but most importantly, it has a rain fly.

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, I've been using the Triplex for three years and endured some heavy rain. Since the tent has a large footprint and excellent airflow, I haven't seen any condensation (yet). Even with the doors closed, there's enough airflow from the foot and head protected mesh screen area just above the bathtub floor to keep things dry and air moving inside. The Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 looks like an awesome tent too. The technology just keeps getting better. Thanks for the comment and take care, Steve

    Hey Steve… a Connecticut guy as well (Essex). I have not ridden the Airline much past just south of Pomfret and it does look a bit rough out there. I am doing a foliage tour on the Airline with the goal of taking it as far east as it goes in CT but need to find a campground. How was the State Park campground that you stayed in - Mashamoquet. My plan is to ride out, camp, then ride back.

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave, Essex is my second home during the summer. We keep our sailboat moored off the end of Main Street in Essex. Thank you for checking out my channel! The Airline trail from East Hampton to the Mashamoquet campground area is awesome. I don't recommend going beyond there unless you are running over 42 mm tires. Very bumpy. The campground is nice and basic, well maintained with no services or water, just an outhouse. Even though it's pretty empty this time of year, you still need to make a reservation. They patrol in the morning and afternoon to make sure there are no squatters. I look forward to checking out your channel and subscribing. Take care and have a sparkling day, Steve

    • @cc103acs
      @cc103acs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steveretiredandcycling - Well imagine that… a sailboat in Essex. Next summer bring your bike and we can do some local riding. A ride up to the Cockaponset State Forest is beautiful… and we can take videos of each other riding and then sitting at the new Brewery in Centerbrook. I have only been seriously videoing my rides since this spring. I finally got a GoPro. The last two videos I posted had some super scenery - Vermont and then Quebec City. I need to get back to Canada next year - the Quebec rail trails are extensive.
      As for the Airline Trail, I was doing a fully packed training ride with a new configuration and got hit with a rainstorm and had a flat tire at the same time. So I rolled off into the woods, set up camp, and stealth camped. This happened about 5 or so miles past the James Goodwin Nature Center so that is as far as I got riding east. I have 41mm tubeless tires so they can handle the rough trail… just not sure my old bones can.

    Charlie horse hurts and yes the soreness afterwards is real. Steve, when your riding is broken glass a problem? I’m very curious how you deal with it. Thanks

    • @steveretiredandcycling
      @steveretiredandcycling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Terry, broken glass is always a problem, however when touring I use robust tubeless tires. If I get a puncture from glass, the tubeless fluid has always sealed the hole and all I do is add a little more air to the tire once sealed. I do carry two extra tubes in case of large holes, however I never had to use them (so far). I'm always on the lookout for glass to try avoiding a problem. Thanks again and all the best, Steve
