Whenever we had a lake effect storm, my dad would announce that we had to go to the corner store for supplies. My brother and I ran to get geared up and off we would go...walking in the deep snow with our sled in tow. Corner store was only about three blocks away..wasn't far. We would put our treasured supply on the sled and hike back to the house to show Mom. Our treasure? A single gallon of ice cream. I loved those storms. Great memories.

Truck mechanic here! I've seen a lot of these Webasto heathers fail because of the glow plug getting too much smut on it and then they can't ignite the fuel anymore. Try to change the plug and give it a deep clean. In many cases this will fix the problem. But before doing this, check that the heather receives fuel and air, check the fuel pump that it's ticking when activated, the fuel line isn't clogged and the airways are free. Thanks for taking us with you on your adventures Tim and stay save!

What I was wondering about diesel heaters: What happens when the exhaust is snowed in? Are we risking getting co2 poisoning or will they turn off?

    • @-Master_Of_Disaster
      @-Master_Of_Disaster 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@bestishiphop Normally there should be no risk of co/co2 poisoning as long as the heater and the exhaust pipe is installed and routed correctly and has no cracks in it. The flame will starve after a short while when the exhaust is blocked because there is not enough oxygen to burn in the heater. Also if the exhaust is blocked with snow, it will either not start at all, melt the snow after a short while or smoke like a steam train. It should be quickly obvious if something isn't right.
If your heater is installed in the inside of your sleeping area it surely doesn't hurt to get a co detector just to be safe.

I remember a blizzard here in northern Michigan in 78. I had a baby and my husband couldn't make it home. We lived in the woods. I walked out my door to fix a problem, turned around, and couldn't see my house. Went back inside and tied myself with a rope to my house before venturing out again. The next week the blizzard of 78 hit and luckily my husband was home. We were snowed in for five days and my baby took her first steps during that time. What wonderful memories.

Your story brought me back to a memory of that blizzard. I was a young pre-teen returning with my father from one of my many hockey games when that blizzard hit. We lived 50 miles south of Detroit in a house on a old farming road in South Rockwood. There were a few farm houses but open fields on the road we built one of the first modern brick houses on back then. We were about a mile from home coming back from my game and ended up stuck in one of the many snow drifts we were trying to plow through to get home. We both had to walk about a mile that night in that blizzard after unsuccessfully trying to dig out. Me still wearing my hockey equipment and my father with an Inadequate coat. We both barely made it home on the verge of frostbite. My father is long passed now, but strangely enough, that is one of my strongest fond memories of my youth, that blizzard and that walk home in it. Maybe because we endured it or in some strange way it was exciting for a young boy! Good thing it was the fad of the 70’s and I had long hair back then that covered my ears.

Tim ,I drove a truck for 45 years in winter weather and I always carried a couple gallons of house hold bleach like cloxox. If you pour the bleach on your tires it will improve your traction. The bleach makes your tires really sticky and I've been able to drive on some pretty slick snow in roads when other trucks couldn't even get moving. Just an idea from an old retired trucker.
Stay safe,God bless and watch over you on your travels.

Definitely not for the faint of heart. Phew!!! I always wondered why my Dad would pack his tool chest, crow bar, a short saw, wooden matches and a shovel in the truck even for day trips in California. I asked him why one day and. he said, "you never know." That shovel and crowbar came in handy when he got a tire stuck in the mud. The winch he installed the first year he got his truck has helped out other people more on day trips (including us) than we can count. In Alaska, being prepared is a way of life. Thank you, Timmy for taking us along on your adventures. ❤❤

Tim, if your oven has "broil" capability or setting, you can broil your steak(s) in the oven. It's the easy way to cook meat indoors, that tastes pretty close to grilled steak, only "grilled"/broiled indoors, in a pinch, or if not possible or able to grill outdoors. Place foil under the oven rack to catch drippings, placing the meat/steak directly on the oven rack to act as a grill (spray with Pam or, lightly oil the rack so meat doesn't stick to it. Cook like you would on a grill.
OR, if you can find one in a thrift store, buy a broiling pan.
Most stoves come with a broiling pan. It's like a large baking pan but only about an inch deep, with a slotted top that fits into the top of the pan. Place a 1/4 cup of water in the pan, to prevent meat from drying out in the oven, oil the slotted top and "grill" your meat on the slotted top. Cooking on the "BROIL" setting/temperature.

The blizzard of 78’ hit Rhode Island also and we were buried in snow. It took me four days to shovel our driveway for when my dad could come home from work. It came so fast too. My mom and I were at Ames department store (long gone now but some of you might remember it) When we got to the checkout it was snowing so hard we could hardly see the parking lot. We left our things there and went to pick my sister up from school and hunker down at home. My dad was chief engineer at Rhode Island Hospital and they were having problems with the heat so he had to stay. By the time it was fixed he couldn’t leave cuz the 195 east and west bridge was so deep and cars were buried. He slept in his office four or five days and we were stuck at home with no electricity. I was 16 and my sister was 5. We had a kerosene heater and had to camp out in the livingroom. We didn’t have a hand can opener so had to eat whatever didn’t come from a can. I’ll never forget that storm and shoveling for four days. We lived in a residential area so were the last neighborhoods to be plowed. It was tough but fun also for my friends and I. We tramped down a path down the middle of the street to each others houses. Tim I think it’s funny Alaska is still getting blizards and in R.I. the trees are budding and some flowers are blooming. Btw ribeye steak is my fave and crispy cream glazed doughnuts are awesome.

I just found the video of the trip that ended at Atigun pass this week. I lost hours watching these. I was in the Army for 6 whole months when we were sent to Fairbanks in Feb of 79 for an annual exercise, Jack Frost. I remember being told it was -35 to -50 (wind chill from a Huey is what?) using gear from the 1950's it was a harsh 9 day outing. We had guys who had never seen snow before. Later in life gear got so good I started week long snowshoe trips every winter. It is an awesome feeling to be comfortable in the coldest weather
