The real reason is that Chapter 130 and 131 were supposed to show, that while Eren cares about his friends, he is still willing to sacrifice them to achieve his freedom, and how his wish of having them live long lives and being free can't be achieved both.
Notice how a bird is flying towards the light, with the panel of his friends being in the dark? Yeah, that's obvious foreshadowing. Not to mention the "they will live long after I'm gone", with there being a panel of Historia. And right after she asks him about what he thinks about her having a child, you have the panels where the cuts his own leg off and stabs his eye out. And when Zeke talked about love, Eren thought about Historia.
I'm sorry for getting carried away, but it's so fucking clear, at least to me, that Eren was retconned hardcore.

Eren won't put his friends above the greater interest of Eldia, he knows exactly that freedom doesn't come cheap and sacrifices need to be made, he sacrificed Armin without a second though in his battle against Bertholdt, and when Historia asked him about his intentions to kill Reiner and Bertholdt, Eren answered that he had to kill them for standing in his way, in 123 we see Eren abandoning his friends after their useless talk no justo plan failed horribly, later he called Armin a complete useless having no real solutions to save Paradise, deep in his mind he knows that his friends are completely incompetent, not to mention that the story was preparing to ship Historia and Eren together so Eren won't value his friends more than his lover and child, Eren knows that his nation, lover and child are more important than his incompetent friends so he later imprisoned and hurt them, it makes perfect sense that he kills them for standing in his way just like what he did with Bertholdt, only a clown would endanger his entire nation so his useless few friends could live a happy long live as some fans say to justify the trash additional extra pages.

It doesn’t matter how much logic you use or evidence.. it doesn’t matter if you have 10000000000000 true objective evidence as long as they can come up with one tiny thing that doesn’t make any sense that get destroyed like the rest, they will still be stuck unable to progress. It will result in them having cognitive dissonance and using mental gymnastic and symbolisms or just invent things without any supporting factors. It’s something to be studied. Idk if they are disconnected to reality or reject any sort of reality. Honestly it’s fascinating not in a good way. It prevent progress or learning to a certain degree. Idk if it’s by age or mental. At some point I am curious of how do they do that to themselves. When logic try to creep in do their feelings over power it. Do they reject it in their brains ? I balance both but I value logic more. Well I guess u didn't notice. Eren never said anything doing rumbling...if you're talking about chapter 130, that line...was a juxtaposition of his line he actually said in chapter 2. Theres that panel right next to it. That dialogue starts with the chapter 2 or 3 panel...because that's where it was originally said and then that dialogue bleeds on to the chapter 130 present page....meaning to show that's where his choice has led him to do. He wanted to kill all those 'animals'....that choice one after the other...led him to kill all the innocents and not animals. It isn't supposed to be badass. It's tragic, sad just like eren in those moments. He was heartbroken during the entire rumbling... was regretting it as he did. Eren has no dialogue in the entire rumbling arc except the time he told his friends that they'll have to kill him.

It's a big misconception in the fandom that eren only cares about his friends, that's not true, eren risked his life as a child and killed three adults to save mikasa who was a stranger to him back then, she was not his friend and he didn't know her and yet he did all that for her. Eren always cared mainly about seeking freedom and taking the lives of thoses who oppose his people's freedom not just his friends freedom. So him only doing his for his friends it's just a bad justification that some fans use to justify this bad ending.
Another misconception that some fans use to justify eren stoping the rumbling at 80%, is that conflict and peace can never be achieved as long as there are humans. This argument doesn't make sense because eren never cared about creating everlasting peace or a world whitout conflict and hatred that was never his purpose, Eren cared about the freedom of paradis from outside world's discrimination, and if he had wiped out everyone outside paradis then paradis would no longer be the center of hatred in the world and will be free from the world's oppression this is a simple fact nothing to debate here. And this is exactly why wiping out 80% instead of everyone doesn't make any sense period.
One last thing I want to add hat didn't make sense at all is how the titan powers curse was lifted, that whole mikasa was the chosen one and that yimir was waiting for her to show her that she too can let go of love is just last minute garbage retconing, we know that yimir was waiting for eren to free her and he was the first one that did that in chapter 122 but i guess all that doesn't make sense anymore. People cope by saying at least they enjoyed the journey, so what if the ending is bad, but that's the thing. The whole story was 9.5 or even 10/10, before the ending came that is. Now the whole story seems pointless. The entire journey was meaningless. NOTHING was achieved. So many people died and gave their hearts for nothing. Characters were assassinated, u can't even re-watch certain scenes seriously anymore, u can't take some characters seriously anymore. AoT lost it's rewatchable value and it's just sad.

@@rickchakraborty2087 Agreed! Ending can make or break any story, it's one of the major deciding factors in allowing us to separate the good stories from the badly written ones. Aot was supposed to set a precedent for the anime medium and genre, it was expected to surpass generic shounen ending and claim its place as a masterpiece. The fact that the ending retconned all of its themes, characters, events etc. makes us feel betrayed. There's nothing satisfying about this ending and it feels like I learnt nothing from this story. I feel that there was no point to it all since isayama left us with a message of how 'cycle of hatred continues' which is so contradictory to the original message of breaking the cycle of hatred he was preaching in the story for years.

My problem with chaper 139 itself is how Eren's character arc ended and his "goal" that he accomplished at the end, we got Eren's inner thoughts way before chapter 139 and it showed us his determination to be free at all costs. It was obvious that Eren still cared for his friends but to suddenly love Mikasa out of NOWHERE when he's about to die makes no sense whatsoever, Eren has been near death COUNTLESS times and not ONCE has he thought about how we wanted to be there for mikasa in the middle of it all. Because of the sudden 180 in Eren's character during 139 many moments throughout the manga makes no sense or has little to no value anymore, things like "i was born into this world", "that scenery" , the ymir scene in the paths and so on. there was no way paradi could survive even with 80 percent of the world wiped out and the other 20 percent would be furious with paradi because of what Eren did. chapter 139 also showed paradi about to go to war even when they're still seriously underdeveloped. Eren ultimately accomplished nothing at the end because he suddenly decided to go back on his INNER THOUGHTS AND BELEIFS. It pissed me off when random niggas would say "you didn't understand the story" when I've been reading attack on titan since season 1 first aired.

Him wanting his friends to live long live is a wish not a goal. That’s why understanding words and context and situations is important when reading a story. It was to introduce conflict of reality vs wish. That’s why he hoped not wanting to make sure of it because he doesn’t know. It’s like saying “I hope I get the job” or “I wish this happened instead of that”. It is just unknown chance. Like you said internal conflict with reality. He knew his friends would have to die for him to achieve his goal. Also like he said in chap139 which contradict 80% being a plan and trying to turn a wish into a goal theory is wrong. He said he would of destroyed everything anyways. So he was stop due to retcon and change in the story by isayama. It’s more of a well....wish/desire/want. But there is no garbage it will happen.
Definitions and differences between wish/want/desire and goals. Hope this helps people. Also the video is correct. :
    Wishes are not goals.
They can be pleasant diversions and may give temporary relief from the demands of the real world. But wishes are not calls to action, since the person doing the wishing, knows she is dreaming and that the dream is not to be taken seriously.
    Difference Between Goals and Wishes
What is a wish? The dictionary defines a wish as: to want; desire; to long for. Goals on the other hand are defined as: the result or achievement toward which effort is directed. The difference is profound not only in semantics, but also in how each can shape your thought process, your actions (or lack of), and ultimately, your life.
    wish verb

    \ ˈwish \
    wished; wishing; wishes
Definition of wish (Entry 1 of 2)
    transitive verb
1 : to have a desire for (something, such as something unattainable)
wished he could live his life over
2 : to give expression to as a wish : BID
    wish them good night
3a : to give form to (a wish)
    b : to express a wish for
c : to request in the form of a wish : ORDER
d : to desire (a person or thing) to be as specified
While goals create a vision with a wide range, objectives focus on the individual, achievable outcomes. Objectives are the concrete deliverables that make the goal come to life. Progress towards them helps measure advancement to reaching the larger end goal.
    Definition of goal
1 : the end toward which effort is directed : AIM
The goal is high-speed rail travel.
Other words for goals are :
Some common synonyms of goal are aim, design, end, intention, intent, objective, object, and purpose.
Basically it was eren’s hppe and wish that they live long lives not his goal. Wish is wanting something that might not happen or favorable outcome but not sure. Definitions said it but that’s my take from it in my own words.

Simply put, Eren wished for his friends to live long lives because they're also part of the nation of Paradis. Protecting Paradis meant protecting Armin and Mikasa as well as complete strangers living in Wall Sina.
However, there are two factors that made this secondary objective impossible to be attained:
    1. Outside circumstances. It was beyond Eren's control that Gabi was able to sneak into the airship and shoot Sasha, especially considering that the Survey Corps started celebrating too early and let their guard down. Connie blaming Eren for Sasha's death showed an utter lack of responsibility on his part and a lack of understanding of the big picture.
    2. The free will and decisions of his friends. Yes Eren *wishes* for all of his friends to live, but the moment that they teamed up with the Warriors to stop him meant that his wish is now opposed to his greater objective of securing Paradis' freedom. By making the choice to try to kill Eren, the others knew damn well that they're likely to die by the Rumbling.
These two reasons therefore don't make Eren hypocritical or inconsistent with his grand goal of saving Paradis and getting freedom, as he had respected the free choice of his friends.

my english is poor but i hope you understand what im trying to say
I think eren characters is especially on 139
it same like lord acton say "power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupt absolutely"
from the start it was his nature to killing people or i can say the one who treathening his "freedom", maybe the first time this desire come was when he killed mikasa kidnapper (but that's self defense bro) i don't think that a normal children can kill an adult without feeling regret of taking someone life but you can ignore this one because maybe it just a self defense he maybe feeling regret after that,
after that You can see this desire when he against annie for the last time he's drowning in ecstasy when he rip and tear annie titans while saying "im gonna kill every last one of them, im gonna destroy this world" and in the 131 when he say freedom while he's brutally massacred people in the rumbling, eren get more and more get corrupted because a power of titan shifter he have , experience from previous inheritor and the memory , and of course his desire to kill is growing up he's not satisfied with the titan he wants more
Before time skip you can notice eren always justifed he's action killing titan because he was born into this world or because titan taken his freedom but in reality he just want to killing
after time skip he's see a future and the past ,experience from previous inheritor and got an absolute power
he's doesn't need to justified everything because he's already have a power that absolute no one can bother him anymore
    He's already corrupted absolutely,
but the thing that kinda weird or inconsistency is he actually have sympathy and guilty feeling to others like people like halil besides his friend (well you can say this was to make humanize his character but idk it just felt weird when he actually wanted it instead like in previous chapter where he's forced by his fate to do it)
but in the end idk what actually eren motivation at all even eren himself he doesn't know why but he wanted it, is it for his friend, is it for paradise or it was for his desire to massacred people but one thing i got in the last chp is eren and fritz is not so difference ,
    one want a domination
one want a just wanting to kill

Honestly the "Friendship Theory" makes the most sense to me, I feel like I'm in a small category tho.. realistically speaking could Eren really protect all his friends and seek freedom? Unless you feel he should have genocide the world.... and yes, he wanted to kill all of titans humanity etc, but he did realize that all of humanity are not bad. And Eren definitely matured since he was younger and probably decided that instead of destroying the whole world ill weakened them; to help Paradis catch up to the rest of the world and allow peace in his friends time. I mean honestly, You say wage war for 5 friends? If the whole world is after you and your family. Where is it safe to hide, but Paradis... of course he gonna wage war, they face prejudice around the world... no where to truly run or live in peace. I believe chapter 138? Its showed and alternative life where he decided not to wage war and live in peace, but was always on the run....and many more of his friends die and Paradis was conquered in 2 months. Him going to War for Paradis makes more since, if you're trying to protect 5 friends...

  • @e443productions9

Eren saying that he wants to protect the people of Paradis is literally not even his primary goal. Just because he says it, it doesn't mean it's true. Eren is not being fully earnest in the scene when he addresses the subjects of Ymir. If he's not doing it for his friends, then where the hell did he suddenly become interested in protecting the island over his friends? It literally doesn't make sense if his motivations just came out of nowhere. He has always sought freedom, but it was always for himself, and throughout the story he develops into someone who cares more for the people around him. That was his whole character arc! The friendship theory didn't come out of no where, it was there from the very start. Eren's motivation to kill titans was because he felt powerless to protect his mother, and as the story unfolds, he goes from acting rashly to kill for revenge to wanting what is best for his friends. Did you not see all of the storylines in seasons 2 to 3? In the ending he says that he was trapped by his own desire to destroy the world, but this whole time he had been trying to fight himself too so that his friends would prevail in the end.
I don't like the ending personally, but saying that friendship was not one of his primary motivators is just purposefully pretending that Eren was acting completely earnestly during the Marley arc onwards.
If Eren is valuing his freedom over his own friends lives then he literally hasn't gone through any change whatsoever during the story. There's just no way he start out as being rage filled and seeking a "freedom" that doesn't exist, and just completely regresses all the character development he went through.

Maybe originally he saw a future when he could've achieved both saving them at least along with Paradis? Not to mention that at some point things started to revolve around the topic of the end of the world, the real Ragnarok, that unfortunately in the end was dropped along with many other themes, so things could've started going in more unexpected and outlandish directions. There were so many ways Isayama could've given a more fitting ending to the story... So many.

I believe that it would have been a case of dark irony. Think about it, Eren wanted to kill all the titans at first, but it turned out that all the titans were innocent people. The titan he hated more than anything in the world was his fathers ex wife who didn’t do anything wrong. This is dark irony, and that theme has been present since the start of the story, and would have been capitalized on by forcing Eren to make Krugers words ironic, and his own as well.

Eren wanted to complete the rumbling and make an outside world he could explore but he saw that he wouldn’t finish it so he orchestrated his plan to have his friends kill him. Other plans may have been better but this is the path eren decided to set himself on ever since he was the future memories
Him killing his friends makes no sense when he has no reason to. Even if you went with the logic of him giving his friends freedom to oppose him, just tell floch and Yeagerists to destroy the plane. An unnecessary battle with a fairly obvious conclusion where his friends die a battle they had no chance at winning is avoided. That’s why the idea of him killing his friends seems so pointless to me. It can obviously be avoided and if he allowed them to fight it’s basically a useless death sentence.

Bro eren cares about paradise because his friends and people he loved live there, he wants to save paradise because of the people that are on it and because he was born there. His idea of protecting his friends never changed, Sasha didn’t die because he wanted her to die now did he? And second of all why would they have changed? What did he go through in between the train scene and the end of the story that would’ve made him not care for his friends? Eren went with the rumbling plan because he wanted to achieve his own personal freedom, not to mention armin’s plan was unrealistic and zeke’s plan was disgusting to him plus he already know what he was going to do and knew he couldn’t change it. The rumbling itself doesn’t go against him wanting his friends to live long lives, so why do you think he just stopped caring about his friends? The fear of the rumbling would just basically be the same thing as armin’s plan plus if the titan curse is lifted paradise would be destroyed whenever anyone has the balls to go to paradise and notice they aren’t any colossal anywhere, plus eren didn’t even know how lifting the titan curse even worked, he just knew that mikasa would be the one to set Ymir free. Also eren in the paths would’ve probably noticed that paradise will die eventually no matter what he does, either by themselves or the outside world, so what mattered was protecting the people he loves right now, since paradise won’t just suddenly become a utopia after he kills the entire world. You’re also misinterpreting what that eren line means imo, to me, it means that it wouldn’t have mattered if his friends stopped him or not, or if there was any reason to destroy the world, he still would’ve done it, after all he is the type of person to stab a human traffickers as a child. Don’t get me wrong the ending is shit I just think a lot of what you’re saying in this video is false.

Q: Sasha didn't die because he wanted her to die jowls did he?
Of course he never wanted Sasha to die but in order to ultimately achieve his goals of liberating the island from the threat of genocide. he had to make some surprise attack cause if you dont remember Marley was gathering the world forces to plan an attack on Paradis. Unfortunately his friends happen to be soldiers. No soldier wants his comrades to die but to reach a goal bodies need to drop.
Q: Why would his goal of protecting his friends change?
None of the people who disliked the ending wanted his character to change but it ultimately did in the last chapter. That's the change we were talking about. He chose to pause the rumbling right at the end just because his friends got close which lead to their home being destroyed later. When Eren wants something done he does it but that last minute switch at the end came outta no where you can't deny that.
Q: what experience from train to end of story would've made him not care about them?
Once again it's not that Eren doesn't care about his friends. The mission of securing the Island's future is just more important of a mission that was dropped at the end to prop his friends up to talk no jutsu the survivors of the genocide.
Q: the rumbling didn't go against caring for his friend why do you think so?
It doesn't up until his friends are actively there trying to stop him. At that point they made their decision and they are fine dying for that mission to save the world. Plus I think that would've hit harder. Eren destroying the world for his friends that he ultimately had to kill while fulfilling his mission.
Fear of the Rumbling would still be there and it'd be a while before anyone comes over but like Saint said their economies would be in shambles and they definitely wouldn't be able to build a military as strong for at least 20 years. Still a bad plan but it's doable I GUESS.
Maybe Eren did see the destruction of Paradis but he never stated as such.
As for that line of "even if I wasn't aware of how this would all end with you guys stopping me. I still would have reduced everything in this world to dust" I think a lot of us have a different interpretation of that line. For me it was Eren saying that he would've always destroyed the world because the world would have always tried to destroy him. He's not the type to just sit back and let things happen. If he can change it he will.
I hoped I helped to answer some things. At least to the best of my abilities. If not just call me Isayama cause I dont know how to write lol
